Ghostbusters VR Confirmed for PlayStation VR2 & VR Arcades

A couple of months back nDreams and Sony Pictures Virtual Reality (SPVR) dropped a surprise announcement that work had begun on Ghostbusters VR for Meta Quest 2. Today, SPVR has revealed that the franchise is expanding even further into VR, with Ghostbusters VR also coming to PlayStation VR2 whilst a new title, Ghostbusters VR Academy is being made specifically for Hologate location-based entertainment (LBE) venues.

Ghostbusters VR Academy

Ghostbuster VR (working title) is going to be a 4-player cooperative experience set in San Francisco rather than New York. It’ll be up to you and your mates to grab those proton packs and rid the city of manacing ghosts. Only a short teaser trailer has been shown so far. Considering nDreams is developing the title, its no surprise that Ghostbusters VR is coming to PlayStation VR2 as the studio has previously released the likes of Fracked for PlayStation VR.

As for Ghostbusters VR Academy, this will utilise Hologate’s unique LBE setup to offer fans a unique experience where players take on the role of ghostbusters in training. There will be two versions, one for Hologate Arena and one for Hologate Blitz. In Arena players work as a team to complete high-risk ghost encounter scenarios whilst Blitz puts them in a flying prototype ECTO vehicle.

Ghostbusters VR Academy, the new location-based VR training experience, will continue to expand the world of Ghostbusters in a way that honours the legacy of the franchise and offers something entirely new,” says Jake Zim, Senior Vice President, Virtual Reality, Sony Pictures Entertainment. “For the first time ever, players will be able to train to be a real Ghostbuster in an amazing academy setting and race a new flying version of the ECTO using HOLOGATE’s vehicle motion simulator.”

Ghostbusters VR Academy

“Sony Pictures VR is doing incredible things for virtual reality, and we’re thrilled to collaborate for this new experience,” adds Leif Petersen, CEO and HOLOGATE founder. “Ghostbusters VR Academy is a natural fit for HOLOGATE’s ARENA and BLITZ platforms. It transcends reality so players can create memorable moments while fulfilling longtime wishes to operate iconic Ghostbusters equipment. We can’t wait for players to step inside this world.”

Ghostbusters VR Academy will be coming to 400 Hologate locations by the end of 2022. The PlayStation VR2 version of Ghostbusters VR will, of course, depend on when the headset launches, currently unknown at this point. It’ll join a growing selection of titles Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) revealed during its recent State of Play event.

All the PlayStation VR2 Announcements From Sony’s State of Play

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) State of Play presentations have become the company’s de facto way of making its PlayStation announcements, rather than event linked press events. The most recent showcase was jam-packed with exciting details, most notably a selection of virtual reality (VR) titles for PlayStation VR2.

No Man's Sky - PSVR2

If you did somehow miss all of the buzz surrounding what VR titles have been added to PlayStation VR2’s roster then take a look below.

Resident Evil 4 VR

The Resident Evil series has gone from strength to strength in VR in recent years, with Resident Evil 4 revived last year for Meta Quest 2. The State of Play event revealed that a PlayStation 5 edition is due for release on 23rd March 2023, showcasing the title in all its next-gen glory. Then, right at the end, was a PSVR2 tease, simply saying that “PlayStation VR2 content also in development”.

No indication of whether that’s full support or for bonus “VR” content as some PlayStation titles have done in the past. However, the PS5 version won’t be a 100% port of the original as Capcom will be: “reimagining the storyline of the game” whilst “modernizing the graphics and updating the controls.” So it won’t purely be a pretty makeover.

Resident Evil Village

There was more Resi good news, this time with Capcom confirming the very latest instalment, Resident Evil Village will be getting official VR treatment. Resident Evil Village will fully support PlayStation VR2, taking advantage of the headset’s eye tracking, motion controls and other features.

That means dual-wielding weapons, so you can switch up strategies by mixing between weapons. This was teased in the reveal trailer but no date was mentioned.

Horizon Call of the Mountain

Firesprite and Guerrilla Games teased Horizon Call of the Mountain earlier this year with a very brief trailer. Now, the teams have given gamers a much deeper look at the upcoming VR experience, the creatures they’ll encounter and the locations that await.

With SIE previously stating it wanted to move away simple “VR experiences” and from the gameplay trailer shown Horizon Call of the Mountain looks set to do just that. The PlayStation Blog confirms there will be a main story as well as an “immersive River Ride experience” that can be enjoyed by others watching on a connected TV.

No Man’s Sky VR

And for those eager to spend countless hours with their PlayStation VR2 on, Hello Games is working on bringing its popular space exploration title No Man’s Sky to the device. As it’s already available for PlayStation VR, the PSVR2 edition will: “take that sense of immersion and believability up by several major notches,” notes Hello Games’ founder Sean Murray.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution

Having dropped the first teaser gameplay trailer for The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution back in March, Skydance Interactive and Skybound Entertainment released new footage of the zombie survival adventure whilst confirming both PlayStation VR and PlayStation VR2 support.

Continuing the story of The Tourist surviving the walker-infested streets of New Orleans, the PSVR2 version will offer enhanced visuals and haptic feedback support. This sequel is coming to supported headsets in 2022, with the PlayStation VR2 arriving in 2023 – seemingly confirming the headset’s launch next year.

SIE still hasn’t specified a release window or price for the upcoming headset but it’s looking more and more likely that 2023 will be the year. What has been detailed is the fact that 20+ videogames are currently earmarked for the VR devices’ arrival. As further details are made available gmw3 will let you know.

Where to Watch PSVR 2 Game Reveals Today @3PM PT

PlayStation VR 2 doesn’t have a release date yet, although Sony is promising to toss out a number of game trailers today that might give us a good idea of at least some of the launch content arriving alongside the company’s next-gen VR headset.

The video goes live today at 3PM PT (local timezone here), and promises to deliver “some exciting reveals from our third-party partners, plus a sneak peek at several games in development for PlayStation VR 2.”

Check out the livestream below:

As for which games to expect in the reveal—that’s still largely a mystery. We’re at least guaranteed to see more of Horizon: Call of the Mountain, the PSVR 2 exclusive from Firesprite and Guerilla Games. We’ve seen a short clip on Twitter that’s promising a “new look” during State of Play.

Horizon: Call of the Mountain is said to let platers meet Aloy (the main character of the Horizon games) and “other familiar faces,” however they will play as a completely new character.

There are a few unfounded rumors floating around, so please ingest with salt: a Killzone franchise game from Supermassive Games, a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II VR mode, Resident Evil Village VR mode, and even reports of a Half-Life Alyx port from Valve. Some of these are dubious at best (looking at you, HLA), so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Whatever the case, it’s clear the community has high expectations of AAA-quality titles coming to PSVR 2. The company has previously confirmed that “20+ major first-party and third-party titles” are coming to the headset at launch. Considering the company is already talking about launch titles, we’re really hoping they drop some sort of release window on us today.

Kuo: PlayStation VR2 Mass Production To Start H2 2022

A prominent supply chain analyst claims PSVR 2 mass production will begin in H2 2022.

Ming-Chi Kuo is a TF International Securities analyst mostly known for predicting Apple products & moves over a year in advance using his supply chain sources. In April he released a report detailing the apparent resolution and production target for Meta’s upcoming Project Cambria headset.

In a Tweet posted today Kuo claims “the assembler and several component providers” of PSVR 2 will start mass production in H2 2022 and ship 1.5 million units. Based on this, Kuo speculates Sony would be ready to launch in Q1 2023, assuming enough launch titles are available.

During a recent business briefing to investors Sony revealed PSVR 2 will launch with “20+ major first-party and third-party titles”. A “sneak peak” of at least some of these games will be shown in the State Of Play presentation next week.

Kuo isn’t the first analyst to suggest PSVR 2 won’t launch this year. Last month Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, Tweeted that both Apple and Sony’s VR products were delayed to 2023. Young told us Sony will only have a very limited supply by year’s end, so any serious launch would have to happen in 2023. In late February, YouTube channel PSVR Without Parole claimed to have sources for PSVR 2’s launch window being Q1 2023.

Sony hasn’t yet officially announced a release window for PSVR 2, but opened signups in February to be notified when preorders launch. As such, we can’t be sure whether there is truly a delay or if 2023 was Sony’s plan all along.

Sony To Show ‘Sneak Peek’ At PSVR 2 Games In State Of Play Next Week

Sony will offer a “sneak peek” at upcoming PSVR 2 games in a State Of Play presentation next week.

A post on the PlayStation Blog confirms that the showcase will air at 3pm PT/6pm ET/11pm UK on June 2. The show will consist of about 30 minutes of “announcements and updates”, though isn’t entirely dedicated to PSVR 2. Instead, the show will offer “a sneak peek at several games in development for PlayStation VR2.”

PSVR 2 Games Sneak Peek Confirmed

The post doesn’t confirm if we’ll hear any new information on the actual hardware at the show but, typically, Sony does put out disclaimers saying what won’t be at an event, just to temper expectations. With that disclaimer missing here, it’s possible we do get at least some info on the headsets release date and price.

Currently PSVR 2 is rumored to be launching in early 2023 and we’ve seen a handful of games confirmed. These include one first-party title, Horizon Call of the Mountain, and several third-party efforts like Among Us VR and Firmament. Developers like nDreams and Fast Travel Games are also confirmed to be working on games for the headset. Rumored titles also include a VR version of Gran Turismo 7 and Resident Evil 8.

Earlier this week PlayStation boss Jim Ryan revealed that Sony is planning over 20 games for the headset’s launch. You can keep up with every announced and rumored game for the headset here and follow along with everything else we know about the device here.

Sony Confirms 20+ Games for PlayStation VR2 Launch

After Fast Travel Games teased working on multiple PlayStation VR2 videogames earlier this week, now Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has divulged something even more exciting. Details have emerged that PlayStation VR2 will have over 20 titles available at launch – whenever that might be.

PSVR2 games

The details come from a recent Sony investor presentation, with page 23 of the deck (seen above) clearly stating “20+ major first-party and third-party titles confirmed for PS VR2 launch.” So not even the launch window – which is usually the first 2-3 months after release – but on day one by the sound of it.

No further information was released regarding which videogames these might be although it was paired with an image of the previously announced spinoff Horizon Call of the Mountain from Firesprite and Guerilla Games. That’s not the only title that’s been teased for the upcoming headset.  Medieval Dynasty, Pavlov ShackEngram, Runner, as well as unnamed projects from Coatsink and Fast Travel Games.

“Right now, there is a considerable amount of money being spent on partnerships with independent and other third-party developers to secure a considerable pipeline of attractive VR content at the launch of PlayStation VR2,” said SIE president Jim Ryan, VGC reports. “That energy, that effort and that money will continue to grow as the installed base of PlayStation VR 2 headsets grows also.”

Horizon VR: Call of the Mountain

While it is certainly good that SIE is planning a strong lineup of games for PlayStation VR2’s launch, when that’ll take place is still unknown. PlayStation 5 is still suffering from supply chain issues making the console extremely difficult to get hold of. This is detailed on page 12 of the deck with PlayStation 4 outselling the PS5 in year 2 and that’s not expected to change until the PS5’s fourth year.

This likely means PlayStation VR2 won’t arrive until 2023 as several rumours have suggested.

That could very well change as the year goes on. For further updates keep reading gmw3.

Apex Construct Creator Drops PlayStation VR2 Tease

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) still hasn’t put virtual reality (VR) gamers out of their misery and revealed a launch date for PlayStation VR2 but that hasn’t stopped developers from dropping teasing support. The latest comes from Fast Travel Games, the studio behind futuristic bow shooter Apex Construct.

The VR studio left a less than subtle hint about its intentions to develop projects for PlayStation VR2 over on Twitter. While there was no mention of what videogames it might be planning – could it be a new IP or maybe Apex Construct 2? – there was one additional teasing bit of info, a hashtag saying “more than one”.

So by the sound of it, Fast Travel Games is currently working on at least two VR titles for PlayStation VR2; which is exciting. This adds to a steadily growing list of videogames confirmed for the upcoming headset. These include Medieval Dynasty, Pavlov Shack by Vankrupt Games, Maze Theory’s Engram, anime-inspired Runner, an unannounced one from Coatsink; and, of course, Horizon Call of the Mountain.

As well as Apex Construct, Fast Travel Games has also released The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets and Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife, both in-house developed titles, whilst its new publishing arm has released both Virtuoso and Cities VR.

PlayStation VR2

The long-awaited follow up to SIE’s first VR headset released in 2016, the PlayStation VR2 is expected to offer a sizable leap over its predecessor. It’ll house a 4k HDR display, a 110-degree field of view (FoV), headset haptics, eye tracking (for foveated rendering), inside-out tracking, a new vent design, IPD adjustment, new controllers, and a simpler set-up with a single cable going to the PlayStation 5.

Fast Travel Games’ timing is interesting as it comes just a few weeks ahead of what would’ve been E3 2022. The annual videogame extravaganza has been completely cancelled this year but that hasn’t stopped companies from preparing their usual press events. Maybe they’ll be sharing more regarding the VR project around then? If that happens then gmw3 will keep you updated.
