PlayStation VR Live The Game Video Showcases Top First Person Titles at Launch

There are plenty of trailers to watch as the launch of the PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD) took place yesterday, with an incredible number of titles that accompanied it. If you can’t get through them all, then PlayStation has put together a combination of titles in on video where you take on certain personas.

Concentrating on the face of one player, many different characters are taken on, featuring Farpoint, Gran Turismo, The London Heist, and Batman Arkham VR. All of these titles are seamlessly put together in the video below, and it gives a pretty great idea of what you can become when using the PlayStation VR.

50 Days Of PS VR #1: ‘Farpoint’ is One Of VR’s Most Promising Shooters

50 Days Of PS VR #1: ‘Farpoint’ is One Of VR’s Most Promising Shooters

This is it. PlayStation VR launches tomorrow. We’ve been on an epic journey counting down the last 50 days to the launch of the platform and we’re sad to say that this is the last entry. Thanks to everyone that’s joined us! But dry those tears; we’re going out with a bang, looking at one of our most anticipated PS VR games on the horizon: Farpoint.

Developed by Impulse Gear, Farpoint is a hugely promising first-person shooter coming exclusively to Sony’s headset in the near future. In it, you explore a hostile alien planet that’s littered with bug like enemies. You trek through desert-like environments, blowing up bad guys with your machine gun and taking in some spectacular sights. It’s essentially Starship Troopers in VR, which is nothing to complain about.

But that’s not what gets us so excited about Farpoint. The star of the show isn’t so much the game (which is really good) but the new controller it’s coming with, the PlayStation Aim controller. This is a little like the Sharpshooter peripheral that came with the PlayStation Move back in the day, though it’s a standalone device that doesn’t need Sony’s motion controllers to work. You hold the rifle-shaped device with both hands, with analog sticks on both handles to help you walk.

While it isn’t the most innovative idea, it brings a new level of depth to the FPS experience, and that’s wonderfully demonstrated in Farpoint. Bugs crawl down from the sides of walls, pop up from the sandy floor and charge at you from a distance, and you’ll constantly be desperately switching targets in an attempt to take them all down. You bring the gun up to your eye-line to aim, giving the game a distinct Call of Duty-like feel.

The key to Farpoint is the variety it presents in locations, enemy types and weapons. You’ll side-step along sheer cliff faces, making sure not to be caught off guard by enemies from above. Some bugs will try and hack away at you while others will spit acidy globs of liquid for you to shoot out of the air. While you start off with a machine gun, you’ll soon arm yourself with other primary and secondary weapons that will be better suited to taking down some opponents.

We’ve played Farpoint, and the Aim controller genuinely makes it so good that we’re hoping for a truly memorable FPS campaign out of it. We also know the controller will be utilized for other games, which gives us hope for the future of the genre on PS VR in general.

We don’t have a final release date for Farpoint yet, though we’re expecting it to arrive with the Aim controller sometime in 2017. PlayStation VR, meanwhile, launches tomorrow.

50 DAYS OF PS VR COUNTDOWN

Farpoint Release Date, Price and Bundle Listed by Gamestop

Prior to the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in June Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) held a pre-E3 press conference revealing lots of new information about forth coming titles for the PlayStation VR. One of those to be revealed was first-person shooter (FPS) Farpoint from developer Impulse Gear. Then during the show the new AIM VR gun controller was unveiled making its debut alongside Farpoint. Now retailer GameStop has listed the videogame along with a price, launch date and bundle option.

The US GameStop website has Farpoint priced at $49.99 USD with a release date of 30th, June 2017. Now this might just be a place holder date as no official release date has yet been announced by Impulse Gear, as the retailers UK site still lists TBA.

The other product listing on GameStop is for Farpoint and the AIM Controller. This has the same release date along with a price of $79.99. No individual launch date has been revealed for the controller so at present this is the only timeline to go on at the moment.

Farpoint has been the only title demoed with the new controller so far so it’s very possible that its release may coincide with the videogames launch. But the PlayStation VR already has a number of accessories available to purchase for those that have pre-ordered the headset. VRFocus created an accessory guide for those available at the time, but since then several more additions have been released. These include two protective hard cases to store and transport the HMD, and two charging display stands that can hold the device whilst charging controllers.

As further details on Farpoint and the AIM Controller are released, VRFocus will keep you updated.

If you managed to miss the news yesterday, SIE announced the PlayStation 4 Slim and the PlayStation 4 Pro – previously codenamed PlayStation Neo. The announcement means a significant new hardware line up going into the festive period for the company, with the slim launching this month, PlayStation VR in October and PlayStation 4 Pro in November. In terms of what the Pro will bring to the VR headset, Mark Cerny the Lead System Architect at PlayStation commented: “Developers can choose to increase the crispness of the VR scenes, make special effects richer, or to offer higher frame rates to make VR more immersive.”
