Adam Savage Creates Amazing Custom Pistol Whip Oculus Touch Grip

In a new video on the Tested YouTube channel, Adam Savage of Mythbusters fame has created a custom gun grip for his Oculus Touch controller to use while playing Cloudhead Games’ Pistol Whip.

Pistol Whip was one of our favorite VR releases of 2019. The rhythm-shooter kept us coming back for more, and has received a bunch of free updates with new songs since release. As it turns out, Adam Savage is also a big fan of Pistol Whip and was inspired to create a custom gun grip for his Oculus Touch controller, in order to add a bit more realism to his play sessions.

Most VR enthusiasts will have seen some form of 3D printed objects that can be made or bought to use with VR headsets or controllers. There are loads of 3D printed gun grips similar to the one made by Adam, but also many other objects that allow you to do things like wall-mount your headset, make modifications to the headset’s fit or strap, or even play a more realistic game of table tennis.

However, most of the designs you’ll find online are just 3D printed plastic — in his Pistol Whip grip build, Savage went a bit further and added aluminum to the top of a printed plastic gun grip. It was then finished off with an amazing acid-etched custom design with his name on the sides. The whole build took Savage a couple of hours and the end result is stunning. Not only does it look fantastic, but it also adds significant weight to the controller as well. This brings it more in line with the weight of a real pistol, adding an extra layer of immersion and realism to the game.

“That was officially a lot of fun,” said Savage after completing the building and trying the grip out. “[But] a lot more work, since it’s heavy.” This isn’t the first time Savage has created a custom grip for VR controllers — a few months ago, he made custom hilts to use while playing Beat Saber.

Have you made or bought any custom grips for your VR controllers? Let us know in the comments below.

Rhythm Shooter Pistol Whip Sets Sights on July Launch for PlayStation VR

Pistol Whip

Cloudhead Games’ Pistol Whip is one of the more unique rhythm-action videogames available for virtual reality (VR) headsets but PlayStation VR owners have been missing out. That’s going to come to an end next month with a confirmed release date announced.

Pistol Whip

PlayStation VR players will be able to look forward to shooting enemies to thumping tunes in just over a month’s time, with Pistol Whip due to launch on 28th July for the headset. It will feature all 15 scenes currently available in the PC and Oculus Quest versions, as well as 26 brand new trophies to unlock.

As for new content Cloudhead Games delayed the release of the ‘Religion’ update from the start of the month, rolling it out today instead. The last of the regular monthly updates, ‘Religion’ brings with it a new scene, 3 difficulties and a John Wick-inspired Baba Yaga pistol collection. In a statement the developer describes the scene as: “Religion is the pinnacle of Pistol Whip’s orchestral and cinematic action soundtrack, bringing you through a brutalist and sci-fi-inspired cityscape and into a tough-as-nails bullet hell.” It should keep players entertained at a whopping five-and-a-half-minutes.

Alongside the PlayStation VR and ‘Religion’ announcements, Cloudhead Games detailed its 2020 roadmap. For August there’s the ‘Heartbreaker’ update including 3 new scenes, 2 new modifiers, new customization options bringing a poppy and summery vibe to PC VR and Oculus Quest headsets – the PlayStation VR version will arrive later. Plus Oculus Quest will also get achievements.

Pistol Whip

Later on in Q4 2020 there will be a two-part update, ‘Action Pack 1 / The Concierge’. Released at the same time the Action Pack will feature a cinematic campaign as well as new weapon and enemy types. Details for ‘The Concierge’ have yet to be revealed.

Pistol Whip has received rave reviews with VRFocus saying in its playtest: “Pistol Whip is huge amounts of fun even on the easiest difficulty setting, suitable for VR players no matter their skill level.”

With plenty more still to come from Cloudhead Games VRFocus will continue to keep you updated on developments.

Pistol Whip Developers Announce PSVR Release Date, Heartbreaker Update, And ‘Concierge’ Campaign

Cloudhead Games released the 15th song for its hit action-rhythm VR shooter Pistol Whip and announced huge updates planned for the game throughout 2020.

First of the announcements is that PlayStation VR owners should be able to get their hands on the game on July 28th. Their latest song, Religion, is playable right now on PC or Oculus Quest. The intense new track now ranks as the game’s longest level.

Heartbreaker Trilogy In August

As part of the UploadVR Summer Showcase, Canada-based Cloudhead also revealed its next major steps for Pistol Whip through 2020.

Another free content update called “Heartbreaker” will add a trilogy of new songs to the game “for the lovers” with a vibe that’s a “chilled out action experience” with more abstract environments, water guns, two new modifiers, and achievements.

The “Heartbreaker” update will launch first on PC VR and Quest in August and later on PSVR.

‘Concierge’ Campaign In Q4

Pistol Whip 2020 Roadmap

Late this year Cloudhead plans to make its biggest addition to Pistol Whip since it launched in November 2019. “The Concierge” is scheduled for a Q4 2020 launch alongside an “action pack” that will add new enemies, weapons and mechanics “all framed by a cinematic action campaign.”

Though details are slim beyond that, the addition of a campaign to Pistol Whip should string together the game’s arcade intensity in an entirely new way.

We’re big fans of Pistol Whip — I rated it 5/5 — even though it originally launched with only 10 songs because of its deep challenge curve which can be unlocked by activating a “Deadeye” modifier that turns off aim assist. The game is a hit too — raking in $2 million from buyers on Oculus Quest alone — and the development team behind the game expanded the title regularly with additional modifiers and scenes.

I’ll be looking forward to Heartbreaker and Concierge then to see how it changes one of my favorite VR games.

Pistol Whip’s ‘Religion’ Update Arrives Next Week

Pistol Whip - Religion

Cloudhead Games said it was going to happen and next week it will, the regular monthly updates for Pistol Whip are coming to an end. The studio is set to release ‘Religion’ adding an epic new scene and gun collection as it begins its long term roadmap for Pistol Whip.

Pistol Whip - Full Throttle

As the studio notes in a tweet, ‘Religion’ is ‘A five-and-a-half minute gauntlet’ to properly test players with an assault of bullets and music. Additionally, there’s the Baba Yaga pistol collection for those who like to have a variety of gun choices.

Of course, this isn’t the end of Cloudhead Games’ Pistol Whip updates, more will be coming in the future just less regularly. As VRFocus has previously reported a major content expansion is planned for later this year adding new scenes, modifiers and more.

One of the big additions coming this summer is PlayStation VR support. No date has been set at the moment but the studio has confirmed Pistol Whip will use one PlayStation Move controller by default.

Pistol Whip

Pistol Whip is one of the more unusual rhythm-action videogames on the market, offering intense gun gameplay to thumping music. Why that might not sound very unique, it’s a combination that has proven to be highly popular and addictive – the Virtual Athletics League (VAL) even used the title earlier this year. “Pistol Whip is huge amounts of fun even on the easiest difficulty setting, suitable for VR players no matter their skill level,” said VRFocus in its PC VR review.

As Cloudhead Games continues its support of Pistol Whip VRFocus will keep you updated.

Super Stylish Rhythm-shooter ‘Pistol Whip’ Finally Arrives on PSVR

Pistol Whip (2019), the VR rhythm-shooter from Cloudhead Games, has been available on Oculus Quest and SteamVR-compatible headsets since late last year. Although it’s a few days shy of its originally planned July 28th release date, Pistol Whip is now here on PSVR.

Update (July 30th, 2020): Cloudhead has finally launched Pistol Whip for PSVR. The stylish rhythm-shooter is now live on the PlayStation Store, priced at $25. If you’ve never heard of Pistol Whip, check out why we gave it Road to VR’s 2019 SteamVR Game of the Year Award to learn more.

Original Article (April 29th, 2020): Cloudhead hasn’t said specifically when it will arrive on PSVR this summer (see update), however the studio says it will continue supporting the game in the months following its release on PSVR with fresh content updates, new levels, customization options, “and more to be revealed,” the studio teases in a PS blog post.

In case you haven’t heard of it before, or seen the game’s cinematic-style action, we gave Pistol Whip Road to VR’s 2019 SteamVR Game of the Year Award for good reason. It has an uncanny ability to marry rhythm and shooting, and does so with a really unique flair. It’s one of those games that inspires the flow state, where you sync up with the game and simply react; you shoot baddies on the beat and automatically move forward at a constant, frenetic clip to the punchy beats of each level.

Cloudhead has been issuing regular monthly updates since its release in November 2019 that bring new content to the game, much of it inspired by different film genres each time. This comes part and parcel with new game modes, weapons, skins, etc—all of it free.

Make sure to check out our review of Pistol Whip to find out why we gave it a really solid [8/10].

Rhythm Action Shooter Pistol Whip Aims for PlayStation VR Release Summer 2020

Pistol Whip

The PlayStation VR has some great virtual reality (VR) titles available but there are plenty of PC-based videogames that would work well on the system. Cloudhead Games seems to think so as the developer has just announced it’ll be porting the excellent Pistol Whip this summer.

Pistol Whip

Pistol Whip combines both rhythm action gameplay with the feeling of being an unstoppable badass, most often compared to John Wick. Gameplay is fairly straight forward, gun in hand you have to survive levels – called ‘scenes’ – by taking down enemies however you like, shooting them in the face of throwing in a quick gun butt.

As this is a rhythm action experience surviving isn’t enough, you also want to score as many points as possible; achieved by hitting targets to the beat or chaining them together. With a highly stylised visual design and some pounding tracks to play to, Pistol Whip is one of those non-stop sensory assaults.

To further mix up the gameplay players can select from a range of modifiers, removing the aim assist or adding a second gun. Each one affecting the score multiplier in some way.

Pistol Whip - PSVR

When it comes to the PlayStation VR version Cloudhead Games has confirmed Pistol Whip can be played with one PlayStation Move controller by default, with intuitive gestures to reload and melee. Due to the hectic nature of the gameplay Pistol Whip also makes for a decent workout tool.

The studio has continually updated Pistol Whip since its release for PC VR headsets and Oculus Quest in November 2019, adding new scenes as well as other content improvements, the latest being Dark Skies. These are all expected to be part of the PlayStation VR version. Once it has been released new content updates will follow in the months to come.

Check out VRFocus review of Pistol Whip which awarded the title a decent four-star rating, noting: “Pistol Whip is huge amounts of fun even on the easiest difficulty setting, suitable for VR players no matter their skill level.”

Cloudhead Games has pencilled in a summer 2020 window for Pistol Whip’s release for PlayStation VR. When further details are made available VRFocus will let you know.

Pistol Whip Confirmed For PSVR Release This Summer

Cloudhead Games says its arcade shooter Pistol Whip should launch on PSVR this summer.

The cinematic shooter with rhythm elements debuted on PC VR and Oculus Quest in November and looks like it should be a nice fit for PSVR given its forward-facing design. I rated Pistol Whip 5/5 because of its satisfying gameplay and addictive challenge curve which starts with an auto-assist mode that makes you feel like a badass John Wick. The title gains significant depth with built -in modifiers like a Deadeye mode that takes away the superpowered aiming.

There’s no specific release date announced yet for the game.

The game launched with 10 tracks or “scenes” inspired by various sci-fi and action movies set to thumping music. Since release Cloudhead added four more free tracks to bring the total to 14 as of this writing. The latest addition, called Dark Skies, is my favorite.

Check out the gameplay video of the latest track:

After PSVR release Cloudhead Games is planning “exciting new content updates, modifiers, and more to be revealed in the months after launch.”

We are still waiting on a new release date announcement for Iron Man VR on PSVR after COVID-19-related delays. The confirmation of Pistol Whip for release on PSVR should be a welcome addition to the release schedule for PlayStation 4 owners. We’ll bring you the latest on Pistol Whip as soon as we have it.

PlayStation VR owners, are you excited to finally play Pistol Whip this summer? Let us know in the comments below.

Pistol Whip’s “Dark Skies” Update Adds new Scene, Guns & More

Pistol Whip - Dark Skies

Ever since Cloudhead Games released rhythm action title Pistol Whip late last year the studio has rolled out a new update each month, adding a new scene (track) as well as other enhancements. Last month it was ‘Full Throttle’ and today sees the launch of ‘Dark Skies’.

Just like the previous updates ‘Dark Skies’ has a theme, a 194X alternate history scene set in a dieselpunk dirigible. The team says the scene: “draws action inspiration from the classic airship scene in Ninja Gaiden, as well as the visual stylings of Rocketeer, Sky Captain, and The First Avenger.”

In addition to the new playable content, the update also features the Antiques Collection offering three new wartime pistols and a new metal finish for all weapons, plus further polish to the whole experience.

Cloudhead Games notes that May’s update will be the last of the monthly feature rollouts as the studio looks towards its longterm roadmap for Pistol Whip. A major update is planned for later in the year with a look to adding new scenes, new modifiers, and new ways to play, as development continues to expand the gameplay, providing greater player choice.

Pistol Whip - Dark Skies

Pistol Whip was designed as a non-stop action shooter inspired by the likes of John Wick. You can choose to shoot or melee enemies whilst dodging incoming bullets like a movie badass, all to a thumping soundtrack and some intense visuals. On hand are a selection of modifiers helping to change the gameplay, adding dual-wield weapons or removing the aim assist to increase the score multiplier. VRFocus gave Pistol Whip a solid four-stars in its review, noting: “Pistol Whip is huge amounts of fun even on the easiest difficulty setting, suitable for VR players no matter their skill level.

Pistol Whip – Dark Skies is available now, compatible with Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, HTC Vive and Valve Index headsets.  VRFocus will continue its coverage of Pistol Whip, reporting back as further updates are announced.

Pistol Whip Adds Ninja Gaiden-Inspired ‘Dark Skies’ And Antique Handguns

The latest update for Cloudhead’s Pistol Whip is out now with a new scene inspired by alternate history World War II era timelines and Ninja Gaiden’s airship.

The “Dark Skies” update for addictive arcade shooter Pistol Whip is available now on Oculus Quest and PC VR. It adds the 14th scene to the game called “Dark Skies” with visuals inspired by movies like The Rocketeer, Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow, and Captain America: The First Avenger. The update also includes three new “wartime” pistols in a new “Antiques Collection” as well as a metal finish for all weapons.

Here’s a teaser video for “Dark Skies”:

Canada-based Cloudhead Games is planning one more monthly update to the game after this one before transitioning “toward our long-term roadmap,” according to the company. The developers say they have a “big vision” for the game with “new ways to play” alongside changes “building toward a major update planned for later this year.” The studio is also planning to bring the game to PSVR as well.

I tried out the new scene and it is probably my favorite in the game. One part of the level — with baddies running along catwalks to either side of you — looks like it’ll be one of the most challenging areas of the game to play with the Deadeye modifier, which removes the game’s standard aim-assist.

Check out my gameplay video below and you can check out Dark Skies now on Steam and the Oculus Store for Quest or Rift.
