Review: Soul Axiom Rebooted

There’s been a bit of a renewed surge in the videogame industry for revitalising classic titles which were once massively popular. Capcom’s Resident Evil series has seen this on several occasions and Square will soon be releasing the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Remake. The virtual reality (VR) scene is a little too young to see anything on quite that scale but there are standard videogames rife for a little VR treatment. The latest comes from Wales Interactive which is enhancing a PC puzzle title for new formats, Soul Axiom Rebooted.

Soul AxiomLike many reboots, this launch isn’t going to be purely about putting a glossy finish on the previous Soul Axiom as the videogame was only released in 2016. Yes, the visuals have been enhanced thanks to a new game engine but the studio has also added new features such as an objective system and mid-level checkpoints to make the experience less daunting and more manageable. That’s all great yet does it translate into a true VR experience?

First of all Soul Axiom Rebooted seems to have been primarily created for a release on Nintendo Switch, with the PC edition also including VR. Which does mean VR is more of an add-on rather than the sole reason for the reboot. And this is noticeable throughout due to the interaction mechanics which don’t actually involve any motion controls whatsoever, it’s all sticks and buttons, removing that unique sense of presence VR offers (more on this later).

Soul Axiom Rebooted’s storyline is a strange cyberspace thriller involving death, immortality and preserving memories for future generations. The premise is that some company has created a virtual universe called Elysia, where people can upload their memories to either relive them over and over again or for friends and family to remember those that have passed on. You play an unnamed character introduced to this fantastical world, given little reason to why you’re there or what’s going on when things start to get a little twisted.

Soul AxiomWhat Soul Axiom Rebooted does well it tends to do really well at, puzzles and environments. The main hub world looks like a glorious homage to Tron, towering neon-lit buildings of minimal design which stretch into the distance, seemingly devoid of life. There’s a stunning use of light and colour in several areas, a digital dreamscape which is made all the more impressive in VR. In stark contrast, some of the main levels are set in more real-world settings like a jungle, museum, island and other locations. These certainly don’t have quite the awe and spectacle of the hub yet serve their purpose well enough.

There is a real emptiness to Soul Axiom Rebooted due to the general lack of NPC’s, just a lot of walking around going puzzle to puzzle. Once the main puzzles of a location are complete you’ll get video snippets, memories to help flesh out your character. However, it’s difficult to really connect to the person and character in any meaningful way so it’s best to get stuck into the puzzles themselves.

When it comes to this side of things Soul Axiom Rebooted has got you covered. It’s a massive videogame offering hours and hours of gameplay – and that doesn’t mean loads of walking. While recent puzzle titles such as Ghost Giant and The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets are delightful in their design and execution, the gameplay time is painfully short, no worries about that here.

Soul AxiomGameplay mechanics revolve around your hands in a sort of Karate Kid ‘wax on, wax off’ style. For example, the first magical skill you gain is the ability to materialise/dematerialise certain objects, dropping a ramp in to reach a higher level or removing a blockage. Another is a play/pause skill to move objects and stop them in a particular location. These are colour coded into the puzzles for clarity, the former a blue hue and the latter in green.

What’s annoying from a VR perspective is that lack of being able to use your actual hands and arms, with the right and left simply controlled by the corresponding triggers. Be rest assured, anyone who has played even a little VR will instantly want to put their hand out and grab an object or use their powers like some sort of Jedi. There’s none of that here which really negates the need to stand up, playing Soul Axiom Rebooted seated is the wiser choice.

The videogame does also suffer with the odd technical issue, a little bit of latency here and there. Mostly though it was the play/pause ability which became a nuisance. On the occasional puzzle – a tall one involving pipes in the jungle comes to mind – trying to make an object ‘play’ either didn’t work or only partially worked. Infuriating when you know and can see the solution, dragging a puzzle on longer than it should.

Much like Wales Interactive’s other VR titles Soul Axiom Rebooted elicits a mixture of emotions, joy, puzzlement and dab of exasperation. Beautiful and unnerving, Soul Axiom Rebooted has plenty to see and do, great for puzzle fans seeking an expansive experience. Yet the addition of VR does feel like a last-minute inclusion, putting you in an impressive virtual world without the ability to reach out and touch it.

Travel Down The Time Tunnel To The Prehistoric Jungle In Time Carnage

Travelling through time to see what dinosaurs were really like holds a certain appeal, especially since its offers the chance to finally solve the ‘scales or feathers’ debate. Time Carnage is not particularly interested in academic pursuits, however. You are mostly here to shoot things.

Time Carnage puts the payer in the role of a time traveller, bouncing round through time putting down threats which the aid of a trusty armoury of weapons.

Time Carnage

Today’s VRFocus gameplay video goes all the way back to the days when dinosaurs ruled the earth – as such, they are not too pleased about you being on their turf. As such, huge deadly insects, fast raptors and big, plodding triceratops will crash through the trees towards you to be shot down.

Time Carnage is basically a wave shooter, though one which offers a regular change of scenery to switch things up a bit. You have four weapons available, which must be chosen before your start the level. Though you start out with only a hang gun and sub machine gun, lots more weapons are available to be unlocked as your progress, including some hidden weaponry.

Choosing your loadout is only half the story, though, weapons will only reload when they aren’t being held, so you need to quickly get used to the flow of grabbing and dropping weaponry as needed to let it recharge. There is also an energy shield which can protect you from attacks, but be armed, it only has a limited charge.

Also worth looking out for is the Time Paradox, which if activated, slows time to a crawl, giving you extra space to take out that horde of dinosaurs and insects swarming your way. You can read the full review for Time Carnage here and the full gameplay video is available to view below.

Competition: Win An EU Code For PlayStation VR’s Time Carnage

Time travel isn’t exactly devoid of risk. You travel from century to century, tipping your hat to Abraham Lincoln here and doffing your cap to William Shakespeare there. It’s all fun and games until someone loses a parent and finds they don’t exist anymore. Retconning history rarely seems to go well, and usually results in the future being messed up. Wales Interactive’s Time Carnage pits you with a simple philosophy: if you’re going to wander through history, for goodness sake bring a gun.

Time CarnageTime Carnage takes players through numerous time periods, having you fight against an array of different enemies. It’s a fast-paced action virtual reality (VR) videogame, and players will be able to select from a variety of weapons per time period in order to defend yourself in such a manner that best suits you. Players can dynamically swap out active guns in the middle of the action; but choosing the right load-out for each area is key as you traverse a post-apocalyptic wasteland, lush prehistoric jungle, futuristic city or icy tundra and fight against enemies such as dinosaurs, monsters, robots and zombies.

We’ve teamed up with Wales Interactive to give you the opportunity to win a code for the title on PlayStation VR.  We’ve got two to give away for the European region – so you’ll need a EU PlayStation account in order to claim and play them.  All you need to do to enter is use the Gleam widget below and interact with our social media accounts in some way. Future Proof, Not Bulletproof – VRFocus Takes Aim At The Zombie Horde In Time Carnage

Today’s VRFocus gameplay footage takes you through a swirly wormhole to travel through to the far future with Time Carnage, a sci-fi themed shooter that transports the player through various bits of time and space to take down hostile creatures.

Time Carnage puts the player in the role of a time traveller, charged with visiting various points throughout Earth’s history and destroying whatever dangerous creatures you may find there.

Time Carnage screenshot

The first level takes you to the distant year 3032, where a terrible nuclear was has driven most of humanity underground. In the ruins of an American town called Morganville, you will encounter the wretched remnants who were unable to reach safety, afflicted with a gnawing hunger for flesh – yours, to be precise.

Zombies are not the only threat, however, fast-moving four-legged creatures will also charge at you, looking like a cross between a dog and a naked mole rat. To defend yourself you have four weapon slots which you can equip with any of the guns you have unlocked. You also have a force shield, but enough hammering, and it will break, leaving you at the mercy of the monsters.

To begin with only the handgun and sub machine gun are unlocked, but others are made available as you play through the levels, including some hidden weapons that are scattered in various places. Any weapon not currently being held will reload automatically, so the gameplay becomes a case of tracking which weapon currently has to most ammo in it.

As you advance through, you will be taken to new environments, such as a pre-historic forest where you will encounter dinosaurs, or a high-tech futuristic city to fight rogue robots. Each enemy has slightly different behaviours and some need a specific weapon type to efficiently eliminate, so choosing the right weapon loadout is important.

PlayStation VR Retail Release of Don’t Knock Twice Comes to North America

PlayStation VR is the one virtual reality (VR) headset that gets physical retail releases. Last October Wales Interactive brought horror title Don’t Knock Twice to stores in the UK, today it’s the turn of North America thanks to publisher Perp Games.

Supporting PlayStation 4 with optimisations for PlayStation VR, Don’t Knock Twice is based on the 2017 movie of the same name, a psychological horror based on a urban legend about a vengeful, demonic witch, who can be summoned by knocking twice on a old derelict house. For the videogame, players are cast as a guilt-ridden mother who must save her estranged daughter. They find themselves inside a grand manor house which must be explored as they search for her.

“The horror genre includes some of the most riveting videogames out there,” said Mickey Torode, director of publishing at Perp Games in a statement. “Fear and atmosphere really suck players into the gaming experience, and VR creates another method of really captivating and involving players. We look forward to bringing more immersive VR experiences like Don’t Knock Twice to the PlayStation platform.”

VRFocus reviewed the HTC Vive version of Don’t Knock Twice, saying: ” it provides one of the scariest, heart thumping VR experiences out there, with a beautifully designed mansion to explore – especially when you get to free-roam.”

Don’t Knock Twice is available for PlayStation 4, including support for PlayStation VR for $39.99 USD at various North American retailers.

Wales Interactive will soon release its next VR project across multiple head-mounted displays (HMDs). Revealed last year, Time Carnage is billed as a ‘frantic VR survival wave shooter’, wherein players travel through time and wreak havoc through worlds swarming with dinosaurs, monsters, robots and zombies. They can customise their loadout from a total of 25 different weapons, including guns, flamethrowers and time-stopping grenades. The title will launch for PlayStation VR on 16th March 2018. This will be followed by a Steam release with both HTC Vive and Oculus Rift compatibility on 16th April 2018.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Wales Interactive, reporting back with the latest news and announcements from the studio.

Time Carnage will be Wales Interactive’s third foray into virtual reality (VR) videogames. Debuting in the medium in 2014, Infinity Runner was compatible with Oculus Rift development kits. Last year saw Don’t Knock Twice arrive on PlayStation VR and PC-based VR platforms, and also marked the beginning of the developer’s retail relationship with Perp Games. Time Carnage will be the next title delivered to consumers through this partnership.

In Time Carnage, players enter the role of a trophy hunter as they travel through time and wreak havoc in worlds swarming with zombies, monsters, robots and dinosaurs. Armed with an arsenal of over 25 spine-shattering guns, flamethrowers and time-stopping detonators, it’s time for the carnage to begin.

As players make their way through the videogame’s 16-tier campaign they’ll unlock weaponry ranging from the AM Rifle and double barrel Thump-Gun to the SOTA precision laser bow.
