Hands-on: ‘The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets’ is a Heartwarming Little Game Set in the Cutest of Dioramas

Fast Travel Games, the studio behind bowshooting adventure Apex Construct (2018), showed off their upcoming title The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets at Gamescom this year. Getting a chance to pop in for a single level, the admittedly short game offers up casual diorama-based puzzles and a heartwarming story cast in the golden hue of a childhood memories past.

A floating island pops into existence before me. My wizened granddad is recalling our time at his summer house, where my sister and I used to spend the days going on adventures and inevitably fighting amongst ourselves.

Using the Oculus Touch controller, I lean forward to spin the island around, a bright and self-contained miniature world where my dear old gran’s tiny house resides. Grabbing hold of the island and turning it reveals a number of curious items such as a locked chest, multiple tiny doors, and plenty of interactive stuff such as a kettle, teacup, and a burning flame. Practically everything is interactive, making the little island seem alive and oozing with that warm, fuzzy feeling.

The object of each stage is to find all of the pets, which is done by completing some of the light puzzles, like setting the kettle to boil over the flame to make a cup of tea using the leaves brushed from a tree overhead, revealing a tiny submarine in the cup which holds a bulbous little kitty inside. Rummaging around for pets can be as simple as looking in the bush near a dog’s bowl, or going through those slightly more elaborate steps to unlock a chest where a cheeky bunny is hiding, the very same rascal my granddad says ate the carrots in the neighbor’s garden.

A few curious little characters pop around too, animated at a lower, claymation-style frame rate. Although I didn’t need much help solving the puzzles, a curious little guy would pop in and out of doors and draw my attention to an overlooked piece of the puzzle.

It only took me a few minutes to complete the stage (a total of five will come at launch) and also find all five hidden coins, which are highlighted by a small sparkling aura. The only real objective though is to find the pets, as the coins are no doubt put there to get the user to focus more clearly on the game’s super detailed environments.

Talking to the game’s creative lead James Hunt, I was told The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets isn’t explicitly for kids despite it’s clear family-friendly appeal. “It’s an everyone game,” Hunt explains, saying that it was designed especially for new VR users of all ages. And while it’s definitely on the casual end of the puzzle spectrum, the well-built little game promises to offer enough variety to keep you playing for what is shaping up to be a single-sitting playsession that should easily wrap up in under an hour.

The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets is set to launch in 2019 on a gang of headsets, including Quest, Rift, PSVR, Valve Index, HTC Vive, and Windows VR headsets. Check out the game’s trailer below:

‘Westworld’ VR Game Now Available on PC VR Headsets, Launch Trailer Here

HBO, Warner Bros., and Survios today released a new VR game set in the wild (and often terrifying) android-filled universe of Westworld.

Called Westworld Awakening, the game takes place during the events of the TV series’ season two, offering up what the studios call a narrative-driven, stealth exploration experience played from the perspective of Kate, a newly self-aware android ‘host’.

Set in the heart of in the Mesa facility’s laboratories and offices, which the studios bill as a “dangerous underworld where no one and nothing is what it seems,” players are pitted against puzzles, and a dark game of manipulating the world (and other hosts) around you by using the seemingly godlike powers of the Quality Assurance tablet.

Just like in the show, Hank, the black-hatted serial killer, is always in close pursuit, forcing you to confront Westworld’s secrets as you try to escape with your artificially intelligent hide intact.

Westworld Awakening was published by HBO and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, and was developed in-house by Survios, the VR studio known for a string of successful VR titles including Raw Data (2017), Creed: Rise to Glory (2019), Sprint Vector (2018) and the upcoming titles Battlewake and The Walking Dead Onslaught.

Westworld Awakening is now available on Steam (Vive, Rift, Index), the Oculus Store (Rift), and Viveport (Vive, Rift, Index) for $30.

‘Takelings House Party’ is a Whimsical VR Party Game of Hide-and-seek, Trailer Here

Indie studio DimnHouse has implemented an interesting twist on hide-and-seek that pits a single VR player against a gaggle of pint-sized mobile users trying their best to escape the VR giant’s murderous wrath.

The objective: mobile users take control of little creatures called ‘Takelings’ that scurry about the suburban home and try to hide from the giant VR user simply named ‘Hal’.

DimnHouse says on the game’s Steam page that the party can progress through the house, which contains five rooms and consequently five different mini-games.

Couch-bound players watch the main screen and control their Takelings via a WiFi-connected smartphone and/or joysticks.

Takelings is slated to release on on July 25th via Steam (Index, Rift, Vive), the Oculus Store (Rift), and Viveport (Index, Rift, Vive).

DimnHouse is a small LA-based team that formed in 2017 with the expressed mission of creating the VR party game. The studio says they hope to brings Takelings to other platforms “soon.”

‘Onward’ for Quest Confirmed to Feature Cross-play with PC VR

Onward, the first-person mil-sim shooter for PC VR, is heading to Quest at some point—that’s what Downpour Interactive founder Dante Buckley announced back at the ESL VR League Season three championship earlier this month. Now, Buckley says the studio is currently also developing Onward to be cross-play compatible with PC VR headsets too.

In a video spotlight with VR League (linked below), Buckley announced that the full consumer release of Onward will feature custom maps, and map building tools so users can recreate whatever maps they’ve always wanted to play in the team-based shooter.

Buckley further says that Onward will also feature a ranking system, something the Early Access game has lacked in spite of its dedicated fanbase. Onward currently offers support for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Valve Index.

It’s uncertain how Downpour will implement cross-play between Quest and PC VR headsets and whether the custom map builder will be available on all platforms. In contrast to the VR shooter Pavlov, which is also consequently headed to Quest, Onward’s fist-party map builder might help ensure that the entire game is playable for all platforms. Pavlov relies on Steam Workshop for its user-generated content, which would necessarily fragment the maps available to its playerbase.

We’ve asked Downpour for comment on how the map builder will work between Quest and PC VR, and will update this piece when we hear back.

Rebellion Unveils ‘Sniper Elite VR’ Gameplay Footage, PC VR & PSVR Confirmed

At E3 today, Rebellion unveiled some fresh gameplay footage and revealed more details behind Sniper Elite VR, the critically acclaimed shooter’s first VR game. The studio also confirmed that PS Aim support is definitely coming to the PSVR version of the game in addition to support for PC VR headsets.

Created in partnership with UK-based studio Just Add Water, Sniper Elite VR takes place in World War II Italy, set prior to the events of Rebellion’s latest entry in the series, Sniper Elite 4 (2017). Unlike previous Sniper Elite titles, the VR game is delivered in the first-person.

With a brand new story written by Tony Schumacher, author of the John Rossett novels, Sniper Elite VR embeds you in the Italian resistance fighting against the Nazis where you’ll be able to explore an array of maps including villages, airfields, and underground bunkers as you fight back to rid Sicily of the U-Boat menace.

Weaponry is said to include sniper rifles (of course), SMGs, pistols, and the tactical ‘Welrod’ suppressed pistol to name a few.

Moreover, Rebellion says Sniper Elite VR will feature free movement, which in the video appears to include teleportation as a locomotion method at least on PSVR. The studio hasn’t mentioned its full list of supported locomotion methods, so we hope to find out more here at E3.

What’s particularly interesting is how Rebellion managed to include the series’ patented X-Ray Kill Cam. According to the video, the game whisks you on an on-rails flight following the path of your bullet, where you then get an up close and personal look at the bone-shattering results of a well placed shot.

Rebellion says they’re supporting PS Aim, Move controllers, as well as DualShock 4 gamepad on PSVR.

Sniper Elite VR is set to arrive on the PlayStation Store for PSVR, and for PC VR headsets via the Oculus Store, Steam, and Viveport. There’s still no launch date on the books, so we’ll just have to wait and see for now.

‘Game of Thrones’ VR Experience Coming Exclusively to Viveport Infinity

HTC today announced that a VR experience based on HBO’s hit TV series Game of Thrones is set to launch exclusively on Viveport Infinity starting tomorrow, supporting Vive and Rift.

The experience, called Beyond the Wall, is said to transport users to the northern border of The Seven Kingdoms to fight and defend ‘The Wall’, the megalithic structure separating the South from the untamed North—a place that plays host to the mysterious rise of an army of undead wights under the behest of the ‘White Walkers’. There, players will be able to test their sword-fighting skills against an undead polar bear and hoard of wights.

Beyond the Wall made its initial debut at select AT&T stores as a ‘4D’ brand engagement activation to promote the season finale of Game of Thrones; this represents the first time users will be able to jump into the experience at home.

Beyond the Wall was created by HBO and Framestore, the Oscar-winning studio known for their work not only in film and TV, but also immersive experiences such as the Game of Throne-themed VR activation Ascend the Wall, and the recent Magic Leap GOT experience The Dead Must Die.

Since Beyond the Wall is exclusive to Viveport Infinity, HTC’s Netflix-style game subscription service, you’ll of course need to be a member to play.

Viveport Infinity is typically available for free for a two-week trial, costing $13 per month afterwards (or $100 annually), which gives you unlimited access to a 500+ VR games and apps. Take note: throughout the month of June, both new and existing Infinity members who own an Oculus Rift or Valve Index will be able to redeem two free months of the service.

There’s just one more catch. Beyond the Wall is launching first in English in the US, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, the UK, and Canada. You can probably thank the patchwork of licensing issues that official IP releases necessarily face when they head across borders.

Vive Studios’ Feature Length Immersive Film ‘7 Miracles’ Now Available on Viveport

Vive Studios has released its ‘feature-length’ immersive film titled 7 Miracles. On the surface, the immersive film is a reenactment of the Gospel of John in the Bible that specifically centers around the seven miracles of Jesus Christ. Under the surface, however, it uses advanced filmmaking techniques such as photogrammetry and volumetric video capture to achieve 8K imagery.

Directed by Rodrigo Cerqueira and Marco Spagnoli, 7 Miracles was shot across Matera and Rome, both classic locales for returning viewers of The Passion of the Christ and Ben Hur. According to the official blog post, “The seven-part episodic feature runs over 70 minutes, making it the first feature-length cinematic experience from Vive Studios,” and one of the longest immersive films we’ve ever seen.

7 Miracles is also notable for winning the ‘Spirit of Raindance: VR Film of The Festival’ award at Raindance Film Festival 2018, as stated by Vive Studios in their blog post at that time.

While the award-winning biblical reenactment is predominantly meant for consumption via Viveport, where it is sold at $20 as a complete PCVR experience, Android owners can also join in on the gospel for $10 via the Google Play store.

Zen-like Adventure ‘Arca’s Path’ to Launch December 4th on All Major VR Platforms

Arca’s Path is a controller-free VR adventure that takes you into a mysterious world, and tasks you with solving puzzles by leading a ball through obstacles using your gaze. The game, produced by Rebellion and developed by Dream Reality Interactive, is slated to launch on December 4th on all major VR platforms.

Arca’s Path follows the story of a young girl who finds a VR video game in a trash heap. While the gameplay itself is based entirely around leading the ball with the game’s gaze-based mechanic, there’s also some story here as well, told through manga-style stills that are dispensed as you make your way through the crumbling road ahead.

The game, launching globally on December 4th, is supporting a wide array of VR platforms including PSVR, HTC Vive, HTC Vive Focus, Oculus Rift, Oculus Go, Gear VR, and Windows VR headsets.

Rebellion is best known in the VR industry for its adaptation of Battlezone (2016), among numerous other PC and console titles including the Sniper Elite series and Rogue Trooper Redux (2018).

Developers Dream Reality Interactive previously worked on VR experience Hold the World (2017) starring iconic broadcaster Sir David Attenborough, and Orbu, an AR game for iOS using Apple’s ARKit. Dream Reality Interactive’s core team previously worked at Sony’s London Studio, with titles such as PlayStation VR Worlds and AR games for Wonderbook.

Sword & Sorcery VR Adventure ‘Witching Tower’ Gets October Launch Date, Trailer Here

Witching Tower, an upcoming action-adventure game that promises to be heavy on sword and sorcery, is headed to HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows VR headsets next month.

Created by Daily Magic Productions, a studio behind many puzzle, RPG and hidden object games for PC and mobile, Witching Tower is slated to land on Steam, the Oculus Store, and Viveport on October 4th, 2018.

The game is said to feature puzzle solving, bow shooting, sword melee combat, and grabbing and throwing objects. The variety of weapons also includes an enchanted lasso, magic vision, and the protagonist’s ability to control the undead.

If the early gameplay footage tells us anything, there’s sure to be some impressive gadgets and massive dungeons to explore as you battle against armor-clad skeletons.

Here’s Daily Magic’s store description of Witching Tower:

Six years ago, the Kingdom of Nemean fought a losing war against an invading empire. All seemed lost—and then a wave of sickness and undeath swept out from a tower at the heart of the Nemean capital. Skeleton soldiers fought the invaders back, but they didn’t stop there. Death and the undeath swept through the kingdom.

The pall of fear and pain that fell over the world only strengthened the undead and their creator, the Queen of the Witching Tower.

The player takes the role of Anna, a girl with a mysterious connection with the undead. For years, she’s been hunted by the Queen. Now Anna has been dragged in chains to the peak of the tower. With the help of some ghostly allies, she must break free, learn about her special connection to the undead, and face her nemesis, the Queen.

Witching Tower is also said to support PlayStation VR, although it’s unclear at this time when the PSVR version will launch.
