Community Download is a weekly discussion-focused articles series published (usually) every Monday in which we pose a single, core question to you all, our readers, in the spirit of fostering discussion and debate. For today’s Community Download, we’re looking at the new hand-tracking feature for Oculus Quest!
Today Oculus announced that hand-tracking is officially coming this week for Oculus Quest! This early version of the feature only supports basic first-party functions like navigating the library, using the Oculus Browser, and so on. No actual app or game support yet, but it’s a start.
The company first announced this feature at Oculus Connect 6 in September, stating that it would arrive in ‘2020’. But in a holiday season surprise they’ve managed to ship it early — for Oculus Quest system apps at least.
This isn’t the first headset to support this feature. HTC’s PC-based Vive Cosmos VR headset also supports optical finger tracking. Doing this on a standalone headset, however, is significantly more difficult, and reports of the Cosmos finger tracking quality have not been great.
That being said, the Oculus Quest hand-tracking SDK releases next week for developers to start integrating the feature into apps. For me, I think apps like Tilt Brush, Nature Treks, Job Simulator, and other less gamey games and apps will be the best examples of what it can do. Something like a shooter or combat-heavy game probably won’t be as good of a fit since fast movements aren’t ideal when using current hand-tracking technology.
Thus, the question: Do you have any other specific suggestions for games you’d want to see with hand-tracking support in Oculus Quest? Let us know your ideas down in the comments below!
