The VR Drop: A Colourful Character Masterclass

March has been a great month for virtual reality (VR) gaming and this final week is no different, with highly anticipated sequels and big IPs making an appearance. So if you’re looking for videogames to spend that hard-earned money on, look no further.

Now There Be Goblins

Now There Be Goblins – Shocktopus Games

First up is the Early Access tower defense videogame Now There Be Goblins, where you have to, unsurprisingly, deal with a few rampaging goblins. Build up your defenses with a selection of powerful structures, place traps and utilise the interactive environment to your advantage. Then there’s always your hammer, allowing you to unleash some melee carnage upon your enemies. Developer Shocktopus Games expects Now There Be Goblins to be in EA for up to a year, adding more levels, enemies and more in that time.

Transformers Beyond Reality – Meta4 Interactive

The big IP of the week comes from Meta4 Interactive in the form of Transformers Beyond Reality, letting PS VR and PlayStation VR players jump into the Hasbro universe. An arcade-style first-person shooter (FPS), in Transformers Beyond Reality you play an Autobot fighting the Decepticons to help save both Earth and Cybertron. And in a nod to the franchise’s history, the character designs are in keeping with the original toy and cartoon aesthetics.

  • Supported platform(s): PlayStation VR and SteamVR
  • Launch date: 31st March
Cosmonious High

Cosmonious High – Owlchemy Lab

Owlchemy Labs, the studio behind some of the most well known VR titles including Job Simulator, returns with another outrageous experience, Cosmonious High. With all the hands-on, zany gameplay you’d expect from the team, this time around you’re the new kid at a colourful intergalactic high school. Here you can learn, paint, make new friends and cause a little chaos, whilst unlocking new abilities such as firing water from your hands to help fix and clean the school.

Moss: Book II – Polyarc

If most PlayStation VR owners don’t buy this next week gmw3 will be surprised, as the eagerly awaited sequel to 2018’s Moss arrives as a platform exclusive. The little mouse that can, Quill, is back out on another adventure aided by you, her ghostly companion. This time around she’s got new puzzles to solve, enemies to fight and tricks up her sleeve including a new hammer. There are also new mechanics to get you more involved in the world, grabbing vines to create new paths for example. You don’t even need to have played the original, the story does continue but it’s all recapped for players new to the series.

  • Supported platform(s): PlayStation VR
  • Launch date: 31st March
Moss Book II

Mythic Defender – Hexware Studio

It’s been a while since gmw3 featured a VR tower defense game on The VR Drop and this week there are two! The second is from Hexware Studio with Mythic Defender – it does arrive on the worst date possible – where you battle mythological creatures by placing those all-important towers and then grabbing your trusty bow to ensure your kingdom remains safe.

Transformers VR Game Gets March Release Date On PSVR and PC

The previously-announced Transformers game, Beyond Reality, is coming to PSVR and PC VR next month.

After a short delay, the game touches down on both headsets on March 31. To celebrate the announcement, developer Meta4 Interactive released a short gameplay video of the title, which you can see below.

Transformers VR Release Date Confirmed

Meta4 describes Beyond Reality as a retro-inspired arcade shooter. In the game, you play as a human that teams up with Optimus Prime and the Autobots to take the fight to the Decepticons. The game’s campaign will take you through locations on both Earth and Cybertron.

Based on the video it looks like the game will be an on-rails experience in which players wield alien weaponry. Famous characters from the series run into battle alongside you, but it doesn’t look like you’ll be assuming the role of a Transformer yourself.

For now, there’s been no confirmation of a possible Quest version of the game, but we’ll let you know if that changes. The game’s being released in partnership with Hasbro, which is also bringing Nerf to VR with the help of Secret Location.

Hasbro Reveals Transformers Beyond Reality for PlayStation VR & Steam

Transformers Beyond Reality

Last week toy company Hasbro held its annual Pulse Con event online, and amongst all the announcements the company revealed a new Transformers virtual reality (VR) experience. Called Transformers Beyond Reality, the videogame will be coming to PlayStation VR and SteamVR headsets before the end of the year.

Transformers Beyond Reality

Described as: “A thrilling arcade-style first-person shooter VR game,” Transformers Beyond Reality likely won’t hold many surprises on the narrative front; you play an Autobot fighting the Decepticons to help save both Earth and Cybertron. So expect plenty of big guns and explosions.

Keeping with the original toy and cartoon designs rather than the revamped one from all the Michael Bay movies, Transformers Beyond Reality is being built by Meta4 Interactive. This is possibly why some of the footage shown feels a little familiar, that’s because the team previously worked on location-based entertainment (LBE) title Transformers: VR Battle Arena from 2019 and its follow up Transformers: VR Invasion.

Both of these were 4-player experiences whereas Transformers Beyond Reality looks to be a single-player adventure – although gameplay specifics have yet to be confirmed. What looks pretty definite from the brief gameplay shown is that Transformers Beyond Reality is going to be an on-rails shooter, as each clip showed the player character wandering down the middle of city streets, shooting enemies with one hand and being able to use a shield in the other.

Transformers Beyond Reality

Even with sparse details at least there isn’t long to wait. A Winter 2021 launch for PlayStation VR and SteamVR players has been confirmed, so you can be battling giant robots in time for Christmas.

Hasbro isn’t solely interested in bringing the Transformers franchise to VR. During the summer it revealed a collaboration with TOMY and Niantic Labs for an augmented reality (AR) title called Transformers: Heavy Metal. Another geo-location experience, players will be able to fight Decepticons in turn-based battles, either on their own or with friends.

Transformers Beyond Reality Coming To PSVR, SteamVR This Winter

Hasbro announced a new Transformers VR game this week, coming to PSVR and SteamVR headsets this winter.

The game, titled Transformers Beyond Reality, was announced at Hasbro Pulse Con, a virtual event featuring new announcements from the toy company. During the day one stream, Hasbro announced the title and gave an exclusive first look with an announcement trailer, which you can view embedded below. If the timestamp doesn’t work, the trailer begins at roughly at the 1:42:20 mark.

Hasbro says the game is being developed by Metaphor Interactive and will release for PSVR and SteamVR later this year. The plot sounds shockingly familiar — you will join the Autobots in a fight against the Deceptions to save Earth and Cybertron. What else is new? Beyond that, there’s surprisingly little info, except for some sparse Twitter and Facebook accounts associated with the game, which describe it as a “thrilling arcade-style first-person shooter VR game”.

This isn’t the first piece of Transformers VR media announced recently, but it is the first one available for home release — Transformers: VR Invasion is a location-based VR experience that will be available in the US, UK and Australia. The last we heard about that experience was last December, with a release date still not finalized.

Likewise, Hasbro also recently announced a new mobile AR game, Transformers: Heavy Metal, produced in partnership with Niantic. Heavy Metal is currently in soft launch, with a beta running in New Zealand and the Philippines. Beta roll-out to further regions has yet to be announced but you can register you interest by signing up on the game’s site.
