Keep Your PlayStation VR on While Checking Your Phone in anywhereVR

Gearing up for this year’s Tokyo Game Show (TGS), PlayStation showcased a multitude of various titles, and there were a few familiar PlayStation VR titles that we have seen before – all after the incredibly hyper-Japan montage that kicked it all off. One that hasn’t been seen before however was Anywhere VR, an application that lets you check through your phone in VR whilst putting your feet up and relaxing.

Created by Sony Music Entertainment, what Anywhere VR does is connect your smartphone to the PlayStation 4, where you can “enjoy your smartphone, Twitter, and mini games”. As shown in the preview video during the conference, your phone screen will be projected up in front of a relaxing scene, and users can control their phone as usual but there will be a real-time reaction to what they do.

The environments that users can enjoy range from classically pleasant nature scenes such as fields of flowers, waterfalls, and beaches, to atmospheric rooms where you can curl up in front of the fireplace.

As this is made by Sony Music Entertainment, there was a slight lack of focus on music except from the “pleasant background music” that will feature throughout. Whether or not it will be the classical music that was played throughout the video is not clear, only that you will be in an “audiovisual environment”.

This is, however, the first time users’ smartphones have been shown to be integrated with the PlayStation VR, so it will be interesting to see if this will be the only application to do so or if a trend will be set.

There is currently no release date set for anywhereVR, so make sure to check back with VRFocus for developments, as well as for all the news, updates, and features in the world of VR.

Voice-based Stealth Thriller Stifled Comes to Tokyo Game Show in VR

When experiencing a horror in virtual reality (VR), the usual way to go about it is to be terrified by what you can and can’t see, whether or not you are seen, and to shamelessly make sounds in reaction to what you’re being put through. During this year’s Tokyo Game Show there will be a different kind of horror game to experience that depends primarily on your voice and sound, Stifled, and there will be a VR version shown.

Stifled mimics the sounds that you make through your microphone input, developed by the Singapore-based studio Gattai Games, and what this does is unveils another world through what they call “echolocation”. As you can see in the trailers for the titles, there is a black and white setting that reacts just as it says, in a ripple effect according to your voice.

However, you need to make sure to remain hidden or else your voice will attract unwanted creatures who are also lurking in the dark alongside you without you knowing.

As this is a horror title, you can only imagine what this could uncover, and how your reactions could get you into some pretty horrific situations, and so this is why it is also called a thriller stealth title.

This will come as a VR version during the Tokyo Game Show 2016, but there isn’t too much info at this point as to which head-mounted display (HMD) is going to be used.

Space Channel 5 VR: Ukiuki Viewing Show to Feature at TGS 2016

Next week the annual Tokyo Game Show (TGS) will take place in Japan, set to feature eclectic mix of virtual reality (VR) experiences. The latest has been revealed by Sega and developer Grounding Inc with a VR project based on the popular Space Channel 5 videogame series, called Space Channel 5 VR: Ukiuki Viewing Show.

If you’ve not heard of Space Channel 5 before its a rhythm action title that players dance to. Details on the VR experience are a little light on detail currently, but it seems as if players won’t be doing any dancing. Instead visitors to the Linked Door booth at TGS 2016 will watch TV channel reporter Urara and her Ukiuki Viewing Show. The demo looks to support the HTC Vive head-mounted display (HMD) and should last approximately six minutes. There’s been no indication yet if Space Channel 5 VR: Ukiuki Viewing Show is likely to see a western release, or if its just a tech demo at this stage.

For those going to TGS 2016 there’s going to be plenty of VR technology to see. HMD manufacturer FOVE Inc. announced last week that it would be in attendance. For the show the company would be demoing its latest headset alongside three new videogames which showcase the devices eye tracking technology. They are Judgement, Functions and Project Falcon. The HTC Vive will be popping again thanks to a collaboration with Square Enix on Kai-ri-Sei Million Arthur VR, card-based brawler scheduled for release in Spring 2017.

D3 Publisher will also be taking its love simulation/adventure title Happy Manager to the event, supporting the PlayStation VR.

FOVE to Showcase 3 New Demos at Tokyo Game Show 2016

The Tokyo Game Show 2016 takes place in Japan in a couple of weeks time and today virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) manufacturer FOVE Inc. has announced it’ll be in attendance. The company will be showcasing its newly designed headset alongside three new titles that make use of its built in eye-tracking.

The three videogames at TGS 2016 will be Project Falcon, Judgement and Functions. Project Falcon is a first-person shooter (FPS) in which players manoeuvre using eye tracking as well as locking on to an enemy.

While Judgement is a story driven escape game where progress is made by what a player is looking at and focused on rather than given various options to choose from. Starting with the player being imprisoned there’s an interrogation to go through, and depending on what catches their eye a different ending awaits.

The final title Functions is a collection of mini games with FOVE’s latest eye tracking technology applied, such as controlling the character with eye movements or changing aspects of the environment by the opening and shutting the eye.

At the recent SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques Conference and Exhibition, FOVE revealed a redesign of its headset. The new design features a more lightweight construction, removing the solid side panels and replacing them with straps instead. This will help to reduce weight and size and also improve wearability and comfort whilst making the product more efficient to produce. TGS 2016 will see the introduction of a new colour variation as well, with the new HMD now sporting a black finish.

TGS 2016 will be taking place from 15th – 18th September at the Makuhari Messe, Tokyo, Japan, with the first two days dedicated to trade and industry professionals while the final to days will be open to the public.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of TGS 2016, reporting back with any further VR announcements.
