HoloLAB Champions

HoloLAB Champions

This isn’t the sort of title where you can go all mad scientist and create crazy concoctions – there’s Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-Ality for that – but it’s not meant to be. As a teaching tool it’s quite easy to see how VR has a place within education.” – Read VRFocus’ Senior Staff Writer Peter Graham review of HoloLAB Champions.

Travel Down The Time Tunnel To The Prehistoric Jungle In Time Carnage

Travelling through time to see what dinosaurs were really like holds a certain appeal, especially since its offers the chance to finally solve the ‘scales or feathers’ debate. Time Carnage is not particularly interested in academic pursuits, however. You are mostly here to shoot things.

Time Carnage puts the payer in the role of a time traveller, bouncing round through time putting down threats which the aid of a trusty armoury of weapons.

Time Carnage

Today’s VRFocus gameplay video goes all the way back to the days when dinosaurs ruled the earth – as such, they are not too pleased about you being on their turf. As such, huge deadly insects, fast raptors and big, plodding triceratops will crash through the trees towards you to be shot down.

Time Carnage is basically a wave shooter, though one which offers a regular change of scenery to switch things up a bit. You have four weapons available, which must be chosen before your start the level. Though you start out with only a hang gun and sub machine gun, lots more weapons are available to be unlocked as your progress, including some hidden weaponry.

Choosing your loadout is only half the story, though, weapons will only reload when they aren’t being held, so you need to quickly get used to the flow of grabbing and dropping weaponry as needed to let it recharge. There is also an energy shield which can protect you from attacks, but be armed, it only has a limited charge.

Time Carnage screenshot

Also worth looking out for is the Time Paradox, which if activated, slows time to a crawl, giving you extra space to take out that horde of dinosaurs and insects swarming your way. You can read the full review for Time Carnage here and the full gameplay video is available to view below.

The Inpatient

“The Inpatient looks set to offer an experience completely different to its predecessor Until Dawn – they’re both set in the same universe – a far more tactile tale, where exploring the story is much more key. It might be because of the hospital theme but playing the demo instantly feels very reminiscent of Wilson’s Heart for Oculus Rift and that’s no bad thing. Time Carnage Review: A Past I Want To Forget

Time Carnage Review: A Past I Want To Forget

Well, if you really have to make yet another wave shooter you might as well have some fun with it, right? On paper, Time Carnage seems to understand this; travel across space and time and kill exotic enemies in lands long forgotten. Incredibly, though, Wales Interactive’s latest fails to mine even a slither of fun out of its goofy b-movie concept.

Imagine revisiting, say, the Civil War-era with an uzi, or introducing yourself to the cavemen before blowing them up with a rocket launcher. Perhaps not the most progressive use of VR, no, but at least there’s the potential for an entertaining spin of history. Only two of Time Carnage’s four eras actually travel through the past and future, though. The first is a predictable trip back to the prehistoric-era to shoot down some dinosaurs, which is at least a bit better than it was in Ark Park, and the second sees you flung into the far future to do battle with robots.

Other than that there are several shootouts in what look like rejected Game of Thrones sets and, yes, a present-day wasteland to gun down zombies. In these more generic environments I found myself begging the game to speed up its excruciatingly slow enemies so that I might be spared a few minutes less of boredom (and I can’t help but suspect waves arrive so slowly simply to artificially pad out the running time). Time Carnage doesn’t even attempt to mask the fact it’s a by-the-numbers wave shooter arriving at a time the genre is so hopelessly oversaturated that most of us have worn out our shooting arms.

This is just Dimension Hunters without the imagination, Serious Sam with none of the charm, or Brookhaven Experiment devoid of scares. Worse yet, many of its weapons lack any sort of weight, often feeling like plastic toys. You’re meant to mix and match a set of four guns that you switch between whilst the others gradually reload, but I found it most effective to just select the most powerful weapon four times over and alternate depending on ammo rather than deploy any kind of strategy.

Weapons do at least unlock at a steady pace, giving you some semblance of an excuse to push on through the 16-mission campaign. Ramping up the difficulty is one way to salvage at least some form of intensity, though the game’s hard mode fluctuates between redundantly easy to near-impossible difficulty spikes in erratic fashion, as if it occasionally throws mood swings at you for not dying enough.

The same goes for the game’s visuals, which fluctuate between unbearably drab to surprisingly detailed. The zombie and robot environments don’t have a hint of character about them, though the jurassic jungles are dense and crisp. It’s a shame the brown color palette robs that area of any vibrancy, though.

Should you finish the campaign then you can head to a Challenge Mode for 10 more levels of pain or the arcade mode to keep up your scores. But chances are you’ll have seen enough of Time Carnage long before then.

Final Score: 4/10 – Disappointing

A painfully dull test of endurance, Time Carnage is as lifeless as VR wave shooters come. Even for an over-saturated genre, this is surprisingly devoid of invention; stand in place, shoot hordes of incoming attackers, unlock a new gun, do it all again. There is at least enough functional content to save the game from reaching Pixel Gear levels of travesty, but there are many, many other wave shooters you should play instead of this.

Time Carnage is avaialble now on PSVR, Rift, Vive and Windows for $19.99. Read our Game Review Guidelines for more information on how we arrived at this score.

Time Carnage: Hunde, wollt ihr ewig leben?

Time Carnage Oculus Rift

Time Carnage Oculus Rift

Kurze Wellen, langer Atem

Time Carnage Oculus Rift

Fazit

Time Carnage Oculus Rift

Competition: Win An EU Code For PlayStation VR’s Time Carnage

Time travel isn’t exactly devoid of risk. You travel from century to century, tipping your hat to Abraham Lincoln here and doffing your cap to William Shakespeare there. It’s all fun and games until someone loses a parent and finds they don’t exist anymore. Retconning history rarely seems to go well, and usually results in the future being messed up. Wales Interactive’s Time Carnage pits you with a simple philosophy: if you’re going to wander through history, for goodness sake bring a gun.

Time CarnageTime Carnage takes players through numerous time periods, having you fight against an array of different enemies. It’s a fast-paced action virtual reality (VR) videogame, and players will be able to select from a variety of weapons per time period in order to defend yourself in such a manner that best suits you. Players can dynamically swap out active guns in the middle of the action; but choosing the right load-out for each area is key as you traverse a post-apocalyptic wasteland, lush prehistoric jungle, futuristic city or icy tundra and fight against enemies such as dinosaurs, monsters, robots and zombies.

We’ve teamed up with Wales Interactive to give you the opportunity to win a code for the title on PlayStation VR.  We’ve got two to give away for the European region – so you’ll need a EU PlayStation account in order to claim and play them.  All you need to do to enter is use the Gleam widget below and interact with our social media accounts in some way. You’ll receive a draw entry for being a follower of us on Twitter, one (or another one) for being a subscriber to us on YouTube, or by visiting our Facebook page. We’ve now added our Instagram account to the mix and for a while if you visit it you’ll gain not one but two entries for the draw. And if you then follow the account while you’re there, that’d be pretty awesome of you.

Time CarnageThe competition is open for approximately a week. Starting today, April 7th, 2018, and will end at midnight UK time, the beginning of April 15th. Winners will be drawn and contacted after that period. Best of luck to all!

Future Proof, Not Bulletproof – VRFocus Takes Aim At The Zombie Horde In Time Carnage

Today’s VRFocus gameplay footage takes you through a swirly wormhole to travel through to the far future with Time Carnage, a sci-fi themed shooter that transports the player through various bits of time and space to take down hostile creatures.

Time Carnage puts the player in the role of a time traveller, charged with visiting various points throughout Earth’s history and destroying whatever dangerous creatures you may find there.

Time Carnage screenshot

The first level takes you to the distant year 3032, where a terrible nuclear was has driven most of humanity underground. In the ruins of an American town called Morganville, you will encounter the wretched remnants who were unable to reach safety, afflicted with a gnawing hunger for flesh – yours, to be precise.

Zombies are not the only threat, however, fast-moving four-legged creatures will also charge at you, looking like a cross between a dog and a naked mole rat. To defend yourself you have four weapon slots which you can equip with any of the guns you have unlocked. You also have a force shield, but enough hammering, and it will break, leaving you at the mercy of the monsters.

To begin with only the handgun and sub machine gun are unlocked, but others are made available as you play through the levels, including some hidden weapons that are scattered in various places. Any weapon not currently being held will reload automatically, so the gameplay becomes a case of tracking which weapon currently has to most ammo in it.

As you advance through, you will be taken to new environments, such as a pre-historic forest where you will encounter dinosaurs, or a high-tech futuristic city to fight rogue robots. Each enemy has slightly different behaviours and some need a specific weapon type to efficiently eliminate, so choosing the right weapon loadout is important.

Wales Interactive have been experimenting with VR development for some time, with their debut release, Infinity Runner, launching back in 2014 for Oculus Rift development kits. Time Carnage is the third VR title from the developer, following last year’s well received Don’t Knock Twice, which also saw a physical retail release via Perp Games.

Time Carnage is due to come to retail for Playstation VR on April 6th 2018, and then will be released digitally four days later on the 10th.

“We are proud to be bringing our second Wales Interactive title to market, in Time Carnage.” Declared Managing Director of Perp Games, Rob Edwards. “The team have a lot of exciting things going on and it is great to have such a close relationship.  With our retail experience, with their product quality, we have high hopes for our partnership.”

Dai Banner, Edwards’ opposite number at Wales Interactive added: “We’re thrilled to be working alongside Perp Games once again, this time on our first VR-exclusive title. In Time Carnage, we set out to create a challenging survival shooter with a panic-inducing game mechanic. The team had a lot of fun developing this for PlayStation VR and now we look forward to the digital and retail launch this April.”

Upon launch, players can choose to immerse themselves in the 16-tier Campaign Mode, or go for a more casual experience with the Custom Arcade Mode. A range of perks, challenges and mystery items are available for players to find and unlock as they travel through time shooting down foes.
