Review: Throw Anything

If in the highly unlikely event of a mad scientist deciding to bring the dead back to life in a bid to carry out his nefarious commands, what would your first reaction be? There have been enough books, films, TV shows and videogames for most people to have some semblance of an idea, turning their home into a fortress, hunting down the closest supplies or throwing everything out their apartment window. That last one is the premise behind recent PlayStation VR port Throw Anything.

Throw AnythingThe title originally arrived back in 2018 for PC VR headsets offering a quirky arcade experience with frantic gameplay. Throw Anything’s premise is simple enough, you find yourself trapped in a high-rise building and the zombies in this universe know how to climb – really well. So to stop yourself becoming dinner you have to knock the hordes off the building with whatever is available in the room.

Each room is themed, offering a different selection of items to lob at these brain-eating creatures, with some objects universal throughout; such as baseball bats. The first room is your average apartment so there are sofas, cupboards, a bed, TV and that sort of paraphernalia. The bigger items can then be smashed up so you’ve got more junk to throw – even the annoying inhabitant can be picked up and chucked out. They all have different weights as you might expect, helping to do a little or lots of damage. A book will only do slight damage while a bowling ball can take several zombies out.

The gameplay is designed to be outlandish and comical, breaking stuff, throwing it and then repeating the cycle. And it does get repetitious. So developer Visual Light does try to break things up with lots of additional things to do and look out for. Each level will have unique items such as the second area set in an office. A safe is locked with a combination which is delivered partway through. This can then be unlocked to find gold bars and bags of money which do some considerable damage.

Throw AnythingSpeaking of deliveries, the postman arrives regularly with new surprise parcels. These can contain basic items to throw or more advanced weaponry such as guns to really dole out the punishment. It can get rather hectic if you let too many zombies approach although some of these better weapons are best saved for the end of level boss fights. You can also head back to the hub area once you collected some cash to buy weapons for a particularly difficult stage.

So apart from a bit of repetition, it all sounds good. Well not quite. With the gameplay split between looking out a window and searching a room, there’s a lot of back and forth movement between these two portions. Fine on a PC VR headset with 360-degree roomscale coverage, less so with PlayStation VR’s single-camera system. Playing on a sofa as many might do is just nigh on infuriating as twisting a full 180 to access the whole room isn’t practical or comfortable after a while.

So switching to standing up could be an option for players helping make that continuous back and forth turning faster and smoother. Either way, both present a problem. PlayStation Move isn’t known for its pin-sharp tracking yet titles such as Blood & Truth highlight great control schemes. Throw Anything wants you to turn away from the camera which only does one thing, makes for very glitchy tracking and tricky item pickup. If there was a way to turn using any of the face buttons – aka snap rotation – that would’ve been a good workaround but there wasn’t an option anywhere to allow this.

Throw AnythingAs such a big part of the gameplay becomes a battle of patience with inanimate objects rather than the zombies themselves, which is a shame.

Throw Anything feels like a game show mini-game which has been extended way too much. It provides a decent amount of amusement for short periods but the gameplay mechanic soon loses its lustre and that’s not counting the other issues mentioned. It’s an idea that sounds great on paper for a VR experience with lots of interactive elements both in the core campaign and elsewhere yet the delivery falls flat.

Throw Anything to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse on PlayStation VR Next Week

Zombie videogames are still popular genre for developers to tap, with January seeing the release of The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners by Skydance Interactive. And February will continue that trend, albeit in a somewhat different form. After an initial Early Access release on Steam in 2018, followed by a fully finished version later that same year virtual reality (VR) developer Visual Light will soon be porting Throw Anything to PlayStation VR.

Throw Anything

Throw Anything is very much a light-hearted arcade videogame, where the action never lets up as you try to defend yourself from waves of hungry zombies. The gameplay hook is that you’re not on the ground trying to get headshots but instead stuck in a highrise building. Rather than being safe and secure, whiling away the apocalypse watching a bit of TV and relaxing on the sofa, these undead are more akin to those in World War Z, they know how to climb. Which means you need to stick your head out the window and knock the ravenous hordes off.

As the name of the title suggests this does mean using anything in the near vicinity as a weapon, lobbing it down and hopefully hitting one or more zombies in the process. This can be as simple as grabbing a guitar to throw or smashing up a sofa to use the parts, the environment is completely destructible. You’ll also find safes to unlock with gold bars inside or freezers filled with frozen food.

There are six stages to work through (one is new) with 5 mid-level bosses and 6 powerful “main” bosses to contend with. The PlayStation VR version also has several improvements to the PC VR version including a more intuitive reward system, rebalanced difficulty, a new item shop and improved graphics. An updated lobby allows you to take a break and throw some darts, shoot hoops and more.

Throw Anything

As well as the home version, the studio has signed deals with VR arcade chains VR Junkies in the US and Ctrl V in Canada to bring Throw Anything to locations nation wide.

Throw Anything will be available for PlayStation VR on Thursday, 6th February, retailing for $18.99 USD. Additionally, an Oculus store port is also in the works. For further updates from Visual Light, keep reading VRFocus.

Stuck in an Apartment During a Zombie Apocalypse, It’s Time to Throw Anything to Survive

You know the scenario. You’re chilling at home in your apartment binge watching Netflix when all of a sudden you find out the zombie apocalypse has erupted on the streets below. People are getting mangled and chewed up left and right creating hordes of ravenous, brain eating corpses. Do you go outside, hell no! Instead you look out the window and find these undead creatures scaling your building, all looking for an open window to clamber through and get their munch on. So it’s time to fight back with anything to hand, kettle, throw it, those old Creedence tapes you’ve been hoarding for some reason, time to let loose. And that’s the basic idea behind Visual Light’s new virtual reality (VR) title Throw Anything.

Launched this week on Steam Early Access for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality headsets, Throw Anything is a simply arcade style experience that involves you throwing all sorts of items at climbing zombies to knock them off the building.

Each level has its own particular traits, so the first is someones bedroom with furniture to fling, sports equipment, books, a radiator and loads more. You can even smash larger items up into small pieces so you’ve got more ammo. The majority of the level has your basic zombie type, so depending on how large or heavy the item is they should be knocked of in one or two hits. At the end of each level however there’s a boss so make sure you’ve left the best items to last.

As you can tell from VRFocus’ gameplay video this is sometimes easier said than done. Smaller items might just whistle past putting you in danger of being munched on. Larger items like a mattress are not only good for getting rid of one zombie, time it right and you’ll be able to take out multiples. There’s no score to speak of, just a limited amount of zombies to dispatch on each level plus the boss.

Throw Anything Stage5_1

If the video below looks fun you can always check out VRFocus’ preview of Throw Anything to find out what we thought of the early access title. For updates on Throw Anything, keep reading VRFocus.

Preview: Throw Anything – An Zombie Themed Time Waster

When it comes to zombie themed videogames developers have pretty much scrapped the barrel when it comes to ideas, with the undead featuring in virtually every genre imaginable. So when Visual Light announced its take, Throw Anything, it was difficult to imagine what the studio could do differently. Yet the team has, with a quirky wave-based experience that’s fun to play, although its longevity is something of concern.

Taking the pickup and throw comedy gameplay of titles like Job Simulator and Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-aility to the extreme, the entire videogame is set inside a succession of rooms in various tower blocks. Stood at the window during a zombie apocalypse, the aim of the game is to stop waves of zombies climbing up the outside of the building and into your room. If they do so then it’s game over.

To stop the zombies in their tracks and knock them to the ground, everyday objects are located inside each room. The first level starts you off in some dudes apartment, with all sorts of items to pick and lob. Depending on the actual size of an item it’ll do different amounts of damage. If you throw a book for example it’ll do a small amount of damage but the zombie will keep climbing. It’s either a case of chucking more books or finding something a bit weightier – a bowling ball works very effectively. Should the undead get too close items such as golf clubs and baseball bats then become particularly effective.

And there’s more to just picking stuff up. Quite a lot of the furniture is destructible plus you get regular postal deliveries which can contain useful items (guns) or useless items (a shoe). Plus latter levels have extra little treasures. The second level is set in an office which has a safe you need to crack to get the heavy gold bars out of, plus there’s a 3D printer which can give you some interesting goodies (bombs anyone?).

Throw Anything Stage5_1

With the cartoon graphics and frantic action the premise is fun for a while, getting more intense towards the end of each level when the boss appears and you’ve thrown all the best items away. Yet Throw Anything falls into the same trap that most wave shooters fall into, and that’s repetition, lots and lots of repetition. There may be different zombies to kill and lots of items to use, but at the end of the day you spend most of your time looking out a digital window.

The Early Access release includes five levels with a boss at the end of each. As development continues mid-level bosses are going to be added plus improved zombie AI, however it’s difficult to imagine that this will be enough to vary the gameplay. As is, Throw Anything comes across as a reasonably enjoyable time killer for those that want to spend 20-30 mins in VR.

Quirky Zombie Title Throw Anything Coming to Early Access This Week

Normally zombie themed videogames feature lots of guns, headshots and plenty of gore. Taking a different, more comical approach to dispatching hordes of the undead is Throw Anything, the first virtual reality (VR) experience from Visual Light.

Throw Anything Stage2_1

Taking a similar ‘hands-on’ approach to gameplay like Job Simulator, Throw Anything puts you in a bedroom in a high rise apartment building. For here you must defend yourself as zombies clumsily attempt to climb up by using anything that comes to hand.

Featuring a fully destructable environment, you can smash the furniture and use whatever parts you end up with as both offensive and defensive weapons. If worst comes to worst, it’s time to dispense with the pleasantries – and grab/toss the nearest NPC into harm’s way.

With five stages to play through, not only do you have to contend with normal zombies there are also four mid level bosses and five major bosses to contend with.

Throw Anything Stage5_1

Visual Light plans on being in Early Access for around four months. In that time the studio plans on adding new characters, smarter zombies, enhanced effects, new objects for each stage as well as varied spawn patterns.

The studio said in a statement: “We’ve been working on Throw Anything for the last few months and we feel it is ready to be shown to the world. However, we are still working to provide better services with new content. Thanks to early access, we will be releasing frequent updates tailored to the feedback received from the community. All the feedback will be reflected in each stage. Throw Anything needs your help to create an amazing new experience for players worldwide!”

Throw Anything will be available on Steam Early Access for HTC Vive this Wednesday, 28th February for $16.99 USD. PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality releases are due later this year. For further updates on Throw Anything, keep reading VRFocus.

Throw Anything Is A Different Kind Of Zombie VR Game

Throw Anything Is A Different Kind Of Zombie VR Game

We know, we know, yet another zombie VR game. But Throw Anything isn’t your typical undead-slaying experience.

In this new title launching in Early Access next week from Visual Light, players must indeed defend themselves from hordes of shuffling zombies. But, instead of arming yourself with machine guns and grenade launchers, Throw Anything asks you to do what it says on the tin. Zombies are climbing up the walls of your bedroom and you must gather any objects you can find in your house and them drop them on their heads.

It might not be the most revolutionary VR concept but, as the trailer above shows, the art style is actually very striking and the gameplay looks to have some Job Simulator-style fun to it. There are five stages to tackle with four mid-bosses and five main bosses.

Throw Anything will first be available on the HTC Vive for $16.99 with Oculus Rift and PSVR ports in the works later this year.
