Solaris Offworld Combat Will get a SteamVR Version

Solaris Offworld Combat

Just over a week ago, First Contact Entertainment released new details regarding its next first-person shooter (FPS), Solaris Offworld Combat. Since then the studio has also begun detailing further snippets such as the videogame featuring Aim controller support for PlayStation VR. The most recent sees the team confirm intentions to release a Steam version.

Solaris Offworld Combat

When Solaris Offworld Combat initially arrives in August it’ll only support Oculus Quest and Rift through the Oculus Store, followed by the PlayStation VR version at some point in 2020. There was never any mention of other headsets or platforms.

With Steam now confirmed to be part of First Contact Entertainment’s future plans this adds in the likelihood that Valve Index, HTC Vive/Vive Cosmos and Windows Mixed Reality headsets will gain support at some point in the future.

As a multiplayer, team-based shooter, Solaris Offworld Combat will live and breathe of its player community, so the more headsets it can support the better. Oculus Quest and PlayStation VR likely do have the biggest player bases, hence why they’re already confirmed. Even so, if you are an Oculus Rift owner who loves Steam, then at least you know it’s coming; when is another matter.

Solaris Offworld Combat

Set to offer a 4v4 arena-style sci-fi shooter, Solaris Offworld Combat will feature a core gameplay mode called ‘Control Point’. This entails teams having to work together to hold an area and win the match. Everyone starts with the same loadout, a Sentinel Disruptor pistol, then as they explore the arena they’ll be able to find an even more devastating array of weaponry which can include Grenade Launchers, Rocket Launchers, and Arc Rifles. There will be other pickups like health and shields, all of which appear as holograms from the floor.

Because of the mixture of locomotion controls, you’ll be able to slide along the floor in the heat of battle to grab new armaments on the fly. Solaris Offworld Combat will also include teleport locations known as Jump Points which can be used tactically to quickly traverse the arenas and flank opponents.

Solaris Offworld Combat will hit Oculus Quest and Rift on 27th August 2020. When a released date for the PlayStation VR version is released VRFocus will let you know.

Solaris: Offworld Combat Aim Controller Support Confirmed For PSVR

You’ve been asking and now we know for sure: yes, Solaris: Offworld Combat Aim controller support will be included in the PSVR version of the game.

A tweet from the game’s official Twitter account confirmed as much. The tweet reconfirms that the PSVR version of the game will launch later in 2020 and include support for Sony’s rifle-shaped controller. The Aim controller is a two-handed device that comes with a trigger, buttons and analog sticks for moving around in VR. We’ve seen it used in PSVR titles like Farpoint and Arizona Sunshine. The extra buttons often make it a much more immersive tool to play games with than the PlayStation Move controllers.

But arguably the most popular PSVR game with Aim controller support is Firewall: Zero Hour, which was developed by First Contact itself. It’s no surprise to see that the PSVR version of Solaris will offer Aim support, then.

That said, Solaris is a different beast to Firewall. True they’re both shooters but, whereas Firewall was a tactical game akin to Rainbow Six, Solaris is an arena-based game that reminds us more of Unreal Tournament. We debuted the first gameplay for the title running on Oculus Rift at the Upload VR Showcase: Summer Edition last week.

Solaris will first be touching down on Rift and Quest in August. A specific release month for PSVR hasn’t been confirmed but hopefully it won’t be too far behind. With Solaris Aim controller support confirmed, will you be checking out the game later this year? Let us know in the comments below!

Solaris Offworld Combat Hits Oculus Quest & Rift S in August, First Gameplay Trailer Released

Solaris Offworld Combat

First Contact Entertainment might have only released its popular first-person shooter (FPS) Firewall Zero Hour for PlayStation VR but its next title Solaris Offworld Combat will be very different. The studio has announced that it’ll be coming to Oculus Quest and Rift S first, whilst showcasing the first gameplay footage.

Solaris Offworld Combat

First teased back in October 2019, Solaris Offworld Combat is a team-based 4v4 arena-style multiplayer shooter. Set in the year 2150, there’s a narrative which images what VR esports could become in the future.

“You play as an elite, engineered VR athlete known as an Athlon. Much like the array of weapons at your disposal, you are a finely tuned, precision piece of future technology,” explains the synopsis. “Leaving the confines and limitations of Earth, future sports now take place in Holofields located in Offworld Arenas.

Solaris Offworld Combat is built around a singular gameplay mode ‘Control Point’, where teams have to work together to hold an area and win the match. Everyone starts a round with the same weapon, a Sentinel Disruptor pistol, with mode advanced weaponry found in the arenas. These can include Grenade Launchers, Rocket Launchers, and Arc Rifles. Plus there are Health, Armour, Mines, Shields, and other Utilities to pick up.

Solaris Offworld Combat

It’ll feature full locomotion controls as well as comfort options. Players will be able to sprint and slide maintaining the fast-paced action. There will also be teleport locations known as Jump Points which can be used tactically to traverse the arenas and flank enemies.

“Our vision for Solaris is for it to be an accessible game, but also one that can be played competitively against groups of friends,” says Damoun Shabestari, Game Director on Solaris Offworld Combat in a statement. “Players can expect dedicated servers at launch, followed by a stream of content updates to follow, such as customizable features in-game, like character skins and helmets, and squads!”

Solaris Offworld Combat will launch on Oculus Quest and Rift S on 27th August 2020 with the PlayStation VR version to follow at an unspecified date. For further updates from First Contact Entertainment on the videogame, keep reading VRFocus.

VR Arena Shooter ‘Solaris Offworld Combat’ Delayed to Late September

First Contact Entertainment, the studio behind the PSVR exclusive multiplayer shooter Firewall: Zero Hour (2018), has delayed the release of its upcoming VR arena shooter, Solaris Offworld Combat.

Update (August 14th, 2020): Solaris Offworld Combat has been delayed from its original August 27th release date to September 24th, launching on Oculus Rift and Quest.

The studio says a PSVR version is still planned for release sometime in 2020.

Original Article (June 17th, 2020): First Contact Entertainment cut its teeth in the VR multiplayer shooter space with Firewall: Zero Hour [our review], which is held as perhaps the best game in the genre on PSVR. So there’s reason to be excited for the studio’s upcoming title, Solaris Offworld Combat, which is a VR arena shooter designed for four vs. four multiplayer combat.

The game was announced a year ago this week, and today the studio has revealed the first gameplay footage and release date.

From the gameplay trailer, the thing that stands out the most is the game’s surprising pace. Most VR shooters are tactical and slow paced, partly because moving quickly in VR can be clunky and even dizzying. Solaris Offworld Combat is clearly aiming to up the ante on the speed of gameplay. Despite mechanics like sprinting and sliding, there’s indications that the studio is smartly designing for comfort.

For one, the player’s HUD appears to be designed to give players a ‘cockpit-like’ static frame of reference, which is a known technique for keeping players comfortable even while moving quickly. We can also see ‘speed lines’ in the player’s peripheral vision when moving especially fast, which has similar benefits for comfort during fast motion. Speed lines were used extensively in Sprint Vector (2018) [our review], which managed to remain quite comfortable despite its breakneck pace.

While the studio’s prior title, Firewall: Zero Hour, was a contemporary tactical shooter, Solaris is shaping up to be much more of a run-and-gun arena shooter, including weapon pickups, respawns, and territory-style objectives. The studio says the game will feature dedicated multiplayer servers.

The Solaris Offworld Combat release date is set for August 27th on Oculus Quest and Rift. Later this year the game will be released on PSVR as well. First Contact Entertainment hasn’t yet announced if Solaris will feature cross-play multiplayer or cross-buy between Oculus headsets, but we’ve reached out for more information.

Watch First Ever Solaris: Offworld Combat Gameplay Here

We’ve been following Solaris: Offworld Combat ever since we announced the game at our first-ever E3 Showcase last year. Now see the first-ever gameplay in this brand new reveal trailer we just debuted to open up our Summer Showcase!

The footage below is from the Oculus Rift version of the game:

In Solaris, players will engage in tense multiplayer PvP combat in virtual environments that look and feel like they’ve been ripped out of an esport from the future. In fact, that’s whole premise of the game. You take on the role of a futuristic cyber athlete that uses VR to compete in first-person shooter competitions, similar to Disc Battles from Tron, but with guns. It’s got a very meta atmosphere to it all.

This will be a very fast-paced experience with quick respawns, guns laying around arenas for quick picking up similar to old-school shooters like Quake and Unreal Tournament, and should be a great option for easy and quick pick-up and play action.

This isn’t First Contact Entertainment’s first forray into VR, though. Their first attempt was a visually striking wave shooter named ROM: Extraction for PC VR and then a squad-based tactical shooter named Firewall Zero Hour for PSVR. This makes Solaris their third VR game and first release for Oculus Quest.

Solaris: Offworld Combat is releasing this August 2020 for Oculus Rift via Home and Oculus Quest, with crossplay and dedicated servers. First Contact Entertainment is also planning to release Solaris later this year for PSVR, but there’s no date on that version yet.

It’s Multiplayer Mayhem for Perp Games’ Christmas AdVRent Calendar

Christmas is a time for coming together and helping others, it’s why VRFocus is happy to be part of Perp Games’ Combat AdVRent Calendar event this festive season. So not only are we helping put a smile on VR fans faces with a competition but also aiding UK charity Crisis which fights to end homelessness. If you’ve been following the campaign since 1st December, then you’ll know each day has a theme based around combat, and VRFocus’ is multiplayer gaming.

Final Assault

Perp Games originally held a similar calendar event last year, purely for the PlayStation VR titles it published. This year’s fun advent calendar event not only highlights entertaining virtual reality (VR) titles but also gives you a chance to win (most of) them.

It’s the 23rd December and with two days left to go until the big day, multiplayer videogames seemed particularly apt. So VRFocus has selected six titles with five of them available to win. Let’s start with military combat experience Onwarda videogame well known to a lot of VR players having also featured in Oculus’ VR League. A classic first-person shooter (FPS) developed by Downpour Interactive, VRFocus has both Steam and Oculus Store codes to give away.

Fire-Point Interactive’s Sabre VR for PlayStation VR is a very different beast. With a very bold cel-shaded art style, this is an arena FPS putting players inside mechanised animals called S.A.B.R.E.’s, offering cross-play functionality between VR and non-VR players.

Next up VR MOBA Cradle of Sins by British indie team U24 Solutions. Offering four playable characters and 28 weapons to select, Cadle of Sins isn’t yet available on Steam but the studio is currently running a $10k tournament which the competition codes will give you access to.

Solaris: Offworld Combat

If none of those are quite your thing, then how about winning real-time strategy (RTS) title Final Assault from Phaser Lock Interactive on Steam? VRFocus gave the videogame a commendable four-star review saying: “There’s plenty to love about Final Assault. Providing a leaner less complicated approach to RTS gameplay, most fans of the genre apart from the die-hard stalwarts should find there’s enough depth and reply value to keep coming back for hours on end.”

The last videogame you can win is Survios’ high seas action experience Battlewakeoffering a single-player campaign as well as multiplayer modes. Another decent entry from the developer, in Battlewake you captain a pirate vessel through hostile waters, using both magic and cannonballs to vanquish enemies.

The only title to make the list which isn’t winnable is Solaris: Offworld CombatThe next title from Firewall Zero Hour team First Contact Entertainment, Solaris: Offworld Combat promises 4 vs 4 battles in futuristic arena-style locations.

Battlewake

When it comes to supporting homeless charity Crisis its all part of Perp Games’ online store. Here the company sells all of its PlayStation VR hard copies, for those players who like to own a physical disk version. During December, Perp Games is donating 100% of the profits from each videogame sold to Crisis to help in its festive fundraising efforts.

In an additional competition, you can also win a PlayStation 4 Pro, PlayStation VR and videogame bundle care of Admix sponsoring the event.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of VR as the industry enters 2020, reporting back with all the latest announcements.

Disclosure: Admix is the parent company of VRFocus. VRFocus retains its editorial independence.

Firewall Zero Hour Dev Releases Teaser Trailer for New FPS Solaris: Offworld Combat

First Contact Entertainment has seen plenty of success with its first-person shooter (FPS) Firewall Zero Hour for PlayStation VR. Back in June, during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2019, the team released the first details on their next project Solaris: Offworld Combat. Last week the first teaser trailer arrived for the upcoming experience.

Solaris: Offworld Combat

Sticking to what the studio knows best, Solaris: Offworld Combat is another multiplayer shooter which will feature 4 vs 4 battles – no modes against bots – designed to be fast-paced in futuristic arena-style locations. As a purely online FPS matches will take place on dedicated servers rather than hosted by players which should provide a stable experience (Firewall Zero Hour has a recurring issue due to lack of dedicated servers).

Looking similar to virtual reality (VR) esports titles like Echo Arena by Ready at Dawn – just without the zero-g – the only gameplay mode revealed so far for Solaris: Offworld Combat is Control Point. Similar in function to King of the Hill modes, players have to control a location to earn points before it then moves, keeping players moving around the map.

As you can see in the released trailer there’s not a lot to go on as its cinematic rather than informative. But there are details to be gleaned from the footage. Like the weapons for example. Solaris: Offworld Combat doesn’t seem to feature any predetermined load-outs for players to experiment with. Instead, they’re supplied with pistols, to begin with, and will then have to collect other weapons during the match. These appear at specific spots in a level, and there’s no need to waste time standing in the open picking one up, it’s automatic when running over the location.

Solaris: Offworld Combat is being built for Oculus Rift and Oculus Quest with cross-play functionality, as well as PlayStation VR. The launch is currently scheduled for 2020 for all three devices.

Even with those few details Solaris: Offworld Combat is already looking promising as a sleek, no-holds-barred FPS. Firewall Zero Hour was one of VRFocus’ favourite shooters in 2018 receiving a five-star review. VRFocus will continue its coverage of Solaris: Offworld Combat, reporting back with further updates.
