Toronto-based Dark Slope is bringing its surreal VR experience, Scarygirl Mission Maybee, to Zero Latency locations across the globe. This will be one of the first VR experiences to launch on the second-generation of Zero Latency’s platform using HP’s Microsoft VR headsets and tracking systems.

Scarygirl is developed from the ground-up with VR in mind and, despite the ominous name, is actually designed for all ages in a large-scale multiplayer free-roam environment. The experience is based on the cult hit graphic novel, Scarygirl, by artist Nathan Jurevicius, for up to eight players. A video game based on the property was also released back in 2012 for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

It’s a collaborative experience that requires players to work together and “suck up” hazardous goo and fight back hordes of nasty creatures.

Notably, this is the first third-party piece of content that Zero Latency will feature at its locations. Up until now, all of the content on offer had been developed in-house by Zero Latency directly — such as zombie shooter Outbreak Origins and competitive PvP shooter Sol Raiders. Scarygirl will debut at all Zero Latency locations that support the second-generation Microsoft-powered tracking platform.

In addition to working with Zero Latency, Dark Slope, the creators of Scarygirl, recently emerged from stealth to announce a seed funding round of over $1.5 million to aid in development of additional free-roam VR experiences. The company has a 3,000 square-foot motion capture stage in its Toronto-based studio.

Dark Slope’s Scarygirl Mission Maybee is Coming to Zero Latency

Earlier last month location-based entertainment (LBE) specialist Dark Slope left stealth and announced its debut virtual reality (VR) title Scarygirl Mission Maybee. Today, the studio has revealed a collaboration with Zero Latency to bring the experience to all of its free-roaming VR locations worldwide.

Based on the cult hit graphic novel and designer toy brand Scarygirl from acclaimed artist Nathan Jurevicius, Scarygirl Mission Maybee is a first-person shooter (FPS) designed for up to eight people. They need to work together to suck up infectious hazardous goo and blast a purified antidote back at the hordes of infected creatures swarming the neon-rich virtual world.

Scarygirl Mission Maybee will be one of the first videogames to be distributed via Zero Latency’s second-generation platform developed in tandem with technology giants Microsoft, HP, and Intel.

“Zero Latency’s next-generation VR platform is shaping up to be an incredible next step in LBE VR, making it the perfect partner to help distribute our debut title, Scarygirl Mission Maybee,” said CJ Hervey president and co-founder at Dark Slope in a statement. “The world of Scarygirl is magical, immersive, and exciting to audiences of all ages, there is no better way to experience it than in warehouse scale VR.”

Alongside leaving stealth and releasing Scarygirl Mission Maybe, Dark Slope revealed it managed to close a seed funding round securing over $1.5 million. Founded in January 2018, over the past 12 months Dark Slope has managed to complete a $1.5 million seed funding round which has helped it build Scarygirl Mission Maybee, hire new staff, develop the company’s free roam technology and its enterprise product line, and will help to support future VR and AR releases. Additionally, as part of the seed round the company has appointed new investor Steven DeNure, co-founder and former President/COO of DHX Media, to the board of Dark Slope.

“Technological advancements have put location-based VR and AR applications, tools and experiences at the cusp of widespread adoption by consumers and corporations,” said Raja Khanna, Executive Chairman and co-founder of Dark Slope in a statement. “The timing is right, and the team at Dark Slope are the best of the best.
