Oculus Quest Features Multi-Room Guardian and Arena-Scale Tracking Using Oculus Insight

While the announcement of Oculus Quest was certainly eye catching, with the standalone headset set to launch in Spring 2019 for $399 USD, it was the tech making it all possible that made it all the more impressive. That technology was Oculus Insight, the inside-out tracking solution which sets it apart for Oculus Rift and Oculus Go.

Oculus Insight

Oculus Insight uses four ultra wide-angle external sensors and computer vision algorithms to track and map the area in real time whilst also tracking the Oculus Touch controllers. The technology looks for edges, corners, and any other distinct feature in the environment to generate a point map of the users location, creating an estimate every millisecond of where their head is.

And thanks to the way Oculus Insight works it means that Oculus Quest has ‘arena-scale’ tracking, allowing for gameplay in much larger environments than at home. During Oculus Connect 5 this week this function is being put to the test in a 4,000 sq ft arena with guests able to play Dead & Buried Arena.

All this tracking also works for co-location multiplayer, as Oculus explains: “Oculus Insight can build and store a “spatial map” of any environment. It can retrieve this map and use camera data to “see” where it’s located. In the current demo, we created a master map of the entire space and made the map accessible to multiple devices in the same room over the network. That way, the devices know where they are in relation to one another, allowing them to co-locate each other.

Oculus Quest - Front

The system also employs Oculus Rift’s Guardian tech, which stops users walking into walls, or punching furniture, bringing up a virtual wall to notify them. Naturally this has been taken further to offer a ‘Multi-Room Guardian’ which remembers the layout of rooms for quick and easy use when taking round a friends then coming back home. What Oculus hasn’t quite detailed is how the scanning works, whether its completely automatic or if its manually operated.

How well this all works is another matter. With four sensors the controller tracking should be better than rivals Vive Focus and Lenovo Mirage Solo which only use two forward facing cameras. When VRFocus finds out we’ll let you know.

What’s Stormland Like to Play? Check Out This new Gameplay Video from OC5

During the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2018 in June Insomniac Games revealed the first details of its next virtual reality (VR) adventure, an epic sci-fi tale involving robots called Stormland. Now, with Oculus Connect 5 underway the studio has been letting attendees get the first taste of what’s to come. Naturally VRFocus was at the front of the queue and we’ve got some gameplay footage to show you.

Stormland

Created in collaboration with Oculus Studios, Stormland is an open world action‐adventure putting you in the role of a robot who just happens to be a gardener on a lush alien planet. That was until The Tempest shattered your android body, so you must head out across the planet to augment yourself and save your friends.

Insomniac Games has built an expansive world to explore, with your robot body able to freely navigate it by bounding up cliffs, gliding across chasms or flying through slipstreams. Additionally, you’ll also be able to detonate explosives, harness electricity, and wield makeshift weapons to face hostiles. But to do all this you’ll need to upgrade your body by collecting specific alloys found around the environment. These can then be used to buy the upgrades you’ll need to progress at certain locations.

All of this can be seen in VRFocus’ gameplay video below, as we run through the verdant landscape learning how to shoot, glide and find the resources necessary to survive.

Stormland

This is only a short gameplay glimpse at what’s to come – Insomniac didn’t want us revealing too much – with Stormland  exclusively launching on Oculus Rift at some point in 2019. From current impressions the sci-fi adventure is looking to be one of the most anticipated VR titles for next year.

VRFocus is at Oculus Connect 5 for the duration, continuing to bring you the latest news and announcements from the event.

Oculus’ Nate Mitchell Reveals What’s Happening at Oculus Connect 5

It’s that time of the year when Oculus grabs all of the virtual reality (VR) attention with its fifth annual event, Oculus Connect 5 (OC5), taking place in California over the next couple of days. Of course VRFocus is there to bring you all the latest news and announcements from the conference so we caught up with the head of Oculus Rift team Nate Mitchell to find out more.

Nate Mitchell Header

Being the consumer focused event that OC5 tends to be there are plenty of videogame announcements from some of the biggest developers in the field, with the likes of Insomniac Games showcasing its upcoming sci-fi adventure Stormland,  Phaser Lock Interactive with Final Assault and Ready at Dawn with Lone Echo II and Echo Combat.

While 2018 has certainly been a big year for Oculus with the launch of Oculus Go back in May, Mitchell predicts an even bigger year ahead saying: “2019 is going to be the year of some of the best content that we’ve seen to date. And I think that’s showcased here [OC5], but it’s the development community taking everything to the next level. And so if you’re a gamer there’s never been a better time to jump into VR.”

Alongside all the videogames to play over the two days there will be plenty of talks and sessions for guests to attend, teaching developers the latest VR practices, and how to make awesome immersive content for Oculus Rift.

Oculus Rift & Touch

Check out the video below to see learn more about what Mitchell has to say regarding the VR industry, not only just for home users but also for the industry at large, whether that’s training and simulation or location-based entertainment (LBE) which has been rapidly growing over the past couple of years thanks to companies like The VOID and its Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire experience or Zero Latency and its territory expansion.

VRFocus will be bringing you the latest hands-on from OC5 so stay here for further updates.

Arena Multiplayer Echo Combat Receives Official Launch Date

The last few months have seen Ready at Dawn hold several beta weekends for its upcoming multiplayer Echo Combat. The third title in the series after Lone Echo and Echo Arena, today at Oculus Connect 5 the studio has unveiled a new map, gameplay mode, the next beta and when Echo Combat’s official launch date.

Echo Combat

Firstly the new content. Ready at Dawn is releasing a new map, Combustion, featuring a new mode, Capture Point. Instead of a moving objective this time two teams of three players will fight to capture a central point on the map. Once captured the team can move freely throughout the map and the point will remain in their control. While they now have the freedom to attack the enemy team the point holders need to make sure they don’t lose it. Each match is best of three rounds, first team to win two rounds wins the match.

The new mode and map will be available to test in Echo Combat’s latest open beta which begins today. It’ll run through until this Sunday, 29th September. As with the previous beta’s signing up and participation is free, all you need to do is download Echo VR from the Oculus Store.

Lastly is the official release date which isn’t too far away. Echo Combat will launch on 15th November featuring both the
Combustion Capture Point map and the Fission Payload map. Ready at Dawn have also teased that additional content will be available for the November release.

Echo Combat

While the beta is free to join the final product won’t be, with Ready at Dawn pricing Echo Combat at $9.99 USD.

Earlier this month the studio began its fourth beta weekend which saw the Echo Combat Party patch. This allowed players to form parties with their mates for the first time. As further details on Echo Combat are released VRFocus will let you know.

Phaser Lock Interactive Showcase New Final Assault Footage at Oculus Connect 5

After revealing its Final Approach sequel Final Assault earlier this year developer Phaser Lock Interactive has stayed relatively quiet on its progress. That’s now changed today with a new gameplay trailer being shown during Oculus Connect 5. Additionally, the studio has revealed a rough launch window.

Final Assault

Like its predecessor, Final Assault is a fast paced real-time strategy (RTS) title with players having to manage both aerial and ground based personnel. This time though it’s war, themed around World War 2 players have direct control over where their troops go and who they attack. Final Assault may require careful use of the resources available but commanders don’t need to worry about base-building or resource gathering.

The new gameplay trailer showcases a battle in what looks like a European town in Winter. There’s plenty going on with both troops, tanks and fixed emplacement’s to deal with alongside all the planes whizzing around. As part of this is the new PvP mode where Allied and Axis forces take on one another, with mates vying to see whose tactics work best.

VRFocus previously previewed Final Assault, finding that: “Phaser Lock Interactive has designed Final Assault to walk a fine line between deeply tactical RTS and newcomers to both the genre and VR.”

Final Assault

Final Assault will support not only Oculus Rift but HTC Vive and PlayStation VR as well. Currently, Phaser Lock Interactive expects to launch the title by the end of the year. When further details are released VRFocus will keep you informed.

Defector’s Going to India in This new OC5 Gameplay Trailer

Having released the rather creepy horror experience Wilson’s Heart for Oculus Rift in 2017, developer Twisted Pixel in conjunction with Oculus Studios set its sight on a completely different adventure, one involving spy’s, guns and action,  Defector. After the first details were released earlier this year involving an epic mid-air plane sequence, Twisted Pixel now takes you to India with a new gameplay video from Oculus Connect 5 (OC5).

DEFECTOR OC5

The first trailer may have been attention grabbing with cars flying into planes and so on, but this new India level is equally impressive, showcasing more guns, new equipment, leaps between buildings and even a little gambling.

Set in a far richer and more dynamic looking environment of a big Indian city, you’ll be able to wager on several different games from dice to cards. That’s only the start on it, with some flashy looking tech attached to your forearms which seem to control fighters in a ring. Then there’s the weaponry, from a gun that quite literally looks electrifying to gauntlets that give you superhuman abilities – catching rockets with your hands or punching enemies into the sunset.

From these trailers Defector certainly looks like it’ll feature plenty of set pieces, making use of the Oculus Rift and Touch hardware for maximum immersive effect. How much freedom Twisted Pixel will give you is another matter.

DEFECTOR OC5

Explaining the India mission in more detail the developer comments: “Your next mission leads you to India to infiltrate a mysterious fighting tournament and meet the mastermind behind the operation. You must raise the stakes to gain knowledge and influence those who may assist you before choosing your path: chase a defected rogue agent through the city and across rooftops before he makes his escape, or pursue a dangerous criminal and outwit his armed forces with advanced weaponry.”

Originally, Twisted Pixel had stated at late 2018 release for Defector. That’s no longer the case with a 2019 now listed, continuing to add to what could be a very interesting year for Oculus Rift owners with the likes of Stormland also due next year.

Check out the new India trailer for Defector below. As VRFocus is at Oculus Connect 5 for both days keep an eye out for our hands-on impressions from the event, bringing you the latest Oculus Rift news and updates.

YouTube VR Comes to Oculus Go

Though the newly announced Oculus Quest might be grabbing all the headlines at the Oculus Connect 5 conference, the Oculus Go has not been left out. Oculus and Facebook staff were keen to advertise the Oculus Go as one of the most affordable ways to get involved in virtual reality (VR). One of the ways that many Oculus Go users choose to experience VR content is by watching films and TV through the headset, and now a new avenue for finding great content has opened up with the announcement that YouTube VR is coming to Oculus Go.

As Oculus Connect 5 it was revealed that 80% of Oculus Go owners were new to the Oculus ecosystem, meaning that they did not previously own a Samsung Gear VR or Oculus Rift. Many were entirely new to VR. Oculus personnel were excited about how the device allowed VR to come to a new audience.

While previously Oculus Go users could watch a variety of content from Oculus TV or apps such as Netflix, Hulu and Pluto TV, one of the biggest repositories of videos on the internet is YouTube. As such, Oculus Go owners will be interested to learn that YouTube VR will be coming to the headset, providing Oculus Go users will access to over 800 VR videos covering a wide variety of subjects.

Using YouTube VR, Oculus Go users can set themselves up in a virtual movie theatre or comfy living room to take in various VR videos, including nature documentaries and 360-degree concert videos.

Oculus have been keen to promote the Oculus Go as a way to take in live events as well, introducing Oculus Venues for this purpose earlier this year. Oculus Venues lets Oculus Go users take in live events such as concerts or sporting events from the best seat in the house and Oculus have promised there will be more top-quality content coming to Oculus Venues over the Autumn.
