MyndVR Collaborates With Pico and Littlstar Helping Seniors Combat Social Isolation

For younger generations, the coronavirus lockdown may simply mean being a bit bored at home after binge-watching another Netflix series but for seniors, it can be a lot more daunting. Which is why MyndVR, a health and wellness company for senior citizens, has announced a collaboration with Pico Interactive and Littlstar to help senior care communities across the US combat social isolation.

Civitas Senior Living MyndVR

The spread of COVID-19 has meant many senior living facilities have had to stop friends and family visiting, only allowing key medical personnel inside as those over the age of 60 are more at risk. The knock-on effect of isolation is that this can also have a detrimental effect on seniors health and well-being.

Which is why the three companies have come together to provide senior care communities with a free headset along with training and support. They’ll also get a one-year subscription to the MyndVR network where they can access senior-friendly content.

“We are so grateful to Pico Interactive and Littlstar for teaming up with us to donate this amazing, life-enriching program to seniors in care communities across the country,” said Chris Brickler, CEO of MyndVR in a statement. “It’s important that the AR/VR industry steps up in this isolation crisis, and we plan to deliver MyndVR to communities in need in all 50 states.”

MyndVR - Pico“We are thankful to have this opportunity to partner with MyndVR to deliver 360-degree, immersive VR content directly to seniors across the country who are currently facing social isolation because of Covid-19,” said Littlstar co-founder and CEO Tony Mugavero. “The opportunity to expand the world virtually can bring so much happiness and comfort.”

To ensure hygiene guidelines are kept to part of the training MyndVR provides is how to properly sanitize each headset between uses, via print instructions and video tutorials. The company also supplies alcohol wipes to ensure each location has the necessary equipment.

“We are excited to be part of this initiative, to deploy our headsets to seniors across the country who are dealing with the effects of social isolation,” said Will Winston, Western Sales & Partnerships Director. “Our simple and easy-to-use design makes our hardware some the most durable and sanitizable solutions for virtual reality headsets on the market.”

Those senior care communities interested in finding out more can apply here. MyndVR has also created a GoFundMe page  for anyone interested in contributing and expanding the 50-community donation. For further updates, keep reading VRFocus.

MyndVR Rolls Out Improved VR For The Elderly On Vive Focus Headsets

MyndVR Rolls Out Improved VR For The Elderly On Vive Focus Headsets

Nearly two years ago to the day we first wrote about MyndVR. It’s a VR platform designed for use by elderly people, giving them a raft of content to enjoy, like a Frank Sinatra tribute show. This week, though, MyndVR is expanding its mission with the help of HTC.

The company is now rolling out MyndVR 2.0 in partnership with HTC’s Vive X accelerator. The company joined the initiative back in January. Whereas previous versions of MyndVR were used on mobile-based headsets, this latest edition runs on HTC’s standalone VR kit, Vive Focus. The device is Mynd-branded and comes with a tablet that can control VR experiences, for the user by carers.

Excited to share our Mynd VR 2.0 video story!

Posted by Mynd VR on Monday, 15 April 2019

MyndVR mainly consists of 360 video content, so it won’t take advantage of Vive Focus’ positional tracking. Using a standalone device rather than a headset that requires a smartphone is, however, much more convenient.

“The ease-of-use with HTC Vive’s Focus enhances the user-experience and helps provide a world of immersive content for seniors who are no longer able to physically travel,” co-founder Chris Brickler said in a prepared statement. “We are lifting the spirits of our elders and taking them far from the four walls of their care communities.”

It’s a curated platform, one that its founders envision as a sort of Netflix of VR content for a certain demographic. MyndVR doesn’t make this content itself but instead partners with the likes of Disney to purpose existing 360 degree content for the platform.

The platform is already up and running in 20 states across the US as well as Canada. You can head to an official website to learn more.

MyndVR 2.0 and HTC Vive Focus Bring VR to Senior Citizens

Consumer virtual reality (VR) is suitable for all age ranges, from the young to the old, yet senior citizens may struggle to learn about the technology and accessing the right content. Which is where MyndVR comes in, helping provide solutions for senior care communities. The company has just announced the launch of MyndVR 2.0, which has been helped by a partnership with HTC’s VIVE X accelerator.

Civitas Senior Living MyndVR

MyndVR looks to provide VR experiences to seniors revolving around meaningful content with a purpose. The company’s library of content spans travel, music, art, nature and reminiscence therapies through a strategic partnership with Littlstar. Then there’s MyndVR Studios which is creating content in-house for specific age-related conditions.

“Our goal is to lift the quality of life and the spirits of the senior citizens across the country,” said Chris Brickler, co-founder and CEO of MyndVR in a statement. “We have the ability to bring in a super-engaging technology to these folks – more engaging than TV, more engaging than newspapers. This is a true immersive technology that provides joy and takes people out of the four walls of their existence.”

MyndVR was selected to be part of HTC Vive X’s fourth batch of companies in 2018. Thanks to that, MyndVR is deploying branded HTC Vive Focus headsets to provide easy-to-use, all-in-one immersive experiences for seniors, with care partners controlling the experience via a tablet.

HTC Vive Focus Plus“At Vive we believe in VR’s potential to reshape humanity for the better using emerging technology and we’re excited to work with MyndVR to bring virtual reality content to improve the lives of senior populations,” said Cher Wang, Chairwoman and CEO of HTC. “Through these positive and life-like experiences, with the help of Vive Focus, virtual reality is improving the quality of life for these individuals and we’re proud to be a part of this life-changing initiative.”

Currently, MyndVR 2.0 is deployed across more than 20 states in the US with the platform also available to care partners worldwide. As MyndVR continues to expand and improve its platform for seniors, VRFocus will keep you updated.

Civitas Senior Living

Chris Brickler, co-founder and CEO of MyndVR, said, “We recently completed a large-scale national pilot with several hundred people in senior living communities, including those living independently and those with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s and other age-related conditions. We observed mood improvement, reductions in feelings of isolation, triggering of memories, an increased sense of connection, and lifted spirits among participants. We understand what content works specifically for seniors, and that the aging mind wants to continue to learn, create and explore. The technology holds tremendous therapeutic promise, and our goal is to give seniors across the country access to an affordable VR solution.”

residents of Midtowne Assisted Living and Memory Care are introduced to MyndVR, they will be able to continue experience new adventures daily from the comfort of their chairs all while maintaining the benefits that come from VR. It is possible that with continued work, the project and it’s available content could be rolled out to more locations in the future. VRFocus will be sure to bring you all the latest.

MyndVR and Littlstar Collaborate on VR Content for Users 55+

Virtual reality (VR) tends to be seen as a technology for the younger generation with most market research companies putting the biggest demographic of users in their 20s and 40s. That’s not to say that VR can’t be used by all ages, in fact  global content network Littlstar has just entered into a partnership with MyndVR, a specialist in VR solutions for senior living communities, to help deliver immersive content to older adults.

MyndVR Rona Barrett

MyndVR powered by Littlstar will provide seniors with access to immersive experiences from the top content producers in the world, including DiscoveryVR, National Geographic, USA Today Network, and The Wall Street Journal. The goal being to provide a unique blend of licensed and original content designed to improve the lives and cognitive outcomes of adults 55 and over.

“Through this partnership, we have access to amazing and highly relevant VR experiences in the Littlstar app, which allows us to ensure that seniors can easily participate in these experiences through a seamless streaming platform,” said Chris Brickler, co-founder and CEO of MyndVR in a statement. “We recently completed a large-scale national pilot with several hundred people in senior living communities, including those living independently and those with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s and other age-related conditions. We witnessed firsthand what content works specifically for seniors, and we understand that the aging mind wants to continue to learn, create and explore. The technology holds tremendous therapeutic promise, and our goal is to give seniors across the country access to an affordable VR solution.”

VR for Good: MyndVR Wants To Make The Ultimate Platform To Help The Elderly

VR for Good: MyndVR Wants To Make The Ultimate Platform To Help The Elderly

A few years ago director Michael Rossato-Bennett and Music and Memory’s Dan Cohen started to explore the effects music had on people with Alzheimer’s disease. As documented in 2014’s Alive Inside, they began to see patients become more expressive and joyful through use of this long-established medium.

MyndVR co-founder Chris Brickler was particularly struck by the documentary. “I got to thinking,” he says, “Wow, virtual reality could do that at an order of magnitude.”

Brickler and co-founder Shawn Wiora are now trying to do just that.

Though still in its early stages, MyndVR has big ambitions. Brickler, who has previously worked for Verizon and British Telecomm, sees these beginnings turning into a Netflix-like service of medical grade experiences that will help elderly people with various conditions. Imagine different content that could elicit more emotions, or help calm you in times of need, or even let you see more clearly.

“I think one of the things that was interesting to me about VR was not trying to satisfy the twenty three year old gamer,” Brickler tells me over the phone. “We would actually try to create a healing health care solution with this technology that would actually serve the good of all of humankind.”

But there’s a long way to go before MyndVR gets to that stage, and Brickler is very aware of that. He’s quick to point out that the early experiments the company is undertaking are not in any way medically official, but it’s partnering with other organizations to try and get some tangible results in the near future.

“It’s very difficult to measure that,” he explains. “But we are now you know going into clinical trials that we’re going to measure but the main thing we knew was that this would bring smiles on faces as well.”

On a purely observational level, though, MyndVR seems promising. So far the company has teamed with students at the University of Texas at Dallas campus to create several kinds of experiences. One is a 360-degree video of a Frank Sinatra tribute show. “I brought in 30 actors into this thing and recreated a nighttime environment where these people really are immersed into the idea that you’re sitting on a table and someone’s performing your favorite songs,” Brickler explains.

It’s experiences like that that are pushing Brickler and Wiora to create more and more content. They want a platform where people can choose from a range of different experiences that will genuinely aid their loved ones. They also have some incredibly unique ideas for the future, like virtual home environments where picture frames might showcase past photos, and TV sets will show them videos of loved ones and past memories.

The hope is that these kinds of experiences will enable neuroplasticity. “Neuroplasticity is basically the idea of your brain regenerating past neural pathways that have been dormant and used and exercised.” Brickler explains.

MyndVR is the kind of company we want to hear a lot more from going forward. As the elderly population in the entire world continues to grow, demand for these kind of experiences could grow exponentially.

“You know it’s just a betterment of life,” Brickler says. It’s hard to argue with that.
