MyndVR Collaborates With Pico and Littlstar Helping Seniors Combat Social Isolation

For younger generations, the coronavirus lockdown may simply mean being a bit bored at home after binge-watching another Netflix series but for seniors, it can be a lot more daunting. Which is why MyndVR, a health and wellness company for senior citizens, has announced a collaboration with Pico Interactive and Littlstar to help senior care communities across the US combat social isolation.

Civitas Senior Living MyndVR

The spread of COVID-19 has meant many senior living facilities have had to stop friends and family visiting, only allowing key medical personnel inside as those over the age of 60 are more at risk. The knock-on effect of isolation is that this can also have a detrimental effect on seniors health and well-being.

Which is why the three companies have come together to provide senior care communities with a free headset along with training and support. They’ll also get a one-year subscription to the MyndVR network where they can access senior-friendly content.

“We are so grateful to Pico Interactive and Littlstar for teaming up with us to donate this amazing, life-enriching program to seniors in care communities across the country,” said Chris Brickler, CEO of MyndVR in a statement. “It’s important that the AR/VR industry steps up in this isolation crisis, and we plan to deliver MyndVR to communities in need in all 50 states.”

MyndVR - Pico“We are thankful to have this opportunity to partner with MyndVR to deliver 360-degree, immersive VR content directly to seniors across the country who are currently facing social isolation because of Covid-19,” said Littlstar co-founder and CEO Tony Mugavero. “The opportunity to expand the world virtually can bring so much happiness and comfort.”

To ensure hygiene guidelines are kept to part of the training MyndVR provides is how to properly sanitize each headset between uses, via print instructions and video tutorials. The company also supplies alcohol wipes to ensure each location has the necessary equipment.

“We are excited to be part of this initiative, to deploy our headsets to seniors across the country who are dealing with the effects of social isolation,” said Will Winston, Western Sales & Partnerships Director. “Our simple and easy-to-use design makes our hardware some the most durable and sanitizable solutions for virtual reality headsets on the market.”

Those senior care communities interested in finding out more can apply here. MyndVR has also created a GoFundMe page  for anyone interested in contributing and expanding the 50-community donation. For further updates, keep reading VRFocus.

MyndVR and Littlstar Collaborate on VR Content for Users 55+

Virtual reality (VR) tends to be seen as a technology for the younger generation with most market research companies putting the biggest demographic of users in their 20s and 40s. That’s not to say that VR can’t be used by all ages, in fact  global content network Littlstar has just entered into a partnership with MyndVR, a specialist in VR solutions for senior living communities, to help deliver immersive content to older adults.

MyndVR Rona Barrett

MyndVR powered by Littlstar will provide seniors with access to immersive experiences from the top content producers in the world, including DiscoveryVR, National Geographic, USA Today Network, and The Wall Street Journal. The goal being to provide a unique blend of licensed and original content designed to improve the lives and cognitive outcomes of adults 55 and over.

“Through this partnership, we have access to amazing and highly relevant VR experiences in the Littlstar app, which allows us to ensure that seniors can easily participate in these experiences through a seamless streaming platform,” said Chris Brickler, co-founder and CEO of MyndVR in a statement. “We recently completed a large-scale national pilot with several hundred people in senior living communities, including those living independently and those with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s and other age-related conditions. We witnessed firsthand what content works specifically for seniors, and we understand that the aging mind wants to continue to learn, create and explore. The technology holds tremendous therapeutic promise, and our goal is to give seniors across the country access to an affordable VR solution.”

“We couldn’t be more thrilled about our partnership with MyndVR, and see a huge opportunity to bring immersive content into health care to improve people’s lives. By working with MyndVR, we can use our best in class technology and substantial library of content to reach a new audience that may have otherwise not been able to have these experiences,” said Tony Mugavero, founder and CEO of Littlstar. “Any senior living or health care facilities not using VR today are missing a huge opportunity.”

Additionally, MyndVR is also developing interactive cognitive exercises alongside the licensed and original content. For any further updates from MyndVR, keep reading VRFocus.

3D and 180-Degree Videos Get PSVR Support From Littlstar

3D and 180-Degree Videos Get PSVR Support From Littlstar

Littlstar appears to be the first app for PlayStation 4 to allow access to USB drives with support for a wide range of VR videos including 3D and 180-degree content.

The feature should arrive in the next update to the Littlstar app on PS4, version 1.07. According to Littlstar, the update has been submitted to Sony and should start hitting systems in the coming hours as a beta feature. The feature isn’t endorsed or suggested by Littlstar as being used for this purpose, but this functionality should mean easier access to a wider range of content on PS4, including adult content.

“Littlstar had to request special permissions to have access to the USB port for sideloading content,” wrote Littlstar CEO Tony Mugavero in an email. “The player will support 2D and 3D 360 and 180 content, something the PlayStation player does not currently support (they only have basic 2d 360). We are the only company to have this available, so it’s an exclusive feature to Littlstar on the PSVR. The community was asking us for this because Sony doesn’t have a proper player to support it, so this was really an effort for the community. There were people offering to pay us for it, but we’re offering it for free and just asking for registration. This will enable content creators to preview and showcase content on the PlayStation without needing to go through a potentially lengthy process of upload/transcode/delivery via Littlstar. We’re excited to get this feature out there, and look forward to iterating with the community on future projects.”

The update should enable a much-desired feature for some PS4 owners — the ability to watch a wide range of VR porn downloaded from one of the many websites offering that type of content. For example, as of this writing one of the leading providers of adult VR content, Virtual Real Porn, notes on its website (NSFW) that its videos only play in 2D on PlayStation 4.

There are a number of methods on both PC and mobile headsets for people to load up whatever videos they want stored locally or over of the Internet. Streaming content in VR can dramatically limit the quality of the video, though, and pornographic content typically runs against the rules imposed by sites like YouTube. So for those looking for a high-quality adult video, the best option typically is to download the video and then use an app that “sideloads” the content.

Sony’s own Media Player app appears to only support 360-degree videos and doesn’t support 3D content, though we haven’t tested ourselves. A large number of adult videos, however, are shot in a 180-degree format while some others are shot in 3D. Adding support for this content might essentially establish Littlstar as the go-to app for folks looking to watch a wider range of content on PlayStation 4.

Littlstar to Distribute The Economist’s Award-Winning VR Films

One of the earliest 360-degree video apps to launch was Littlstar back in 2014, arriving on the Samsung Gear VR Innovator’s Edition. Since then the app has massively grown alongside the virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays it supports. As with any video distribution app Littlstar is constantly acquiring new content, most recently with a partnership with international business and world affairs media outlet The Economist.

The Economist announced an expansion of its “Read, Watch, Listen” distribution strategy, enabling it to reach a wider audience by adapting its journalism to existing and emerging platforms.

RecoVR Mosul The Economist

The Economist has produced three immersive 360-degree pieces currently; RecoVR Mosul, a reconstruction of the Mosul Museum and some of its artefacts, destroyed by Islamic State militants in 2015; Passport: Osaka, an offbeat tour of Japan’s second city; and OceansVR: Net positive an animated exploration of the issues around overfishing of the high seas. RecoVR Mosul won the BIMA Jury Prize for Great Innovation, the Drum DADI Award for Best Use of VR and the silver medal in the VR category at the 2016 Lovie Awards, and was part of the DocLab: Seamless Reality program at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam. OceansVR: Net positive was an official selection in the Convergence Program of the New York Film Festival.

“Over the past year we have brought The Economist’s mind-stretching journalism to this new and exciting storytelling medium,” said Tom Standage, deputy editor of The Economist. “We are delighted that our VR pieces have been well received, and have won several awards. By working with Littlstar and other partners we can maximise the reach and awareness of our VR content.”

“We always seek innovative platforms and partners that are a good match for The Economist’s high-quality content which appeals to the globally curious,” said Lydia Kaldas, senior vice president,  Strategy and Channel Relationships at The Economist. “This partnership with Littlstar will help us grow awareness and reach among audiences that are on the forefront of technology and media.”

While its immersive films are available through The Economist’s VR apps for iOS, Android, and Samsung Gear VR; YouTube; and Facebook, the partnership will benefit from Littlstar’s greater platform integration.  The Littlestar app can be found on PlayStation VR; Oculus Rift; HTC Vive; Apple TV; Andoid and iOS devices.

“It’s exciting to see leading publishers like The Economist fully embracing VR as a new medium to tell their stories,” said Matthew Collado, co-founder, Littlstar. “The Economist has produced some of the most interesting and informative 360° journalistic experiences available today, and now viewers across all platforms, from mobile devices to VR headsets, will be able to immerse themselves in The Economist’s award-winning content on Littlstar.”

Disturbed’s Cover of The Sound of Silence Made into VR Experience

There’s been quite a few musicians getting into virtual reality (VR) or 360-degrees for their music videos. Over the last year VRFocus has reported on The Foals, The Donnies The Amys, Neda & Marrs, Mind Enterprises and many more. Now American heavy metal band Disturbed has released a VR video for the hit song The Sound of Silence.

A cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s 60’s classic, The Sound of Silence, Disturbed’s version adds their own style to the haunting track, which the band released last year. The video was produced by Dekker Dreyer of Clever Fox, and directed by Matt Mahurin, who also created the official video for the cover which has accumulated more than 125M YouTube views.

Disturbed - Sound of Silence

Set in a dystopian world, the VR experience expands on the universe first introduced in the official video. Director Matt Mahurin explains: “It was a thrill and a challenge (and maybe a bit ironic) to use the innovative and immersive world of VR to explore the disconnect of direct human connection that results from the addictive world of social media.”

The immersive video is being distributed via Littlstar. You can go the website to watch if you don’t have a suitable head-mounted display (HMD). But the best way to enjoy the experience is to download the app for PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive on PC, Samsung Gear VR and iOS or Android devices for use with Google Cardboard and other headsets.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Littlstar, reporting back with the latest updates.

Wargaming.net Takes You Inside Naval Warfare with HMS Belfast 360° VR Experience

World of Tanks and World of Warships developer, Wargaming.net likes to commemorate major wartime events and dates with innovative promotions. Last month the company launched Tank 100, an augmented reality (AR) app to celebrate 100 years since the first tank entered battle in World War 1. Today Wargaming.net has unveiled a virtual reality (VR) around the HMS Belfast.

The HMS Belfast 360° VR Experience takes viewers through the history of the vessel, which played an important role in the Battle of the North Cape in 1943, assisting in the destruction of one of the last big-gun German warships: Scharnhorst. Whilst in service the ship was the most advanced light cruiser in the world, and she will soon arrive in World of Warships as a Tier VII Premium ship, as part of the Royal Navy line.

HMS Belfast 360° VR Experience

HMS Belfast is the largest preserved warship in Europe, and with the help of World of Warships historians Richard “The Challenger” Cutland and Nicholas “The Chieftain” Moran, viewers will be able to learn about the battle and the ship through 360-degree footage and CGI animations using the detailed 3D ship models from World of Warships.

“HMS Belfast is a famed vessel that inspired us to create an unprecedented VR experience that deepens the historical connection to the World of Warships in-game experience,” said Alex Bobko, Head of Marketing Special Projects at Wargaming. “We just couldn’t pass up such deep access to this noteworthy ship. Visiting her in London allowed us develop groundbreaking content for our viewers, inviting them to jump into a mixed reality VR experience on the real ship, and then get hands-on experience with her in-game.”

The experience can be viewed below, with panning controlled by a mouse or keyboard. The experience can also be viewed through the Littlstar app for devices such as PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR and iOS or Android devices for use with Google Cardboard.
