Original Content? Na, Just Create an VR/AR Spinoff

When a new entertainment platform arises, one method of testing the waters is to take something popular and create a spin-off for the new platform, to see if fans will follow. Alternatively, a spin-off can let you test out new ideas and mechanics with less risk, something that is particularly true for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). VRFocus examines a few examples of franchises that have now crossed into a more immersive world.

ARK Park

ARK: Survival Evolved attracted immediate attention when it was first revealed, with its fantastically detailed open world and, of course, the perennial fascination that human beings seem to have for dinosaurs. So when Snail Games revealed its VR spin off, there was much interest. This is especially true for players who like a more relaxed experience, since ARK Park has a more gentle, exploratory approach than the title it was originally based on.

The Walking Dead: Our World

Despite many people believing zombie-based media is at saturation point, The Walking Dead has continued to be incredibly popular. Originally starting as a comic book, it was then adapted into a TV show in AMC, where its popularity exploded. The Walking Dead: Our World is still awaiting its official worldwide release, but anticipation for the location-based AR experience is high.

Pokemon Go

Pokemon is a worldwide phenomenon, so it was originally something of a surprise that a tiny company like Niantic Labs were the ones chosen to create the AR mobile app for the franchise, Pokemon Go. Despite repeated technical issues, this still seems to have done fairly well, single-handedly raising the profile for AR around the world.

L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files screenshot

L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files

L.A. Noire was a very impressive release for its time, with its groundbreaking facial scanning and animation technology that tried to create a realistic and absorbing world for the player. As such, it seems like a natural fit for VR. Though the entire game content isn’t available in VR, seven cases are available to solve in VR, with a complete makeover to take advantage of the immersive technology.

Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin

The original Psychonauts came out in 2005, and despite its originally disappointing sales figures it quickly gathered a core of dedicated fans and garnered a reputation as a cult classic. An unexpected Twitter conversation led to talks of a sequel, and also to the creation of a VR ‘mid-quel’ Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin that was originally released on PlayStation VR before getting posted over to SteamVR earlier this year.

Final Fantasy XV: Monster of the Deep

Plenty of Final Fantasy fans viewed the epic road trip of the four pretty boys as something of a return to form for the series, which had been flagging somewhat. Many players sank somewhat more time than is wise into the fishing mini-game. Apparently aimed at those players, that fishing mini-game got the VR treatment in Final Fantasy XV: Monster of the Deep, resulting in some surprisingly absorbing gameplay.

Killing Floor: Incursion

Killing Floor started life as a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004, first seeing life in 2005 before getting an upgrade to a standalone commercial release in 2009. It later received a sequel in 2016. Both the original and its sequel were examples of the ‘wave shooter’ that gained popularity in VR, so a conversion to the VR platform seems like a logical choice. Killing Floor: Incursion was born in 2017, originally for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive before being ported to PlayStation VR this year.

‘Killing Floor: Incursion’ to Land on PSVR May 1st, Arriving With ‘Tron-style’ Bonus Level

Last month Killing Floor: Incursion (2017), the co-op zombie shooter from Tripwire Interactive, made its transition from Oculus exclusive to multi-platform title when it launched via Steam with support for HTC Vive and Rift. Now, the zombie-splattering sci-fi horror game is headed to PSVR too.

Update (04/09/18): Tripwire Interactive has released the street date for the PSVR version: May 1st, 2018 for $30 / €30.

On the PlayStation blog, Tripwire detailed the PSVR-only bonus level, which was first announced late last year. Called ‘The Crucible’, the Holdout Mode map departs visually from the base game by offering a “Tron-style virtual sci-fi aesthetic.”

It’s still uncertain if the PSVR version of ‘Killing Floor: Incursion’ will allow cross-play with other headsets.

Original Article (12/11/18): According to a PlayStation blog post, the game is “coming soon” to PlayStation VR headsets, with an unspecified launch date slated for sometime in 2018 May 1st, 2018.

PSVR will also be the first to get a special Holdout Mode map, although Tripwire says it’s only a timed exclusive.

It’s uncertain if the game will feature cross-play with other supported platforms, but if the latest Steam release is any indication, it might never. The Oculus Store version and Steam version don’t use the same backend, meaning you can’t matchmake depending on where you purchased the game.

Here’s how the studio describes the game:

Killing Floor: Incursion includes a full story based campaign with four to six hours of gameplay. The campaign takes the player through diverse environments fighting through a cast of mutated creatures that range from shambling zombie-like monsters to massive biomechanical abominations. Keeping the player company on this journey is NODE, a helpful robot companion that not only shares transmissions from the outside world, but also can be ordered by the player to hunt out ammo, health and more.

Killing Floor: Incursion Confirmed for May Launch on PlayStation VR

Tripwire Interactive launched its first-person shooter (FPS) Killing Floor: Incursion on Oculus Rift in August, followed by a port to HTC Vive. In December the studio confirmed that a PlayStation VR version was in the works. Today its now been revealed Killing Floor: Incursion will arrive for the headset next month.

Killing Floor PSVR Catacombs 01

Based on Tripwire Interactive’s Killing Floor franchise, yet entirely standalone, in Killing Floor: Incursion players must take on the role of an elite Horzine Security Forces soldier as they team up with allies to fend off the horrific Zed hordes using an array of weapons including pistols, shotguns, blades and more. Players will be able to freely explore as they move throughout the environment, scavenging for weapons and ammo while searching for the best locations to fight the monster onslaught.

Killing Floor: Incursion will be playable at the Sony booth during PAX East this weekend and available for pre-order later this month on the PlayStation Store. The PlayStation VR version will come with a timed exclusive Holdout Mode map, “The Crucible”, essentially a ‘Survival’ mode that can be played in either co-op or single-player. In addition, players can expect the PlayStation VR version to include all post-launch content updates released for HTC VIVE and Oculus Rift platforms, including the Hardcore difficulty mode, Katana weapon, leaderboards, and more.

In a recent PlayStation Blog posting John Gibson President, Tripwire Interactive, explains a bit more about The Crucible, saying: “The map contrasts sharply with the realistic style of the rest of the levels in the game with its Tron-style virtual sci-fi aesthetic. The Crucible started out as our development arena for trying out gameplay ideas in the Holdout game mode. When playing it though, we found the map was so fun that we made the decision to fully flesh it out and add it in for PS VR players to enjoy.”

KillingFloor PSVR The Crucible 02

VRFocus reviewed the Oculus Rift version of Killing Floor: Incursiongiving it a solid four-stars, saying: “So is Killing Floor: Incursion still worth getting? Damn right it is. The videogame does have its faults but they aren’t gameplay breaking. Killing Floor: Incursion’s single-player campaign is a glorious action romp that’s easy to play through in one sitting. One thing not mentioned so far is the fact that there’s a co-op option, and as every gamer should know, bringing a mate along to cover each others back only increases the fun factor.”

Killing Floor: Incursion will launch worldwide for PlayStation VR on 1st May, 2018 for $29.99 USD/ €29.99 Euro. For any further updates and announcements, keep reading VRFocus.

Killing Floor: Incursion’s ‘Holdout’ Horde Mode is all About Those Power-ups

Fans of creepy zombie shooter videogames will not have missed the Killing Floor: Incursion. Released in August this year, Tripwire Interactive’s Killing Floor: Incursion for Oculus Rift included Oculus Touch support from day one. With four to six hours of campaign to play in virtual reality (VR) many fans felt like there was still something missing that they were accustomed to playing in Killing Floor: Horde Mode. VRFocus speak to John Gibson, president of Tripwire Interactive about how they’ve added ‘Holdout’, a horde mode for one or two players, just in time for the PlayStation VR launch of the videogame.

Killing Floor: Incursion screenshot

The story unfolds with you as an elite Horzine Security Forces soldier who is tasked with dealing with an outbreak called Zed, unleashing hordes of horrific creatures which have similarities to zombies. With a range of weapons from pistols, shotguns, assault rifles, grenades and knives you can also have melee weapons for close combat fighting. Now for anybody who owns a copy of Killing Floor: Incursion you now get a free update that allows players to access Holdout mode, more commonly known as a ‘horde mode’.

Players will find a single location that they will be charged with defending for as long as possible, the Zeds become progressively more powerful, aggressive and boss-level creatures start entering the location to the point where you might have to fend yourself against four simultaneously. Gibson explains that there is a strategy to defeating the enemies, and it comes to timing and choosing the appropriate power-ups. These will help you get further and get you higher scores as well, which help when it comes to ranking on the global leaderboard.

Choose power-ups options such as:
  • Unlimited ammo: eliminates the need to reload and reduces recoil of the barrel
  • Vampire: steal health from enemies
  • Berseker: gives you 4x strength
  • Nuke: Kills every enemy in the vicinity
  • Zed Time: slows time

To make things even more challenging you’ll have to not only prepare, fight and kill Zeds that come at you but also long range Zeds as well. Gibson says that various enemies can really scare people trying it out in VR, some of them ripping the headset off or even jumping on desks. Since speaking to Gibson at Oculus Connect 4, Killing Floor: Incursion has launched for HTC Vive as of the 7th Novembe2017, and is now also moving to the PlayStation VR, but with no specific date confirmed.

For more tips and tricks on ranking higher on the global leaderboard watch the video below and stay right here at VRFocus for all the latest details on Killing Floor: Incursion.

The Best Oculus Rift Games of 2017

2017 has almost drawn to a close and what a year its been for Oculus Rift and Touch. Not only has the hardware seen a dramatic reduction in price but there’s been plenty of content for consumers to get their hands on. With so much available VRFocus has decided to compile a short list of the best ten videogames that you should own for the device.

The following list – which is in no particular order – aims to cover the the length and breadth of VR content for Oculus Rift. Whether you prefer a big AAA experience from a well known developer or enjoy sampling the delights of the indie community, there’s so many good videogames it can be hard to chose from, meaning there’s always something decent to play.

Oculus Touch

Lone Echo – Ready at Dawn

An Oculus Rift exclusive, Ready at Dawn’s Lone Echo was one of the biggest summer releases for the headset. Combining a compelling story alongside stunning visuals, the experience also managed to achieve what few had before it, comfortable movement in a zero-gravity environment.

The Gallery: Episode 2 – Heart Of The Emberstone – Cloudhead Games

The long awaited second installment to The Gallery: Call of the Starseed, The Gallery: Episode 2 – Heart Of The Emberstone went even bigger and better than before, offering more puzzles, grander settings, and more insight into the sci-fi/fantasy story.

ARKTIKA.1 – 4A Games

4A Games, the studio behind the popular Metro 2033 series brought its knowledge of post-apocalyptic first-person shooters (FPS) to Oculus Rift this October. Featuring a point-to-point teleportation system rather than freeroaming, ARKTIKA.1 has AAA visuals combined with intense FPS action for on of the best story driven shooters on the platform.

Robo Recall – Epic Games

Launched near the start of the year, Epic Games’ first proper VR title was Robo Recall and should be part of every Oculus Rift owners library. Not only for the fact that it’s completely free, but also that it’s one of the most polished titles on the platform. Essentially a wave shooter, Robo Recall allows you to dash around beautifully rendered city streets, destroying an army of walking and flying robots, dispatching them however you wish. Choose the pistols for a more ranged approach, or just forget about guns and go in bare handed, ripping apart metallic bodies at whim.

Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-Ality – Owlchemy Labs

If there’s one title that bound to appear on these ‘Best of’ kind of lists then Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-Ality will be a front runner. Created by Owlchemy Labs (Job Simulator: The 2050 Archivesalongside Adult Swim Games, this VR version of the popular cartoon series hit all the right notes with its combination of adult humour and immersive VR gameplay. While you don’t need to be a fan of the series it certainly doesn’t hurt to have seen a few episodes to get some of the awaiting in jokes.

The Mage’s Tale – inXile Entertainment

While PlayStation VR may have The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VROculus Rift owners don’t have to miss out on the fantasy role-playing games (RPGs) thanks to inXile Entertainment’s The Mage’s TaleYou play a wizards apprentice who must save their master from an evil force. The Mage’s Tale offers the ability to craft hundreds of spells, both defensive and offensive, helping you solve puzzles and vanquish foes with a wave of your hand.

REZ Infinite – Enhance Games

Originally exclusive to PlayStation VR, Enhance Games eventually decided to bring psychedelic shooter REZ Infinite to PC headsets this summer. Featuring reworked levels from the Dreamcast original, the studio also decided to embrace VR further by creating a dedicated level called Area X. While it may not fall into the parameters of many genres, REZ Infinite is one of those titles that once experienced in VR you couldn’t imagine any other way.

Rez Infinite AreaX 07

Skyworld – Vertigo Games

Featuring both single-player and multiplayer modes, Skyworld mixes turn-based strategy with real-time battles in which you play a king looking over their battle map. From here armies and buildings can be created to storm enemy strongholds, whether that’s in the campaign, skirmish mode or the online cross-platform multiplayer. A proper table-top experience,  Skyworld perfectly personifies ‘the easy to pickup but hard to master’ adage, seemingly unforgiving if your strategy isn’t right. Yet highly satisfying when it is.

Battlezone – Rebellion Studios

Another cross-platform multiplayer to make the list, Rebellion’s Battlezone has been made available for all three major headsets, and that’s a good thing as you wouldn’t want to miss out on this arcade-shooter. This is one of VRFocus’  favourite VR titles thanks to that balance between procedurally generated levels, customisation options and retro design nostalgia.

Killing Floor: Incursion – Tripwire Interactive

Originally released as an exclusive for Oculus Rift, Tripwire Interactive’s Killing Floor: Incursion is a horror shooter based on the company’s Killing Floor franchise. Players can choose to go it alone or team up with a friend in co-op mode and explore several environments, such as dilapidated farmhouses to cold, creepy high-tech facilities, all of which contain hordes of horrific ‘Zed’ monsters, which players will need to terminate with extreme prejudice. The entire experience provides a visceral slice of VR action that’s not very festive but enjoyable none the less.

Killing Floor: Incursion Confirmed for PlayStation VR in 2018, Exclusive Holdout Mode Available at launch

When Tripwire Interactive launched its first-person shooter (FPS) Killing Floor: Incursion on Oculus Rift in August the title made quite an impact. It quickly saw a port to HTC Vive a few months later and now the studio has confirmed a PlayStation VR version is in the works with some exclusive timed content.

In Killing Floor: Incursion, players take on the role of an elite Horzine Security Forces soldier as they team up with allies to fend off the horrific hordes of monstrous creatures called Zeds, using a formidable arsenal of weapons including pistols, shotguns, blades and more. Players are able to freely explore their environment – although the levels do have a linear design to them – scavenging for weapons and ammo while searching for the best locations to fight the monster onslaught.

Killing Floor: Incursion screenshot

This will be Tripwire Interactive’s first PlayStation VR title, with only a broad date of 2018 given so far. When Killing Floor: Incursion hit HTC Vive last month the studio also released a major update adding a Hardcore difficulty setting, a Katana weapon, leaderboards, achievements, and the new “Holdout” game mode. Essentially a ‘Survival’ mode that can be played in either co-op or single-player, when the PlayStation VR version launches the headset will get a exclusive Holdout Mode map for a limited time.

Tripwire made the announcement during the PlayStation Experience event this past weekend. The annual consumer showcase run by Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) in California usually sees a few videogame announcements and 2017 was no different. As a Christmas present to PlayStation VR owners the company announced a short free videogame called The Last Guardian VR Experience, as well as the latest Wipeout title getting a VR mode.

Not only that but PlayStation VR will see Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality, Firewall Zero Hour, and Jupiter & Mars all confirmed for launch in 2018.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Tripwire Interactive and Killing Floor: Incursion, keeping you updated with the latest developments.

Killing Floor: Incursion Is Coming To PSVR With An Exclusive Map

Killing Floor: Incursion Is Coming To PSVR With An Exclusive Map

Having made the jump from Oculus Rift to HTC Vive last month, Tripwire Interactive’s Killing Floor: Incursion has now set its sights on a new platform – PlayStation VR (PSVR).

The monster shooter will be arriving on Sony’s headset in 2018, Tripwire confirmed during last week’s PlayStation Experience event. You can check out the trailer below which, if it’s captured on PS4, looks like it’s been ported over pretty well.

Killing Floor: Incursion is a horror-based first-person shooter (FPS) in which players use motion controllers to gun down hordes of terrifying enemies. The game has full co-op support as well as solo play, with a story-driven campaign, though it’s not for the faint of heart.

There’ll be some new content on PSVR too. The game’s Holdout mode, which was introduced at the Vive version’s release, will have a new map that will appear first on PSVR before coming to Rift and Vive at a later date.

We quite liked Incursion when it first debuted on Rift. ” The unsettling atmosphere is pervasive through each level and the excellent gameplay mechanics between melee and gun combat feel visceral and satisfying,” we said in our review. While it does clock in a bit shorter than I’d have liked with only four levels, they are each large and fun to explore. I absolutely recommend that you grab a buddy for some insane co-op fun and lop off a few zed heads for a good time.”

Killing Floor: Incursion Hits HTC Vive, Major Update Released

Tripwire Interactive’s first-person shooter (FPS) Killing Floor: Incursion launched on Oculus Rift back in August. Today, HTC Vive owners get to take on hordes of monstrous nasties as the videogame is now available through Steam. Additionally, both versions will also get the major content update that’s now been released.

The new update includes a Hardcore difficulty setting, a Katana weapon, leaderboards, achievements, and the new “Holdout” game mode. Essentially a survival mode in which players can choose to go it alone or team up with a friend in co-op, defending a random location in one of the game’s maps against increasingly deadly hordes of Zeds in a frenetic, arcade-like action experience. The mode features six power-ups to aid players; a limited time unlimited ammo perk; Vampire, where each attack regenerates a players health; Berzerker, adding explosive damage to attacks; Zed Time, for some slow motion action; 4x Damage, for extra stopping power and finally Nuke, which obliterates all enemies.

Killing Floor: Incursion screenshot

If you’ve not been keeping up with VRFocus’ coverage of Killing Floor: Incursion, players must take on the role of an elite Horzine Security Forces soldier as they team up with allies to fend off the horrific Zed hordes using an array of weapons including pistols, shotguns, blades and more. Players will be able to freely explore as they move throughout the environment, scavenging for weapons and ammo while searching for the best locations to fight the monster onslaught.

Or read up on the title with VRFocusOculus Rift review, which gave the title 4 stars, saying: “Killing Floor: Incursion’s single-player campaign is a glorious action romp that’s easy to play through in one sitting.”

“With Killing Floor: Incursion, we’ve managed to create VR gameplay experiences we couldn’t have achieved with a traditional game,” said Leland Scali, Project Lead at Tripwire Interactive. “The Killing Floor universe has never felt this immersive and we’re excited for more players to experience it first-hand.”

Killing Floor: Incursion is available through Steam for £30.99 GBP. For any further updates from Tripwire Interactive, keep reading VRFocus.

‘Killing Floor: Incursion’ Launches on Steam Today for HTC Vive After Minor Delay

Killing Floor: Incursion (2017), Tripwire Interactive’s latest entry into the zombie-splattering co-op shooter genre, was supposed to arrive on SteamVR-compatible headsets last week. It’s available on Steam starting today for $40.

Update (11/14/17): Even though it launches today, it appears the game isn’t live just yet and still available for pre-order at 15% off. It won’t last for long, so have at it before it reverts to its normal launch price.

Original article (11/08/17): Citing concerns surrounding new features like Holdout mode, an endless high score challenge, Tripwire says the game will be delayed by a week so the developers can give everything an extra check.

Killing Floor: Incursion was once thought to be an Oculus exclusive, thanks to last year’s initial announcement that carried no mention of future support for other VR platforms. Now on Steam, the game is set to support both HTC Vive and Oculus Rift (with Touch). For wayward platform buddies looking to get in on cross-play co-op between Oculus Home versions and Steam-purchased versions, there’s some bad news:

Jared Creasy, Community Manager for Tripwire Interactive told Tom’s Hardware “[i]t will be important to note that the Oculus version and Steam versions will NOT be able to matchmake with each other due to the different backends being used,” said Jared Creasy, Community Manager for Tripwire Interactive.

Here’s the devs explaination, posted on the studio’s blog.

Hello everyone,

Many of you have noticed that the Steam release date for Killing Floor: Incursion has changed from today to November 14th. We would like to confirm this change and provide additional information about what is happening.

As Incursion proceeded towards the finish line for this major milestone (with the new game mode – Holdout, community requested features, and a new platform release as well) it became apparent that we needed to take a bit more time to get things right. What this means is that the team is taking an extra week to look over all these items to make sure they are up to a standard that not only we are happy with, but we believe you the fans will be happy with as well.

We are very excited to bring the game to Steam and get the new content and features into the hands of new and existing fans as quickly as we can. We strongly believe this is the best move for the game (and its fans) and we thank you for your understanding and patience.

Killing Floor: Incursion is currently 15% off on Oculus Home, and will launch with a 15 % off price on Steam November 14th.
