Jaunt to Enrich its VR App Experience Using Adaptive Bitrates

As virtual reality (VR) technology becomes better so does every other technology associated with it, including 360-degree video. 360 cameras – whether professional or consumer – have massively improved over the last couple of years, not only in visual quality but also post-processing. For consumers that end result is very important, yet it’s something the industry is still trying to improve upon – mainly due to video on VR headsets looking nowhere near as pin sharp as HD TV’s. One of the biggest 360 production company’s, Jaunt, has announced its plan to improve the viewing experience, Content Adaptive Bitrate Encoding (CABE).

From today, Jaunt will be employing its CABE streaming solution to provide a better viewing experience, regardless of platform, based on an individual’s available bandwidth and device capabilities without the need to download entire pieces of content and with minimal buffering.

Going into greater depth about the CABE solution Jaunt explained in a press statement: “The CABE technology improves upon the current “fixed ladder” for ABR streaming. Previously, multiple representations were generated through a predetermined set of representations, or fixed ladders which, based on the bandwidth and device capability delivered between 720p 30fps to 4K 60fps, mono or stereo VR video at bitrate ranging from ~1 Mbps to upwards of 60 Mbps. With the new CABE algorithm, the bitrate ladder is optimized for each title published through Jaunt’s XR Platform. As a result, our users can now experience high-resolution, stereo content at a lower bitrates, while simultaneously reducing storage and CDN costs for Jaunt and our publishing partners.”

“To deliver a truly immersive experience, it is vital to stream virtual reality content in a stereo layout, and at UHD resolutions,” said Sourabh Khire, Software Engineer at Jaunt in a statement. “While broadband users can experience this by streaming from the higher ends of a traditional ABR streaming ladder, mobile users who typically stream at a much lower bandwidth might miss out on this premium quality experience. By enhancing our existing ABR streaming technology with content adaptive encoding, each of our titles is optimally encoded to deliver a high resolution, stereo experience at the lowest possible bitrates. We strongly believe that this enhancement specifically tuned for immersive content, will put true immersivity within reach of all of our users.”

The roll out of the CABE streaming solution follows on from last weeks Jaunt XR platform announcement, a white label distribution solution available to media companies, brands, content aggregators and enterprise customers. This will enable them to deliver immersive VR, augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) content directly to audiences through their owned and operated channels.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Jaunt, reporting back with any further updates.

Jaunt Expands VR Media Platform Into AR And Mixed Reality

Jaunt Expands VR Media Platform Into AR And Mixed Reality

Jaunt debuted in 2013 as a platform for viewing virtual reality movies and 360-degree entertainment. Now it is expanding beyond that with its Jaunt XR platform.

The platform from the San Mateo, California-based company will now be expanded to include augmented reality and mixed-reality content, with the latter referring to content that combines various types of real, augmented, and virtual content.

Jaunt XR will be a white-label distribution platform, meaning big brands and media could adopt it to launch their own stores or web sites for mixed-reality content.

“The next generation of digital media is immersive and media companies and brands are embracing this evolution. The challenge for these companies to meet the demand of the market has been in the ability to distribute in their own channels,” said Jaunt CEO George Kliavkoff, in a statement. “Jaunt has deep experience with immersive media and we are unique in being a cross-platform provider that has perfected the creation and distribution of immersive content. Now we’ve decided to bring these tools to market to help our partners with scalable immersive solutions.”

Along with the debut of the platform, Medical Realities — the company behind the world’s first live 360-degree operation, performed on a cancer patient at the Royal London Hospital — has adopted Jaunt’s technology to work with its surgical training app.

“The evolution of the Medical Realities app has been an important part of the overall expansion of our brand,” said Steve Dann, Medical Realities CEO, in a statement. “Working with Jaunt has allowed us to enhance our customer experience and expand our distribution across platforms. We are very excited about the opportunities before us.”

Another company, vTime, is using Jaunt XR to develop co-watching experiences on its VR social network.

“In Jaunt, with their immersive technology, we’ve found the perfect partner to help us towards our vision of delivering the very best sociable experiences for our users to enjoy with friends, family and others, anywhere in the world,” said Clemens Wangerin, managing director at vTime, in a statement. “Jaunt has huge credibility in immersive technology and is an obvious choice for this next stage of innovation for us.”

The Jaunt XR platform is a scalable solution for the distribution of all immersive content, including virtual reality video, interactive VR, branched storytelling narratives, augmented reality, and mixed reality.

The XR Platform allows customers to publish immersive content across all 360 social platforms, including Facebook 360, YouTube 360, and Twitter; native iOS and Android mobile apps; and all VR platforms and headsets. The new Jaunt XR platform also includes an end-to-end media manager built for immersive content. It supports 28 languages and has an intelligence suite that provides data and analytics specific to immersive content. The XR Platform uses cloud infrastructure that can be partitioned as needed for local regions.

In addition to providing partners with the XR Platform for the distribution of immersive content, the company just released their first six degrees of freedom (6DoF) mixed-reality experience, Free the Night, in partnership with Microsoft for Windows Mixed Reality. Jaunt’s own studio, Jaunt Studios, was nominated for two Emmy Awards, winning its first Emmy Award for the documentary film Collisions, directed by Lynette Wallworth. Jaunt Studios has produced more than 300 pieces of immersive content and has aggregated the largest library of immersive content, which the company licenses to distributors throughout the globe.

The Jaunt XR Platform is available now and will be one of the immersive technology company’s showcase pieces at CES 2018.

In 2017, Jaunt established Shanghai-based Jaunt China, a VR company formed in partnership with Shanghai Media Group (SMG) and China Media Capital (CMC).

Jaunt’s investors include The Walt Disney Company, Evolution Media Partners, CMC, Highland Capital Partners, Redpoint Ventures, SMG, Axel Springer, ProSiebenSat.1 SE, The Madison Square Garden Company, Google Ventures, Peter Gotcher, and Sky.

Hulu VR to get Seven Exclusive Jaunt VR Experiences Including INVISIBLE & Home Turf

Jaunt VR is one of the most productive content creation company’s working in virtual reality (AR) at present, having recently released experience such as Free the Night and Through Youwhilst winning an Emmy for its documentary, CollisionsToday, the studio has announced a new partnership with immersive streaming app Hulu VR, to bring a range of titles to the service.

Hulu VR will be getting a total of seven experiences from Jaunt, all of which will be exclusive. Currently only two have been revealed as part of the deal, five-part scripted VR series INVISIBLE, as well as two episodes from the action and adventure series Home Turf.

HomeTurf

INVISIBLE is a supernatural drama series following a mysterious American family, the Ashlands, whose reach extends into the largest corporations and governments across the world. Although they control a large portion of the world’s economy they exist in relative ambiguity. They move without being seen and somehow without being known. That’s because select family members have the power to make themselves invisible.

INVISIBLE was created by a partnership between Condé Nast Entertainment (CNÉ), Jaunt, Samsung Electronics America, Inc., and the 30 Ninjas team of Director Doug Liman (Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) and Producer Julina Tatlock, along with Oscar-nominated Screenwriter Melisa Wallack (Dallas Buyers Club).

The Home Turf series takes users on iconic adventures all over the world including Iceland and Utah. In addition to the beautiful landscapes on offer, the series follows famous figures including world-renowned slackliner Andy Lewis.

The new deal gives consumers access to a larger library of high-quality and award-winning immersive content across all major devices where the Hulu VR app can be streamed, which includes Google Daydream, PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

Additionally, Hulu subscribers can also stream Hulu’s entire library of 2D content, including current season content, past seasons of hit shows, movies and Hulu Originals, in immersive 3D environments.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Hulu VR and Jaunt, reporting back with any further updates.

Jaunt’s Free the Night now Available for Windows Mixed Reality

Cinematic virtual reality (VR) company Jaunt VR debuted its latest project, an interactive experience called Free the Night at the The Future of Storytelling Summit (FoST) in New York City last month. Today the experience has been made publicly available, exclusively for Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

Free the Night is the brain child of award-winning interactive filmmaker Nicole McDonald, who’s previously worked with NASA, John Legend and Cirque Du Soleil. The experience was inspired by her childhood experiences gazing into the night sky with her father, taking viewers on a journey into the stars.

Free the Night

As Free the Night is a six degrees of freedom (6DOF) interactive experience viewers can interact with the night sky, picking and placing lights out of a city skyline, triggering real-time physical reactions, whilst seeing and hearing the light extinguish, then reignite as the lights can be placed back into the night sky where they belong. Once the liberation of the night sky is complete, slight touches or swipes will trigger real-time physical reactions: stars swooping, dancing, travelling all around viewers, and much more.

While McDonald provided the creative inspiration and direction for Free the Night, Giant Propeller was enlisted to animate the experience, meticulously building over 300 assets with a particular focus on generating a unique style, colour and lighting for a realistic and artful approach.

A team led by developer K.C. Austin from Los Angeles-based studio Ion Wolf crafted the tactile and responsive world, allowing users to be placed in the middle of the narrative and play with the stars. Framestore – which created the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them VR experience – was brought on board to optimise the experience to run on low specification hardware capable of delivering comparable visual fidelity for computers without a standard VR-ready graphics card.

For today’s launch Jaunt has created an extend trailer for Free the Night. For the latest Jaunt updates, keep reading VRFocus.

Jaunt VR Releases Experimental Experience Through You

Award-winning filmmaker and dancer Lily Baldwin and Emmy award-winning director Saschka Unseld (Henry , Dear Angelica) have created an experimental virtual reality (VR) experience Through You which Jaunt has announced is now available through its app.

Filled with saturated colors, a bold score and dance, Through You tells the story of love born, lived, lost, burned, and seemingly gone forever.

“The story begins in the 1970’s when a couple named James and Julia first meet, and stretches through 2046 when they have grown old and questioning, “Can love be found again?”, the official description explains. “James is played by Juilliard-trained actor Amari Cheatom. Julia is played in her youth and old age by two different actors: contemporary dancer and choreographer Joanna Kotze, and Marni Thomas Wood, the last dancing member of the original Martha Graham Company, and professor emerita/ co-founder of UC Berkeley’s dance program.”

“We treat the viewer like a fellow dancer, speaking with movement and bypassing words. We put them at the center of the story, first as a lover and then as a memory,” said Baldwin. “With the potential inherent in 360 degrees of immersion, we ask: What does the passage of time feel like? What does love and loss feel like?”

“We both have a very clear opinion on what we like and what we don’t. But the process of how we achieve these things is quite opposite,” adds Unseld. “In a way this yin-yang approach made our collaboration perfect. Both of us were able to judge each other’s work from a distance and help each other focus on our strengths.”

Featuring an original score by Mark degli Antoni, with sound design and binaural mix from Q Department, Through You is the first live action immersive experience directed by Unseld who’s better known for animations like Henry and Dear Angelica which were created at the now defunct Oculus Story Studios.

Through You is available through the free Jaunt VR app store, which supports iOS, Android, Cardboard, Google Daydream, Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR today at 10 am ET.

Jaunt’s VR App for Windows Mixed Reality to feature Cortana Voice Navigation

Today’s virtual reality (VR) news has been firmly focused on Microsoft and its Windows Mixed Reality (MR) headset announcements. One of which was the unveiling of several apps and videogames that’ll support the new head-mounted displays (HMDs) from HP, Dell, Acer and Lenovo. This included Jaunt’s own VR app, which the company has now said will feature a bunch of improvements.

The Jaunt VR app for Windows Mixed Reality is set to feature a more intuitive user interface, voice navigation using Microsoft Cortana, and content adaptive streaming to insure optimal image quality relative to available bandwidth.

“Partnering with Microsoft for the launch of Windows Mixed Reality allows Jaunt to bring one of the largest libraries of high quality immersive cinematic content to one of the most prolific technology brands in the world. Microsoft’s significant investment in mixed reality speaks volumes about the future of this medium,” said Jaunt CEO & President, George Kliavkoff in a statement. “Working with Microsoft to bring the latest version of our app to audiences worldwide has allowed us to continue pushing the limits of what interactive content has to offer.”

Jaunt Mixed Image

Additionally, the launch of the app will also see the premiere of the company’s first interactive cinematic 6DOF film, Free the Night, directed by interactive filmmaker Nicole McDonald, of Marry the Moon and Hue, in which viewers pick lights out of a city skyline, placing them back into the night sky.

“As our first 6DOF film, FREE THE NIGHT expands Jaunt Studios’ offerings to give our users the next generation of interactive films,” added Kliavkoff. “It is beautifully imagined and executed by Nicole and the Studio team. It’s an exceptional experience.”

Jaunt’s VR app for Windows Mixed Reality will be available mid-October for the launch of the headsets.
