Meta & BMW Are Integrating AR/VR Headsets into Cars, Release Timeline Uncertain

Initially announced in 2021, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared an update on the company’s research partnership with BMW, which focuses on integrating AR and VR into vehicles to make people more productive, social, and entertained while traveling.

The ultimate aim in the BMW/Meta partnership is to accurately anchor virtual objects relative to the car’s motion by hooking into the tracking system of both the car and a Meta headset, which researchers say includes the Meta Quest Pro standalone mixed reality headset and the company’s in-development AR headset, Project Aria.

Without such a system in place, the headset’s rotational tracking would noticeably drift as the car makes turns and other adjustments, making it essentially unusable for anything but perfectly straight sections of road.

Check out the video detailing the research below:

Still considered a proof-of-concept prototype, Meta says the partnership has already overcome some key technical challenges, such as fusing the headset and car’s sensors to understand their relative position. That said, the companies don’t think it’s ready for the public just yet.

“It is too early to tell exactly how or when this technology will make it into customers’ hands, but we envision a number of potential use cases for XR devices in vehicles—from assisting the driver in locating their car in a crowded parking lot to alerting them to hazards on the road and surfacing important information about the vehicle’s condition,” said Claus Dorrer, Head of BMW Group Technology Office in the US. “The implications of future AR glasses and VR devices—for passengers as well as drivers—are promising. The research partnership with Meta will allow us to discover what immersive, in-vehicle XR experiences could look like in the future and spearhead the seamless integration of such devices into cars.”

AR and VR integration in cars isn’t an entirely new area of research. It’s been the sole focus of Audi-backed startup Holoride, which recently partnered with HTC to deliver in-car VR entertainment via HTC Vive Flow. Still, Holoride has been mostly grabbed headlines as a tradeshow mainstay; it hasn’t seen mass adoption yet despite only requiring a $200 retrofit pack, which enables Vive Flow owners to play VR in cars.

In the end, it seems car companies are now seeing the writing on the wall that riders will maybe very soon—but not right now—want to bring their own XR devices and actually use them in the car, just like you might a smartphone, albeit with more utility than any infotainment screen on offer.

Audi Cars to Gain holoride VR Entertainment This Summer

The idea of holoride’s in-car virtual reality (VR) entertainment system was always an interesting one, albeit one that seemed a little way off. Things have certainly stepped up a gear in 2022 with the company revealing a partnership with HTC Vive last month, and now confirmation that the first cars to be holoride compatible will be select Audi’s this summer.

holoride - Audi

The rollout will begin in June 2022, coming to models featuring Audi’s third-generation modular infotainment toolkit (MIB 3) in Germany, the UK and the US initially. Those models will include the Audi A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Audi Q5, Q7, Q8, Audi e-tron and Audi e-tron GT Quattro, expanding into further European, Canadian, Japanese and Chinese markets later on.

Holoride’s technology means that backseat passengers can put on a VR headset like the Vive Flow glasses and enjoy videogames, films and other interactive content. What makes the holoride experience slightly different from simply using any old VR headset in a car is its “elastic content”. This adapts to not only the movement of a car in real-time but also journey time and driving route.

So imagine you’re on a VR rollercoaster or in a spaceship, as the car accelerates so too does the ship or as the car turns a corner the spaceship does likewise. In this fashion, holoride claims that motion sickness should be reduced to a minimum.

And the system is completely wireless as well, with no cables running from the drivers’ console to the rear, all thanks to Bluetooth. The holoride system won’t support every Bluetooth-enabled VR headset, only those specifically enabled like Vive Flow.

No surprise really that Audi would be the first car manufacturer to feature this in-car entertainment experience, it was Audi that first envisioned the idea. Holoride was then spun out as a startup to further develop the technology for different manufacturers. The first example was an in-car Marvel VR experience during CES 2019.

The very latest version of holoride is being demoed at SXSW this week in Austin, Texas. For further updates on the latest innovative use cases for VR, keep reading gmw3.

Vive Flow Partners With holoride on VR In-Car Entertainment

Wireless virtual reality (VR) headsets allow you to enjoy immersive entertainment wherever you go. Holoride has specialised in in-car entertainment for several years now having previously partnered with companies like Audi. Today, holoride has announced a new collaboration with HTC Vive, utilising its new Vive Flow headset to aid the in-car platform’s market launch later this year.

holoride HTC Partnership

As part of its Mobile World Congress 2022 announcements, holoride’s technology allows car passengers to enjoy immersive entertainment on the move. It takes real-time motion, location and navigational data and combines it with VR content, think of it like a VR rollercoaster that matches every turn the car makes.

Vive Flow will be the first holoride-ready VR device as it prepares to launch the service in the second half of 2022. It’s not just VR content passengers can view, as holoride has an advanced cinema mode so individual users can watch 2D content on a virtual, motion-synchronized cinema screen.

“holoride is on a mission to create exciting in-vehicle experiences for passengers to travel the Metaverse, and that starts with putting our technology in the hands – or on the heads – of riders,” said Nils Wollny, CEO and co-founder of holoride in a statement. “VIVE Flow is the ideal device for on-the-go XR, so we are thrilled to be partnering with HTC VIVE to give riders direct access to holoride. The glasses’ sleek, portable design means riders can enjoy a fun and connected experience anywhere they go.”

holoride

“Vive Flow can fit in the palm of your hand and still deliver a breathtaking experience,” adds Shen Ye, Global Head of Hardware at HTC Vive. “Paired with holoride’s impressive tech, you’ll be able to turn car rides into virtual amusement parks. We’re very excited to work with holoride in shaping the future of passenger entertainment.”

Vive Flow should be ideal for this kind of use case as its fairly compact and lightweight in comparison to other standalone headsets. Weighing in at 189g, Vive Flow connects to a smartphone to deliver content, either cabled or by way of its external battery pack, wirelessly to smart devices.

As further details arise regarding holoride’s launch gmw3 will keep you updated.

Schell Games Is Making A VR Game You Play In A Car

I Expect You To Die and Until You Fall developer Schell Games’ latest VR effort isn’t designed for a home-based standalone headset or room-scale technology, but instead to be played inside a car.

That’s right, a moving car. On the road and everything.

The game is called Cloudbreaker and it was revealed during a talk at the AWE event in Santa Clara this week. Cloudbreaker is being built for Holoride, a platform that tracks locational and navigational data from a vehicle and implements that into VR experiences. The idea is for a means of immersive in-car entertainment for passengers in vehicles that also doesn’t make you motion sick given your body will be feeling the natural motions of a car that are reflected in-game. Obviously it doesn’t work for the driver considering that’s about as dangerous a thing you could possibly do.

Cloudbreaker

In Cloudbreaker, players are transported to the ruins of the Cloudscape and do battle with enemies known as the automata in third-person. You go on runs through the dungeon, daring yourself to stay longer as the difficulty increases. When you’re in-game, lines at the bottom of the screen represent driving along the road. The game is being built using Holoride’s own Elastic SDK. Some footage of the game was captured during the AWE presentation, which you can see below (thanks to eminus for capturing it).

“Cloudbreaker is the first experience we’ve created using the Holoride Elastic SDK, and we are thrilled with it,” said Jesse Schell, CEO of Schell Games, said in a prepared statement. “In-car entertainment is going to be a key part of what is thrilling about the metaverse, and playing Cloudbreaker feels like a glimpse into the future.”

Cloudbreaker is set to release on the platform sometime in 2022. It’s certainly an intriguing concept though if the industry is still trying to get VR headsets into people’s homes, getting them into the backs of cars feels like it’s a fair bit further out. This isn’t the next big home release from Schell Games, then, though the studio did tease earlier this year that it’s working on a project that takes an interesting approach to physics in VR.

Holoride Secures $12M Funding to Create Immersive in-car VR Experiences

Holoride, the Audi co-founded startup aiming to inject immersive VR and AR into everyday car travel, announced it’s raised a €10 million (~$12 million) Series A investment round.

The company first unveiled its tech back at CES 2019, showing off its platform which integrates a car’s movement with a VR content. The idea is backseat passengers can use a VR headset whilst playing videos and games that are synced-up with the vehicle’s movement, something that aims to not only be fun, but also a comfortable experience since all of the movement you’re feeling in-game is also happening in the physical world.

The round was led by Terranet AB, developers of advanced driver-assistance software (ADAS). Other co-investors include Multi-Dimensional Connectivity (MDC) Limited, Schell Games, Audi, and a group of Chinese financial and automotive technology investors organized by investment professional Jingjing Xu.

The company says it’s using the fresh funding to acquire more talent, attract more content creators, and prepare for its international launch starting next year. The latest round brings the company’s estimated valuation to €30 million (~$36 million).

Terranet, a creator of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), says it will work with Holoride to “enhance the real-time, in-car XR experience by incorporating aspects of its versatile sensor tech software to ensure precision, speed, and intelligence as vehicles move safely and quickly through their environments.”

Pär-Olof Johannesson, CEO of Terranet, will also be joining Holoride’s advisory board as part of the deal.

Holoride Taps Russo Brothers And AR/VR Pioneers For Strategy Board

When Holoride showed off its in-car VR entertainment solution last year, it was clear the Audi spin-off was planning to turn famous Hollywood properties into interactive 3D experiences that will thrill backseat passengers. Now the company is adding a group of advisors from the movie, mixed reality, and transportation industries to bolster its push into the marketplace.

If you weren’t already familiar with Holoride, the concept is genuinely compelling: One or more VR headsets combine with an in-car computer and live car telemetry data to provide interactive experiences that respond to the car’s motions. Last October, the company offered free rides at Universal Studios Hollywood with a Bride of Frankenstein theme, letting a car’s passengers blast away at ghosts from a virtual coach that matched the real-world motions of the SUV.

As the coronavirus pandemic stretches on, data is beginning to show that people in “recovering” cities are increasingly turning to private vehicles rather than public transportation for health reasons — a change that might further choke highways and stretch out drive times. While that would be bad news for passengers, in-car solutions such as Holoride could make the experience more entertaining.

That’s why it’s forming an advisory board, and its list of advisors is equal parts long and impressive. It starts with Hollywood heavy hitters — directors Anthony and Joseph Russo of Avengers and Arrested Development fame — as well as their partner Todd Makurath of Superconductor, an agency that’s been working with Holoride for some time. Holoride is adding Oculus VR pioneer Palmer Luckey to the group as an advisor on technology and product innovation, Metaio AR founder Thomas Alt as an AR/VR and innovation advisor, and XR/AI/ML consultancy founder Kathleen Cohen to advise on ethics.

On the transportation front, HyperloopTT’s Dirk Ahlborn will assist the company in mobility industry opportunities, while Anorak Ventures founder Greg Castle will advise on funding and financial prospects. Collectively, the group will add to the considerable experience already possessed by Holoride founders Nils Wollny, Marcus Kuehne, and Daniel Profendiner, who are backed in part by Audi as a minority stakeholder.

Holoride is targeting a 2021 or 2022 debut in passenger vehicles, with multiple pop-up opportunities to showcase the technology between now and then. With the new advisory group in place, there’s every likelihood of compelling content, thoroughly up-to-date mixed reality technology, and widespread vehicular support whenever Holoride systems become available to the general public.
