Google Confirms All the Games Coming to Daydream

Google didn’t disappoint on the hardware front when it finally unveiled the Daydream View head-mounted display (HMD) yesterday. With its fabric covering, a controller that fits into the headset, and several colour combinations, the company is definitely going for a mass market appeal. As for content the event did feature some but it was certainly lacking with only some videogames and experiences being shown. That’s not to say Google hasn’t got content lined up for the headset, on its Daydream View blog page Google has  listed 30 titles currently in development.

Some of the titles shown below have already been announced, such as Resolution Games’ Wonderglade, first shown at Google I/O in May. While others are brand new with very little details currently available, such as Hunters Gate from Climax Studios and EarthShape by Bithell Games.

White Elk Studios’ Eclipse Coming to Google Daydream

Google has finally unveiled the Daydream head-mounted display (HMD), a fabric covered device with a Bluetooth remote/controller. While hardware was the main news along with launch details and price, on the videogame front the news was some what lacking. Only CCP Game’s Gunjack sequel made it into the event along with educational title Starchart. But that’s not to say there isn’t immersive content coming to the device as developers have begun revealing projects online. One of which is White Elk Studios with its first-person title Eclipse.

Taking to Twitter the developer said: “We are thrilled to announce Eclipse is coming to #Daydream!” No further details have been released for the title which until now had only been confirmed for Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) PlayStation VR.

Eclipse is an exploration game set on a sentient planet with a dark past. After crash-landing players will set about exploring the planet which is littered with the remnants of a failed civilization. Finding the Artifact, a mysterious device that lets them control elements of the world around them and interact with the ancient technology, players must collect various fragments that make up the device to escape the planet.

VRFocus previewed the title back in December 2015 and since then hasn’t heard much else on its development until now.

Now that Daydream has had its official reveal today expect more developers to be announcing project over the next few weeks. Resolution Games is currently making WonderGlade while nDreams has said its working on two projects for the device, but these were revealed back in May.

Daydream will be released this November for $79 USD, the event also featured the newest Google smartphone Pixel which will compatible with the headset.

Capacitive studs on the headset/phone interface which trigger screen auto-adjustments when a phone is inserted. Lightweight, soft-touch design – one of the lightest we’ve experienced. Finally, it seems a 90 degree FOV is being mentioned in relation to the headset, which will likely vary depending on which size phone is being used.

Bithell Games Announces EarthShape for Daydream

Google’s event today, ‘Made By Google’ didn’t disappoint in terms of virtual reality (VR) announcements. The Daydream View hardware has finally been revealed along with some of the videogames and apps that’ll be coming to the device. Adding to that has been Mike Bithell, a British indie videogame developer who’s been working on Volume: Coda for PlayStation VR. He’s now revealed EarthShape for Daydream.

As Bithell describes EarthShape in a Tumblr post:”It’s a game about the millennia spanning mission of the first astronaut to leave Earth and terraform the universe. A ‘StarSeeker’ joined by a plucky lander. Together, they’ll travel the universe planting flowers and kicking off life through a fun new gameplay mechanic.”

The developer will be working with a team of veterans on the project including composer Russell Shaw (who composed the music for the Fable franchise), animator Tim Borrelli (Red Faction, Saints Row) plus several others. He’s also managed to get the vocals talents of Sue Perkins (The Great British Bake Off) to tell the story and lend her comedy talents as well.

No further detail’s on the project have been released other than a couple of screenshots, which showcase a unique, cartoony art style featuring the astronaut and the lunar pod.

Daydream will be launching in November for $79 USD in a slate colour. It going to be the first headset that’ll be available in other combinations with crimson and snow being launched at a later date. The event has also seen the reveal of Pixel, Google’s first smartphone that’s Daydream compatible. No other smartphones were unveiled at the event to be compatible.
