Meta Rolls out 3D Avatars Across its Apps

Whether it’s a videogame or the metaverse, avatars are an essential part of the whole process allowing users to create their own digital self; lifelike or not. Today, Meta has announced a new update to its avatar system rolling out its 3D avatars across Facebook, Instagram (Stories and DM), and Messenger.

Having released more expressive virtual reality (VR) avatars almost a year ago, Meta’s other platforms are getting the avatar treatment. So you can create one avatar and use it across all of Meta aforementioned apps as it continues implementing its metaverse vision. Make a new Facebook profile pic or pop yourself on a sticker, for example.

The avatars will feature a limited rollout, to begin with, available to users in the US, Canada and Mexico. Today’s launch also adds more options to make Meta’s avatars even more inclusive. Wheelchairs, cochlear implants and over-the-ear hearing aids (for one or both ears) have been added.

You’ll also notice a general refinement in the avatar design. Facial shapes and skin shaders have been tweaked so you can create a more accurate digital you. This isn’t a flatscreen update either, the VR version is getting the same improvements.

“We’re updating Meta avatars with a lot more expressions, faces and skin tones, as well as wheelchairs and hearing aids,” said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a statement. “We’re starting to experiment with digital clothing too, including official NFL shirts you can wear for the Super Bowl. You can use your avatar across Quest, Facebook, Instagram and Messenger. One day you’ll have multiple avatars ranging from expressive to photorealistic. Looking forward to sharing more soon.”

When it comes to those NFL shirts, they’re available until 28th February in three flavours. The two Super Bowl LVI contenders branded shirts for the dedicated fans and a neutral shirt for those who just like to watch American Football.

As for the wider rollout, Meta says the update will be globally available in the next few months. For continued updates keep reading gmw3.

Facebook Messenger Comes to Oculus Quest in New Update

Facebook announced that the v25 software update for its Quest platform is set to include Facebook Messenger, which will be available to anyone who is logged into their Facebook account on either Quest or Quest 2.

This will allow users to chat with Facebook friends who own any device with Messenger. The company says in a blogpost that without taking off the headset you’ll be able to write messages by typing with a virtual keyboard, select from pre-written texts, or use Quest’s voice-to-text function.

Additionally, users can also send private Oculus Party invites to make jumping into multiplayer games more simple. Facebook says the v25 update is rolling out starting this week, however may take a few weeks to arrive to all users.

Whether for ill or good, finally having a cross-platform, system-wide messenger on Quest will hopefully make it easier to meet up with friends and maintain contact with the outside world without having to exit VR. Although slightly confusing, this effectively creates two messenger options in-headset: one using your public-facing Facebook account, and the Oculus Chats messenger which is used exclusively with people on your Oculus friends list.

Facebook says that using Messenger on Oculus doesn’t change your existing Oculus privacy settings, and that you can still message your Oculus friends using Oculus Chats with your existing Oculus username.

Facebook Messenger Arrives in Oculus Quest’s Latest Update

Oculus Quest 2

Facebook’s whole premise is about connecting people yet this ability in virtual reality (VR) has been patchy over the years. Facebook Spaces was its first proper attempt with built-in Messenger functionality but that app closed in 2019 to make way for Horizon. With the roll-out of Oculus Quest’s next software update this week, Messenger is set to return.

Oculus Quest - Messenger

Bundled in the v25 update alongside App Lab, Messenger will be made available to those who have logged into Oculus Quest/Quest 2 using their Facebook account. Entirely in VR so there’s no need to remove your headset, you can chat to friends as you normally would, no matter the device they happen to be using.

You’ll have the option to type messages out in VR, use a pre-written conversation starter or utilise Oculus’ voice-to-text feature. If everyone happens to be in VR whilst chatting away in Messenger then you’ll be able to create an Oculus Party to all jump into a videogame together.

When it comes to privacy Oculus notes: “Choosing to communicate with your Facebook friends with Messenger on Oculus doesn’t change your existing Oculus privacy settings. You can still message your Oculus friends using Oculus Chats with your existing Oculus username.”

Oculus Quest 2

While there’s been no mention of the Multi-User Accounts feature discussed in January, Messenger will be geared up ready for when that happens. “If your friends and family want to borrow your headset, you can sign out of Messenger at any time in your Messenger settings before sharing the headset with them. To sign back in, select your Messenger profile and re-enter your password.”

If you’ve not been able to update your Oculus Quest yet it’s because v25 is being gradually rolled out, so your device may receive it in a week or so. For further Oculus Quest updates, keep reading VRFocus.

Facebook Starts Rolling Out Messenger To Oculus Quest

Facebook started the process of adding Messenger to Oculus Quest and Quest 2. The feature is tied to Oculus Party creation so you can jump into a game together from a conversation.

The feature marks another step on the path of backing social VR features with a Facebook account. The feature was first announced in September last year and begins rolling out this week, according to a blog post.

From the post:

“Starting this week, we will begin rolling out Messenger on Oculus to people who have logged into Quest and Quest 2 using their Facebook account. With this update, you can choose to chat with your Facebook friends anywhere they have Messenger, even if they’re not in VR. You can reach them without taking off your headset—and they can chat with you too. Write messages however you’d like, whether typing them out in VR, selecting a pre-written conversation starter, or using our voice-to-text feature. And if you’re chatting with your friends in Messenger and decide you all want to play together, you can easily create an Oculus Party so you can jump in and play the same game together.”

Choosing to communicate with your Facebook friends with Messenger on Oculus doesn’t change your existing Oculus privacy settings. You can still message your Oculus friends using Oculus Chats with your existing Oculus username.

If your friends and family want to borrow your headset, you can sign out of Messenger at any time in your Messenger settings before sharing the headset with them. To sign back in, select your Messenger profile and re-enter your password.

Facebook Messenger Oculus Quest Support Is Coming Soon

Facebook Messenger Oculus Quest support is coming in the near future, the company has confirmed.

The news was revealed during the Facebook Connect stream today. Facebook Reality Lab’s Head of Product Marketing Elizabeth Fitzgerald took to the stream to talk about the social VR aspects of the company’s work going forwards.

After talking about the recently-launched betas for Facebook Horizon and Oculus Venues, Fitzgerald confirmed that Messenger was coming “to the Quest platform” sometime in the future. A graphic showed an Oculus party invite going out on Messenger’s mobile app before Fitzgerald also confirmed you’ll be able to use the service in-VR to talk with Facebook friends and jump into games together.

Messenger is Facebook’s instant messaging app, native to the platform. On browser, you can access it whilst on Facebook itself, and it also has a dedicated app for smartphones. We’ll be interested to see just how key it becomes to the Quest ecosystem in the months to come.

“We’ve heard that people want easier ways to find each other in VR. To coordinate and jump into apps and experiences together,” Fitzgerald said ahead of announcing the news. “And of course, for us to easily find each other in those apps.”

A specific release date for Messenger integration wasn’t revealed, though the news comes just as Facebook reveals the Oculus Quest 2, an improved and cheaper headset with a better display and more powerful innards. The kit is launching on October 13th for $299 for the 64GB version and $399 for the 256GB version. Expect to see more news about Facebook Messenger on Oculus Quest going on from launch, then.

Augmenting Facebook Messenger

Facebook Messenger is commonly used all over the world to help keep family and friends in touch with each other. At the F8 conference, Facebook announced that it would be enhancing the Messenger experience by bringing Augmented Reality (AR) camera effects into the Messenger platform.

Developers will be able to add AR camera effects to their messenger bot. The idea is to enable to creation of interactive AR experiences that can be useful to customers.

Several businesses have already been experimenting with AR technology as a means to help customers get a better feel of a product, compared to what is possible with only a flat, static photo. The integration of this technology into Facebook Messenger means this service is easier to offer to consumers.

In addition, if you want a second opinion from a friend on a particular product, or you have seen something you know a family member will love, the AR effects can be shared via Messenger, so users can create a more social experience when choosing a product.

The Messenger AR effects are currently in closed Beta, featuring commercial partners ASU, Kia, Nike and Sephora. Some of the early examples of what the AR camera effects can do include a Nike shoe appearing on a plinth surrounded by velvet rope, where the user can view it from all angles and decide if it is the right shoe for them.

Another example involved a new shade of lipstick from Sephora, which users can use AR Face filters to try it on for themselves ad decide what makeup look best suits them. Similarly, ASUS will be offering an ‘unboxing’ experience with the ability to take a close look as certain phone functions and features.

There are over 300,000 active bots on the Messenger platform, with over 8 Billion messages exchanged between people and businesses every month. VRFocus will continue to bring you the latest on how business is being changed by immersive technology such as AR.

Today at #F8 we are excited to launch AR Camera Effects for the Messenger Platform and built-in NLP integration with Page inbox. Check out the full announcement for more details. https://fb.me/F82018Messenger

To view the 360-degree photo, tap on it to open ti and then simply drag the image around or move your device to enjoy the new immersive media directly in Facebook Messenger.

The new 360-degree photos in Facebook Messenger are available all over the world for both iOS and Android users.
