‘Dragon Front’ Goes Mobile: Gear VR Hands On And Rift Crossplay Impressions

Dragon Front is a collectible card battling game that is played entirely in virtual reality. It carries similar DNA to other online trading card games such as Hearthstone, and it is currently in an open beta for the Oculus Rift and Gear VR. We’ve previously covered the general rules of the game and provided a detailed hands on with the PC version. But at Oculus Connect 3 we had the chance to try out the mobile Gear VR version to see how it compares and how multi-platform crossplay functions between the two headsets.

Upon booting up Dragon Front on your Samsung Gear VR the first thing you’ll notice is that it looks remarkably similar to the full Rift release. No significant assets were stripped out or lost in the translation process and this applies to the card battles themselves as well.

Battles in Dragon Front were designed from the beginning to be playable on both systems easily, according to representatives from creator High Voltage Studios.

Anyone who has tried the game on PC will know that it can be played fully with just the Oculus remote and its limited number of buttons. This streamlined gameplay design means that the Gear VR’s built in headset touchpad is more than sufficient to control a game that on the surface may seem mechanically complex.

The only real inputs you will need on Dragon Front for Gear VR are gaze aiming, tap selection, and a simple up-swipe on the pad if you wish to bring up a specific cards stats and abilities. Almost every action in this very strategic system can be accomplished using just those basic inputs. This makes Gear VR feel like Dragon Front‘s true home. The short games and pick up and play mentality fit naturally on a mobile platform and even the online matchmaking doesn’t skip a beat.

While on the show floor, two of our writers were able to play a complete match of Dragon Front online with one on the Rift and the other on a Gear VR. The experience flowed beautifully with no loss in performance, frame drops, or other forms of lag on either end. The game’s ancillary functions, such as the head avatars that reflect each player’s movements, also remained intact.

There are some notable losses in graphical fidelity on Dragon Front for Gear VR. The most notable of these is the absence of parallax for the card art. On Gear VR the card illustrations are flat whereas on the Rift they are given a pleasing sense of depth.

According to High Voltage, “parallax was the first thing to go but the entire process was a constant battle for performance. We’ve done everything we can and explored every possible creative solution to get Dragon Front running on Gear VR with as little drop off from the Rift as possible.”

The inclusion of this additional platform should mean for quicker matchmaking and more varied play styles, which is important for a title that depends so heavily on multiplayer.

Bot the Gear VR and the Oculus Rift versions of Dragon Front are currently in an open beta that you can sign up for today.

Dragon Front Open Beta Launches Today

Last month VRFocus reported on developer High Voltage Software launching a closed beta for its upcoming card battler Dragon Front. The videogame has made an appearance today on the keynote address for Oculus Connect 3, with the company announcing the Dragon Front beta is open to anyone who wishes to try it on Oculus Rift or Gear VR.

Immersing players in a diesel-punk, fantasy world Dragon Front features 280 characters, 80 different encampments, and more than 100 spells among four thematically diverse armies with which to do battle.

As spells are cast, minions summoned and fortifications built, they are all fully rendered onto an immersive battlefield for players to watch as their card choices are played out. Watch as mobile squads, rampaging giants, intimidating war machines, soaring projectiles, fire-breathing dragons and much more battle it out for supremacy.

As Dragon Front is still in beta players need to be aware that bugs and glitches will still be present until the title fully launches. But joining the beta is completely free for Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR users, and anyone that joined in the closed beta will be able to continue in the open one. High Voltage Software has stated in a blog posting that any progress or purchases made during the beta phase will carry over to the full title, so there’s no need to hold back. For Gear VR users the studio has also said: “Board Health is toggled to “gaze only” to extend your playtime. Adjusting this setting may affect your device’s thermal performance.

“S6 users: please note that we locked the game to 30 fps during the Open Beta for thermal performance reasons ensuring longer game sessions. We plan to continue to improve and optimize the game for S6 devices.”

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Dragon Front, reporting back with any further announcements.

Now the studio has announced it’ll be accepting sign-ups for the closed beta build from tomorrow (2nd September).

High Voltage and Oculus Studios are collaborating on Dragon Front which the two announced back in February 2016. Immersing players in a world of diesel-punk high-fantasy where each spell cast, minion summoned, and fortification built is rendered in a fully-immersive battleground, the title features 280 characters, 80 different encampments, and more than 100 spells among four thematically diverse armies. Dragon Front allows opponents to challenge each other face-to-face with head-tracking and Voice Over IP on a 4×4 grid. As players engage in war the battle field comes battlefield alive with mobile squads, rampaging giants, intimidating war machines, soaring projectiles, fire-breathing dragons and much more.

Earlier in the year VRFocus caught up with Keith Hladik, Producer, High Voltage at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2016 to get further details of the project.

Dragon Front is scheduled to launch later this year but High Voltage hasn’t yet confirmed a solid date. As VRFocus learns more about Dragon Front we’ll report straight back.

Get Access to High Voltage’s Dragon Front Beta When You Buy Damaged Core For Oculus Rift

It was reported not too long ago that Damaged Core, developed by High Voltage, was to release yesterday. Along with this release it was also announced that consumers would also get access to the beta build of High Voltage’s upcoming collectible card game (CCG), Dragon Front.

Not much was shared before about Damaged Core, but in the latest Oculus blog post there is much more detail, and the concept might be something that sparks interest for its unique twist. The title is a first person shooter (FPS) where the player takes the role of a human-friendly AI where they can teleport into enemy robots and effectively self destruct them, following a hostile machine uprising.

The title is described as “well-paced”, where it offers a balance of risk and reward. As you take over your enemies, you must take them down and jump to safety before you yourself are taken down.

Dragon Front, however, is a completely different kind of title, but it is still High Voltage working with Oculus Studios, so this partnership seems to be much more deeply set than a one-title partnership. This CCG lets players battle it out against each other where all that matters is skill level and how well their units perform when they come to life. There are boss battles between players and competitive leader boards, and players can choose from 280 characters, 80 different encampments, and more than 100 spells.

However, time’s running out as this offer for Dragon Front is only available during its launch week, which will finish on 6th September at 11.59 PT. Damaged Core is available for the Oculus Rift for $29.99 (USD).
