AR/VR Studio Dark Slope Pivots to Immersive Learning Amid Fresh Funding Round

The Toronto-based AR/VR developer Dark Slope today announced it’s closed a bridge funding round with multiple investors which brings the company’s total funding to $2.75 million. This coincides with a pivot away from location-based VR entertainment towards immersive VR learning.

The completion of the funding round is also putting Dark Slope co-founder Raja Khanna into the role of CEO. Raja was the CEO of Television & Digital at global content and media company Blue Ant Media, and was co-founder of technology company QuickPlay Media, which was acquired by AT&T in 2016.

QuickPlay co-founder Kavi Maharajh is signing on as Chief Product Officer responsible for the building of Involve XR, Dark Slope’s new immersive learning platform. Maharajh was also a VP at AT&T and SVP at Full Screen Media.

Involve XR is said to allow learners to “access realistic 3D spaces and objects to learn, observe, practise and apply skills.” Users are able to access the platform via VR headsets, AR on mobile devices, or desktop.

Founded in 2018, Dark Slope’s initial $1.5 million seed round brought along with it a content deal which saw the creation of a location-based VR game using Nathan Jurevicius’ graphic novel Scarygirl (2009) as its basis.

Called Scarygirl Mission Maybee, the multiplayer action game tasked players with saving the world from Dr. Maybee and his diabolical experiments, forcing players to cooperate in order to rid the world of Dr. Maybee’s infectious goo, purify it and “blast it back at the hordes of creatures infesting the world.”

It seems Dark Slope has since wound down its location-based ambitions in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The company most recently launched a multiplayer smartphone-based AR game for AT&T called Trick Shot Kings in March of this year.

The company says it will continue to fundraise to support its pivot towards immersive learning and has already begun to confirm substantial partnerships in support of the product build.

Zero Latency To Feature Dark Slope’s ‘Scarygirl Mission Maybee’ VR Experience

Toronto-based Dark Slope is bringing its surreal VR experience, Scarygirl Mission Maybee, to Zero Latency locations across the globe. This will be one of the first VR experiences to launch on the second-generation of Zero Latency’s platform using HP’s Microsoft VR headsets and tracking systems.

Scarygirl is developed from the ground-up with VR in mind and, despite the ominous name, is actually designed for all ages in a large-scale multiplayer free-roam environment. The experience is based on the cult hit graphic novel, Scarygirl, by artist Nathan Jurevicius, for up to eight players. A video game based on the property was also released back in 2012 for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

It’s a collaborative experience that requires players to work together and “suck up” hazardous goo and fight back hordes of nasty creatures.

Notably, this is the first third-party piece of content that Zero Latency will feature at its locations. Up until now, all of the content on offer had been developed in-house by Zero Latency directly — such as zombie shooter Outbreak Origins and competitive PvP shooter Sol Raiders. Scarygirl will debut at all Zero Latency locations that support the second-generation Microsoft-powered tracking platform.

In addition to working with Zero Latency, Dark Slope, the creators of Scarygirl, recently emerged from stealth to announce a seed funding round of over $1.5 million to aid in development of additional free-roam VR experiences. The company has a 3,000 square-foot motion capture stage in its Toronto-based studio.

Dark Slope’s Scarygirl Mission Maybee is Coming to Zero Latency

Earlier last month location-based entertainment (LBE) specialist Dark Slope left stealth and announced its debut virtual reality (VR) title Scarygirl Mission Maybee. Today, the studio has revealed a collaboration with Zero Latency to bring the experience to all of its free-roaming VR locations worldwide.

Dark Slope

Based on the cult hit graphic novel and designer toy brand Scarygirl from acclaimed artist Nathan Jurevicius, Scarygirl Mission Maybee is a first-person shooter (FPS) designed for up to eight people. They need to work together to suck up infectious hazardous goo and blast a purified antidote back at the hordes of infected creatures swarming the neon-rich virtual world.

Scarygirl Mission Maybee will be one of the first videogames to be distributed via Zero Latency’s second-generation platform developed in tandem with technology giants Microsoft, HP, and Intel.

“Zero Latency’s next-generation VR platform is shaping up to be an incredible next step in LBE VR, making it the perfect partner to help distribute our debut title, Scarygirl Mission Maybee,” said CJ Hervey president and co-founder at Dark Slope in a statement. “The world of Scarygirl is magical, immersive, and exciting to audiences of all ages, there is no better way to experience it than in warehouse scale VR.”

Scarygirl

“We deliver the greatest free-roam virtual reality experiences available in the world today” said Tim Ruse, CEO of Zero Latency. “Dark Slope’s Scarygirl Mission Maybee is the perfect addition to our library of VR experiences and will pair extremely well with our next gen VR platform.”

Up until now, most of Zero Latency’s content has been purely first-party, with Dark Slope being the first third-party developer to provide content. Zero Latency has 29 locations in 18 countries with the company distributing Scarygirl Mission Maybee to all locations that support its second-generation platform.

Alongside leaving stealth and releasing Scarygirl Mission Maybe, Dark Slope revealed it managed to close a seed funding round securing over $1.5 million. Head on over to Zero Latency’s website to see all the videogames available and the exact locations and prices. VRFocus will continue its coverage of Zero Latency, reporting back with the latest updates.

Dark Slope Secures $1.5M to Bring Location-based VR to Toronto

Dark Slope, a Toronto-based VR/AR developer, today announced the studio has secured $1.5 million in seed funding, which will support the launch of its first location-based VR game Scarygirl Mission Maybee.

Based on Nathan Jurevicius’ graphic novel Scarygirl (2009) and the various console & PC games that followed, Scarygirl Mission Maybee is a first-person action game that tasks players with saving the world from Dr. Maybee and his diabolical experiments. Players must cooperate in order to rid the world of Dr. Maybee’s infectious goo, purify it and “blast it back at the hordes of creatures infesting the world.”

The experience accommodates between 4-8 player, and takes place in an untethered, 60’ × 30’ room-scale space (~18m × 9m). The company appears to be using modified Oculus Rift headsets in conjunction with a custom optical tracking setup, and HP backpack computers to allow for the fully-tetherless experience.
