Coming to PlayStation VR This Week: Creed, Dark Eclipse & The Grand Museum VR

Last week saw quite the selection of virtual reality (VR) videogames come to PlayStation VR, with the likes of Ubisoft’s  Transferencedark puzzle experience Blind and Downward Spiral: Horus Station all making their mark. This week isn’t quite as bountiful but there are still some worthwhile titles to be had.

Creed: Rise to Glory

The big launch this week is actually a multiplatform experience, Creed: Rise to Glory by Sprint Vector developer Survios. This is one VRFocus has been looking forward to, as it may just offer the best boxing mechanics yet in a VR title. You’ll play as young startup Adonis Creed, looking to make his way up the ranks and become a champion in his own right. To this end you’ll be able to train and build up your skills in a story-driven Career mode, training in iconic gyms and fighting some tough combatants.

Alongside the single-player career players will also be able to go head-to-head in a cross-platform PvP mode, showcasing their VR boxing talents to the world. And there’s an appearance by the great Rocky Balboa.

For those after a VR fighting experience that’s a lot less energetic then there’s always Dark Eclipse. This is classic  multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) fighting, where players command a team of three leaders – chosen from a roster of 15 available characters – each with their own unique characteristics and abilities. Gameplay will involve a drag-and-drop control system which combines real-time strategy (RTS) mechanics with the action of a MOBA.

Lastly, for a far more casual and educational experience there’s The Grand Museum VR. Having previously launched on Steam over the summer this virtual museum environment contains 82 models of real-world ancient works of art, originating from many ancient cultures of Europe, Asia and Northern Africa. The app allows users to investigate the archives and discover the history of the art pieces.

Should any other VR videogames make an appearance this week, VRFocus will let you know.

VR MOBA Dark Eclipse Unveils Release Date

Though a familiar name to videogame fans who remember the 80s and early 90s, Japanese developer SUNSOFT have not been seen much outside Asia in the past few years. As part of the company’s celebrations of its 40th Year of operation, the company is returning to Europe and North America with the upcoming release of its virtual reality (VR) title Dark Eclipse.

Dark Eclipse is due to be released on PlayStation VR globally on 25th September, 2018 where it will be available as a free-to-play title compatible with both DualShock 4 and PlayStation Move controllers.

The developers have aimed to bring the core elements of a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) while offering a new twist on some of the typical conventions of the genre. Dark Eclipse is described as a fast-paced, one-on-one battle where players need to overcome an opponent’s team of three’ leaders’ which are chosen from a roster of 15 available characters.

As expected of a MOBA, each character has its own mix of skills and abilities and will also have access to supporting ‘soldiers’ that can be ordered to attack by the player. Gameplay will involve what SUNSOFT believes is an intuitive drag-and-drop control system which combines real-time strategy (RTS) mechanics with the action of a MOBA.

“With 40-years in the business, we’ve seen many gaming trends come and go, but few have been as exhilarating as VR’s expansion and mainstream acceptance,” said Shohei Sakakibara, Producer and Project Leader at SUNSOFT. “Everyone at SUNSOFT is enamored with this type of quick, strategic, multiplayer gameplay, so we brought our passion for the genre and combined the best characteristics of VR, MOBAs and RTS games into Dark Eclipse, a game that’s both familiar and eye-catchingly innovative.”

SUNSOFT are planning on introducing regular, free updates to the title, which will add new Leader characters and regularly re-tuning the gameplay balance. For future coverage of Dark Eclipse and other upcoming VR titles, keep checking back with VRFocus.

Sunsoft Sheds Some Light On PlayStation VR MOBA

‘The world has been engulfed in darkness, the people called this the Dark Eclipse.’ Thus begins the journey for would-be heroes and adventurers in DARK ECLIPSE, the first real-time strategy multiplayer online battle videogame (RTS-MOBA) for the PlayStation VR and one that will let you get hands-on with controlling your characters.

Dark Eclipse screenshotDARK ECLIPSE pits players against others who match their skill level in a battle to see who is the best. Developer Sunsoft has included a Rank Mode specifically for this purpose with an initial 1-vs-1 mode at launch, but after that switching focus to adding 2-vs-2, and adding more of a teamwork dynamic to the title. The development team have even indicated that 3-vs-3 matches are a possibility for the future.

VRFocus sat down with two members of the production team at Sunsoft to discuss the latest as to what’s going on with the title – Producer Shohei Sakakibara and Senior Programmer Bill Hung, and they revealed that initially things didn’t start all that well with development.

“So, at the beginning we wanted to create a very ‘core’ game.” Explains Hung, translating for Sakakibara. “And then when we tried it out we’d come up with something that was quite boring, and we kind of changed our thinking and fixed it. Made it more fun.”

Dark Eclipse character art“VR is almost like [swiping a phone in a game and the action being the ‘fun’ part] right now. There’s a lot of VR games out there that [are] interesting – but it’s not the VR part that is interesting. We need to make a game that the game is interesting.”

The team were keen to stress how much better controls in VR are for this time of videogame. “In terms of eSports, in VR – when you’re using VR, the move contols in this game vs on PC using mouse and keyboard the control is much easier and more intuitive compared to the PC.”

You can check out the interview in full, as well as see the title in action, in the video below. VRFocus will, of course, bring you more news on DARK ECLIPSE and Sunsoft’s future development plans as soon as we hear more.

PlayStation VR’s Upcoming MOBA Title Dark Eclipse Gets English Trailer

At the recent PlayStation Experience this month Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) had a few choice PlayStation VR titles on show for the first time. One of which was SunSoft’s Dark Eclipsea multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) experience that was first unveiled during the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2017. The title has been confirmed for an American release in Spring 2018, and for those keen to see more a new English trailer has been made.

Dark Eclipse screenshot

As the trailer details, players will be able to choose three characters (Leaders) from a roster of over 20 to control in battle, from demonic looking creatures like Zoif, Laaila, Dosmelda and Ejin, to more classic style heroes like Aska and Sakura. Unlike normal MOBA titles where players have to flip between their location in an arena and a mini-map for a wider view of the combat, in Dark Eclipse it’s all handled in one view, so there’s no mini-map.

Battles are won by either defeating an opponents leaders or destroying their base. Along the way they’ll have fortifications to destroy and you’ll be able to build your own as well.

SunSoft revealed more gameplay details to VRFocus last month, so Dark Eclipse will feature two online gameplay modes: Rank Mode and eSport. At launch there will be a focus on 1-vs-1 mode, with Sunsoft adding 2-vs-2, and eventually incorporating 3-vs-3 matches.

There will be tutorials and a practice mode in Dark Eclipse so that players new to the genre can fight against A.I. bots, building up their skill level and knowledge before heading online. There will be rewards as players gain more experience, carrying forward regardless of solo, casual mode or rank mode. Additionally, players will have the option to use one or two PlayStation Move controllers, or a DualShock 4, or a combination of both.

PlayStation VR Exclusive Dark Eclipse Gameplay Details Revealed

Sunsoft recently confirmed to VRFocus that the forthcoming PlayStation VR exclusive MOBA, Dark Eclipse, would make its western playable debut at PlayStation Experience this month. Following this, the publisher has offered some brand new details on exactly how attendees – and eventually players around the world – will play the videogame.

Dark Eclipse screenshot

Dark Eclipse is a videogame designed for online play. You will need to react to other players’ tactics as there is no sure-win strategy, requiring adaptation to each situation. The pace of the videogame allows you to think strategically in terms of when to attack or defend. Two online gameplay modes will be included: Rank Mode and eSport.

Designed to be a competitive videogame, like all great MOBAs before it, Dark Eclipse will pit skilled players against others who match their skill level. Rank Mode is intended specifically for this; filtering out the weaker players to enable the stronger players to battle against one another. At launch there will be a focus on 1-vs-1 mode, but moving forward Sunsoft will add 2-vs-2, and the dynamic of the game will start to require teamwork. Eventually, the team want to incorporate 3-vs-3 matches.

“We don’t want to jump into a situation where there are not enough players in-game at any given time, and we don’t want to have people waiting for a long time for a match,” stated a representative of Sunsoft. “In short, first claim victory with your own wit, going solo and no need to worry about guild partners or leechers. Then look forward to team-vs-team gameplay in a major release after launch.

“We deeply understand the excitement of team-vs-team dynamic. Looking at MOBAs on mobile phones, it’s easy to get a list of games with 5 vs 5 players. But is that the answer for VR MOBA? We are taking steps to find out. The multiplayer online battle experience we want, doesn’t necessarily means 5 vs 5 players, especially when one player has to control three characters in game. We will keep iterating and evolve the game. Finally, there wouldn’t be eSports if there are no spectators. For that, we have been prototyping a spectator mode, and that will be released in an update after launch.”

Dark Eclipse screenshot

In addition to the multiplayer gameplay modes, Dark Eclipse will also include the option to play solo, offline. There are practice mode and tutorials, as well as a mode for player vs A.I. bots. There will be rewards as players gain more experience, and once you reach the highest experience level you will be prepared to take on other live players.

One of the unique mechanics of Dark Eclipse is the ability to control three characters on the battlefield simultaneously. Originally Sunsoft experimented with having one player controlling up to five characters, however during playtesting the team found that three felt good. A range of characters are planned for the videogame, including human-like characters called the Heroes and monster-like characters called the Dominators. There are over 20 characters planned for launch.

With regards to input systems, Dark Eclipse will support both PlayStation Move and DualShock 4 controllers. A virtual hand will be present on-screen, with a trigger press used to grab objects and interact with the UI.

“When we were thinking of VR interaction in VR, the first thing that we tried was point-and-click and point-and-teleport interactions. Although that worked, we were left thinking what if the interaction can be more like real life where you just grab with your hands. I mean, in real life, if you want to move an object in front of you, you just grab it and move the object with your hand. Our locomotion also uses the position of the motion controller to move yourself in-game. Unlike VR shooting games, you do not extend your arms to aim. The game is paced so that you move casually as if you are lighting a candle slowly. You can play the game standing up or sitting down. We designed the game with rest period between matches, so you can rest your body if needed.”

Dark Eclipse screenshot

Sunsoft are hoping for an enduring audience in Dark Eclipse, suggesting that over 1,000 hours of gameplay will be available due to the varied combinations of playable characters available. Each match will typically last between 10 and 30 minutes.

“We play a lot of MOBA games, the thrill of triple-kill, diving under the tower to chase a kill, ganking on an unsuspecting opponent, getting that power buff, pushing towers towards the enemy base, receiving cheers from spectators,” stated a representative of Sunsoft. “We want to bring all these game elements into VR. We like VR, and we want to have a game for people to play for hundreds of hours. Wouldn’t it be nice if we can have a MOBA+RTS game in VR where we can just play for many hours? That’s why we have Dark Eclipse, a game for gamers like us.”

Dark Eclipse will be coming to America in Spring 2018, with the first English language playable demo set to be available at PlayStation Experience 2017. VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details on Dark Eclipse and other forthcoming VR titles from Sunsoft.

Dark Eclipse PSVR MOBA

Sunsoft to Bring VR MOBA Dark Eclipse to PlayStation Experience

Sunsoft, a Japanese publisher of videogames for more than 40 years, is set to make its western virtual reality (VR) debut at the PlayStation Experience, Anaheim, later this month. The company will be bringing Dark Eclipse, a VR-exclusive MOBA which debuted at Tokyo Game Show earlier this year, to the show, playable outside of Japan for the first time.

Dark Eclipse screenshot

Dark Eclipse is a MOBA videogame developed specifically for VR platforms; players are immersed in the real-time action without traditional boundary of a 2D screen. The videogame will feature a roster of 20 characters, called Leaders, from which players will choose three to take into battle as they build towers and destroy the enemy base. Developed by a team of MOBA and RTS videogame lovers, Dark Eclipse is designed to offer a new MOBA era in the VR age.

Dark Eclipse was originally confirmed for a western release back in September 2017. The videogame was showcased at the Tokyo Game Show and subsequently Sunsoft issued a tweet to VRFocus confirming that Dark Eclipse would launch in America in 2018. No specific release date has yet been mentioned, nor has there yet been any confirmation of a European release, however the publisher has since updated their target for launch as ‘Spring 2018’.

Sunsoft, an arm of Sun Electronics Corporation, was founded in 1971. Originally working with the likes of Acclaim and SEGA to port titles across various formats, Sunsoft found success in the early 90s with a portfolio of titles including Aero the Acrobat, World Heroes and various licensed titles including Batman, Looney Tunes and Gremlins across a range of arcade cabinets and home consoles. More recently the publisher has made a significant investment in Nintendo Switch, with an entry in the popular Blaster Master series and a port of Waku Waku 7.

Dark Eclipse character artAt the time of confirming a western release to VRFocus, Sunsoft also offered an English language version of the debut trailer for the videogame, which can be seen below. Since then, the publisher has contacted VRFocus regarding hands-on opportunities at PlayStation Experience, set to take place in Anaheim, California, next month. VRFocus will of course keep you updated with all the latest details on Dark Eclipse and any other forthcoming VR titles from Sunsoft.

PlayStation VR MOBA Dark Eclipse Will Be Coming West

Sunsoft, the developer behind upcoming real-time strategy (RTS) and multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) title Dark Eclipse have confirmed that the title will be getting a release in the West as well as a Japanese release.

The RTS/MOBA hybrid was showcased at the Tokyo Game Show over the weekend. Dark Eclipse is set to feature a roster of over 20 colourful characters, from those, the player can choose a team of three to send into battle against enemy forces. The aim is to force enemy heroes to retire from battle, capture territory and, ultimately, destroy the enemy base.

Developer Sunsoft confirmed on Twitter that the title would indeed be getting a release in North America in 2018. An English version of the trailer was also unveiled. The Japanese version is also due for release in 2018, a firm release date and price point have yet to be confirmed.

MOBA titles such as League of Legends and Overwatch are extremely popular, but have largely yet to make the jump to virtual reality (VR), possibly due to the relatively small install base for VR hardware. RTS titles, meanwhile have seen something of a resurgence on VR platforms. Sunsoft are confident that the intuitive control scheme and RTS elements will entire users to try the VR MOBA.

You can watch the English trailer for Dark Eclipse below.

VRFocus will bring you further news on Dark Eclipse as it becomes available.
