Watch: Cook-Out Is Basically Overcooked On Quest & Rift

Resolution Games released the first teaser trailer for their upcoming cooperative VR game ‘Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale‘, coming to Oculus Quest and Rift platforms.

The trailer starts off with showing three prominent Swedish chefs, including, amazingly, the winner of MasterChef Sweden 2020, in a hectic real-life kitchen before briefly switching to some gameplay.

Cook-Out was first announced back in February without any details beyond a description and some key art for the game, which is set to release later this year.

The game will let you play with up to four people in total and is designed as a cooperative experience. It will still be playable solo, but Resolution Games said that you’ll paired with a ‘simulated partner’ if you do choose to go at it alone.

“Not only will you be preparing meals, but you’ll need to fight off a number of nasty customers who seem absolutely set on making trouble — like jesters who will hide parts of your orders, or thieves who will keep pilfering your ingredients,” said game producer Gustav Stenmark. “We’ve designed Cook-Out to be played with a team — and believe me, you’re going to need all the help you can get in this kitchen!”

As we’ve said before, the description of the game gives off a bit of an ‘Overcooked in VR’ vibe, and the brief snippets of gameplay shown here definitely reinforce that. However, that’s not necessarily a bad thing — working cooperatively with friends in a frantic virtual kitchen to prepare and serve meals to troublesome customers sounds stressful but also, hopefully, very fun.

Cook-Out is set to release on Oculus Quest and Rift platforms later this year, with ‘additional platforms to come’.

Veteran Developer Behind Nox & Left 4 Dead Joins Resolution Games

Resolution Games has quite the virtual reality (VR) catalogue under its belt, such as Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs and Acron: Attack of the SquirrelsToday, the company has announced that to help steer its next-generation of gaming experiences videogame veteran Mike Booth will be joining the studios’ board of directors.

While you may not have heard of Booth you’ll have likely played one of his titles. His first was Nox created back when he was in college. He went onto found Turtle Rock Studios, the team behind Left 4 Dead and Counter-Strike: Condition Zero. His career has also seen him work on the original Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike (Xbox), Counter-Strike: Source, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Team Fortress 2, Command & Conquer: Generals and Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2.

He then moved into VR back in 2016 joining Facebook as creative director exploring social VR, and how people can connect and share their experiences.

“What drew me to Resolution Games is the team’s passion and dedication to creating innovative and immersive gameplay in what’s proving to be an incredibly powerful, yet still somewhat challenging technology,” said Booth in a statement. “I’ve seen Tommy [Palm, CEO of Resolution Games] and his team create diverse, high-quality content that pushes the boundaries of what is possible while bringing new people into gaming, which is a very hard thing to do. I’m looking forward to working with this talented group and navigating this field together, even moving beyond the studio’s usual genres to really push the boundaries of what can be done in games.”

Acron: Attack of the Squirrels“I’ve been playing games that Mike created for decades, and we’re so excited to add this legend not only to our board but also as a hands-on creative advisor to our teams as we bring our games to market,” said Tommy Palm, CEO of Resolution Games. “At Resolution Games, we know that in order to make the best games, you need the best and most creative minds. Having Mike join our team and share in our vision as we venture into a more hardcore games space will ensure we are creating the best possible experiences.”

Booth is said to be taking a hands-on approach in his new role, helping across several titles still to be announced. He’ll also help with the newly revealed Cook-Out: A Sandwich TaleAs Resolution Games reveals further development details, VRFocus will let you know.

Co-op VR Cooking Game ‘Cook-out: A Sandwich Tale’ Coming to Rift & Quest This Year

Resolution Games, the Stockholm-based studio behind Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs (2019), Bait! (2016) and Acron: Attack of the Squirrels! (2019), today unveiled a short slice of gameplay for its next multiplayer VR game, Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale.

Update (May 14th, 2020): Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale is slated to arrive on Oculus Quest and Rift sometime this year, Resolution says. Additional platforms are said to arrive at a later point.

Resolution says the game will be set within the cook’s cabin of a fairytale forest, where four players are tasked with communicating and working together to keep the game’s hungry cast of enchanted creatures happy.

Co-op play is the main focus, however solo players will have the opportunity to play with AI cooking partners.

The game’s avatars appear to be the same you can create in Oculus Home, which possibly means user will be able to bring their own user-built avatars from Home.

Original Article (February 21st, 2020): Info is still thin on the ground—no trailer or in-game images are available yet—however Resolution says that in Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale, players “cook their way through a wacky and whimsical adventure that requires collaboration and communication to keep the customers happy and progress through increasingly hectic levels.”

Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale is slated to release on VR headsets later this year. It’s uncertain what platforms the studio is targeting, although the setup sounds awfully similar to Acron: Attack of the Squirrels!, which pits one VR player against local non-VR players on mobile devices (that’s just conjecture, folks). Acron: Attack of the Squirrels! supports Quest and PC VR, so it’s possible we’ll see similar level of support here as well.

At the time of this writing, Resolution has set up an email notification form, likely to gauge user interest, that lists the following devices: Rift, Vive, Quest, PSVR, and Windows MR.

“We’ve clearly seen that as VR’s popularity is increasing it is also becoming more and more of a medium for unique social experiences that can bring people together like never before,” said Tommy Palm, CEO of Resolution Games. “We feel that Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale will be a great illustration of how players can have a ton of fun when they work together in VR – especially given the frantic environment of a busy restaurant kitchen.”

So maybe a VR version of Overcooked? We’ll be keeping our eye on the game’s website for more info in the coming weeks.

‘Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale’ Is Resolution Games’ New Multiplayer VR Title

Resolution Games announced their next VR title today — Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale.

Resolution is the studio behind Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs, Bait! and Acron: Attack of the Squirrels, This new game will require VR-based multiplayer cooperation to “cook their way through a wacky and whimsical adventure that requires collaboration and communication to keep the customers happy and progress through increasingly hectic levels.”

In a prepared statement, Resolution Games CEO Tommy Palm said VR “is becoming more and more of a medium for unique social experiences that can bring people together like never before. We feel that Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale will be a great illustration of how players can have a ton of fun when they work together in VR — especially given the frantic environment of a busy restaurant kitchen.”

Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale will be the fourth VR title from Resolution Games and looks to be the first that is fully VR-only multiplayer. While one of Resolution’s previous titles, Acron: Attack of the Squirrels, was a multiplayer party game, it was an asymmetric VR game — meaning the players used both VR and non-VR devices to play at the same time, such as having one user in a headset while the others performed actions on a smartphone.

So it sounds like we could be getting a frantic VR kitchen game in a similar vein to the Overcooked series. There’s no exact release window besides ‘later this year’, nor is there any word on specific release platforms either. That being said, Resolution Games’ previous titles are available across a range of VR platforms, so it seems fair to expect similar support for Cook-Out.

The title will be another multiplayer experience much like Acron, where players have to communicate and work together in a hectic kitchen environment.

“We’ve clearly seen that as VR’s popularity is increasing it is also becoming more and more of a medium for unique social experiences that can bring people together like never before,” said Tommy Palm, CEO of Resolution Games in a statement. “We feel that Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale will be a great illustration of how players can have a ton of fun when they work together in VR – especially given the frantic environment of a busy restaurant kitchen.”

At the moment more specific details aren’t available such as how many players Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale will support, whether it’ll be purely local or include an online feature and what VR headsets the studio plans on supporting. In terms of what the videogame will look like Resolution Games has only released the top logo image. So there are plenty of details to come. One thing VRFocus was told was that it’ll be a 2020 release. With the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2020 event taking place in March further information will likely arrive then.

Glimt Teaser

VR manufacturers and developers have long battled with the assumption from those outside of the industry that VR is antisocial because you put a headset on. There have been several good examples from both videogames and apps as to why VR offers a new kind of social activity. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes was an early example of local interaction while AltspaceVR offers an online community. In 2020 the likes of Somnium Space 2.0 and the to be released Facebook Horizon both offer visions of the future.

When Resolution Games release further details regarding Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale, VRFocus will let you know.
