Bigscreen’s Latest Free Movies Celebrate Black History Month

Bigscreen SELMA

Last month Bigscreen rolled out ad-supported, free-to-watch movies via PlutoTV, supporting the platform’s growing demand for new, accessible content. With Black History Month beginning today in the US, Bigscreen is rolling out a new category to celebrate black cinema.

Bigscreen SELMA

Just like it did during last summer, Bigscreen is hosting a live screening of Ava DuVernay’s critically acclaimed film, Selma to mark the launch today. Kicking off at 7 pm PT/10 pm ET (3 am GMT 2nd Feb), Selma tells the story of how Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a three-month march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965. The film then can be rented on-demand for $3.99 in the US or $4.99 in Canada.

As for the rest, here are all the free new movies in Bigscreen’s ‘Black Cinema’ category:

  • St. Louis Superman
  • I Am Not Your Negro
  • Night Catches Us
  • Southside With You
  • Silverrain
  • The Pruitt-Igoe Myth
  • Broken Ceiling
  • The Long Walk Home
  • Mandela
  • Sincerely, Brenda
  • For Ahkeem
  • Muhammad Ali Life of a Legend
  • Cover
  • Jackie Brown

Additionally, Bigscreen’s free to watch category has also been updated with new blockbusters like Memento and The King’s Speech. Like all of the movies available through the platform, these latest editions won’t be available in every territory.

Bigscreen continues to be free to download, supporting headsets including HTC Vive, Valve Index, Windows Mixed Reality, Oculus Rift, Oculus Go and Oculus Quest. For all the latest updates, keep reading VRFocus.

Watch Awesome Films for Free as Bigscreen Introduces Ads

Bigscreen

Everyone likes free content but for companies to make money they need revenue from somewhere, which usually tends to revolve around advertising. Today, Bigscreen is rolling out a new update so that users have the option to watch ad-supported, free-to-watch movies.

Bigscreen

Bigscreen has been providing paid movie rentals for a little over a year now, partnering with studios like Paramount Pictures and Funimation. If you don’t mind the odd ad then you can now enjoy Arrival, Seabiscuit, Clueless, Nacho Libre, Adventureland, Blair Witch, Paranormal Activity 4, It Follows, and more for free.

All the free movies are hosted on Pluto.TV featuring ads from PlutoTV. The service is only available in the US at the moment, with Bigscreen confirming more films will be added each month. The other difference between these free movies and the rental ones is that Bigscreen’s paid service includes 3D movies.

The app has been ramping up its content output of late by expanding its Bigscreen TV feature last week with more than 172 free TV channels available. In a statement the company also mentioned: “We plan to integrate more streaming services in the future, we’re actively working on built-in YouTube support next.”

Bigscreen

Currently, features like the TV channels are hosted in public rooms but Bigscreen is developing a Friends System so that users can host their own, private rooms. Other tech in the pipeline will enable large groups of people to stream ultra-low latency video in VR. PlayStation VR support is still ongoing.

You can download Bigscreen free of charge for Oculus Quest and Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. For further updates, keep reading VRFocus.

‘Bigscreen’ Launches Ad-supported Movies for Free On-demand Viewing

Bigscreen today announced is bringing ad-supported movies to the free social viewing platform, which will allow users to watch select films for free.

Bigscreen first brought paid on-demand movie rentals to its virtual cinemas early last year, which was the result of multiple partnerships with movie studios such as Paramount Pictures.

Now Bigscreen is bringing free movies hosted by PlutoTV, which much like their streaming TV content, will have intermittent ads sandwiched in between. A big difference between steaming TV and the new ad-supported film service is that films can be watched on-demand, and in any Bigscreen environment.

Film availability depends on your physical location, however Bigscreen says content coming to US-based users includes Arrival, Seabiscuit, Clueless, Nacho Libre, Adventureland, Blair Witch, Paranormal Activity 4, It Follows, “and more.” The studio says it’s adding new films each month.

“Bigscreen has added many integrations with streaming services over the past year, such as Twitch, PlutoTV, and Adult Swim,” the studio says. “We plan to integrate more streaming services in the future, [and] we’re actively working on built-in YouTube support next. As previously announced, we are also developing a Friends System and a new technology to enable large groups of people to stream ultra-low latency video in VR.”

The new ad-supported film is coming to all supported platforms today, which includes SteamVROculus RiftOculus Quest, and Oculus Go.

Bigscreen Now Has Free Moves (With Ads), YouTube Coming Soon

The latest addition to Bigscreen’s burgeoning roster of video content to share in VR? Free movies.

Today the social hub is launching a new series of movies that can be enjoyed with friends on the app’s virtual screens. The service already offers paid movie rentals but these free movies arrive through PlutoTV and will be ad-supported. They’re available to watch on-demand on the platform at any time.

The first wave of films includes the likes of Arrival, Nacho Libre, Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity 4. More films will be added to the service every month, too. For now the service is available in the United States. No word yet on a rollout to other countries.

And more services are on the way, too. Bigscreen told UploadVR that built-in YouTube support is being actively worked on and other streaming services will arrive in the future. Further down the line, we’ll also see a new Friends System and new options to stream video in VR at low latencies. Recently the app launched yet more channels that brought the likes of Rick and Morty and the Eric Andre show to VR.

Bigscreen’s focus on sharing 2D content with friends helps separate it from other social VR networks and has proved to be a key use of the technology over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. Back in 2020, we invited CEO Darshan Shankar onto the VR Download Podcast to talk VR privacy as Facebook doubled down on accounts for Quest.

‘Bigscreen’ Brings ‘Rick & Morty’, ‘The Eric Andre Show’ & More to Free TV Selection

Bigscreen, the social viewing platform for VR headsets, just launched a number of new free TV channels including Rick and Morty, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Samurai Jack, Robot Chicken, The Venture Bros, and The Eric Andre Show.

Bigscreen first added its TV livestream back in July 2019, which at the time brought over 50 channels to the free app. With its recent additions, users can now select from 172 channels—all of which are available for free in public rooms. Some channels are region-specific, but a majority can be viewed from anywhere.

“Today’s new TV channels all have an age restriction on it, requiring users to consent that they are 18 or older before entering,” the studio says in an update. “Bigscreen’s built-in Parental Controls also allow parents to prevent their children from entering any of these 18+ rooms, public rooms, or social situations.”

Besides being able to chat with others face-to-face, Bigscreen also lets users rent 3D movies, watch your own local media through its internal video player, and mirror your desktop into a room—letting you watch and share practically anything you want in VR.

The studio says there’s plenty of new features coming down the pipeline for 2021 too. A Friends System is still in the works along with built-in YouTube support, and the ability to make private TV-viewing rooms. The studio is also set to roll out new servers which it says will “dramatically improve the video/audio streaming quality.”

Something users have been asking for a while now is a Remote Desktop feature, which will allow you to stream your Windows desktop to Quest. Thankfully, that’s also slated to arrive sometime in 2021.

The update is now live across all supported platforms which includes SteamVR, Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, and Oculus Go.

New Bigscreen TV Channels Feature Rick And Morty, Eric Andre Show And More

Bigscreen announced that is is launching additional free TV channels today, featuring streams of popular shows such as Rick and Morty, The Eric Andre Show and more.

The new channels will join the ever-growing list of free TV streams available on Bigscreen as part of Bigscreen TV. These rooms use ad-supported public streams from sites such as YouTube and Twitch and play them in public social rooms, allowing users to join a public TV channel room and enjoy the show with the company of other users.

The new channels added today will be screening Rick and Morty, The Eric Andre Show, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Samurai Jack, Robot Chicken, The Venture Bros and many other shows. This brings the total number of free TV channels available on Bigscreen up to 172. The new channels  will also require users to confirm that they are over 18 years of age before entering the room.

Currently, TV channel streams are only available in public social rooms on Bigscreen. However, the developers noted that they are working on a feature that will soon allow users to bring up any of the free TV channels in their own private room as well, to be enjoyed alone or with friends.

Speaking of friends, the Bigscreen devs are also developing a friends system for the app that they expect to arrive sometime this year, alongside “new servers that dramatically improve the video/audio streaming quality, a new Remote Desktop feature with ultra-low latency desktop streaming to the Quest, and more!”

Things look set to be a big year for Bigscreen — the devs recently spoke about the impact of the Quest 2 launch on their app, stating it had a ‘massive’ knock-on effect.

Bigscreen Introduces Free Rick and Morty, Samurai Jack & Robot Chicken TV Channels

Bigscreen

Bigscreen launched its TV feature back in 2019, continually adding more features and content since then. Today, Bigscreen TV is expanding that roster of channels to cater to all viewers, especially if you enjoy animation.

Bigscreen

14 new channels have been introduced such as Rick and Morty, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Samurai Jack, Robot Chicken, The Venture Bros, and The Eric Andre Show. All in all, that means Bigscreen now has more than 172 free TV channels available.

If you’ve not tried the service yet Bigscreen doesn’t host these channels, instead, they’re free internet live streams from websites such as Twitch and YouTube. As such, the content is usually ad-supported and can be region-restricted, so it’s possible you won’t be able to access all the channels depending on where you live. These new channels require consent that users are 18 or older before entering with Parental Controls available so parents can stop their kids from accessing these areas.

All of Bigscreen TV’s channels are designed to be social experiences, so you can watch some of your favourite shows with other fans. Currently in development is the ability to host TV channels in private rooms. Bigscreen hasn’t said when this might become available.

Bigscreen TV Robot Chicken

There are more updates planned for Bigscreen during the course of 2021 including a Friends System, new servers that improve the video/audio streaming quality, and a new Remote Desktop feature with ultra-low latency desktop streaming to the Oculus Quest. When it comes to the long-awaited PlayStation VR port, that is still on the roadmap, but Bigscreen hasn’t settled on a date yet.

Alongside the TV channels, Bigscreen users can also rent 3D movies, watch their own video files using the Videoplayer, or use the app for its original purpose and stream a Windows desktop screen into a virtual room.

Bigscreen is free to download for HTC Vive, Valve Index, Windows Mixed Reality, Oculus Rift, and Oculus Quest. For further updates, keep reading  VRFocus.

Quest 2 ‘Massive’ For Bigscreen, Holiday Update Available Now

Bigscreen released a holiday update just before Christmas bringing new environments and features. Plus, the developers are seeing strong statistics and retention on Quest 2.

The biggest part of the update is the new drive-in theater environment, which the developers said was the #1 most requested feature from users.

In addition to the drive-in, the app has also been redesigned over the last few months and now features a brand new user interface. The developers say that the new UI should make it easier to discover new rooms and content, which is convenient as there’s also 60 new TV channels being added into Bigscreen in this update. The channels “including major crime-drama series such as Narcos and hilarious game shows like Wipeout.”

A new TV category called “To Infinity and Beyond” is also being added to Bigscreen for livestreams and re-runs of rocket launches. According to the developers, SpaceX launches are some of the largest social events in Bigscreen and VR in general, with thousands of people all watching at once.

bigscreen drive in

The developers also noted that the Quest 2 launch has been massive for Bigscreen and has meant that the team had to upgrade their servers. According to the developers, “core metrics are up 3-5x since October” and people are spending more time in the app than ever. “The average session is nearly an hour, and power users spend 20-30 hours every week in Bigscreen. Quest has become the most popular headset in Bigscreen’s userbase, followed by the Oculus Rift S, Valve Index, and HTC Vive.”

Thanks to the server upgrade, lobbies now support 12 people (up from 8) and the plan is for room size limits to increase up to 25 or even 50 people sometime next year.

With this update, Bigscreen is no longer supported on Oculus Go, as Facebook stopped accepting app updates for that headset as of December 4. The Oculus Go Bigscreen servers will be shut down “in the coming weeks.”

Next year, Bigscreen plans to ship several features, including “a friends system, new avatars, new environment, major improvements to our video streaming, a new ultra-low latency Remote Desktop feature and more.” PlayStation VR and Mac app support are both also “on the roadmap” but without a strict timeline.

Cyberpunk 2077 VR Support: Can You Play The Game In VR? [Updated]

After 8 long years of waiting, it’s finally here — CD Projekt RED’s sci-fi RPG Cyberpunk 2077 is finally here. But can you play the game in VR?

The short answer is no. The game does not currently have any form of VR support, but there are some alternatives.

Back in June, CDPR company president Adam Kiciński said that while rudimentary VR support would not be difficult to implement, there are some problems involved.

The issue becomes more challenging when we factor in game design. There are substantial changes which must be taken into account when working on a VR-specific product. Our current focus is on the PC and console editions of Cyberpunk, so we’re not moving in that direction right now.

So we’re not expecting any form of official VR support anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to play the game in VR using other methods. Similar to other open world games like GTA V, we’re expecting someone will eventually make a VR mod for Cyberpunk. Before then, you’ll still be able to play the PC version of the game in VR on a flatscreen display using an app like Bigscreen or Virtual Desktop. Alternatively, you can use Google Stadia to play Cyberpunk 2077 in VR on an Oculus Quest.

We’ll keep this article updated with information on new mods and any way to play the game fully or partially in VR.

Cyberpunk 2077 VR Mods

At the time of writing, there are no mods specifically made for Cyberpunk 2077 that add VR support. Keep an eye out though — we wouldn’t be surprised if someone develops a mod similar to the GTA V mod from last year.

However, in lieu of specifically-developed mods, there is another option called VorpX.

cyberpunk 2077 vr support

Cyberpunk 2077 VorpX for PC VR

VorpX is a VR 3D-driver that adds 3D visuals and head tracking support so you can look around inside non-VR games. However, settings like the FOV, depth of field, and more mean your mileage will vary from game to game.

It doesn’t always work perfectly and it may cause nausea for those who are sensitive, but for now it’s the next best option to PC VR support until a specifically-developed mod or another workaround comes along. There’s also no motion controller support for Cyberpunk or any Vorpx-supported game, so you’ll still have to use a keyboard and mouse or a connected controller.

VorpX is regularly updated with profiles for new releases and Cyberpunk is no exception – a profile for the game was added by VorpX’s creator Ralf shortly after release.

We haven’t tried VorpX with Cyberpunk yet, so we can’t personally vouch for it, but anecdotal reports from some users claim that the game works relatively well for a VorpX solution.

You’ll need a PC to run Cyberpunk and VorpX and a PC VR headset (or a Quest running Link) to play in VR. VorpX isn’t free either — it’s about $40 — and can be purchased here.

You can read more about VorpX’s Cyberpunk 2077 implementation on this forum thread.

Playing via Google Stadia On Quest and Quest 2

Cyberpunk 2077 is available entirely on Stadia, and with a little sideloading, you can play Stadia games on the Quest 2.

If you follow this guide, you can read about how to sideload a version of Chromium onto you Quest headset that lets you run Stadia and play Cyberpunk 2077 on a flatscreen in VR, with no gaming PC or hardware required. The only other device you’ll need is a Bluetooth game controller to connect to your Quest.

You can read the full guide here.

Using Bigscreen or Virtual Desktop

Without VR support or VR mods for Cyberpunk 2077, the next best thing would be playing the PC version of the game in VR on a large flatscreen display. There are two apps that are best suited to this — Virtual Desktop and Bigscreen.

While Bigscreen is free and Virtual Desktop costs $19.99, if you’re serious about playing the game on a flatscreen in VR, you’ll probably get your money’s worth with the latter. While Bigscreen supports remote desktop functionality, it’s not the app’s main focus. On the other hand, Virtual Desktop is a whole app designed to seamlessly control and interact with your desktop from within VR. If you have the money, we recommend giving Virtual Desktop a try — it also has many more options to fine tune the experience to work best with your network.

virtual desktop update

No matter which you choose, you’ll need to install a remote streamer client to use your desktop in VR with either app. You can find the download for the Bigscreen one here and the Virtual Desktop one here.

After you’ve installed your respective streamer application and it’s open and ready to go, launch Bigscreen/Virtual Desktop on your headset and enable remote streaming with your PC.

Once you’ve got your desktop pulled up in VR, simply launch Cyberpunk 2077 and get playing! It’s worth noting — you won’t be able to use your VR controllers for the game, so you’ll still need to have you keyboard and mouse or controller nearby. After that, you should be all set — enjoy the next best option before we get a VR mod.

Keep an eye on this article for updates on VR mods and any other news on Cyberpunk 2077 VR support.

Arthur Is A New Enterprise-Focused VR Meeting and Remote Office App

Today Arthur VR is debuting to the world as the latest VR meeting and virtual spaces application specifically designed for enterprise-focused clients. Additionally, the company also raised $2.5 in Series A funding with Silicon Valley CD Draper Associates.

Arthur is launching in “beta” today to allow interested companies the ability to try out its virtual office space services. The application is of course available in VR headsets like the Oculus Quest but also in private web browsers for non-VR mode too.

arthur meeting project management

In the company’s background information document it explains that Arthur was “built with the realization that workers are still far too reliant on physical meetings based on locale” but that same mantra can apply to countless other VR applications.

However, one thing that’s pretty special about Arthur is that all of its development occurred inside VR. The company does not have a physical office space or commuters at all.

I got a brief demonstration of Arthur last week that really showed off the same-room collaborative tools. Whereas other apps such as Rec Room, Bigscreen, Altspace VR, VRChat, and others are all trying to adapt and pivot to more professional use cases.

In Arthur you get slide decks you can import, 3D models you can manipulate for fun or to setup and decorate your office, and even whiteboards to write on alongside virtual monitors. Not to mention existing in the same space as everyone no matter the distance and obviously saving on real estate costs since there is no need for a physical office space.

If Bigscreen is the best way to watch TV and movies in VR, Arthur wants to be the easiest and most responsive way to have professional meetings in VR that doesn’t require retrofitting an existing application.

Rather than beaming you to the surface of Jupiter to have a meeting, Arthur is more interested in replicating the sense of standing in a conference room, along with the usual VR mechanics such as teleportation to move around and the ability to lift and move anything with your hands.

I appreciated the 3D model that the development team had made for me, pictured above, even if it looks a bit silly. However, there is no lip sync and every character is always wearing sunshades since they all have dead, static eyes. That being said, it looks pretty glorious, does it not?

The short list of featured current clients includes the United Nations; Societe Generale, one of the leading European financial services groups; one of the largest automotive companies in the world and one of the largest professional services firms in the world.
