BBC Taster VR App to Feature Content From BBC Three and Planet Earth II

The BBC has been a strong supporter of virtual reality (VR) for sometime now, having created project like The Turning Forest for Samsung Gear VR and BBC Earth partnering with Oculus on several experiences. Today BBC Taster, which deals with early and experimental ideas, has announced the BBC Taster VR App featuring content from BBC Three and Planet Earth II.

Developed using technology from EEVO to help BBC teams publish experimental mobile VR experiences, BBC Taster VR will feature a range of content such as animated VR, interactive 360° videos, dynamic binaural audio and branching narratives.

The first experiences to launch with the app include a trailer for upcoming BBC Three feature-length documentary One Deadly Weekend in America, new interactive 360-degree content from Planet Earth II, enabling viewers to choose their path through the story.

Andy Conroy, Controller of BBC Research and Development, said in a statement: “BBC Taster VR will be a fantastic showcase for some brilliant new commissions, as well as some new takes on some of the best BBC Taster VR experiences to date. It gives audiences cutting-edge mobile VR experiences from the BBC and, crucially, gives our editorial and technical teams even greater insight.”

Available for free on both Android and iOS platforms, the app will be regularly updated with new VR experiences over the coming weeks and months.

“Since moving online, BBC Three has already delivered best in class storytelling, great curation, content which reflects the diversity of the UK, and now it’s time for us to innovate even more. My new role as editorial lead for BBC Taster will help use new technologies to explore a new ways to tell stories that will engage our audience, said Damian Kavanagh, Controller, BBC Three. “This new VR trailer is a fantastic first step. Using virtual reality it literally puts the audience in the shoes of the victims of gun crime featured in our truly brilliant feature-length documentary, One Deadly Weekend in America. It’s the first time the BBC has ever used VR in this way, and offers a whole new way to engage an audience.”

As the BBC continues its development of VR, VRFocus will bring you the latest updates.

Life In 360°: Surround Sound

It’s time for us once again to dip into some culture courtesy of the BBC and the BBC Earth YouTube channel. It seems like an eternity ago that Planet Earth II something we’ve had the pleasure ofhit the small screen and, once again, the BBC’s wildlife department left the world stunned by the jewels in Mother Nature’s crown in a fascinating trek around the world.

It’s also a series we’ve actually covered once before on Li360 near the end of last year.

One of the aspects that makes the presentation so good is of course the soundtrack, the stirring theme tune of which was actually composed by Hans Zimmer. Responsible for the musical scores in the likes of Gladiator, the Pirates of the Caribbean series, The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Da Vinci Code and Inception. The BBC actually filmed in 360 degrees a recording of the theme and it is this that is today’s video. So get ready to sit back and take in an orchestra at work – because you’re sitting in the middle of them.

VRFocus is back on Friday with our last visit to Life In 360° for the week.

Step into the Tardis with Doctor Who Time Vortex 360

The long running BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who has become massively popular across the world and now the broadcaster is turning its attention to virtual reality (VR). Today, the BBC has announced the launch of a new immersive mobile videogame called Doctor Who Time Vortex 360.

As they speed through time, the title sees players pilot the TARDIS, tackling hazards and obstacles emerging from the future ahead of them, but as it’s a 360-degree experience they’ll sometimes need to physically turn themselves to look backwards in time in order to evade threats emerging from the past.

The endless runner was designed for the BBC by Goodboy Digital, the videogame utilises HTML5 and WebGL using PixiJS v5.0 to create a time travelling journey that works on a wide range of hardware.

Jo Pearce, creative director, BBC Digital Drama, said in a statement: “The beauty of this game is that you can use your mobile phone to fly the TARDIS wherever you are. Digital innovation is at the very heart of Doctor Who – this 360 degree game allows people to navigate the TARDIS through time and space like never before.

“We’ve seen a lot of innovation recently in the 360 and virtual reality space, but the majority has focused on ‘experiential’ video-based experiences. This game, however, brings together the worlds of casual, arcade-style gaming and 360/VR to create a fun Doctor Who experience that people can easily pick up and play, wherever they are.”

VR Film To Feature Heavily At Stockholm’s VR Scientific Festival 2017

There continues to be a lot of discussion about virtual reality (VR)’s place in the future of the film industry, big names and big studios continue to dip their toes and make encouraging noises about the technology but the decrease in price and increase in availability of 360 degree cameras has meant a growing interest at grassroots level and higher in creating cinematic experiences that tap into VR technologies.

Next Friday, May 12th 2017 a three day festival is being held in Stockholm, Sweden, to celebrate the burgreoning interest. It is being hosted by the KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

Called the VR Scientific Festival (or VR Sci Fest) it describes itself as a “unique experiment, where technology, science and creativity come together to find the best ways of using VR technologies to benefit people around the world”.

Speaking on the convention’s official website, festival head Elena Malakhatka said: “Our goal was to create a unique meeting point for those who are passionate about their profession, no matter if it is science, cinema, VR, education or anything else and to share their passion with each other. That’s why we created VR Expo zone, series of workshops, lectures and discussions about the future of the technology, as well as Art zone and showcase of the world best artistic VR experiences as a part of Kaleidoscope VR World Tour”.

Over the course of the event in the ‘Dome of Vision’ the organisers will be showcasing an array of 360 degree short films and documentaries as well as VR experiences relating to an array of social and scientific topics. The categories include the human body, technology and engineering, as well as space and the environment. With big name contributors such as the BBC, RYOT, RT (Russia Today)WITHIN,  NASA, and Google confirmed.
