Admix Sponsoring €5k Grand Prize for VR Days Europe’s XRBASE Investor Event

VR Days Europe began five years ago in Amsterdam, designed to promote the early onset of virtual reality (VR) technology. Returning for another three-day show in November, this year’s event will see the third Investor Event being held over two of those days, designed to help the next wave of startups. Supporting the endeavour, VR/AR monetization platform Admix will be putting up the grand prize of €5,000 EUR for one lucky winner.

VRDays Investor Event

Taking place from 13th – 14th November 2019, the XRBASE Investors Event invites venture capital firms interested in European XR start- and scaleups. Over the course of the two days, startups selected will have three minutes to pitch their idea before moving on to the next stage 1-on-1 investor meetings. If they’re really lucky then they’ll be selected for an invite-only dinner hosted by HTC Vive X for further networking opportunities.

“Access to capital is crucial in growing the XR ecosystem, with the investor invent we are giving XR start- and scaleups a high-quality podium to pitch and connect to investors from around the globe,” said Daniel ‘Kip’ Doornink, founder of VR Days Europe and XRBASE, in a statement.

Needless to say, the competition will be fierce with applications open until 15th October 2019. As mentioned, one startup will also walk away with the €5k grand prize. “Admix’s mission is to empower developers, creators and XR entrepreneurs to be successful, and we are delighted to present the Grand Prize to this year’s winner,” said Sam Huber, CEO, Admix, in a statement to VRFocus.

VR Days Europe has become a wide-ranging event featuring speakers from around the world as well as an exhibition so attendees can test the very latest XR technologies. Keynotes, expert sessions, workshops and seminars cover multiple topics from health and tech to business and the arts, with 140+ expert speakers taking part.

Last year’s event pitches included LIV, Gleechi, Poplar, Slanted Theory, Huxley, Hologate, Immersal, Holodeck VR, Vyking, Estudiofuture, Lightfield One, Neurodigital Technologies, QuarkVR and more. The event also has several open calls still running, including submissions for the Halo Awards, the Revolution Pavilion, the EUVR Meetup Summit and for volunteers interested in helping out.

VR Days Europe 2019 Lustrum Edition runs from 13th – 15th November 2019. Tickets are still available with an All Access Pass retailing for €349 (or €299 for returning attendees). For something a little cheaper, the Exhibition Pass only costs €55. Or, for an added bonus use the VRFOCUS10 code for a discount when purchasing tickets via EventbriteVRFocus will continue its coverage of VR Days Europe, reporting back with further updates.

SplitX XR Summit 2019 Returns to Croatia in May

In 2018 SplitX held its inaugural XR summit in the city of Split, Croatia, to discuss the very latest in virtual reality (VR) augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) technologies. Next month the event will return for another three days of talks for XR entrepreneurs and investors on the beautiful Dalmatian coast, with an even bigger lineup of industry guests.

At SplitX the organisers like to do things a little differently to normal conferences dedicated to XR technology. Due to the stunning Mediterranean location, world-class experts will discuss the future of VR/AR/MR in a location with 2000-years of history. As such, sessions are laid back affairs with guests also able to enjoy a mix of Roman palaces, Dalmatian taverns, beachside cafes, and high tech offices.

2018’s lineup of seven speakers has now grown alongside the interest in the event. Speakers for 2019 include:

  • Ryan Wang – Founding Partner at Outpost Capital
  • Jesse Damiani – Editor-at-Large of VRScout, Forbes Contributor, CEO of Galatea
  • Jaroslav Beck – Co-founder, CEO at Beat Games
  • Jeff Burton – Electronic Arts Co-founder/Holodeck VR
  • Nancy Baker Cahill – Multi-disciplinary artist, founder of 4th Wall
  • Krasi Nikolov – Founder, CEO of Quark VR
  • Dave Haynes – Director of Vive X Europe at HTC Vive
  • Kim Baumann Larsen – VR Designer, CEO of Dimension Design
  • Sara Lisa Vogl – World’s first VR Shaman / CTO VRBase
  • Igor Knezevic – Creative Director/Founder at Alienology
  • Samuel Huber – Founder / CEO at Admix
  • Armando Matijevic – SplitX Founder

“SplitX is the only tech event that gave me a sense of strong intimacy with fellow pioneers and an abundance of creativity in the relaxed and mind-opening atmosphere of a beautiful Mediterranean city,” said Dominic Eskofier Head of VR, EMEAI NVIDIA regarding SplitX 2018.

“SplitX is not a conference,” explains founder Armando Matijevic. “It’s an intimate gathering of XR experts designed to bring everyone together and to truly connect.”

SplitX Summit 2019 is being held in Split, Croatia between 17th to 19th May, co-hosted by Admix with VRFocus as media partner. To apply to attend the event head to the official website for more information and the application form. VRFocus will continue its coverage of SplitX, reporting back with any further updates.

Learn How to Make Your Game Pay With a Free Barebones Game Monetisation Webinar

In the highly competitive world of videogames sometimes just creating a decent project isn’t enough to see a return on time and investment. There are a number of different verticals studios need to explore, one of which is understanding videogame monetisation.

Admix Nat GeoWhich is why Oscar Clark, Lead Evangelist at ADMIX – a UK-based virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) startup  specialising in non-intrusive advertising – will be holding a couple of free webinars tomorrow, Tuesday, 27th November for interested developers.

Explaining what the online session is all about, an Eventbrite post states: “In this FREE Webinar we will show how, by understanding the underlying anatomy of a game, we can identify the core of what players want; and are happy to pay for. Regardless of the platform or genre; this approach skips directly to the core of what is the best way for developers to engage players and be able to generate the income needed to make the game successful!”

“I’m fed up with pointless arguments about free or paid games and thought it was time we looked at how we can find the best approach for any developer to find the best, fair way to find ways players would be happy to spend,” said Clark in a statement to VRFocus.

Admix Future ARThe ‘Barebones Game Monetisation’ webinar will feature an eight-step process which Clark will explain in greater detail, but it looks like this:

Step 1: What Do Players Value?
Step 2: Where is the Utility?
Step 3: What Form Does That Take?
Step 4: Why Should A Player Act?
Step 5: Why Should They Act Now?
Step 6: What is the Best Exchange?
Step 7: Why Would Players Want Ads?
Step 8: Why Would They Do It Again?

As mentioned the webinar is free but spaces are limited for each session. One takes place at 11am GMT (6am EST), and the other at 5pm GMT (12pm EST). Head on over to the official Eventbrite page to select your preferred time and secure a spot.

ADMIX recently announced that it had managed to raise $2.1 million USD of investment towards its goals of bringing non-intrusive advertising to VR and AR titles. For further updates, keep reading VRFocus.

The Future of AR and VR on VRFocus

It’s been just three weeks short of five years since I made that bold decision to bet my career on a very much unproven technology. Like many of you reading this, I took a chance and changed my life forever; virtual reality (VR) may still be a nascent technology, but the community behind it certainly isn’t. From the original Oculus Rift development kit right through to the upcoming Oculus Quest, VRFocus has been at the forefront of the VR scene, and I’m very proud to have been the captain of this ship for so long.

However, the industry has changed a lot within that time. There have been seismic shifts from booming startup investment to scrabbling for consumer dollars, and while this was to be expected the transition has also taken its toll on VRFocus. There is little room for a publication covering what is still a niche technology to expand without embracing the change, and so VRFocus must mature not in order to grow, but simply to maintain.

VRFocus Logo

I had originally planned on stepping down from my combined role of CEO and Editor more than two years ago, but changes within the company at the time kept me locked in so that I may ensure the team was supported throughout a transitional period. Two more years have passed and I definitely feel as though VRFocus isn’t moving fast enough, and it’s time for some fresh blood at the reins. Having recently separated from its parent company, VRFocus is now free to make some significant changes both internally and externally, and these changes have already begun.

Admix, a company that specialises in assisting developers to monetise their software products through non-intrusive advertising, has been supporting the development community through an online network known as VR/AR Pioneers. Here, the company showcases the latest efforts in using the mediums to create unique experiences and also to encourage discussion amongst the community. With a team dedicated to the network outside of its monetization strategy it’s a selfless endeavour that aligns itself perfectly with the original goal of VRFocus: to share in the wonder of these new mediums as they grow.

VRFocus has become known for supporting unique ventures that aid the development of AR and VR, even launching our own VR Diversity Initiative in 2017. Now, without the need to be pushed-and-pulled in multiple directions, VRFocus can further its efforts in this regard alongside the VR/AR Pioneers community. Furthermore, VRFocus will endeavour to ensure that all aspects of the medium – including those much further a field from videogames and entertainment than have previously been covered – receive an increased amount of attention. VRFocus has never been just for gamers, and can now ensure that even the most niche aspects of this niche medium can get some well deserved praise.

VRDI_Logo-1024x390Alongside Admix, I will stay with VRFocus throughout this latest transitional period to ensure that the publication becomes exactly what the audience wants and needs; which brings me to the entire point of this open letter: what is it that you – the hardened AR and VR audience – demand from a specialist media outlet? VRFocus has always prided itself on being fiercely independent, regardless of who holds the purse strings. It’s been referred to as the ‘beat news’ website for VR, the ‘specialist showcase’, the ‘most influential’ and so on. But while this is all well and good, it’s those of you who return day-after-day, reading dozens of articles and supporting VRFocus as it grows who should have a say as to what direction the publication moves in. The comments section below is open, as are my DMs on Twitter. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly as it’s your opinion that matters most.

Admix Completes Acquisition of VRFocus.com

Admix, who announced a $2.1M fresh capital injection last week, has today completed its acquisition of VRFocus.com, one of the leading publications focussed on AR and VR. As part of a philanthropic effort to assist the developing AR and VR industries, Admix has ensured that VRFocus.com will retain its editorial independence and remain the go-to publication for all the latest news and thought-provoking articles reflecting on immersive technology for many years to come.

Launched in 2014, VRFocus.com has grown to become a true pioneer in the space; first to report breaking industry news and delivering exclusive content from all corners of the world daily. VRFocus.com has remained fiercely independent throughout the last four years, and the acquisition by Admix allows the editorial team to maintain this position and continue its investment in community activities such as the VR Diversity Initiative.

VRDI_DOUBLME

Admix CEO, Sam Huber, says of the acquisition: “When we heard of the opportunity to be a part of it, we did not hesitate: VRFocus is a strong pillar of the VR community. Ask anyone in VR/AR and chances are they are regulars on this site. Can you imagine the VR world without VRFocus?”

Huber goes on to say, “The deal was made easy because our visions are aligned. Admix is all about empowering developers to be successful, through our community VR/AR Pioneers, and VRFocus is about showcasing VR’s awesomeness. Bringing VRFocus as part of the family is another move in that direction.”

With an eye on maintaining VRFocus’ independent content creation Admix has already begun hiring key personnel from the existing VRFocus.com team. Kevin Joyce, former CEO of VRFocus Ltd. and Editor of VRFocus.com, has been retained to oversee the transition, whilst senior members of the team are already back in production of content and coverage of all the latest news and trends.

Joyce says of the deal; “Admix, through its AR/VR Pioneers community, will continue to be centered on marketing tips and resources to help developers build successful VR companies, whilst VRFocus will continue in its role of showcasing the amazing worlds of AR and VR, reporting on its wide reaching community whilst staying completely independent from Admix. VRFocus will keep pushing to celebrate developers, show the best of AR/VR and give readers exclusive access to the industry.”

VR/AR Adtech Startup Admix Secures $2.1m Investment

With the size of the consumer virtual reality (VR) industry as it currently stands, it can be difficult for developers to see a return on their content investments, with many relying on outside financial assistance to stay afloat. Admix, a UK-based startup specialising in non-intrusive advertising to help studios monetise their projects, has managed to raise $2.1 million USD of investment towards its goals.

Admix Editor

The seed round was led by Speedinvest, with Suir Valley, Force over Mass and Founders Factory also participating. Admix will use the funds to support product and community development, with plans to double its current team of fifteen over the next 12 months.

“Today, VR/AR developers have very few options to monetize their content: the few solutions that exist are intrusive and not adapted to VR/AR. This creates a lack of incentive for creators, which slows down the industry. Admix aims to grow the industry by creating the infrastructure to power a sustainable business model in VR/AR,” said Samuel Huber, Admix’s co-founder and CEO in a statement. “Our non-intrusive advertising model respects the users, creates a sustainable economy for developers, and enables brands to stand out in a way that is impossible on existing, saturated channels”.

The company was founded in 2017 by gaming entrepreneur Samuel Huber (CEO), advertising veteran Joe Bachle-Morris (COO) and Mark Rich (CTO). Over the past 18 months Admix has seen exponential growth thanks to a partnership with Oath (the parent company of Yahoo and AOL), launching a beta earlier this year which has seen over 100 VR/AR creators working with its platform.

Admix Nat Geo

At present, the Admix plug-in for Unity supports banners and videos, with the company working on more advanced 3D ad units.

The next year will also see Admix ramp up its developer outreach through the Admix Academy. This operates an online community called VR/AR Pioneers, offering marketing resources to over 6,000 VR/AR developers, whilst adding over 2,000 members per month.

As Admix continues to grow and advance its platform VRFocus will report back with the latest updates.

Admix Joins the Virtual Reality Blockchain Alliance

There have been several companies who have been investigating various approaches to monetisation for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). One of those is Admix, who have created a monetisation platform for AR and VR. Admix are now working together with High Fidelity to bring new monetisation options to the High Fidelity virtual world.

The High Fidelity Marketplace will soon support the Admix solution, which allows High Fidelity domains to display brand-sponsored objects and adverts from the Admix network, allowing domain owners to share in the revenue.

Oasis Screenshot

In addition, Admix are joining the Virtual Reality Blockchain Alliance (VBA), which was co-founded by high Fidelity and JanusVR, which is aiming to allow for easier compatibility between VR developers by utilising blockchain technology.

“We’re delivering ads that make sense for virtual worlds,” said Admix CEO Samuel Huber. “We don’t use personal data to make ads relevant. We take our cues from the virtual environment itself, so everyone shares the same experience. It’s contextual data over behavioral data.”

High Fidelity domain owners will be able to use a simple drag-and-drop system to select ads from the Marketplace and choose the position, size and content. Admix then connects to an ecosystem of advertisers to display adverts appropriate to the virtual location, such as showing sports-related content in a virtual stadium.

“Advertisements in VR should respect privacy,” said High Fidelity CEO Philip Rosedale. “Admix is doing this the right way: showing ads without collecting any personal information about the users. It’s a great example of the kind of standards the VRBA can help create, and we are happy to work with Admix to champion the best practices for virtual worlds.”

A demo of the High Fidelity/Admix system in use is available to view in a video below. Simple ad formats will be available initially, with more complex ad placements being added to the platform as it develops.
