Häagen-Dazs Hopes to Save the Bees With VR

An alarming decline in the bee population has been noted by a number of scientists and activists. Since bees are critical to the production of a number of the most beloved Häagen-Dazs flavours, such as Rocky Road, Vanilla Swiss Almond and Strawberry, the company is turning to virtual reality (VR) in an effort to preserve the bee population.

Häagen-Dazs has been working towards supporting the survival of bees for ten years, aiming to save the creatures who are so vital for pollinating crops, thus sustaining agriculture as a whole. As part of its continued campaign, Häagen-Dazs have produced a VR experience that shows people how the future of the bees can be preserved.

The VR experience is titled ‘The Extraordinary Honey Bee’, and puts the user in the role of ne of the striped flying pollinators, shrinking down to honey bee size and letting them see the world how a honey bee does. In the process, viewers come to understand the threats facing the bee population, and how they can help support their local bee population.

“There are three important ways we can help bees and other pollinators: bring them flowers, protect their homes and spread the word,” says Elizabell Marquez, Director of the HÄAGEN-DAZS brand. “Over the past 10 years, HÄAGEN-DAZS has taken strides to support each of these key components, from donating more than $1 million to research and education to proactively working hand-in-hand with our suppliers to grow ingredients in bee-friendly environments. We are proud to continue this journey with a number of new sustainability-focused initiatives that will help the bees.”

The company are introducing a new flavour called Honey Salted Caramel Almond which has been created to raise awareness of the plight of the bee. In addition Häagen-Dazs are working with their suppliers to create sustaining bee-friendly environments.
