Oculus Go Will Support USB Storage According To John Carmack

With the Game Developer Conference (GDC) 2018 over, the worlds first chance to see the upcoming Oculus Go in person has come and gone. That hasn’t stopped details on the upcoming all-in-one virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) from being revealed though.

Recently on Twitter John Carmack, Oculus VR CTO, revealed that though it won’t be a feature at launch there are plans to bring support for USB storage to the Oculus Go. This will mean that users can attach a storage device to the micro USB slot on the side of the HMD and view media directly from it. Considering that framerate is kill in immersive VR experiences ensuring their is no drop in quality of framerate is a concern for many. By playing directly from a storage device, the concerns of streaming are out the window and the option to carried addition content in your pocket is also a plus.

Designed to be an all-in-one VR solution for users, the Oculus Go is set to launch later this year and give users a chance to experience immersive content without the need for a mobile device or computer. Ahead of its launch a number of titles have been confirmed to be coming to the platform including Catan VR.

Elsewhere, new features were revealed for the Oculus Go including the option for developers to choose to run the display at 72 frames-per-second (FPS) rather than 60 FPS and new solutions within the hardware and software to optimize CPU and/or GPU usage to reduce heat and battery consumption.

VRFocus’ Senior Staff Writer Peter Graham got hands-on with the Oculus Go at GDC 2018 saying: “Like any hands-on at a show it can be difficult to accurately gauge a piece of hardware and truly pick it apart. For this brief first look Oculus Go certainly offers a compelling VR experience. It may not offer roomscale, inside-out tracking like Vive Focus but for $199 there’s already plenty of tech built in. If standalone devices like Oculus Go become popular the days of plugging a phone into a HMD may be numbered.”

VRFocus will be sure to bring you all the latest on the Oculus Go so stay tuned for more.
