dark eclipse vr moba psvr sunsoft

Dark Eclipse, the free-to-play VR MOBA exclusive to PSVR, just got a slew of updates to ring in the holiday season. The massive 2.02 patch not only introduces three brand new heroes to choose from, but it brings along four festive winter-themed skins, additional tutorials, as well as new login bonuses.

The three new heroes in Dark Eclipse are Owen, Sosei, and Jysook. You can see them in their featured images down below, just click each image to expand it:

Owen is a powerful hero that channel his strength. He needs to charge up before engaging the enemy, but once charged, his power is “unprecedented” according to the patch notes. Then there’s Sosei, a support Dominator hero that can sustain lengthy combat encounters and revive fallen Leaders or heal soldiers to swing the flow of battle. Finally, Jysook is an assassin Dominator hero that can lay bombs as traps on the ground or self-destruct to ensure crucial kills.

Veronika, Wuntasto, and Jysook are all getting winter skins in this update as well, which you can see preview versions of up in the featured image at the top of this post.

To get a better idea of what Dark Eclipse looks like in action as a VR MOBA, check out our gameplay below:

In our review of Dark Eclipse, we scored it a 6/10 concluding: “For those who want to try another genre, or mashup to be more specific, and think they might like a slower game where players take their time to implement a strategy, then Dark Eclipse is worth a look.”

Playful CEO: PSVR Exclusive Star Child ‘Definitely Not’ Cancelled

Star Child Hand PSVR PlayStation Not Cancelled

The mysterious side-scrolling game Star Child is “definitely not” cancelled, according to Playful CEO Paul Bettner.

The statement comes after some PlayStation 4 owners on Thursday who had pre-ordered the game received a message from the PlayStation Store stating “the publisher has notified us that the game is cancelled.” A tweet posted to the official Star Child Twitter account on Friday provided a status update to the game saying that the “internal projected launch date changed, triggering a cancellation of pre-orders on PSN.”

Playful is the company behind Lucky’s Tale — a groundbreaking VR platformer which debuted with the Oculus Rift in 2016. They built sequel Super Lucky’s Tale as a more traditional flat-screen platformer for the Xbox One and then  showed Star Child for PlayStation VR. The game is also planned to work outside VR headsets as well, but details are still sparse and we noted that Kynan Pearson, the game’s original director, lists on Twitter and LinkedIn that he left Playful at some point this year. Bettner told UploadVR the game has a new leader and “we owe the world an update.”

“How our players experience the story of Star Child is so important to us, which is why we’re being so thoughtful about what we say and how we say it,” Bettner told UploadVR. “We’re not quite ready to share more yet, but we’ll make it worthwhile when we do.”

Community Download: What Do You Want From PS Move 2.0?

Community Download: What Do You Want From PS Move 2.0?

Community Download is a weekly discussion-focused articles series published every Monday in which we pose a single, core question to you all, our readers, in the spirit of fostering discussion and debate.

Sorry for the hiatus! Until recently the comments on our website were down and not functioning properly, but now that they’re back and working I thought it was time to start up the discussions once again!

Spurred in part by the recent release of Borderlands 2 VR on PSVR, I want to talk about the PS Move controllers. Borderlands 2 VR allows players to use the PS Move controllers instead of the  DualShock 4, if they want, but it’s a less than ideal experience. Similar to how they worked in Skyrim VR you’ve got to press a button and point your left hand to move around and press the X and O buttons on your right hand to rotate from left to right. It just feels wonky.

With enough practice you can alright, as shown in my gameplay video here, but it’s less than ideal. The lack of analog sticks feels like a major missing feature. There’s also the question of ergonomics, battery life, and all of the other design considerations.

We’ve seen enough patents and read enough statements to know that Sony is already working on the PlayStation 5 and probably a new iteration of the PSVR headset as well. So, with that will hopefully come brand new motion controllers. If that’s the case: What do you want out of PS Move 2.0?

Are the current models enough for you, or do want/need more? What elements from Vive, Knuckles, and Touch would you want carried over to PS Move?

Let us know what you think of PS Move and what you want from PS Move 2.0 down in the comments below!

PSVR Hits Re-Enter UK Charts Following Mega Pack Launch

PSVR Hits Re-Enter UK Charts Following Mega Pack Launch

Some of PSVR’s best games (and some okay-ish ones) have fought their way back onto the weekly UK videogame software following the introduction of a new bundle.

As we wrote about back in November, Sony just launched the PSVR ‘Mega Pack’ in the UK. It’s a frankly brilliant collection that includes hits like Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Wipeout Omega Collection and Skyrim VR as well as appreciated extras like Doom VFR and PlayStation VR Worlds. Having gone on sale, GamesIndustry.biz reports this week’s charts include PSVR Worlds at 26, Astro Bot at 28, Skyrim at 34, Wipeout at 35 and Doom at 36.

The latter three make it pretty obvious that Sony’s new bundle has helped shift yet more PSVR units, whereas extra physical sales for Astro Bot and PSVR Worlds (which was also included in pre-existing bundles) will have helped them gain ground.

Between this bundle and Black Friday deals, Sony has been pulling out all the stops on getting PSVRs under trees this Christmas. Back in August, we reported that the headset had surpassed three million in sales around the world. Will Sony be passing the four million milestone this holiday season?

New PSVR ‘Mega Pack’ Europe Bundle Includes Skyrim VR, Doom VFR, Astro Bot, and Wipeout: Omega Collection

New PSVR ‘Mega Pack’ Europe Bundle Includes Skyrim VR, Doom VFR, Astro Bot, and Wipeout: Omega Collection

Sony is launching a new PSVR bundle in the UK, Germany, Austria and Switzerland next week. The ‘Mega Pack’ includes the headset, camera bar, Skyrim VR, Doom VFR, Astro Bot, and WipEout: Omega Collection. It also includes the PlayStation Worlds VR demo reel which gives you a taste of what’s possible in VR.

What the pack doesn’t include is Playstation Move controllers. If you want your hands in VR, you’ll need to buy those separately. They aren’t useful for Astro Bot or WipEout, but for Skyrim VR, and PlayStation VR Worlds and many of the best PSVR games on the store they really take the VR experience to the next level, so we highly recommend buying them too.

The company hasn’t announced the price yet, but given the pricing of the other similar PSVR bundles we’d expect it to come in at around £200-£250. This is a box that will be under many European Christmas trees this year.

Skyrim VR [9/10]

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is the whole game brought into virutal reality – DLC and all. This is no “experience” or experiment, this is the whole >100 hour game and all of its gameplay mechanics. We were highly impressed when we reviewed the game, stating:

For a game that wasn’t originally designed for VR at all and has been ported first to the least powerful of the big three VR platforms in the PSVR, Skyrim VR is nothing short of impressive. This really is the Skyrim that you know and love, but now you can enjoy it like never before with the immersive presence of a VR headset. With a large variety of control schemes to choose from and hundreds of hours of content, this is a game that all RPG fans should play as long as you can look past the sometimes glaring issues. And if you don’t own a PSVR yet, luckily there’s a new Skyrim VR bundle with your name on it.

DOOM VFR [6/10]

DOOM VFR is not a port, it’s an entry in the popular gore shooter franchise made specifically for VR. While it provides some great VR action, there are some problems on the PSVR version. As we stated in our review:

While Skyrim VR made a great case for the VR port, Doom VFR brings us back to the drawing board. On PSVR, the game has its moments, largely thanks to the foundations it was built upon with the 2016 original. In the end, though, the real fight is with its awkward control setups that eventually led me back to play with just a standard gamepad. Though the foundations of a hugely enjoyable shooter are intact, VFR’s struggle with the platform’s limitations makes it feel like the VR support is holding it back more than anything.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission [8.5/10]

Astro bot is one of those games that proves that 3rd person platformers can work just as well as 1st person games in VR. We really enjoyed reviewing this game, concluding:

Astro Bot is not here to reinvent the wheel or claim the throne as VR’s killer app; there are enough games trying to do that already. Instead, it fuzes the thrill of seeing a virtual world come to life with the dependably engaging gameplay of one of gaming’s most beloved genres and explores what that can mean with fascinating results. It’s a refreshing reminder of just how astonishing VR can be when there’s nothing in your way, and it’s an absolutely essential experience for any PSVR owner.

WipEout: Omega Collection [9/10]

WipEout: Omega Collection is the Wipeout you dreamed of back in 1995. As we stated in our review:

Wipeout VR is an eccentric mix of new and old; a series delivering on the same kind of regular reliability it has for over two decades but from an entirely fresh perspective. Everything you love about Wipeout is here but with a new lease of life, from the violent crunch of combat to the twitch-like reactions needed to navigate the many courses from the seat of your vehicle. It’s both Wipeout as you love it and as you’ve never seen it before, and one of the very best games you can get on PSVR yet.

PSVR Announcements Promised For Kinda Funny Games Showcase

PSVR Announcements Promised For Kinda Funny Games Showcase

PlayStation VR fans might want to pencil next week’s Kinda Funny Games Showcase into their diaries.

Yup, our friends over at Kinda Funny are running their very own press conference-style showcase on December 8th at 10am PT as a fill-in for Sony’s usual PlayStation Experience show, which is taking a break this year. But, most importantly, the team’s Greg Miller recently confirmed on Twitter that there will be ‘PSVR announcements’ at the show.

Exactly what these could be we’re not yet sure but we’ll definitely be tuning in to find out. With Sony also set to skip E3 next year there aren’t going to be many opportunities to see surprise PSVR announcements at big events any time soon.

Sony Is Skipping E3 For The First Time Ever In 2019

Sony Is Skipping E3 For The First Time Ever In 2019

In an unprecedented announcement today, it looks like Sony is skipping the enormous, annual E3 event in Los Angeles, CA for next year. The expo has been around for almost 25 years and Sony was one of the major players in its creation as a spin-off from CES. This is the first time Sony has not attended.

According to Variety, they found out about this news deep within the Entertainment Software Association’s 2019 expo announcement. Not only will Sony not host a press conference at E3 2019, but they are reportedly not “showing up at all” during the show.

In September of this year, Sony also canceled its PlayStation Experience (PSX) event that it had hosted for the past several years as well. Interestingly enough, these moves don’t seem to be happening due to anything negative. On the contrary, 2018 was one of the strongest years for the PlayStation brand ever with huge platform exclusives such as God of War and Spider-Man leading the game of the year discussions, PS4 surpassing 80 million worldwide units, and PSVR surpassing three million.

Sony still has several major exclusive titles left to release for the PS4 before moving on to the PS5 though, including Days Gone, The Last of Us 2, Ghosts of Tsushima, Death Stranding, and Resident Evil 2 Remake. It was shaping up to be a quiet year for PSVR after the monstrous time it’s had in 2018. Whether or not Sony will go the Nintendo Direct route and host a remote, video version of a press conference remains to be seen. Reports do seem to point towards a 2020 launch for the PlayStation 5.

Regardless, this is huge news for E3 and the show floor won’t be the same without the giant, blue booth.

Update: The following two paragraphs provide further details from a Game Informer article:

“As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community,” the company told Game Informer in a statement. “PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can’t wait to share our plans with you.”

When asked if Sony would push its event off-site, similar to how Electronic Arts provides a show adjacent to E3, PlayStation senior vice president of communications Jennifer Clark elaborated further saying, “We will not activate or hold a press conference around E3.”

We’ve reached out to Sony for further comment.

You Should Definitely Buy A PSVR This Black Friday

You Should Definitely Buy A PSVR This Black Friday

You might have noticed that we’re quite fond of VR here at Upload. In fact, we’re absolutely enthralled about it; we love to play in it, talk about it and write about it. But, when it comes to actually recommending you buy a VR headset? That’s another matter, because we know the realities of spending $500+ on a VR setup that requires plenty of space within your home. If you’re not at the highest tier of enthusiast, it probably still isn’t worth that much to you.

But that changes this Black Friday season.

As we reported last week, Sony’s PSVR headset is going to come down to $199.99 at select retailers for the shopping event, in bundles that include some of the headsets best games. This new price, combined with the headset’s accessibility and impressive back catalog of games, means that this is one of the first times we can wholeheartedly tell you that you should buy a VR headset.

PSVR has had a great year, arguably the best of any major VR device. It hit the ground running with an ace port of Wipeout Omega Collection and Sony has since propped it up with excellent titles like the spooky The Persistence, the enthralling Moss and sleeper hits like Bow to Blood. More recently, though, the platform’s enjoyed some genuinely brilliant games that deliver on the VR dreams we’ve all had, be it Firewall: Zero Hour‘s incredibly intense online firefights or the Mario-style delights of Astro Bot Rescue Mission. Even the most dedicated of gamers will want to check out essential oddities like Deracine and that new Tetris game is somehow absolutely marvelous, too.

Then there’s a suite of older games that remain some of the most impressive in all of VR-dom. Resident Evil 7 is probably still the most polished, high-end VR game on the market and it’s still hard to believe that Bethesda really managed to squeeze all of Skyrim into the headset. The indie support has been great too; Superhot VR, Sprint Vector, Downward Spiral, Torn and The Invisible Hours all hold up on PSVR.

And there’s more to come. Sony continues to support the platform with games like Blood and Truth and even has a new VR-dedicated developer up and running in the north of the UK. Plus, some of PC VR’s best titles like Beat Saber and The Mage’s Tale are all set to make their way to the platform in the near future.

All that’s the say that PSVR has a line-up more than worthy of that price tag, and we wouldn’t worry about the headset being replaced by a superior version at the very least until the PS5 is out (and maybe not even then). In fact, even the all-in price of the headset and a normal PS4, which also costs $199.99 with a copy of Marvel’s Spider-Man for Black Friday, is low enough to still get our thumbs up. PSVR may technically be the least impressive of the major PC and console-based headsets on the market right now, but Sony’s experience in building an ecosystem to support its products still makes it arguably the best choice of the lot. With that in mind, I can pretty confidently say that now is the time to buy PSVR.

First PSVR Black Friday 2018 Deal Slashes $100 Off Big Bundles

First PSVR Black Friday 2018 Deal Slashes $100 Off Big Bundles

Yes, Halloween is out of the way and now the real terror is almost upon us; it’s time to start talking about Black Friday deals.

Early as it may be, the first PSVR Black Friday deal has just been spotted. Target is set to slash $100 off of the price of the recently released Creed hardware bundle, taking it to $249.99. That’s a pretty significant saving; this bundle includes the headset, camera and two Move motion controllers before throwing in Survios’ excellent boxing game and one of the all-time great PSVR titles, Superhot VR, on top.

But the saving doesn’t stop there. Target is also taking $100 off of two other PSVR bundles with also feature big games. First, there’s a bundle featuring last year’s Doom VFR for $200 (which we weren’t super keen on), but easily the better of the two is the Astro Bot pack, which features last month’s critically acclaimed VR platformer and another one of the best VR games of the year, Moss. That pack is also $200, but none of these bundles include Move controllers as they can all be played with the DualShock 4 that comes with your PS4.

Black Friday takes place on November 23rd and you can be sure there’ll be a mountain of deals to announce in the weeks leading up to it. No doubt HTC and Oculus want in on the money, too.

Dreams Beta Will Not Support PSVR ‘Initially’, Other VR Devs Already Making Content

Dreams Beta Will Not Support PSVR ‘Initially’, Other VR Devs Already Making Content

More trickles of VR news for Media Molecule’s Dreams this week; the studio has confirmed that PSVR support won’t be included in the upcoming beta for the game, at least at first.

Studio Director Siobhan Reddy confirmed as much in a recent edition of the Game Informer Show. When asked if PSVR support would be featured in the beta, Reddy simply replied: “Not initially, no.”

The developer did reaffirm that the beta is arriving this year and is aware of the fact that that’s not a very big window. From the sounds of it, PSVR support could be added in later down the line, but we do know it’ll at least be in the full release from day one. There also won’t be online multiplayer support in the beta but couch-based co-op will be in.

Elsewhere, Creative Director Mark Healey explained that Move controllers will be available as a way to play in VR, whereas they’re relegated to the creator mode when playing on flatscreen. “At the moment the Move controllers are really for create mode,” Healey said. “We have got a play mode in there, it’s a testing thing, but I think what we’ll do is we’ll release all the functionality that lets you fully wire up the Move controllers when we do the VR job, I think.”

The team also suggested that it may look into social screen functionality, which outputs a different image to the connected TV for others not in VR to watch and even interact with. “We’ve got more work to do on the VR so that’s maybe one of the things we should look at,” Healey said. “That’s a thing with Sony VR in particular, so that could be quite cool.”

Finally, it was also confirmed that a PSVR developer is already working on content for Dreams, but we don’t yet know who that is.

We probably won’t be playing Dreams in VR this year, then, but fingers crossed we’ll be able to dive in in early 2019.
