Google Spotlight Stories’ Age of Sail Now Available

After debuting at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival over the summer, Google Spotlight Stories’ Age of Sail came to the Venice International Film Festival in September. Today, the immersive experience has made its consumer debut via YouTube and the Spotlight Stories app.

Age of Sail

Inspired by the paintings and style of Bernie Fuchs, Age of Sail is Google Spotlight Stories most visually complex and longest project to date.

Set on the open ocean in 1900, Age of Sail is the story of William Avery (played by Ian McShane), an old sailor adrift and alone in the North Atlantic. When Avery reluctantly rescues a teen (played by Cathy Ang) who has mysteriously fallen overboard, Avery finds redemption and hope in his darkest hours. The film will offer a completely immersive experience with a full 360-degree field of view along with having a running time of around 12 minutes in length.

“I wanted this piece to operate in a less stylized universe because the audience should believe the world is real, to feel the peril and the exhilaration of being in a storm, to be vulnerable,” said Director John Kahrs in a statement.

To watch Age of Sail find it on YouTube or via the Google Spotlight Stories app which can be downloaded for Android and iOS devices. When it comes to YouTube, the YouTube VR app is now available for Oculus Go, as well as supporting PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Samsung Gear VR.

Google Spotlight Stories has created several experiences over the years, with recent additions including Piggy, Back to the Moon, Isle of Dog: Behind the Scenes, Son of Jaguar and several more, all available through the app. As further content is added, VRFocus will keep you updated with the latest experiences.

YouTube VR für Oculus Go veröffentlicht

YouTube VR Is Finally Available on Oculus Go

YouTube VR Is Finally Available on Oculus Go

Google’s YouTube has now made their app available on Facebook’s Oculus Go standalone headset. The app was previously available on Samsung Gear VR, which uses the same store as Oculus Go, but Go was blacklisted until today.

YouTube VR launched on Gear VR back in July, but no word was given on Go support. At Oculus Connect 5 in late September, Oculus Product Manager Sean Liu finally announced that YouTube VR was coming to Go.

Two Years On: PlayStation VR – Applications

While the PlayStation 4, and therefore the PlayStation VR are focussed on videogaming, and the closed ecosystem of the PlayStation means that productivity apps and the like are not really the sort of thing that tends to appear on the PlayStation VR, there are still a number of things you can do with a PlayStation VR that doesn’t involve videogames.

Though with PC-based virtual reality (VR) applications for things like virtual desktops or other productivity and work-based apps are in high demand, in the PlayStation VR ecosystem, things tends to be a bit more focussed towards leisure.

One of the biggest apps for PlayStation VR is, of course, YouTube. There are plenty of 360-degree videos available on YouTube which can be enjoyed using the YouTube app, which can be download from the PlayStation Store. Even non-VR YouTube content can be enjoyed using the cinematic mode.

For more cinematic entertainment there are some great animated 360-degree films available, such as INVASION! Or Allumette. INVASION! Is a Pixar-inspired VR animation starring a fluffy white bunny, while Allumette takes inspiration from classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales.

There is also Littlestar and Lens, both of which offers 360-degree videos and VR, which both offer a range of experiences from trips to Disneyland to in-depth investigative journalism, featuring content taken from big name partners including National Geographic, Discovery, Showtime and ABC.

One of the big reasons for buying a PlayStation 3 was its ability to work as a blu-ray player. The PlayStation 4 has kept this functionality, but with a PlayStation VR there’s an additional feature you can use – 3D movies. If you happen to have a 3D Blu-Ray in your collection, you can now enjoy it in full 3D without needing a 3D TV, since the PlayStation VR is all you need.

Its also worth noting that if the TV is already in use, you can still turn on the PlayStation VR and enjoy some videogames – even non-VR ones, from within the PlayStation VR without disturbing anyone’s Netflix watching.

Google Brings VR Creator Lab To Europe

The creation of 360-degree videos has become one of the most popular entry points into creating content for virtual reality (VR). The number of available cameras and editing tools has made it an attractive option, and Google’s introduction of the VR180 format was designed to make it even easier to create VR content. Google are now partnering with VR Scout and YouTube to bring a series of VR180 training sessions called the VR Creator Lab to Europe.

Google have now announced that one of the first VR180 sessions will take place in London, UK, including a three-day ‘boot camp’ in September, 2018.

Participants in the VR Creator Lab will receive up to $40,000 (USD) in funding towards their VR project, as well as the aforementioned boot camp, participants will get access to three months of training from leading VR instructors and filmmakers.

YouTube creators who have at least 10,000 subscribers along with independent filmmakers are eligible to apply. Participants must be over 18 years old. Google will be selecting participants based on the quality of the pitch along with the feasibility of the proposed project being completed within a three month time frame.

Applications for the VR Creator Lab can be found on the Google Creator Lab website. Applications will be open until 5pm (BST) on 6th August, 2018. The London VR Creator Lab boot camp is due to to take place on 18th-20th September, 2018.

The London VR Creator Lab follows on from the similar event which was recently held in Los Angeles, with other such sessions being planned for later in the year in other locations, though full details have not yet been confirmed.

YI Horizon VR180 Camera

For creators who are interested in VR180 filmmaking, Google has posted a guide on how to get started with creating with VR180 cameras and editing tools.
