This Week in VR Sport: Motor racing, Skateboarding and BMX

It’s the weekend again, with Formula One qualifying and Wimbledon tennis happening in the UK, so VRFocus is getting into the spirit of things with its weekly look at things that cross over virtual reality (VR) and sports.

ESPN’s X Games Streams In VR

Happening over this weekend, having begun on the 13th July, and running until the 16th July is the Minneapolis X Games, an annual extreme sport event that is considered to be one of the most prestigious events in the extreme sport world.

This year, sports channel ESPN is livestreaming the event in VR. The livestreaming is in partnership with Samsung, so Samsung Gear VR users will be able to watch coverage of three events, Skateboard Vert, BMX Street and Skateboard Street Amateurs using the dedicated app. The livestream will also feature commentary and analysis and will be available in 48 countries.

Acura Hosts AR Livestream Race

In order to showcase its upcoming new all-wheel-drive A-Spec car, Acura hosted a contest called What A Race, an augmented reality (AR) driving experience that was livestreamed on Facebook.

Getting behind the wheel of the Acura 2018 TLX A-Spec, four drivers competed for the fastest lap time. Each lap triggered a different AR course that only the driver could see, using the different obstacles to highlight each of the new Acura vehicle’s capabilities. Cameras mounted on the driver’s helmets gave viewers a direct look at the action, in addition to cameras that were placed across the race track.

There was also interactive elements to the race, with viewers being prompted to react to various prompts in order to clear obstacles for the drivers to help their favoured driver succeed.

“The team patched into the TLX’s ABS system to accurately track the vehicle’s wheel speed and direction,” Acura said. “To further mitigate any potential technical snafus during the race, the team custom fabricated a device attached to the under carriage of the vehicle, allowing the location of the car in the AR world to be automatically reset remotely and quickly, as needed.”

The helmets used by the drivers have AR functionality built right in, with a full-colour 80-degree display and HD mirrored lens technology in order to provide a better field of view, along with a gyroscope to monitor head movements. The helmets are connected to a computer in the back seat that provided the AR rendering needed.

More sport and VR/AR action will no doubt be available next weekend here at VRFocus.

Samsung To Broadcast VR Livestreams Of Three X Games Events

The move towards bringing more sport to virtual reality (VR) is becoming an ever more desirable goal for tech companies and broadcasters. Just last month Intel announced at E3 its involvement in the Worldwide VR Challenger League for eSports as well as being announced as the technology partner for the next Olympic Games as it looks to build on work it began with this year’s Superbowl.

It was also at the very beginning of last month that Samsung announced that it would be offering fans of mixed martial arts the opportunity to get a front-row seat by broadcasting footage of the UFC as part of its Unframed series. Mentioned at the time was Samsung’s deal to also get involved with the X Games and with a week to go before the event in Minneapolis, Minnesota details have been released on exactly what this will entail.

Samsung is teaming up with ESPN who actually host the X Games, and who have revealed via a press release that three disciplines from the X Games have been chosen to be broadcast in VR throughout the first three days of the event. Which is taking place from 13th-16th July 2017.

  • Skateboard Vert – tricks performed within a half-pipe, for the uninitiated – takes place on Thursday, July 13th 2017 with a live VR broadcast at 6:45 PM (ET).
  • BMX Street – tricks performed across an urban area styled course – takes place on Friday, July 14th 2017 with a live VR broadcast at 6:00 PM (ET).
  • Skateboard Street Amateurs – an invitational event featuring skateboarders from around the US –  takes place on Saturday, July 15, 2017 with a VR broadcast again at 6:00 PM (ET)

Samsung are teaming with VR production house Digital Domain to produce the livestream which will utilize multiple 360 degree cameras and real-time graphics to keep viewers up to date on the competition standings. ESPN will also be producing its own broadcast and highlight packages as well for those not wanting to watch in VR.

Vice President of ESPN X Games Tim Reed sees the addition of VR as very much in-line with the X Games idea. HTC even showed off the HTC Vive at the event in 2016.  “X Games has always been a laboratory for innovation and progression, both for the world’s top action sports athletes and for ESPN’s production of events and use of technology,” He explained. “We are always pushing to create new and better ways for fans to experience and interact with X Games. Working with Samsung to produce these three great events for Gear VR is an awesome example of that.”

Samsung’s VR Live Pass Will Let You Watch ‘X Games’ and Live Nation Events in 360

VR Live Pass, Samsung’s 360-degree video live-stream partnership for Gear VR, continues in July with live coverage of the X Games Minneapolis. Samsung is offering unique access to live events this summer free for all Gear VR users, which began with the recent UFC 212 bout in Rio de Janeiro.

After the X Games, a music concert with an “international artist” promoted by Live Nation will be streamed in August from the USA, although details are yet to be confirmed. “We are excited to offer Samsung Gear VR users the opportunity to experience their favorite live music and sporting events through our industry-leading VR ecosystem,” said Younghee Lee, CMO and Executive Vice President, Samsung Electronics. “Partnering with these companies to expand our VR services helps us to open up a new gateway of opportunities for fans and demonstrate our commitment to delivering experiences that make the seemingly impossible, possible.”

The Gear VR headset has certainly enjoyed a wealth of 360-degree content since its launch in 2015. In terms of live sporting events, it dominates the space, with exclusive apps not found on other mobile VR platforms or higher-quality VR headsets on PC and PlayStation. This is largely attributed to its early arrival to market and relative affordability, making it the single largest VR platform in the world. In addition to the UFC 212 coverage, Gear VR owners were recently offered unique access to PGA Tour golf live-streaming, and Major League Baseball just revealed a new three-year partnership with Intel to bring weekly coverage of games using their True VR technology.

From July 13th to 16th, US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis will host the Summer X Games 2017. The annual extreme sports event features skateboarding, BMX and motocross, and will be livestreamed in 360 video for the first time. Gear VR owners will be able to watch some of the best riders and skaters compete, including Jimmy Wilkins, Chad Kerley and Jagger Eaton.

“The X Games is the premier action sports event that continually provides a platform for athletic progression,” said Tim Reed, Vice President, ESPN X Games. “From never been done tricks to awe-inspiring competition, Samsung’s Gear VR technology is perfect to showcase dynamic action sports to viewers across the world.”

While this kind of free content is great news for Gear VR owners, it’s about time VR sports coverage became more platform-agnostic. Leading live event VR broadcaster NextVR’s move to support both Gear VR and Daydream devices is a step in the right direction, but there are still missing pieces.
