Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife Gameplay Trailer Makes Great Use Of MR

The first gameplay trailer for Fast Travel Games’ Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife is here, and it makes great use of mixed reality.

We first showcased Wraith at the Upload VR Showcase: Summer Edition back in June. The game is set in the World of Darkness universe and promises a full-on VR horror experience. This trailer certainly delivers on that aspect; Fast Travel teamed up with LIV and Splitverse to deliver a stunning mixed reality angle that really captures what being in the game might actually feel like. It’s one of the best integrations of MR in a trailer we’ve seen – check it out below.

Wraith: The Oblivion Gameplay Trailer

It helps that the game itself continues to look promising. Wraith takes place in Barclay Mansion where the player, themselves cast as a recently-deceased Wraith, is stalked by terrifying Spectres. As you can see in the footage, stealth will play a huge element in the game, with the player hiding from enemies in closets and trying to sneak past undetected.

But the footage also gives us our first look at some of the powers you’ll wield as a Wraith. This includes Wraithgrasp, which allows you to grab objects from a distance, manipulate them and even change the environment around them. Also, Sharpened Sense will help you track movement of spirits, and Insubstantiality lets you walk through walls.

Along with the trailer’s release, Fast Travel finally confirmed that Wraith is coming to pretty much every VR headset there is — Quest, Rift, Vive, Index and PSVR — in early 2021. We’ll have more on the game later this week, so check back soon. What do you make of the Wraith: The Oblivion gameplay trailer? Let us know in the comments below!

Check Out Early Development Footage Of Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife

Just in from this year’s Upload VR Showcase: Summer Edition – we have early development footage of Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife!

The first VR game in the World of Darkness universe — announced a little earlier then expected last week — is being developed by Fast Travel Games. The first full gameplay trailer is set to arrive in August, but Fast Travel has pulled together a very, very early look at the of the game’s environments in a new clip below exclusive to the Showcase. Check out the content, introduced by Fast Travel’s Erik Odeldahl.

Again, this is just a small peek, but you can already get a sense of the atmosphere Fast Travel is going for. As the teaser trailer (also embedded in the trailer above) reveals, at least part of Wraith will be set inside the confines of a creepy mansion, and it looks like that’s what we’re seeing here.

Fast Travel says Wraith is a full-on horror VR game, inspired by the likes of Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Alien: Isolation. Other details are thin on the ground right now, but it seems safe to say this will be a terrifying VR adventure. Fast Travel previously worked on Apex Construct, The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets, and Budget Cuts 2, so it’s safe to say this is a change of pace for the Stockholm-based developer.

Stay with us on the Upload VR Showcase: Summer Edition. We’ve got plenty more to come including the latest look at Low-Fi and Vertigo Remastered. You won’t to miss this!

Well, the surprise may have gone live a little earlier than intended, but we still have some new goodness to share on Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife.

Fast Travel Games will debut exclusive early development footage of its next title at the Showcase on June 16th (starting 9am PT). We have to stress this will be a very early sneak peek; the full gameplay trailer isn’t set to debut until August.

Wraith is the first VR game set in the World of Darkness universe and, as the name suggests, focuses on the Wraith faction. Fast Travel is promising a full-on horror game akin to Amnesia: The Dark Descent or Alien: Isolation.

Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife is the Next Project from Apex Construct Dev Fast Travel Games

Wraith: The Oblivion - Afterlife

To date, Fast Travel Games has either created or helped create virtual reality (VR) titles which are colourful (Apex Construct), comedic (Budget Cuts 2: Mission Insolvency) or light in nature (The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets). Its next project looks to be very different, stepping into the horror genre with Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife.

Wraith: The Oblivion - Afterlife

Only teasing hints about the videogame have been revealed so far, such as the trailer below. The story is set in the World of Darkness universe (Vampire: The MasqueradeWerewolf: The Apocalypse) inside Barclay mansion – which looks like it’ll be filled with horrors.

But you won’t be playing some hero trying to save the day or an unwitting victim looking for an escape. Instead, you’ll be playing from the perspective of an undead Wraith, however, this doesn’t mean your safe from the sounds of it.

The original Wraith: The Oblivion was a tabletop role playing game (RPG) created in 1994. As a ghost stuck in a grim realm players could then try to ascend into a better afterlife or succumb to the Oblivion (with plenty of complicated gameplay in between). It remains to be seen how closely the studio tries to stick to this.

Apex Construct Oculus QUEST

“I am a massive fan of games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Alien: Isolation, and have always felt that the kind of narrative-driven, exploration-focused horror these titles deliver would be perfect for VR,” said Erik Odeldahl, Creative Director at Fast Travel Games in a statement.

Sean Greaney, Brand Manager for World of Darkness at Paradox Interactive added: “We’re excited to be taking our first steps from the Skinlands toward Stygia in World of Darkness version 5 in such an innovative and appropriate medium.

Currently, there’s no official release date but Fast Travel Games has said Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife will support ‘all major VR platforms’. As for actual gameplay, you’ll have to wait until August for a glimpse of the project, likely in time for the digital Gamescom Now event – which takes place between 27th -30th.

As and when further details arise for Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife, VRFocus will let you know.

‘Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife’ to Release in Spring 2021, More Gameplay Revealed

Fast Travel Games, the studio behind Apex Construct (2018) and Budget Cuts 2 (2019), are bringing their ‘World of Darkness’ horror game Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife to all major VR platforms this spring. Now the studio has served up a fresh gameplay video featuring the mysterious ‘Shadow’ who guides you.

Update (January 28th, 2021):  Fast Travel Games released a new video (linked above and below the article) that shoes off the game’s mysterious ‘Shadow’ character. Here’s how the studio describes it.

“As a Wraith in Afterlife, you will have a companion of sorts by your side called ‘the Shadow’. The Shadow is a manifestation of your dark subconscious – call it the devil on the shoulder, or the little voice in the back of your head telling you to do the things you really shouldn’t. So, while he functions as a guide through the game… should you really trust him?”

Now the studio says it is targeting spring 2021, which may still fit within its ‘Early 2021’ launch window.

Update (December 17th, 2020)Fast Travel Games published some new gameplay footage today, showing off the level of polish coming to Quest 2 and further detailing some of the game’s mechanics.

Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife is set launch sometime in early 2021 on all the major VR headsets, which includes SteamVR, the Oculus Store for Quest and Rift (supporting cross-buy), and PlayStation VR.

We’ve time-linked the video below where Quest 2 footage is highlighted. Developer Andreas Juliusson also speaks a bit about what to expect, including special powers, the game’s World of Darkness setting, and the mystery of why and how you’ve become a ghostly apparition.

Original Article (June 9th, 2020): Fans of the World of Darkness universe and its many tabletop role-playing games are no doubt familiar with Vampire: The Masquerade and Werewolf: The Apocalypse.

Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife is said to follow in the footsteps of its 1994-era tabletop RPG namesake by placing you in the modern Barclay Mansion and putting you in the ghostly shoes of a Wraith who unravels the mysteries “that await beyond the Shroud.”

Erik Odeldahl, Creative Director at Fast Travel Games, says that horror games such as Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Alien: Isolation have influenced the studio to create a similar “narrative-driven, exploration-focused” horror title in the World of Darkness universe.

The game, which doesn’t have a release date yet, is slated to arrive on “all major VR platforms,” Fast Travel says.

A gameplay reveal and details are said to arrive during Gamescom Now, which starts August 27th. Hopefully we’ll be getting a release date then too.
