How to Watch the 2018 Winter Olympics in VR

The 2018 Winter Olympics is about to kick off in PyeongChang, South Korea today, and this year you’ll be able to watch a total of 30 events in VR, shared across live and on-demand 360/180 recordings.

NBC has partnered with Intel to provide more than 50 hours of live virtual reality coverage through the NBC Sports VR app. On-demand video will be open to the public, while live streaming video will require you to authenticate your subscription with your pay TV provider, i.e. cable, satellite or digital operator.

Remarkably, neither Oculus Rift nor HTC Vive are on the list below, as only Samsung Gear VR, Google Cardboard, Google Daydream, and Windows ‘MR’ VR headsets have access.

VR Headsets Required

It appears that the apps listed above are also locked to the United States region – likely due to licensing issues. We’ll be investigating work-arounds for non-US viewers, and update should we find any (outside VPN).

Check out the full schedule below (all times in EST):

This Week In VR Sport: VR Baseball Training, Live VR Olympics In Europe And New BT Sport VR App On The Way

The world of sport and the world of virtual reality (VR) keep colliding, and as always, we’ve got the very latest sports news rounded up for you right here. This week we’ve seen professional-grade baseball trainers, the opportunity for Europeans to watch the Olympics in VR, and a new application coming as the result of the BT Infinity Lab competition.

Make sure to check back on VRFocus every week at the same time for more of the latest VR sports news.

Monsterful VR Debut Baseball Batting Trainer

Training in VR is nothing new, but supplying the kind of software and hardware necessary for a professional grade VR baseball batting trainer and simulator? That’s a bit more difficult than many other sports, and yet that hasn’t stopped Monsterful VR from creating RibeeVR, the performance training tech that’s built for professionals.

Baseball America reports that Former Mariners scount and current Future Stars Series CEO Jeremy Booth was skeptical of the technology at first, but reflecting on his first experience he said; “It was realistic, it was in a stadium, you could center, you could hear the crowd noise, you could see the release point, the delivery–everything was game-like. And it certainly felt like the reaction time of 95 (mph). It certainly felt like it.”

Monsterful are recreating professional pitchers in the software, to give batters practising the very steepest possible challenge.

Watch Winter Olympics Live In VR With Eurosport

The Olympic Winter Games are right around the corner, and now Eurosport have confirmed that they’ll be the ones offering the first ever live VR coverage of the event in Europe. Users will be able to download the Winter Olympics Eurosport VR app and will be able to enjoy more than 50 hours of live event coverage.

Not every sport will be available, but there’s a good selection, including skiing, curling, skating, snowboarding and many more, in addition to the all-important opening and closing ceremonies. Of course the experience will be delivered by Intel, who we already knew would be supplying VR coverage of the games.

Advanced Television reports that Ralph Rivera, Managing Director of Eurosport Digital has said; “Discovery has set out to transform the Olympic Winter Games viewing experience, so being able to offer viewers across Europe every minute of the Games and now every angle of some of the biggest events in live VR goes a long way to delivering this promise. We want to do this to engage more people, on more screens, with the Games than ever before, offering something new to attract younger audiences. In this way, we hope to make fans care even more about the sports they are passionate about.”

Watching Sport In VR Wins BT Infinity Lab

Anyone who enjoys watching TV and movies in VR will have already experienced the simple pleasure of being able to do it in a completely new place, whether that’s sitting on a giant mushroom or sat in a cosy lodge on a mountainside. Now, BT’s Infinity Lab competition has chosen a winner, and it’s a communal sport viewing experience for friends and families who aren’t in the same room.

In a virtual room, families and friends will be able to watch the action together while chatting and interacting as if they were in the room together. Sceenic, the name of the application, will be trialled by BT Sport for potential future use.

BT Sport Chief Operating Officer, Jamie Hindhaugh, has said; “Sceenic reflects what BT Sport is all about – which is bringing our audiences into our content, driving engagement and being a broadcaster that speaks with our fans.”

This Week in VR Sport: Live VR Sports Streaming and Floyd Mayweather’s VR Training

The world of sport just can’t get enough of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). Sports are usually the first to adapt to new technologies, and broadcasters all over the world are jumping on the VR streaming bandwagon, as you’ll read below.

But VR isn’t just good for viewing sport, as Floyd Mayweather’s boxing and fitness gyms reveal VR training, which we’ve gone into more detail about below.

The adoption of the technology is definitely exciting, and we are of course seeing brand new announcements every week. For more sports news, read on below…

Virtex Arena Brings AR to the Super Bowl

During the downtime between plays, it’s easy to get impatient. Heck, you want to see your team toss around the old pig skin, not wait for them to slowly get into position. If you’re sick of waiting around when watching your favourite game of good old American Football, then the Virtex Arena app just might be for you.

The Virtex Arena app allows you to play a small football kicking videogame which you can play simultaneously with other impatient fans. The AR videogame takes place on the actual field, and the app adjusts according to where you are in the stadium. Users can also play the game at home, of course!

The app also keeps you updated on scores and who’s winning, to keep players engaged in both games going on.

Floyd Mayweather’s Gyms Reveal VR Training

Floyd Mayweather

Displayed at CES 2018, Las Vegas, Floyd Mayweather’s latest venture is a VR Training program to assist those who can’t quite make it out to the gym.

Mayweather’s new gym chain is opening up in Los Angeles, the VR training program spans a full twelve week program of sessions which feature the man himself as your coach and personal trainer.

“Boxing gave me a platform to become a world-class athlete, and I’m using those skills to build a global fitness platform that will help people to train better and smarter,” explains Mayweather. “I’ve seen how the fitness industry has evolved; and now we’re taking it to the next level, not only by incorporating the workouts that I used throughout my career, but also by investing in cutting-edge technology and making that a core part of our offering.”

The app uses a HTC Vive headset and controllers, and we hope we can get something similar on our home VR devices soon.

NBC to Live-Stream 2018 Winter Olympics in VR

For the very first time you’ll be able to view the Olympics live in VR in the US. This year, the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea will be streamed live to VR viewers in the US.

This is the very first time the Winter Olympics has been recorded in VR. In 2016, NBC did make available over 85 hours of VR content for the Rio Olympics, but most of that delayed by a day, instead of live streamed.

Americans interested will have to be NBC subscribers, mind. Not everything in life is free!

Powered by Intel True VR, users will be able look around stadiums in 360-degrees, and you’ll be able to watch VR replays of all previously streamed events during the games.

Variety reports that the VR schedule will include the opening ceremony, closing ceremony, alpine skiing, curling, snowboarding, figure skating and more.

“The Olympics have long been an opportunity to showcase emerging media technology,” Gary Zenkel, president of NBC Olympics, said in a statement. “With the help of Intel’s industry-leading virtual reality technology, NBC Olympics will deliver a transformative experience that will bring to Olympic fans an entirely new perspective on the speed, thrills, and excitement of an Olympic Winter Games.”

There’s lots of exciting things happening in the sporting world, for all of the latest on sports in VR or AR, make sure to keep reading VRFocus.
