Drop Dead Dev Becomes Soul Assembly, Focuses Efforts on VR & Metaverse

Virtual reality (VR) shooters Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister and Drop Dead: Dual Strike Edition were the work of UK-based developer Pixel Toys, in an announcement today the XR team has been spun out to form Soul Assembly. This new studio will focus on VR and the metaverse, revealing that two projects are in the works.

Soul Assembly will be led by ex Codemasters and Jagex veteran David Solari, joined by David Osbourn (Codemasters and Activision) and Tony Williams (Codemasters and Take-Two Interactive) in executive positions. They’ll be focusing their efforts solely on VR has the industry continues to maintain momentum.

“With over 30 talented developers and two fantastic games we are thrilled to be one of the leading developers of VR and the metaverse,” said Solari in a statement. “Building on that momentum we have 2 further ambitious and exciting projects in development which we plan to launch before the end of the year.”

No further details were given as to what these projects could be but on the Soul Assembly website, there is a single spooky image of a house with “coming soon” across it. That image is titled “zombie cabin” which tends to suggest Soul Assembly is keeping with its undead heritage for another zombie-filled shooter.

As Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister and Drop Dead: Dual Strike Edition are both action-heavy VR experiences there’s a good chance this teased project may take a similar route. A 2022 launch window also means there shouldn’t be too long to wait to find out more.

Soul Assembly is also looking to grow its team with several job vacancies on its website. As details regarding the 2 new virtual reality projects surface, gmw3 will continue to keep you updated.

The VR Drop: March VR Variety

2022 is starting to kick into gear when it comes to virtual reality (VR) videogame launches. Next week is a perfect example with titles arriving for most headsets that aren’t all first-person shooters. There are some guns alongside pirates, musical flair, and bizarre mysteries to uncover. So take a look at what’s just around the corner.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister

Buccaneers! – Skyward Digital

Last week Skyward Digital released Buccaneers! The New Age of Piracy a free-to-play demo for its upcoming pirate adventure. Buccaneers! arrives this coming week, a single-player RPG where you become a fearsome captain waging naval warfare, with a campaign where you sign up with either the British, French or Spanish empires or the Buccaneers’ League. Engage in tense naval and land battles whilst customising your ship with new paint schemes, cannons and upgrades. Fight ship-to-ship combat then board enemy vessels and assault forts to loot the best treasure.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister – Pixel Toys

Having released Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister as a Meta Quest platform exclusive back in 2020 know it’s the turn of PC VR players. This is a non-stop action-adventure where you play the role of Sister Ophelia, a veteran Sister of Battle who is searching for her long lost twin sister whilst fighting to save all of humanity. Choose from Bolters, Plasma Pistols, Flamers, Las Rifles, Power Swords and Chainswords as you cut down heretics, Chaos Space Marines and even bigger foes.

Virtuoso

Virtuoso – Really Interactive

Utilise the six instruments to record tracks and share them with the community.

République: Anniversary Edition – Camouflaj

The mobile stealth adventure arrived back in 2013 and in the following years Camouflaj expanded support to VR headsets like Gear VR and Oculus Go. After a long wait, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR are finally getting support with République: Anniversary Edition. The 10-hour campaign puts the fate of Hope, a hacker, in your hands, guiding her by viewing each level through security cameras. The main difference with this anniversary edition is the addition of a developer’s commentary.

  • Supported platform(s): PlayStation VR
  • Launch date: 10th March
Hitchhiker

HitchHiker: A Mystery Game – Mad About Pandas

Last on the list for next week’s launch collection is HitchHiker: A Mystery Game. As the title suggests, you play a hitchhiker grabbing rides from strangers. With no memory of who you are the goal is to uncover your backstory by jumping in cars, visiting new locations and finding clues.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister Heads to PC VR in March

Pixel Toys released Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister as a Meta Quest platform exclusive back in 2020, where you could unleash your wrath against the forces of Chaos. As gmw3 reported back in January, the title was stencilled in for its Steam release on the 12th before being delayed. Today, the studio has confirmed that the PC VR edition of Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister will now arrive in March.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister

The developer hasn’t said if the PC version will include any improvements such as upgraded graphics but from the new trailer (seen below) they certainly so seem of a higher quality than the Quest 2 videogame. However, Pixel Toys has confirmed that the Steam version will include all the content updates the Quest title has received including Last Bastion, the co-op multiplayer mode.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister is a non-stop action-adventure where you play the role of Sister Ophelia, a veteran Sister of Battle who is searching for her long lost twin sister whilst fighting to save all of humanity. As Ophelia you have access to a brutal assortment of weapons, being able to switch between close quarters and long-range combat.

Staying completely faithful to the Warhammer universe and its lore, you can choose from Bolters, Plasma Pistols, Flamers, Las Rifles, Power Swords and Chainswords to cut down heretics and Chaos Space Marines. Additionally, you also have access to special abilities to aid each encounter, creating protective force fields or slowing time.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister

Gmw3 reviewed Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister saying: “Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister has some great set piece moments, and the general gameplay is enjoyable throughout. Its action all the way, so there’s not much depth to the experience and no secrets to uncover. Just grab a gun and start blasting, which is no bad thing.”

The Steam version of Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister will launch on 8th March 2022 for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality headsets; priced at £14.99 GBP/ $19.99 USD. For further updates keep reading gmw3.

The VR Drop: A New Year Variety Pack

The VR Drop

Welcome to the first VR Drop of 2022! You might still be playing all your new videogames from the festive season but there are more on the way next week. In a rare turn of events, Meta Quest and PlayStation VR titles are nowhere to be seen at the moment, so it’s all about PC VR gaming.

Fishing Adventure VR

Fishing Adventure VR – Ultimate VR

Arriving today, Fishing Adventure VR is being published by Ultimate Games, the same team behind the Ultimate Fishing Simulator series so it has got some pedigree. Fishing Adventure VR takes you to 7 open locales around the US and Hawaii where you can catch over 30 species of fish. While you can rest and enjoy a tranquil spot of fishing, the videogame also features quests for those who like a more focused goal.

The Shore VR – Ares Dragonis

Indie developer Ares Dragonis first launched The Shore as a standard PC title last year, receiving a “mostly positive” rating for this atmospheric videogame based on the works of H. P. Lovecraft. Soon it’ll be the turn of PC VR owners to give this Early Access horror title a whirl, taking on the role of Andrew searching for his lost daughter. Along the way, you’ll encounter many of H. P. Lovecraft’s nightmarish creations alongside a variety of puzzles.

The Shore VR

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister – Pixel Toys

Originally a Meta Quest exclusive in 2020, Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister is now being brought to PC VR headsets by Pixel Toys. The narrative adventure casts you as Sister Ophelia, a veteran of the Sisters of Battle. Searching for her long lost twin through countless warzones, you face down heretics and Chaos Space Marines with an arsenal of Bolters, Plasma Pistols, Flamers, Power Swords and more.

Galaxity: Terminal21 VR – MAMMOSSIX Co.

Korean developer MAMMOSSIX launched its virtual world Galaxity back in 2019, filled with mini-games, social chat and avatar customisation options. Next week sees the release of Galaxity: Terminal21 VR, a free-to-play experience based on the largest shopping mall in Bangkok, Thailand. And because it’s set in a shopping mall you can wander around and actually buy things, although it’s unclear what’ll be on offer.

Blast Beat

Blast Beat – GZ Inc.

Time for a rhythm action videogame all about giant bosses in a fantasy world. Blast Beat challenges you to punch your opponents ranged attacks in time with the beat but watch out, these monsters will then come in close to deal more damage, so you’ll have to dodge their melee attacks. Whilst they’re in close you can also unleash a counter attack, all depending on how much of a workout you’d like.

Hoping to find her long-lost twin sister whilst fighting the hordes of chaos you battle corrupt Chaos Space Marines, Daemons, Heretics, and other abominations. As you’d expect from a Warhammer 40k title you’re well equipped for the task with Bolters, Plasma Pistols, Flamers, Las Rifles, Power Swords, and Chainswords to hand. Plus, you’ll have magical Acts of Faith abilities allowing you to push back enemies and objects, create a force field, or slow time.

In addition to the core single-player campaign Pixel Toys has introduced a Horde Mode so players can battle wave after wave of monsters. The recent update added a multiplayer component so that you and a friend can team up and try to survive. To aid your chances every kill earns you resources that can be used to purchase weapons and ammunition.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister Adds Multiplayer Horde Mode

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister

Pixel Toys’ Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister was one of several virtual reality (VR) titles to arrive for Oculus Quest in time for Christmas 2020, enabling Warhammer fans to step into the war-torn universe and battle the forces of Chaos. Today, as part of the Oculus Gaming Showcase, Pixel Toys has announced the launch of its next major update, adding a co-op horde mode.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister

The Last Bastion horde mode launched last month with one map and only playable solo. With the free multiplayer update you and a mate can team up and fight hordes of demons, cultists, Chaos Space Marines and more, surviving against ever greater numbers as the waves progress. To aid your chances every kill earns you resources that can be used to purchase weapons and ammunition. These weapons include classics fans should already be well acquainted with like Bolters, Plasma pistols, Lasguns, Grenade launchers, Grenades, Flamers, Chainswords and Melta guns.

“We’re thrilled to be adding the Last Bastion game mode, delivering a fast and furious co-op experience, that brings players together,” says James Horn, Project Co-Director at Pixel Toys in a statement. “The team have done a huge amount of work supporting players since launch and we look forward to providing even more fantastic content going forward.”

The launch of Last Bastion will feature three maps for you play with more already in development. Pixel Toys says the next batch will arrive in a June update for Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister

“What better way fight of the forces of Chaos, that to bring a friend! We are very proud to be able to bring nonstopaction co-op gameplay to the Last Bastion Horde mode in Warhammer 40,000 Battle Sister,” James Horn, Project Co-Director at Pixel Toys adds.

VRFocus reviewed Warhammer 40,000 Battle Sister saying: “Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister has some great set piece moments, and the general gameplay is enjoyable throughout. Its action all the way, so there’s not much depth to the experience and no secrets to uncover. Just grab a gun and start blasting, which is no bad thing.”

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister is available for Oculus Quest/Quest 2 priced at £22.99 GBP. Check out the new trailer below and for further updates keep reading VRFocus.

Warhammer 40K: Battle Sister Gets A Solo Horde Mode In New Update

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister just got a brand new update that adds a wave-based survival “solo horde mode” called Last Bastion. Co-op for this mode is still in development.

Warhammer 40K: Battle Sister—Last Bastion Solo

According to the update post from developer Pixel Toys, this is part one of the horde updates to the game. Last Bastion Solo is what’s releasing now, with a co-op version that will also introduce a new map to come later on. The new mode is available directly from the main menu.

The goal of the new game mode is to reach the final wave and survive for as long as possible as a heroic last stand. Every kill you get earns coins which can be spent back at the central requisition terminal for better weapons and more ammo. There is also a ranked progression system and leaderboards for high scores.

Here’s what the update post says about the mode:

“Hold out in the Last Bastion, an encampment in the war-torn world of Warhammer 40k, you are surrounded, and cornered on all sides by the ravening hordes of Chaos who throw ever greater forces against you and your team of embattled heroes.

The aim is simple, to survive over a series of waves and rounds, attempting to reach higher levels and ranks, unlocking weapons and competing in global and friends leaderboards for high scores and achievements – Will you survive and claim glory for the Emperor?”

Other patch notes for this update include game balancing tweaks to make it overall a bit easier with players getting a 20% bump to health and decreased delay before health regeneration kicks in. It also regenerates more quickly now as well.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister is available now on Oculus Quest for $30. For more on the game, check out our Warhammer 40K: Battle Sister review and stay tuned to UploadVR.

Warhammer 40K: Battle Sister Blasts Onto Oculus Quest On Dec. 8th

In a blog post today, Facebook announced that Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister, developed by Drop Dead creators Pixel Toy, is slated to hit the Oculus Quest platform on December 8th. A PC VR version for Oculus Rift is planned for next year with other headsets and platforms unconfirmed at this time.

Warhammer Battle Sister seems like one worth watching. Other than the awesome armor designs and impressive visuals, the gunplay looks decent at worst and quite fun at best.

According to the blog post:

“Pixel Toys brings the war-torn world of Warhammer 40,000 to VR for the very first time. Not to miss for fans of the franchise, Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister lets you fight evil as you wield an array of authentic, powerful weapons, raining down destruction on anyone who stands in your way. Mark your calendars: This action-adventure lands on the Quest PlatformDecember 8.”

I haven’t played Battle Sister myself yet, but Jamie Feltham from UploadVR  had some nice things to say. It’s getting co-op multiplayer after launch too! You can watch some gameplay up above or by reading it here:

“I’ll be looking to see how Battle Sisters’s level and encounter design evolves going forward. The first level is a staunch showcase of trench warfare, but as a result it’s funneled through a series of corridors with fairly simple shootouts…”

“There is more to see, though. The demo’s second level starts off with a lengthy walk through your home base, which hints at some deeper narrative elements to come, and the game’s control scheme points to some new abilities. For now, Warhammer 40K: Battle Sister does a good job of rooting you in a lovably clunky universe, and that’s a decent start.”

Warhammer 40K: Battle Sister Multiplayer Coming Around Launch

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister multiplayer support is planned for around launch next month.

The upcoming VR first-person shooter (FPS) will offer a full single-player campaign on release. However, developer Pixel Toys confirmed to UploadVR that there’s one cooperative multiplayer mode planned to either release alongside the campaign or, more likely, “fairly soon after” the initial release.

Warhammer Battle Sister Multiplayer On The Way

“We’ve got a couple of different modes which we’re working on,” James Horn, Creative Lead/Project Director on the project told us. “There’s one which we’re currently prepping for the initial release, which is more down the horde mode line.”

Horde modes are essentially wave-based survival modes. As you can see in our first gameplay video above, Battle Sister has plenty of enemy types ideal for that mode. Horn explained that the co-op mode will be limited to two players at first, but there are hopes to maybe bring it to four players. As for competitive modes? There’s a possibility those arrive in the new year.

“The team who desperately wants to do PVP as well,” Horn continued. “There’s a couple of levels that particularly have that kind of Goldeneye, Aztec feel about them.”

He went on to explain that the desire to add multiplayer had been brought about by the surprise success of adding similar modes to Drop Dead.

Battle Sister is aiming for launch on Quest in December, with other platforms to follow in 2021. We’ll have more from our interview with Pixel Toys very soon, so keep an eye out and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel. What do you want to see out of Warhammer Battle Sister multiplayer?
