VR’s Favorite Mini Golf Game is Getting a ‘Wallace & Gromit’ Course This Summer

Mighty Coconut, developer of indie VR hit Walkabout Mini Golf (2020), announced it’s partnering with Wallace & Gromit creators Aardman to bring a course inspired by the very same British boffin and canine pair.

The course is set to feature 18 easy mode and hard mode holes, and commemorative in-game putter and themed avatars all set in the world of Wallace & Gromit, the studio says in a blog post.

There’s no trailer out yet, although Aardman and Mighty Coconut say it will take players to duo’s 62 West Wallaby Street and pack in plenty of “humor, and the clever contraptions that generations have come to love.”

Mighty Coconut has however given us a brief glimpse at the course’s blueprints in a post via X (formerly Twitter), which appears to how the house’s ground floor, top floor, and basement laboratory:

The studio hasn’t announced precisely when it’s launching the Wallace & Gromit-inspired course beyond its ‘Summer 2024’ release window, however we can expect it to come to all supported platforms when it does, including Quest 2/3/Pro, PSVR 2, SteamVR headsets, Pico platforms, as well as iOS devices via Walkabout Mini Golf: Pocket Edition.

This isn’t the first high-profile partnership for the plucky mini golf game, which include courses based on Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, Cyan’s Myst and interactive art installation Meow Wolf. The addition of its Wallace & Gromit paid DLC will make for the studio’s 27th course, following its latest ‘Ice Lair’ course released last week.

Wallace & Gromit is Coming to Quest 2 in ‘Grand Getaway’ Interactive VR Experience

Wallace & Gromit, Britain’s iconic stop-motion duo, are getting their own interactive VR experience on Meta Quest 2 next year, developed by series creator Aardman, Meta, and VR pioneers Atlas V.

Called Wallace & Gromit: The Grand Getaway, the interactive, single player VR experience promises to take fans along with Wallace and Gromit on a summer holiday for what rightfully should be a relaxing beach trip and the chance to test out Wallace’s latest contraption, Auto-Caddy.

The rub: Wallace has his dates mixed up and the two (plus Auto-Caddy) have to rocket off to the other side of the country in just half an hour. And you guessed it: in patented Wallace & Gromit fashion, things probably won’t go to plan.

Launching on Quest 2 in 2023, The Grand Getaway is a co-production between Aardman and the team behind Spheres and Gloomy Eyes at Atlas V in association with No Ghost in London, England and Albyon in Lyon, France.

Finbar Hawkins and Bram Ttwheam are co-directing with the support of Nick Park, creator of Wallace & Gromit, and Merlin Crossingham, creative director of Wallace & Gromit. Ben Whitehead will reprise the voice Wallace following in the footsteps of the late Peter Sallis.

“The entire studio is so excited about this project, which provides us with a perfect opportunity to do what we love – combining memorable characters and engaging storytelling with emerging technologies to offer fans a totally immersive experience,” saod Sean Clarke, Managing Director of Aardman. “For loyal fans of Wallace & Gromit, this will be real wish-fulfilment territory – after watching the characters on screen for decades, they will now have an opportunity to step into their world and play an active role in this new story as it unfolds. For those new to the characters, it’s the ultimate way to get to know them, the humour, and the hijinks that have made them so popular.”

Wallace & Gromit: The Grand Getaway isn’t the duo’s first foray into immersive tech. Aardman launched The Big Fix Up in 2020 for AR-capable smartphones which lets you take part in a real-time story over several weeks.

Wallace & Gromit Are Going on a VR Adventure in 2023

Aardman’s beloved characters Wallace and Gromit will be making a return to the world of XR gaming the animation company has announced today. Working with Atlas V (Battlescar, Madrid Noir, Gloomy Eyes) and Meta, Wallace & Gromit: The Grand Getaway will be coming to Meta Quest 2 next year.

First reported by Variety, Wallace & Gromit: The Grand Getaway will be a brand-new adventure for the duo where they plan to go on holiday. As you might expect things don’t exactly go according to plan.

“Wallace has his dates mixed up – they have to be on the other side of the country in just half an hour!” explains the synopsis. “There’s only one thing for it… they’ll take the Rocket. But a mishap with the controls sends Wallace, Gromit and Auto-Caddy hurtling off course. Will this be a holiday to remember?” Currently, no gameplay details have been released, but with Meta funding the project and Atlas V working with London’s No Ghost and Albyon in Lyon it’s going to be a high quality production

“The entire studio is so excited about this project, which provides us with a perfect opportunity to do what we love – combining memorable characters and engaging storytelling with emerging technologies to offer fans a totally immersive experience,” said Sean Clarke, Managing Director of Aardman in a statement.

Plus, Ben Whitehead will return as the voice of Wallace having taken over from the late Peter Sallis.

“It was challenging for all of us to come together to reach the level of expectations and standards that such an IP demands, but we are convinced that the fans of Wallace & Gromit and the VR community will experience amazing immersive adventures by interacting with these two much-loved characters,” Antoine Cayrol & Arnaud Colinart, Producers and co-founders at Atlas V commented.

Wallace and Gromit’s last big immersive experience was The Big Fix Up, an augmented reality (AR) title where players had to help fix up the duo’s home town of Bristol, UK.
