VRX: Where Are Investors Placing Their Bets In VR And AR?

VRX: Where Are Investors Placing Their Bets In VR And AR?

From media hype to marketing talk, it’s easy to get lost in what’s really happening in XR. On one hand, the barriers to entry are dropping with every technological innovation and XR applications are making waves in enterprise.

On the other, perceived lack of mass consumer adoption is causing some to hold back their efforts, as the industry cautiously navigates the heightened expectations. In such uncertain times, the necessity for companies to understand where and when to invest their resources is becoming increasingly important.

So where are the investors putting their money? Where are the analysts seeing the demand? What do the numbers really tell us?

On Wednesday October 24, VRX hosts a webinar with investors and analysts from HP Tech Ventures, Boost VC and SuperData, to look at where the real opportunities and gaps are to exploit. Putting hype aside to focus on the market realities of immersive reality, the panel of experts will dive deep into the data to decipher what’s real, what’s hype and what the future of XR really looks like.

  • Where’s the majority of investment going – and why?
  • What’s stopping XR advancing as quickly as it could be – and what opportunities does this provide?

Panelists on the webinar feature the people who dedicate their work to understanding where the smart money is going in XR and what real challenges and opportunities are facing the industry.

  • Angelo Del-Priore, Partner, HP Tech Ventures
  • Maddie Callander, Director of Operations, Boost VC
  • Stephanie Llamas, VP of Strategy and Head of XR, SuperData

Google, HTC and SuperData to Discuss Current State of VR & AR in Free Webinar

Twice a year VR Intelligence holds its flagship VRX events, one in San Francisco during December and VRX Europe in May. Occasionally the company holds small events concerning virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies, one of which will be taking place next week featuring Google, HTC and SuperData.

VRX Webinar

The free webinar will see representatives from Google, HTC and SuperData, discuss the latest trends, current challenges and biggest opportunities in VR and AR. They are Vinay Narayan, Vice President, Product and Operations (Americas), HTC Vive; Steven Kan, Head of Global Strategy, AR and VR, Google; and Stephanie Llamas, VP of Strategy and Head of XR, SuperData Research. The webinar will be moderated by Amy Peck, Founder & CEO, EndeavorVR.

There have been a lot of highs and lows of the past 12 months which the group will discuss. From more aggressive sales tactics which has seen VR hardware prices dropped and sales increase, to the increased uptake of AR by developers thanks to open platform releases of ARKit and ARCore.

On the flip side user adoption is still low which is a concern for developers looking to make a profit. CCP Games, an early adopter of VR and one of the most high profile thanks to multiplayer title EVE: Valkyrie made a shock announcement in 2017 that saw the studio leave VR development and close studios.

If you want to check it out the webinar will take place on 19th July at 11am PDT/ 7pm BST. To register for the one hour webinar you’ll need to register here.

Last month saw the final speakers confirmed for the VRX Immersive Enterprise conference, designed for senior business leaders from across the immersive tech industry to come together and focus on opportunities and challenges in enterprise companies. As for the main VRX 2018 event, that’ll take place from 6th-7th December, 2018 at San Francisco. Super Early Bird tickets are still currently available on the official website.

New Report Shows Long-Term Improvements in AR Opportunities

VR Intelligence has been working on a new report into how immersive technology is changing business. The company has teamed up with research firm SuperData and the UK Department of International Trade to produce a white paper on the rise of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (AR).

The report indicates that at present, there is considerable demand for VR solutions and products in enterprise, particularly for applications in healthcare, education, manufacturing and retail. These areas currently make up 70% of immersive tech research, according to the report.

Furthermore, the report predicts that use of VR will continue to rise through until 2020, though projections indicate that MR and AR technologies will be growing at an even faster rate through the projected time period.

The report writers conducted extensive interviews and use-case studies with leading industry figures such as Intel, McLaren Automotive and Heatherwick Studios to gather data about how immersive technology is being used and developed within an enterprise setting.

“A year ago, VR was perhaps perceived as more of a novelty that we were experimenting with. Now, the

exec team and the directors at McLaren can see that VR has become a fundamental part of the design process; and at the other end of the vehicle design journey, a great customer experience too.” Mark Roberts, McLaren

“We started using VR first as a presentation tool for our clients. However, quite quickly we realized that we could use it in our design process.” Ondrej Tichy, Heatherwick Studios

“Augmented reality is going to mature and be a big component of the business landscape eventually.” Frank Soqui, Intel

The full report can be downloaded from the VR Intelligence website.

VRFocus will continue to report on developments within the VR/AR/MR sectors.

VRX and VRIntelligence Produce Report On Interactivity in VR

Researching to virtual reality (VR) is a growing area. We have already seen business and academic research into the impact of immersive technologies such as VR, including research done by IBM. VRX, one of the business-to-business events dedicated to VR has also been involved with the production of a report centred around VR technology.

The white paper, titled The Role of Interactivity in VR Game Development was created by VR Intelligence and the UK Department of International Trade in conjunction with VRX. The report’s aim was to take an in-depth look at the opportunities and challenges in creating a sense of physical presence and interactivity in VR.

The report features contributions from several representatives of well-known companies and brands, such as Tam Armstrong of Polyarc, Pablo Fraile of ARM, Rob Whitehead of Improbable, Jennifer Chavarria of Kite & Lightning and Simon Harris of Supermassive Games.

Key points explored in the paper include; How to best create presence in VR and why interactivity is the key to that, what can be done to increase character and object interaction and take advantage of new technology such as eye tracking and how important audio is to enhancing interactivity.

The paper can be downloaded for free from the VR Intelligence website.

This year’s VRX conference is due to take place on 7th-8th December, 2017 at the Marriot Marquis in San Francisco. Further information can be found on the official VRX website.
