Unity CEO John Riccitiello Hosting Keynote at VRLA

Earlier this month Virtual Reality Los Angeles (VRLA) announced that Justin Roiland, creator of Rick & Morty would be delivering a keynote address at April’s event. That would be taking place on the Saturday, and for the Friday’s address organisers have secured Unity Technologies CEO John Riccitiello.

The Unity videogame engine is one of the most widely used for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) development, most recently launching an experimental build of EditorVR. This allows studio’s to create experiences in VR rather than on a desktop monitor, with a range of customised functions for use with motion controllers like Oculus Touch or HTC Vive.

“Unity is proud to support the industry’s creators whether leading names or those just starting out, and I look forward to sharing more about our vision of VR and AR development at VRLA,” said Riccitiello

“Unity has done so much to support and accelerate the VR ecosystem,” said Adam Levine, co-founder of VRLA. “Were proud to host John as Unity continues its mission to educate and empower the industry and VRLAs vibrant community of VR creators, companies and enthusiasts.”

The expo will take place 14th – 15th April, 2017 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, and will include demos, educational sessions, experimental work and presentations. Registrations have now opened for the VRLA, with the business-focused 2-Day Pro Pass at $299 USD and a 1-Day Pass for Saturday priced at $40.

‘Rick and Morty’ Co-creator to Keynote VRLA Expo 2017 – Save 15% on Tickets

After announcing the launch of a VR studio last year, Justin Roiland, the co-creator of the hit animated show Rick and Morty, is set to deliver the keynote address at VRLA Expo 2017.

vrla-summer-expo-2016-discount-2VRLA Expo is one of the industry’s largest and longest running events. Hosted once again this year at the Los Angeles Convention Center, April 14th & 15th, VRLA promises that the 2017 Expo will be the biggest yet, gathering together leading names in the VR industry for two days of demos, educational sessions, experimental work, keynote presentations, and an exhibit floor featuring industry leading innovators, influencers, creatives, manufacturers and technology developers. Road to VR will be reporting from the event.

At VRLA Expo 2017, Justin Roiland will take to the stage, apparently with his trademarked off-beat humor, to talk about the future of VR.

What does the future of VR hold? Will there be more wizard games? Are grandmas real? What IS a wizard really? Are there wizard grandmas? How does this factor into VR? I did all this (simple) math and then made a power point presentation that I **think** maaaayyybe has these questions (and more) all figured out. Please come to my incredible keynote address on the state of VR! You juuuust might learn something, maybe, I don’t know. I can’t make any promises on that because you may already know everything.

Roiland is known as being the co-creator (and voices) of the zany Rick and Morty, but his growing interest in virtual reality over the last few years has culminated in the founding of VR game studio Squanchtendo, headed by Roiland and former Epic Games producer Tanya Watson.

squanchtendo-vr-studio-justin-roiland-tanya-watsonThe studio’s first release, Accounting, is a short, free demo for the HTC Vive which heavily features Roiland’s oddball comedy (and his voice acting chops).

Rick and Morty, as it turns out, is getting the VR treatment too, thanks to a forthcoming collaboration with one of VR’s most successful indie VR studios, Owlchemy Labs, who is developing Rick and Morty Simulator: Virtual Rick-ality.

VRLA Expo 2017 is currently accepting applications for its Indie Zone, which offers complimentary exhibition space to innovative small teams who have raised less than $500,000 in venture capital funding, or generated less than less than that amount in revenue.

Co-Creator of Rick & Morty and Accounting Justin Roiland Confirmed as Keynote Speaker for VRLA

This April will see the annual Virtual Reality Los Angeles (VRLA) event return for 2017, and today organisers have announced Justin Roiland, creator of Rick & Morty on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, will deliver Saturday’s keynote address.

While Roiland is most synonymous with the aforementioned cartoon he’s also dived into the VR industry establishing studio Squanchtendo, and launching Accounting on HTC Vive created in collaboration with Crows Crows Crows. For the keynote he’ll discuss the surreally funny possibilities of VR. “What does the future of VR hold? Will there be more wizard games? Are grandmas real? What IS a wizard really? Are there wizard grandmas? How does this factor into VR? I did all this (simple) math and then made a power point presentation that I **think** maaaayyybe has these questions (and more) all figured out,” comments Roiland in a statement. “Please come to my incredible keynote address on the state of VR! You juuuust might learn something, maybe, I don’t know. I can’t make any promises on that because you may already know everything.”

Registrations have now opened for the VRLA, with the business-focused 2-Day Pro Pass at $299 USD and a 1-Day Pass for Saturday priced at $40.

“This is the third year of VRLA, and with each event we’ve grown in size and scope. It’s so exciting to serve both the industry and developers who make this whole thing go, as well as the VR-curious enthusiasts who want to see what it’s all about. That we can put Justin Roiland on the same stage as some of the industry’s greatest technical thinkers is a treat, and a testament to the support the community has shown us,” said event co-founder John Root.

The expo will take place 14th – 15th April, 2017 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, and will include demos, educational sessions, experimental work and presentations. For further updates on the event keep reading VRFocus.

Rick & Morty Co-Creator Justin Roiland To Give VRLA Keynote, Tickets On Sale Now

Justin Roiland, co-creator of Rick and Morty, loves VR so much he’s prepared to stand up in front of an audience and talk all about it.

Roiland is Saturday’s keynote speaker for the 2017 VRLA Expo, which runs from April 14th – 15th at the Los Angeles Convention Center, the same venue in which E3 takes place every year. Though he’s best known for his popular animated series, Roiland is also enthusiastic about the future of VR, having formed his own studio, Squanchtendo, which released the utterly bizarre Accounting on the HTC Vive last year. Rick and Morty is also making its way into VR with the help of Job Simulator dev Owlchemy Labs.

As for what to expect from Roiland’s talk? Well, we’ll let him answer that for you:

“What does the future of VR hold? Will there be more wizard games? Are grandmas real? What IS a wizard really? Are there wizard grandmas? How does this factor into VR? I did all this (simple) math and then made a power point “presentation that I **think** maaaayyybe has these questions (and more) all figured out. Please come to my incredible keynote address on the state of VR! You juuuust might learn something, maybe, I don’t know. I can’t make any promises on that because you may already know everything.”

Tickets for VRLA, meanwhile, are now on sale. This edition of the event features plenty of talks and sessions for VR veterans along with an expo floor where you can try a range of new VR experiences. Indie developers with less than $500,000 in funding can also apply for a spot in this year’s Indie Zone, a complimentary exhibition space for promising projects.

A business-focused 2-Day Pro Pass is available for $299 and a 1-Day Pass for a Saturday ticket is priced at $40. VRLA has become one of the largest, if not the largest, VR-focused conferences since it was started as a meetup in April 2014. If you want to go, the code VRLAupload should provide 15% off.

That first meetup saw a couple hundred people attend with exhibitors including Epson with its Moverio, an early AR headset, as well as VR California-based VR software developers like Kite & Lightning, High Fidelity, Holden Link and E McNeill. Kite & Lightning and High Fidelity have each received significant funding since that first meetup while Link and McNeill have released multiple games. Epson continues to develop its AR glasses, releasing the BT-300 last year.

Since that first meetup the conference has grown into larger and larger venues with each passing event, offering a chance for L.A.’s vibrant creative community to discover some of the latest VR content and equipment, with L.A.-based studios like Survios using the event to publicly reveal their game Raw Data. By August last year, VRLA had grown to 6,000 people. 10,000 are expected at the next conference in what is again expected to be the largest VRLA event yet.

“There’s thousands and thousands of people that have been making content for other mediums, and now they’re looking at VR as the future of their business,” said Cosmo Sharf, one of VRLA’s co-founders. “We’re close to those people.”

We’ll see you there.

VRLA 2017 Expo Dated, Greatly Expanded

One of the premier virtual reality (VR) event series, VRLA (Virtual Reality Los Angeles) is to return once again in 2017. The popular convention which this year added an additional event creating a ‘Summer’ and ‘Winter’ expo has confirmed the date for their next expo in 2017.

vrla_header

Promising even more guests, exhibitors and VR installations the two day expo is moving to a greatly expanded space at the LA Convention Center to cope with, what the organisers are calling, an “overwhelming demand”. The event will take place across Friday April 14th and Saturday April 15th 2017.

VRLA also issued an update on their next session at the VRLA School series of VR educational discussions. Taking place in a couple of weeks on Saturday September 24th 2016 at the Creative Technology Center, this session will deal with interdisciplinary design thinking, the release noting that it will specifically deal with “architectural processes”.

Tickets for the event are on sale from today for $29 (USD) from Eventbrite, where you can find more information about the event.

VRFocus will bring you more information about VRLA’s expo and events soon.
