KT Corp Announces VR Centre In Malaysia

South Korea’s biggest telecommunications company, KT Corp has announced plans to launch its first overseas virtual reality (VR) business, revealing that it intends to open a VR centre in Malaysia as part of a broader effort to expand its reach in the global information and communications technology market.

KT Corp have signed an agreement with Malaysia’s Iskandar Innovations Sdn Bhd (IISB) in order to open an VR centre in the southern state of Johor. The VR centre will be located in the international shopping area near Legoland Malaysia.

The area is already a popular tourist destination, located in the special economic region of Iskandar Malaysia, which borders with Singapore.

“We are making a significant first step in pursuing cooperative endeavour with IISB and introducing our expertise in VR business,” said Yoon Kyoung-Lim, head of KT’s Global Business Office. “KT will spare no effort or investment to successfully carry out the VR business in Malaysia.”

Datuk Khairil Anwar Ahmad of Iskandar Innovations Berhad (IIB), the parent firm of IISB, said, “I believe our cooperation will lead to the development of new solutions beyond VR and AR (augmented reality). The VR center to be set up by our two companies signals the beginning of a long partnership with KT.”

KT corp has previously been involved in VR with the launch of two VR theme parks earlier this year in Seoul, South Korea, which were launched under the VRIGHT brand name in partnership with retail chain operator GS Retail.

The company is planning to further develop its VR interests by franchising the VRIGHT brand both in South Korea and overseas. KT Corp also has plans for developing immersive media and shopping services using VR and augmented reality (AR).

Recently KT Chairman Hwang Chang-Gyu said that KT Corp would soon launch VR Theatre, a VR streaming service on its IPTV platform.

World War Toons And Metal Slug Join Forces For New VR Arcade Experiences

Los Angeles-based developer Studio Roqovan, the team behind the virtual reality (VR) title World War Toons for PlayStation VR, have revealed a new project in the form of a World War Toons + Metal Slug VR Arcade game (WWT:MSVR). This upcoming room scale first-person shooter (FPS) VR action title will see the humorous take on the Second World War and it’s cast of eccentric characters being reinforced by characters from the popular Metal Slug series.

“We are extremely blessed to get to work with the Metal Slug brand to feature them in the world of World War Toons,” States James Chung, CEO of developer Roqovan. “This game is a love letter to all World War Toons and Metal Slug fans out there. We’ve been working hard for months to recreate the essence of what makes a great Metal Slug game within World War Toons universe. Translating those design philosophies to VR has been an amazing experience”.

Currently a working title, WWT:MSVR will combine what players known and love about World War Toons and the Metal Slug series and offer a new experience like nothing fans have ever seen before in a VR arcade title. The title is known for its bright colours, solid graphics and action packed multiplayer action. Having received a number of content updates following its release, World War Toons has gone on to become a fairly popular VR title.

Another key party in the development of this new experience is Korea Telecom Corporation (KT Corporation) who are Korea’s largest telecommunications service provider. Kyounglim Yun, President of KT Corporation commented on the announcement saying: “Because of the WWT:MSVR project, content service from KT’s experience-based media such as VR arcade games will reach fans of the franchise directly. KT is committed to bringing meaningful and popular IPs into the market beyond this title with future direction of applying 5G technology to these contents.”

The team at Studio Roqovan are also working with SNK Corporation on the title who are the creators of the famous Metal Slug series. “We are very happy to finally announce the fruit of our effort with Roqovan. Seeing the Metal Slug characters in the world of World War Toons gives us great pleasure.” says Koichi Toyama, Company President of SNK Corporation. “It’s wonderful to see our first collaboration finally unveiled to the public. Currently in development, WWT:MSVR is planned to launch first at KT’s VR Arcades called VRIGHT in Q1 of 2019. This will include the first mission and future missions that expand the title and further the gameplay experience will release soon after. As Chung explains: “This is just the beginning of the story for World War Toons and Metal Slug. Now is a great time to be a fan of the franchise, we have a lot more in store.”

Seoul Gets Another VR Theme Park

The idea of a virtual reality (VR) theme park is one that has been gaining traction as location-based VR centres open up all over the glove. Instead of offering up just one VR set-up or experience, VR theme parks host a range of immersive activities for visitors. South Korea has shown it is still aiming to be on the cutting edge of this technology trend with the launch of a VR park called VRIGHT.

The new park is part of a joint venture between telecoms company KT Corp and GS Retail, and is the second such park to emerge from the partnership. It will be located near the main gate of Konkuk University.

The park will feature roughly 30 new videogames, VR experiences and rides, many of which have been developed in partnership with leading Korean developers, such as Smilegate and Appnori. The rooms that contain the experiences will be priced from 5,000 won (roughly $4.50 USD) up to 49,000 won per use, or per hour depending on the nature of the experience.

Koh Yoon-Jeon, chief of KT’s future business development unit, shared: “We will strengthen partnerships with content creators, simulator manufacturers and other small and medium-sized enterprises at home and abroad.”

The previous VRIGHT park was opened in Sinchon, new Yonsei University in western Seoul. The VR theme park has seen over 18,000 visitors since it was opened in March, 2018. The park has two floors and offers a range of VR attractions and activities, including the two headline experiences, Special Force VR: universal War, a first-person sci-fi shooter and HADO, a multiplayer augmented reality (AR) title tat plays like dodgeball.

The two companies have announced plans to open further VRIGHT parks this year, which will operate under the management of KT Corp, with further plans to franchise the brand in 2019. VRFocus will continue to keep you informed on new developments in location-based VR.

By taking all the latest information and communication technologies (ICT), including fifth-generation (5G) networks, VR and augmented reality (AR), with GS Retail’s expertise in operating off-line retail spaces and its distribution business, VRIGHT is leveraging a lot of technology to become a massive investment for the two companies. KT Corp is hoping that VRIGHT will hit a target of an annual revenue of 100 billion won (KRW) by 2020, by when the country’s immersive media market is expect to hit on trillion won in value.

“KT is leading innovations in VR and AR technologies to develop and introduce next-generation services for its immersive media business,” said Koh Yoon-Jeon, Chief of KT’s Future Business Development Unit. “We will strengthen partnerships with content creators, simulator manufacturers and other small and medium-sized enterprises at home and abroad.”

VRIGHT has already launched with a soft opening in the form of a week long preview available to select university students and members of the Korea Tourist Guide Association (KOTGA). The new VR park will open to the general public at noon, local time, on July 6th and is said to feature over 30 new gaming experiences, rides and immersive experiences in partnership with leading Korean videogame developers including Smilegate and Appnori. Each activity at VRIGHT will be priced from 5,000 won to 49,000 won per use or hour.

KT Corp and GS Retail opened their first join venture VRIGHT in March in Sinchon, near Yonsei University in western Seoul. The venue is a two-floor theme park which has attracted more than 18,000 visitors since it opened and is now said to be an entertainment hotspot for young people. KT Corp is said to open more VRIGHT parks this year under its direct management. The company is planning to franchise its VR entertainment business next year after developing a business model to sell its VR content and platforms to individual operators in both South Korea and overseas at appropriate prices.
