VRCade Terminal 17 key artIn Terminal 17, players will form an 8-person squad of an elite extermination team who has been tasked with eliminating alien insects on a remote facility on a distant planet known as Terminal 17. The title uses the latest graphical technology by Nvidia along with new features introduced in Unity 2017.1 to allow for higher resolution and better performance.

Terminal 17 was designed from the ground up to maximize the extensive capabilities of the VRcade Arena and our Attraction Management Platform (AMP),” said Kevin Vitale, VRstudios’ CEO. “VRstudios’ is committed to using the best available tools and partnering with VR industry leaders like NVIDIA to create exciting next generation experiences.”

Players who take part in Terminal 17 will be able to physically walk around the VRcade Arena, or use a variety of transport methods. In-game voice chat is available to allow players to coordinate attacks or work together to solve puzzles.

VRcade Arena screenshotAMP integrates first- and third-party hardware and software while providing a comprehensive support and operational environment for entertainment venue owners and operators. Designed to enable easy installation and efficient operations, including support of day-to-day functions required by the facilities’ technicians, operators, and managers, AMP gives businesses and individuals the tools to easily operate their VR attraction, manage hardware, software, user profiles and content, gather important data and analytics and view valuable operational reports.

The VRcade Arena has been specifically designed for commercial entertainment destinations, such as theme & amusement parks, family entertainment centers, cinemas and casinos. AMP allows attraction owners and operators to increase their Return on Investment (ROI) through informed decisions about VR as a part of their business. Protecting their investment, AMP supports the integration of industry standards, innovative technologies and content as they become available.

“We are excited to release the VRcade Arena, delivering on an original vision of the company conceptualized over five years ago,” said Dave Ruddell, VRstudios’ cofounder and Chief Architect. “From our 40+ VRcade systems installed around the world, we have learned what it takes to build and manage an arena-class product that can push the limits and best practices of the growing LBE industry. The VRcade Arena enables an exciting new level of immersive out-of-home experiences for everyone, from casual VR enthusiasts to serious eSports competitors.”

Following a debut collaboration with Dave and Busters in 2015, VRstudios plans to offer a robust catalog of gaming experiences for the VRcade Arena. The system will ship with content specifically designed to leverage the unique features that can only be experienced in a location-based arena-scale system.

The VRcade Arena will also be demonstrated at the 2017 IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions) Expo in Orlando in November 2017, and VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details from VRstudios.

VRcade Arena is a New ‘Warehouse-Scale’ VR Arcade System Offering 8-Person Multiplayer

When laser tag came into arcades and theme parks around the world in the 80s and 90s, a new industry of custom, commercial-grade laser tag hardware was born—coincidentally the same point in time when VR experienced its first massive hype cycle and went back into proverbial hybernation. Now that VR is back, location-based entertainment (LBE) facilities are eyeing virtual reality as ‘the next laser tag’, a place where a group of friends could go and experience something unique together. Enter VRstudios.

VRstudios, the Seattle-based global provider of VR arcade equipment, today announced the release of a new system called VRcade Arena which bills itself as a wireless ‘warehouse-scale’ VR platform that can provide multiplayer games and experiences for up to eight simultaneous users. Offered as a turnkey VR solution for businesses, VRcade Arena is built on the company’s proprietary Attraction Management Platform (AMP) that provides content, user analytics, and software/hardware integration of 1st and 3rd party equipment.

Designed for amusement parks, family entertainment centers, cinemas and casinos, VRcade Arena was created to make setting up and maintaining a multiplayer VR installation an easy task for businesses that otherwise would have to cobble together consumer-grade equipment. To boot, the company also offers users a fully wireless experience together with custom VR headset, and peripherals like pistols and motion controllers.

Dave Ruddell, VRstudios’ cofounder and Chief Architect, says that the company currently operates more than 40 VRcade systems around the world, and that the new VRcade Arena system “enables an exciting new level of immersive out-of-home experiences for everyone, from casual VR enthusiasts to serious eSports competitors.”

The company’s VR system runs on a hardware-agnostic platform, and currently features a number of multiplayer titles including; Time Zombies, Barking Irons, planktOs: Crystal Guardians, and VRcade Drone Storm with the promise of more to come.

The new eight-person, multiplayer system is said to ship with content specifically designed to leverage the unique features that can only be experienced in a location-based ‘arena-scale’ system.

VRStudios Launches New VR Arcade Title VRCade Drone Storm

As covered in the recent 3-part series The Virtual Arena, location-based virtual reality (VR) experiences are becoming increasingly common all over the world. One of the providers of such out-of-home experiences, VRStudios, have just launched a new VR videogame titled ‘VRcade Drone Storm’.

The new experience is advertised as being a multi-player, untethered and free-roaming experience, produced for VRStudios by Archiact VR. The players of VRCade Drone Storm will find themselves in a world where the cities have been overrun by hostile mechanised drones. Players will need to shoot down as many of the enemy drones as possible while dodging enemy fire. High scores are what the players are aiming for as ten waves of drones attack the players as they try and reclaim the city.

VRStudios has been a provider of location-based VR experiences since it’s inception in 2014. The company currently provides VR arcades at sites in 12 different countries all over the world, offering a solution that is simple to set up and maintain, making it attractive for owners and operators. The company recently installed VR Showdown in Ghost Town, a VR western that was opened earlier this year at Knott’s Berry Farm Boardwalk Arcade, and another on 1st April 2017 at Knott’s Berry Farm Cedar Fair Amusement Park.

It’s not currently know where VRCade Drone Storm will be installed, but VRStudios has worked with many locations, including casinos, cinemas, shopping malls and theme parks such as Universal Orlando, who worked with VRStduios on psychological horror attraction The Repository.

VRstudios Debuting planktOs: Crystal Guardians at Immerse 2016

Virtual reality (VR) company VRstudios, which specialises in commercial entertainment and enterprise solutions, has announced the launch today of a family friendly title called planktOs: Crystal Guardians. Along with the launch the company will be debuting the videogame at this weeks Immerse Technology Summit 2016.

Created using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine, planktOs: Crystal Guardians has been a collaborative effort between VRstudios’ subsidiary VRcade, Blot Interactive and Syndicate 17.

VRstudios - planktOs

planktOs: Crystal Guardians is a bubble-blasting experience in which players are charged with the task of protecting precious crystals from tainted fish. By purging the fish with a jet stream of bubbles, individuals or teams can compete for the highest score across three different levels of difficulty.

“Many VR games today involve violent first-person shooter content,” said Charles Herrick, CEO of VRstudios. “With planktOs, players use bubbles not bullets. We’re bringing an extremely fun, positive and playful game to all sorts of VR tastes.

“It honestly feels like you are submerged in an amazing underwater landscape,” added Herrick.

Chanel Summers, co-founder of Syndicate 17 and also an industry pioneer in the field of interactive audio, added, “planktOs is a deeply charming and captivating game that illustrates how VRstudios is surpassing other immersive entertainment through its superior technology and creative content partnerships.”

Over the course of 2016 VRstudios has been rapidly expanding its platform across the world. In April the company partnered with Korean firm Simuline to offer its tech regions of the world such as Korea, Africa, and the Middle East. More recently in September VRstudios announced further global expansion by revealing new customers in France, Russia and Italy.

“Our ‘planktOs: Crystal Guardians’ VR game, with its focus on family fun, will broaden the opportunity for our entertainment customers and partners to better serve a diverse set of customers,” said Mary Jesse, Chief Strategy Officer at VRstudios and a pioneer in immersive location-based entertainment. “VRstudios’ unique approach to VR is helping U.S. and international theme parks, family entertainment centers, arcades and other entertainment venues to grow their revenue and increase customer loyalty.”

VRFocus will continue its coverage of VRstudios, reporting back with any further announcements.

Wide-Area Tracking for VR Arcades with OptiTrack

Brian-NillesOptiTrack premiered a new demo at GDC that shows the extent of their tracking technology precision. They put passive tracking markers on a basketball and football that allowed people to go toss a ball back and forth to each other in VR.

He also talked about OptiTrack being used for motion and facial capture for AAA studios, and for indoor GPS systems for robots and drones. There are a number of yet-to-be announced VR Arcade solutions out there that are pushing the limits of OptiTrack’s technology, and Brian gives us an idea of what’s possible by saying that he’s seen solutions that use as many as 75 HMDs within a space up to 165ft x 120ft.

Here’s a video of their Basketball demo that premiered at GDC:
