Quest Is Getting Another Table Tennis Game

Another table tennis game is coming to Meta Quest (formerly Oculus Quest) soon.

VR Ping Pong Pro is set to arrive on the platform on May 26 and is now listed in the coming soon section of the store. You might have heard of this one before – it was released on Steam and PSVR a few years back. Check out a trailer below.

VR Ping Pong Pro Coming To Quest

Yup, this is pretty much what you’d expect. Ping Pong Pro comes with eight different environments, five difficulty levels for AI opponents in single-player mode and multiplayer options for taking on friends, too. You can fight to the top in a Tournament mode and, outside of traditional matches, there are minigames.

Of course, there are already a handful of great table tennis games on Quest, including the excellent Eleven: Table Tennis, which still ranks in our list of the best Quest games. Ping Pong Pro will have its work cut out for it if it hopes to dethrone that game.

VR Ping Pong Pro Serves a November Release Date for PC VR & PlayStation VR

Back in 2016, indie developer Reddoll and publisher Merge Games released a voxel-style, virtual reality (VR) table tennis simulator called VR Ping Pong for HTC Vive and PlayStation VR. Reasonably successful, the teams announced work on a sequel, VR Ping Pong Pro, earlier this summer heavily updating the graphics in the process. Now the title is almost ready to be rolled out, with a November date now set.

VR Ping Pong Pro

Offering both single-player and online multiplayer modes, VR Ping Pong Pro aims to offer a far more professional looking experience than previously, with eight photo-realistic backdrops ranging from arcades and stadiums to Japanese gardens. Reddoll is certainly building upon the original, providing ping pong fans with a VR title that’s much more akin to a simulator.

Gameplay features will include the ability to go from novice to pro across five difficulty levels, accurate physics with full-spin mechanics, customisable rackets and ping pong balls and a bunch of mini-games for those times in between matches. As for the main competitive matches you can play locally against the AI while online there are single or tournament matches.

VR Ping Pong Pro

VR Ping Pong Pro is scheduled to release on 12th November 2019 for PlayStation VR and PC VR headsets like HTC Vive via Steam, priced at £19.99 GBP / $24.99 USD / €24.99 EUR.

There isn’t a lot of competition in the VR table tennis market at the moment with VR Ping Pong Pro’s main rival being Racket Fury: Table Tennis VR by 10Ants Hill. With a little more sci-fi flavour thanks to robotic avatars, Racket Fury: Table Tennis VR is available for a wide variety of headsets including Oculus Quest. VRFocus reviewed the PlayStation VR version.

‘VR Ping Pong’ Sequel to Launch in September, Trailer Here

VR Ping Pong Pro is the upcoming sequel to the 2016 ping pong simulator VR Ping Pong. However now the studio is bringing their 1v1 ping pong game to PSVR as well in addition to HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

VR Ping Pong Pro is headed to all supported platforms sometime in September. There’s currently both a Steam page and a listing on Viveport, although pricing has yet to be revealed.

The game is said to feature nine new levels including an arcade, a stadium and a Japanese garden, this time with a clear focus on photorealism over the studio’s previous title.

VR Ping Pong Pro also features racket/ball customization so you can style your kit as you play against five difficulty levels.

Reddoll Games is including player statistics, online rankings and online multiplayer, although the studio hasn’t mentioned whether the latter will be cross platform.

The game features:

  • Singles Match – (Player vs CPU or Player 1 vs Player 2)
  • Online multiplayer – choose to play either single matches or tournaments with people from all over the world
  • Tournament Mode – pyramid-style tournaments are ranked by difficulty
  • Mini games where you can hone your skills or just have fun!
  • A variety of photo-realistic environments, placing you right at the centre of the action
  • True to life physics, (with full-spin mechanics), make it feel like you’re really there!
  • Customizable Rackets – racket changes serve a practical purpose as well as a visual one, and can alter your serve for example

VR Ping Pong Pro Is A Sequel To… VR Ping Pong Coming Soon

VR Ping Pong Pro

There’s a new contender in the highly-contested VR table tennis arena. VR Ping Pong Pro arrives this September.

Those of you well-versed in this popular sub-genre might recognize that name. This is indeed a sequel to VR Ping Pong from Merge Games and Reddoll. That game first launched on PC headsets in 2016 and came to PSVR in 2017. It was a serviceable (pun intended) table tennis sim, but the lack of multiplayer on PSVR really killed it.

For the sequel, Merge and Reddoll are promising online multiplayer. There are also eight new levels with themes including a Japanese garden and a stadium. The developers say these will have ‘photorealistic’ backgrounds and, judging from the trailer above, they’re not far off. It definitely looks like a big step up from the original game’s simplistic presentation.

Also featured in this sequel is a Tournament Mode with five difficulty levels to master. You can also challenge yourself in minigames and customize your rackets.

We gave the original game 6/10 in our review. “VR Ping Pong is a likable take on the popular sport that’s held back by its lack of multiplayer,” we said. “There’s only so much fun you can have with the AI matches and minigames and, once you’ve had it, there’s little reason to stick around.”

VR Ping Pong Pro will touch down on PSVR, Rift, Vive and Index in the next few months, then. There’s sadly no mention of a Quest version yet, though the standalone headset already has Racket Fury and will soon be getting Eleven: Table Tennis VR too. That’s quite a lot of table tennis as it is.
