The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR screenshot

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR

“The achievement made by The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is one by way of both hardware and design to capitalise upon this. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR’s level of immersion is simply fantastic, and while Bethesda Softworks could well have gone the route of DOOM VFR and created a shorter spin-off experience, developing a brand new The Elder Scrolls instalment specifically for VR would have taken many years and far too much in the way of resources for what is still a nascent audience. As it stands some may find the price point of the videogame a bitter pill to swallow, but for those who dreamed of a truly immersive role-playing experience, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is simply the best opportunity available today.” – Read VRFocus’ Editor Kevin Joyce’s review of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is available now for PlayStation VR for £24.99 (GBP) down from £49.99.

Smashbox Arena image 2

Smashbox Arena

“The core gameplay itself is fun, amounting to what is essentially a game of hardcore dodgeball. There are strategic elements involving dodging, blocking, rebounds and power-ups as well as careful positioning which can provide plenty of entertainment if you manage to get a full group of humans together. Which unless you have a lot of friends who all have a PlayStation VR and a copy of Smashbox Arena, you probably won’t, since the servers seem to be very sparsely populated. This is partially compensated for with the addition of AI bots, but half the time, the bots are as dumb as rocks and cause more problems than they solve.” – Read VRFocus’ Staff Writer Rebecca Hills-Duty’s review of Smashbox Arena.

Smashbox Arena is available for only £9.99 (GBP) right now on sale from £24.99 for PlayStation VR.

Boxed Editions of Radial-G and VR Karts Coming to North America

While console sales still heavily rely on physical sales as well as digital, PC owners are much more used to buying their videogames online through platforms like Steam. So when virtual reality (VR) headsets arrived that digital trend continued. The only headset to offer physical copies is PlayStation VR, and today two VR racers are available to purchase at retail locations across North America, Radial-G: Racing Revolved and VR Karts.

Radial-G is the creation of British studio Tammeka Games, arriving on Oculus Rift first then followed by HTC Vive the same year. It’s taken a little longer to come to PlayStation VR, having only just launched on the US PlayStation Store last month and the EU store in September. EU retailers got physical copies that same month and now its the turn of North America.

The title is a futuristic racer that offers both single-player and multiplayer modes, testing players’ reaction times with its twists, jumps, splits and inverted racing on tubular anti-gravity tracks. To add to the mayhem players are equipped with an assortment of weapons to get that edge over opponents. Radial-G: Racing Revolved will retail for $39.99.

In an email to VRFocus, Tameka Games’ Sam Watts shared his excitement about the launch: “Many things are unpredictable in games development and the age old statement ‘Coming Soon(TM)’ is always undefined but this final piece of the anti-gravity racing puzzle finally comes together with the US and Canadian territories release of the game in a boxed form. Having been available for a number of weeks on the PlayStation Store digitally, it’s great to see high street retail store PS VR sections expanding with more titles available. As a little indie dev team punching above their weight since the re-inception of VR in 2013, getting a physical product on shelves is a big, costly task and we’re grateful to be working with Perpetual to enable us to do so. Once again, much respect to Shuhei Yoshida for turning our virtual dream into physical reality!”

PlayStation VR owners after a racer that’s a bit more down to earth then there’s VR Karts. Another VR title that originally debuted in 2016, VR Karts is the work of Viewpoint Games. A family-friendly kart racing videogame, players can customise their karts, race through deserts, jungles, castles and more, in the light of day or at night, and against up to six players online. VR Karts will retail for $29.99.

Both these launches are the work of Perp Games, the publishing arm of Perpetual Europe. “Game developers are just getting started with unlocking the true potential in virtual reality gaming,” said Mickey Torode, director of publishing at Perpetual. “We are looking forward to continue working with these amazing developers on bringing titles like these and many others to players pining for deeper, more complex VR content to experience.”

Competition: Rev Up Your Engines For Some Kart Racing Action With VR Karts On PSVR

When it comes to kart games it’s very difficult to go long without mentioning Mario Kart. (You see what I mean?) But whilst Nintendo’s racing franchise might be the standard bearer it’s going to be some time before you get a chance to get racing for the Mushroom Cup in virtual reality (VR). Unless you want to take a trip to Japan that is. – and that’s rather expensive. Fortunately Mario Kart is not the only kart racer on the block and there are several that have already come to VR that are pretty good too.

One of the most well known and most popular is VR Karts by independant developer Viewpoint Games. In VR Karts players can hop in the driver’s seat of their own customised kart and race against each other through a number of environments as they collect power ups and use weapons to gain the upper hand over other racers. The fun and family-friendly racing game is designed specifically for VR, making it a smooth driving experience. Following a launch on Early Access back in 2015, the game has come to Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and also the Samsung Gear VR via way of mobile conversion VR Karts Sprint. The racer has also made its way to PlayStation VR – although only in Europe at this time.

We’ve teamed up with Viewpoint Games to offer you the chance to win one of five codes for the game on PlayStation VR.

You have just under a week in order to enter as you’ve until Friday, 14th July 2017. The competition is open to everyone, though please note you’ll need to have an EU PlayStation account in order to claim the code – and a PlayStation VR in order to enjoy it.To enter all you have to do to is use the app below and be either a follower of VRFocus on Twitter, be a subscriber to our YouTube channel or visit our Facebook or Google+ pages. That’s it. You get an entry for any of those so make sure you check everything out.

Win VR Karts On PlayStation VR (EU Only)

We’ll let winners know as soon as possible after the competition ends. Good luck!

UK Retailer GAME Gets VR Karts Exclusive

The studios behind kart racing title VR Karts have announced a deal where the physical boxed copies of VR Karts for PlayStation VR will be available in the UK exclusively at UK tech and videogame retailer GAME.

Featuring gameplay strongly inspired by Mario Kart and other fast-paces kart racing titles, VR Karts is a racing game deigned to be played exclusively in virtual reality (VR). Having previously seen a less ambitious version for Samsung Gear VR, then a larger-scale version on HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, VR Karts is launching on to PlayStation VR with digital and physical versions available to buy.

The PlayStation VR version has some additional improved features, such as improved weapon handling, better scaling of the world to reduce VR sickness problems and a tweaked collision system for when vehicles spin-off track, to make it easier for players to re-join the action. The PlayStation VR release has also included a control mode to allow the Dual Shock controller to act as a steering wheel, and there are customisation packs available via DLC.

VR Karts HTC Vive screenshot

“We are very excited to be putting our trust into GAME. As the leading specialist in the industry, we believe they have a unique position to be able reach and talk to our PSVR audience.” said Rob Edwards, MD and Founder of Perp, one of the developers behind the title.

You can find out what the VRFocus team thought of the Oculus Rift version of VR Karts here.

VR Karts for the PlayStation VR is available as a physical copy through the GAME website, or as a digital download via the PlayStation Store. The digital edition costs £29.99 (GBP) while the price of the physical version has not been confirmed. Boxed copies of VR Karts will be available from the 30th June, 2017.

VRFocus will bring you news of other VR products as it becomes available.
