ByteDance Expanding Pico Interactive’s VR Plans Into the US

May saw Pico Interactive finally take its first steps out of the consumer market in Asia with a limited release of the Neo3 Link headset in Europe. Up until this point, Pico had only focused on enterprise customers globally. Now the company is looking towards the US market as job listings on ByteDance’s website show a range of positions available across the West Coast.

First spotted by Protocol, there are more than 40 vacancies ByteDance is looking to fill for Pico Interactive’s expansion. With the website saying ByteDance has: ““tons of money” for VR games and experiences”, the listings mainly focus on the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle and San Diego.

Looking to fund lots of new content through Pico Studios, positions available include Head of Pico Studios, Head of VR Game Strategy, Head of Consumer Sales, Head of Overseas Content Ecosystem and an Operation Manager. There are also plenty of engineering roles across systems, optics, and other disciplines.

While nothing official has been announced regarding a consumer launch in the US, Pico Interactive is certainly looking to increase its presence there to compete with Meta. The Pico Neo3 Link is seen as one of the very few competitors to the Meta Quest 2, sporting a very similar specification list and videogame library. Titles such as SUPERHOT VR, Puzzling Places, After the Fall, Walkabout Mini Golf, Elven Table Tennis, and Demeo are all natively supported by the device which is also compatible with StereamVR.

Pico Neo3 Link

Nothing is likely to happen in the US until Pico has completed its European role out. Pico has continually said that the European release of Neo3 Link is a “beta Launch”, where only one headset can be purchased per customer. The headset is available in Germany (where the Quest 2 isn’t available), France, Spain, The Netherlands and now the UK for £399 GBP.

Whether ByteDance and Pico can compete with Meta is another question entirely, with the latest IDC figures putting Meta Quest 2 sales at nearly 15 million. Attracting more developers, as well as funding original content, might help Pico but the Neo3 Link’s biggest draw could be not having to connect it to a social network.

As Pico Interactive reveal further details, gmw3 will keep you informed.

Ubisoft Now Hiring For VR Project In India

Ubisoft looks like it is expanding its VR efforts even further beyond our initial reports.

In early September we reported the discovery of several new listings at one of Ubisoft’s three Blue Byte offices in Dusseldorf, Germany. At the time, the company told us it was hiring both for its location-based VR experiences and “a new AAA VR project”. The Ubisoft Reflections team in Newcastle, UK, is also hiring for a VR-focused Lead Character Artist role.

A New Challenger Approaches

This month, though, we’ve discovered yet more listings for a VR project, this time in Pune, India. There the company is looking for Development Tester, Unity Developer, VFX Artist, Art Director, Level Designer and Character Artist roles.

The listings themselves don’t reveal much. The Unity Developer role does, however, state that the successful applicant “will be working closely with Lead/Technical Manager/Producer to develop and provide solutions on VR devices in the process of creating games by maintaining high coding standards.”

Initially, we’d have assumed this team would be assisting in the creation of the VR game in development at Blue Byte. The existence of Art Director and Level Designer roles, however, has us wondering if it could be separate. In a listing for a Game Director for the VR project at Blue Byte, Ubisoft states the game will be “developed across multiple studios,” though.

Reports from earlier this year suggested Facebook signed a deal with Ubisoft for two VR games. One would be a new entry in the Splinter Cell series, another in the Assassin’s Creed franchise. The rate at which the company is now hiring for VR projects lends some weight to those reports.

But questions remain. Is Ubisoft developing one game at a time? Or does the use of multiple studios suggest the company is developing them simultaneously? We likely won’t know for some time yet.

Flurry of New Apple ‘AR/VR’ Job Listings Point to New Products on the Horizon

A flurry of new job listings for Apple’s secretive ‘Technology Development Group’ suggests that the company has reached a new phase of turning its years of AR/VR R&D into actual upcoming products. Two of the most intriguing among the new job listings are the roles of ‘AR/VR Demo Evangelist’ and ‘Product Manager, AR/VR’.

It’s no secret that Apple has been doing lots of R&D in the AR and VR space for years now. The company was seeking candidates with relevant experience at least as far back as 2014, and has been actively building up AR functionality in its iOS products. However, Apple only barely dipped its toe into VR, but in recent years has become publicly silent on the subject.

Something interesting about the company’s latest hiring activity is that it’s now specifically looking for roles headlined with ‘AR/VR’, where previous listings generally only mentioned AR up front. It’s difficult to say if the change marks a meaningful difference in what the company is working toward, or the progress therein, but some of the listings themselves offer significant clues.

With most activity coming in just the last week, the company listed at least 11 new jobs for ‘AR/VR’ headlined roles specifically (while heaps more indicate a requirement or preference for AR and VR experience deeper in the job listing):

AR/VR Graphics Engineer May 3, 2019
AR/VR System UI Engineer Jun 17, 2019
AR/VR Software Engineer Jun 19, 2019
AR/VR Realtime 3D Software Engineer Jul 2, 2019
AR/VR System Frameworks Engineer Jul 23, 2019
Senior Embedded AR/VR Quality Engineer Jul 24, 2019
AR/VR Software Tools Developer Jul 24, 2019
AR/VR Demo Evangelist Jul 24, 2019
Embedded AR/VR Quality Engineer Jul 24, 2019
AR/VR System Software Engineer Jul 24, 2019
Product Manager, AR/VR Aug 1, 2019

One of the most notable roles is the ‘AR/VR Demo Evangelist‘, which is tasked with literally giving internal AR/VR demos at the company, as well as engaging in user research and generally introducing and inspiring the broader Apple team (including executives) with exciting tech demos.

The AR/VR Demo Evangelist will execute project demos, user research investigations, and cross functional lab efforts.

In this role, you will be responsible for facilitating state of the art demos to a large range of audiences. You will partner with applications and product design teams to drive various internal user research studies, while supporting multi- functional lab and competitive analysis efforts. Working with highly specialized engineers and PM’s.

This most likely means one of two things: 1) Apple’s AR/VR R&D has moved into the productization stage, so the company now needs someone internally to start showing the rest of the company what the new tech can do and how to start thinking about it & building for it. Or 2), Apple just wants someone who can take off the shelf AR/VR hardware and content and start showing it around the company to generally familiarize the broader Apple team with the potential of AR/VR. It’s difficult to say, but another job listing makes #1 seem most likely.

The ‘Product Manager, AR/VR‘ listing is significant because the Product Manager role typically describes someone which oversees the processes of turning R&D into an actual product offering. A Product Manager, for instance, might decide what features and specs are or aren’t important for the product, what the product should look like, what kind of customer it’s for, and create a roadmap for actually getting the product to market.

Indeed, Apple’s listing says it’s looking for a candidate with “a track record for shipping complex new technology, ideally in the AR/VR space” who will be tasked with “creat[ing] and lead[ing] the product roadmap for the subject portfolio,” with these qualifications, among others:

  • 5+ years experience in Product Management of consumer facing digital products, or, 3+ years Product Management experience in AR/VR technology with consumer facing experiences.
  • A deep understanding of the Apple ecosystem and the AR/VR market, technologies and applications.

Of course this calls into question recent rumors that Apple suspended work on its consumer AR headset. If those rumors are actually true, it’s quite possible that (with all of the R&D Apple has been doing in this space) that the ‘cancellation’ was actually Apple eliminating one or more internal ventures in favor of bringing another to market. Other reports indicate that Apple may be targeting its first headset product for 2020.

Indeed Report Finds VR/AR Job Postings Increase by 1314%

Every Sunday VRFocus publishes The VR Job Hub, a weekly listing of the best vacancies in the virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) industries. Recently, one of the biggest job sites in the world, Indeed, released a report on the gaming industry, revealing a growing surge in VR/AR jobs and searches for them.

Indeed VR/AR Metro Area

As the industry has grown so naturally so has the need to find suitable candidates. Since 2014 Indeed has found that the share of job postings per million for AR and VR roles has increased by 1314.44%, while job searches have increased by 951.89% in the same timeframe. Most recently over the last year (Feb 18 – Feb 19), the site reports that the share of job postings per million roles has increased by 21.86%, but job searches have by comparison decreased by 13.48%.

For those interested in a job role within the industry, a good place to be based isn’t the west coast, instead, it’s North Carolina, with the state home to the most vacancies in the US at 9.5%, located in Charlotte and Raleigh (where Epic Games is based).

One of the more interesting stats to come out of the report relates to searches involving internships. While not every company offers such positions, there are plenty of people out there looking for those that do with searches for AR/VR internships up 1,220% in the last five years.

The report states that: “2019 will be an interesting year for the gaming industry. Esports and AR/VR remain prime areas to watch, with plentiful opportunities on the horizon. What’s more, we see an increasing number of opportunities available in parts of the country that previously had few, meaning job seekers no longer need to move to coastal tech hubs to pursue their dreams.”

While this is certainly good news for those seeking a way into the VR/AR industry, the report is only for the US, meaning its just the tip of the iceberg. Europe is another major player in the VR ecosystem, take a look at the VR Fund’s industry landscape to see a wealth of companies focused on these technologies from both sides of the pond. And don’t forget to check out the latest VR Job Hub every Sunday as VRFocus publishes the latest positions.

Google Appears to Be Ramping Up R&D Efforts for “New and novel” AR/VR Lenses

Though there wasn’t much groundbreaking in the Daydream news shared at Google I/O this year, the company is growing its AR/VR team at an accelerated rate, suggesting Google has a number of things up its sleeve yet. One recent job listing which caught our eye suggests that the company is ramping up its R&D efforts for lenses, now hiring a ‘Diamond Turning Technician’ to assist with rapid prototyping of “new and novel” optics for AR and VR devices.

Among flurry of job listings for Google’s Daydream AR/VR team seen so far this year was something that we haven’t spotted previously: the company is seeking a Diamond Turning Technician experienced in operating “state of the art” lathe equipment used for precision optics prototyping. While we’ve known for some time that Google has been designing custom lenses for their Daydream products, the new job listing suggests and escalation of that work into in-house rapid prototyping.

The job listing, which was posted in the last week, notes an internal “dynamic Research & Development (R&D) laboratory with a focus on new and novel [optical] designs and a close partnership with world-class Optical and Mechanical Designers.” The opening is at Google’s Mountain View headquarters.

Though externally Daydream developments have been slower in recent months, an analysis by Road to VR of the company’s job posting trends shows that hiring for Google’s AR/VR team is accelerating.

Data collected by Road to VR

In the last 10 months the company has listed 59 new job openings directly associated with its AR/VR activities, up 37% over the 10 months prior.

Google’s increasing hiring in the AR and VR space mirrors other major tech companies like Oculus who toward the end of 2017 and into 2018 began an AR/VR hiring spree that would nearly triple the number of the company’s usual job listings. And of course Apple has been not only hiring, but also making strategic acquisitions in the space, most recently picking up its very own holographic optics company.

Oculus Hiring Spree Suggests Facebook is Accelerating VR/AR Plans

Starting toward the end of 2017, the number of listed job openings at Oculus has nearly tripled, with the current number of openings floating around an all time high.

Across Oculus’ 15 locations, the company is currently listing 443 available openings, spanning 20 categories from Research to Software Engineering to Computer Vision, and more. The number of openings has spiked significantly since November, data collected from the last 20 months by Road to VR shows.

Data collected by Road to VR

The spike comes at the end of 2017 and into the New Year. While that might coincide with annual budget planning, job openings at the company during the 2016 to 2017 transition didn’t show anything comparable to what’s been seen from Oculus’ hiring since November 2017.

A spokesperson for Oculus tells Road to VR, “Overall, the growing number of job openings across AR and VR are an indication of the level of commitment that Facebook/Oculus is making in the VR space.”

Corresponding with the company’s hiring spree, a promotional recruiting video was released last week extolling the benefits of working in the Oculus Research department, which currently has a record high 80 job openings:

Back in 2014, shortly after Facebook’s acquisition of Oculus and the formation of Oculus Research, the company’s chief scientist, Michael Abrash, called it the “first complete, well funded VR research team in close to 20 years.” In early 2017, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg publicly toured the Oculus Research facility and shared an inside look.

Earlier this month Facebook announced that it was a founding partner of the University of Washington’s Reality Lab. Based in Seattle, home of Oculus Research, the $6 million venture “creates one of the world’s first academic centers dedicated to virtual and augmented reality,” Facebook says.

New York City Mayor Wants To Be The “Global Hub” For VR/AR With Newly Funded Lab

New York City Mayor Wants To Be The “Global Hub” For VR/AR With Newly Funded Lab

Coinciding with the growth of the augmented and virtual reality industries, there are tons of new job opportunities. New companies spawned by the tech will be welcoming new employees and established companies will be welcoming new faces as they tackle the new opportunities VR and AR afford their businesses.

In New York, the current Mayor has laid out a plan to create 10,000 jobs for middle-class citizens. As reported by bklyner, part of that plan includes a newly announced VR/AR lab that will be opening at the Brooklyn Navy Yard this year.

The project received $6 million in funding from both the New York City Economic Development Corporation and the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, with Mayor Bill de Blasio sharing a few words in the press release for the development. “Augmented and Virtual Reality represents a huge new industry, and we want New York City to be second to none,” he says. “We’re investing in the space, the talent, and the research needed to make New York the global hub for this emerging technology.”

The lab will be a partnership with CUNY Lehman College’s VR/AR Training Academy and Development Lab, preparing New Yorkers for inevitable jobs in the immersive fields. Taking such an initiative could position New York well as more industries that benefit from virtual and augmented reality sprout up.

The lab is part of the Mayor’s plan to create middle-class jobs in technology, life sciences, creative, and manufacturing industries over the next 10 years. The VR/AR lab, which will occupy a 15,000-square-feet at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, will generate roughly 500 jobs over that 10-year span after the targeted opening at the end of 2017.

“Equal opportunity and access, through education and job training, is the bedrock of our jobs strategy, and together we will continue to rise,” the Mayor added.
