Baobab Studios Nabs 9th Emmy Award Thanks To Baba Yaga

Baba Yaga won an Emmy for Outstanding Interactive Media for a Daytime Program at the 48th Annual Emmy Awards, bringing Baobab Studios’ total Emmy awards wins to nine.

Baba Yaga also previously won two other Emmy awards — Outstanding Directing Team for Animated Program (Eric Darnell, director, and Mathias Chelebourg, co-director) and Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation for Character Design (Karl Athannossov).

It was already such an honor and thrill for Baba Yaga to be awarded Emmys for both character design and direction,” said Baba Yaga director and writer Eric Darnell. “And now, to be honored with the award for best interactive is truly spectacular and a reflection of the team’s monumental efforts to give the audience the opportunity to be the hero of their own story.”

The immersive VR movie released in January exclusively for Oculus Quest after premiering at various film festivals in 2020, including the Venice Film Festival almost exactly a year ago. In our review at the time, we found it to be entertaining but slightly safe. It certainly wasn’t the ambitious step-up we were hoping to see from Baobab’s next offering:

This is a likable, sweet but ultimately safe adventure, highlighted by some great VR novelties but also equally limited by them. I want to see something from this studio that feels truly dynamic — like my presence has genuine impact in the stories it creates. Baobab remains one of VR’s most promising storytellers but, four years on from its debut, I feel like I’m still waiting for it to really hit its stride.

Baba Yaga is available now on Oculus Quest for $5.99.

Tribeca Film Fest VR Short ‘Madrid Noir’ Coming to Oculus Quest Summer 2021

Madrid Noir

There are some wonderful virtual reality (VR) animations available, providing short interactive experiences for all ages. With the Tribeca Film Festival returning in June, one project set to premiere is interactive VR mystery Madrid Noir, with creators No Ghost and Atlas V publically launching the short during the summer for Oculus Quest owners.

Madrid Noir

The 45-minute animated caper takes place across two acts, where a young woman called Lola returns to Madrid in the 1930s, to the apartment of her estranged uncle who was recently declared dead. Presented in a theatre production style, Madrid Noir sees her unexpectedly thrown back into the past to relive a summer she spent with him as a child, ultimately leading her to uncover a long-buried secret.

Madrid Noir is a VR spinoff of a 2018 title created by the same director, James Castillo. “I went into Madrid Noir with the idea to create a film that wasn’t just for kids or VR fans, and engaging enough for grown-ups,” Castillo told Variety. “Very often, VR content works as exhibitions or as realistic documentaries, or even games, and while these are all great, I was more interested in making a narrative-driven film that belongs to the VR space, but is accessible and taps into different aspects, since I’m a fan of storytelling.”

Like other VR shorts of this type, Madrid Noir’s immersive elements will be narrative-led. So rather than having gameplay moments like puzzles to solve, you’ll simply get light interactions that’ll involve you in, and move the story along at a set pace.

Madrid Noir

Being in the hands of Atlas V, Madrid Noir will be joining an illustrious group of VR films. The French company has helped create the Rosario Dawson narrated Battlescar, the Colin Farrell narrated Gloomy Eyes, and the cosmic Spheres.

Created using Unreal Engine, Madrid Noir will be released for the Oculus Quest platform in summer 2021. For further updates on the VR animation as well as the other immersive experiences coming to Tribeca, keep reading VRFocus.

Baobab Studios’ Baba Yaga Releases January 14, Exclusively For Oculus Quest

Baobab Studios announced that its next animated VR film Baba Yaga will release on January 14 exclusively for Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2.

The VR film is about two sisters who journey into a haunted forest to seek a cure for their sickly mother, where they will have to confront the mysterious witch, Baba Yaga. The film is a first-person experience, where you embody one of the two sisters and participate in some minor interactive moments. A new trailer was released ahead of launch, which you can watch below:

Baba Yaga has a star-studded cast with Daisy Ridley playing your sister, Magda, with Glenn Close as the mother, Jennifer Hudson as the forest and Kate Winslet as Baba Yaga herself. The film premiered at several film festivals last year and Jamie Feltham and I both got a chance to watch the film ahead of release. We came to the same conclusion — it’s a charming, if safe, experience from the Baobab team that left us craving just a little bit more. Here are the closing remarks from Jamie’s review:

I want to see something from this studio that feels truly dynamic — like my presence has genuine impact in the stories it creates. Baobab remains one of VR’s most promising storytellers but, four years on from its debut, I feel like I’m still waiting for it to really hit its stride.

Baba Yaga runs for approximately half an hour and will be available on the Oculus Store for Quest and Quest 2 from January 14 for $5.99.

Dragon Ball Movies And 30+ Paramount Titles Coming To Bigscreen

The Bigscreen team has shared some updates on new content and features coming to the platform in the next month, including the addition of three Dragon Ball movies.

On Sunday, September 12, the three latest Dragon Ball anime movies will premiere in Bigscreen:

  • Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods — 10am PT
  • Dragon Ball Z: Ressurection ‘F’f — 3pm PT
  • Dragon Ball Super: Broly — 7pm PT

In addition to the premiere screenings, the movies will be available to rent on-demand from Bigscreen’s movie rental catalog. The Dragon Ball films will be available for users in the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand for $3.99 each.

There’s also a tie-in Dragon Ball contest with some tickets to the Dragon Ball screenings up for grabs. To win, users simply need to find all seven Dragon Balls in the mini game posted to the Bigscreen Twitter and Facebook pages at 8am PT on September 2. The first to complete the game and the person to complete it the fastest (on their first attempt only) will win a free ticket to the screening.

However the Dragon Ball movies aren’t the only titles being added to the rental catalog — Bigscreen is expanding its partnership with Paramount Pictures and adding over 30 new movies available as on-demand rentals. This includes the legendary Godfather trilogy and the Mission Impossible series, as well as Jackass 3D, which will be the first 3D movie to premiere in the United Kingdom.

The team will also launch an accessibility update, adding English Closed Captions for the deaf and hard of hearing community. Bigscreen is also currently developing support for hand tracking on the Oculus Quest, which the team hopes will allow users to communicate in ASL (American Sign Language) while using Bigscreen.

Just last week, Bigscreen added DLNA support, allowing users to remotely stream video and audio content from their media server into the app.

Kate Winslet, Jennifer Hudson, Glenn Close Join All-Female Cast Of Baobab Studios’ Baba Yaga

Baobab Studios announced some massive additions to a now star-studded, all-female cast for their next VR project, Baba Yaga.

Kate Winslet, Jennifer Hudson, and Glenn Close will join Daisy Ridley in the upcoming immersive VR movie set to premiere next month at the 2020 Venice International Film Festival. Hudson is also an executive producer on the film.

These three new additions make Baba Yaga one of Baobab’s most high-profile projects yet. Other Hollywood celebrities have appeared in the studio’s work in the past, such as Ali Wong in Bonfire, but to see four major actresses all appear in an immersive VR film together is pretty unprecedented, especially with Hudson in the producer role as well.

Daisy Ridley will play the viewer’s sister, Magda. When their mother, the Chief (played by Close) falls deathly ill, the two of them will have to work together and enter the forbidden forest (played by Hudson) to seek a cure from Baba Yaga (played by Winslet).

“Baba Yaga is a beautiful work of animation and I was honored to be an executive producer alongside my talented collaborators at Baobab Studios,” said Hudson in a prepared statement. “While the story is rooted in classic folklore, we were inspired to bring it into modern light by focusing on environmental themes and strong female characters, themes the world needs to explore now more than ever. It was my pleasure to be part of the strong female cast alongside Daisy, Kate, and Glenn.”

The immersive VR animation was created during the pandemic, a feat which the film’s director and Baobab co-founder Eric Darnell called “especially challenging”. While the film is set to debut at the Venice Film Festival in a matter of weeks, it will also be available exclusively on Oculus Quest later this year.

Bigscreen Video Player Adds DLNA Support For Wireless Streaming

A new update for Bigscreen is available now, adding wireless video and audio playback through DLNA protocol support. Plus, an unreleased blockbuster movie is set to make a simultaneous debut across Bigscreen, physical cinemas and digital platforms.

Back in June, the addition of a video player to Bigscreen was a welcome addition for many users, especially on Quest. It allowed users to play video files natively in the app without streaming their entire desktop view. However, this feature only supported playing files stored on your device, but this new update adds DLNA protocol support, allowing for wireless streaming.

Users with a DLNA media server (or those using one with optional DLNA support, such as Plex) should now be able to access all their files in Bigscreen when connected to the same network as the server. This is of particular interest to Quest users, as it means they won’t have to transfer potentially large video files onto the Quest’s limited storage in order to watch them in Bigscreen.

Additionally, Bigscreen announced that a new movie studio with “thousands of 2D and 3D movies” will be partnering with Bigscreen soon. Even more exciting news is that an unreleased blockbuster movie will be available (presumably for a paid fee) in Bigscreen on the same day it becomes available in theaters and on other digital platforms. With many cinemas around the world closed, it’s nice to see Bigscreen acknowledged as a viable release platform alongside traditional VOD and physical options.

Bigscreen will also roll out a friends system in the coming months, as well as remote desktop support (coming out of beta) for ultra low-latency PC to Quest streaming. There’s also new environments, avatars and a paid membership plan on the way.

The Bigscreen’s DLNA update is available now.

Gloomy Eyes Nominated For Emmy Award For Outstanding Original Interactive Program

Immersive VR story Gloomy Eyes has been nominated for an Emmy award in the Outstanding Original Interactive Program category.

The experience released a few months ago for PC VR and more recently for the Oculus Quest, with a story that runs for around 30 minutes, split across 3 episodes. There’s been a fair amount of buzz around Gloomy Eyes, both before and after release. It’s narrated by Colin Farrell and was featured at festivals like Sundance and South by Southwest in 2019. It even won multiple awards at the 2019 Raindance Immersive festival.

Now Gloomy Eyes is set to keep its successful run going even longer, with a new Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Original Interactive Program category. The nomination was confirmed the team behind Gloomy, Atlas V, but we can’t find any details on this year’s other nominees in the category just yet.

The category isn’t specifically exclusive to VR or AR experiences either — last year, the same award went to NASA InSight’s Mars Landing, however VR experience Traveling While Black by Felix & Paul Studios was also nominated. There are other categories that have featured VR projects in the past as well, such as the Outstanding Innovation in Interactive Media and the Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media categories.

The Emmys are set to take place this September, but we’re not sure whether these immersive and interactive media categories will be announced on the same day as the main show or at an earlier date.

Gloomy Eyes is available for Oculus Quest and PC VR now. You can read our review here.

Bigscreen Update Adds Videoplayer For Native Video File Playback

A new Bigscreen update launching today adds the capability to play local video files stored on a device in Bigscreen, even when offline. The feature also supports synchronized multi-user online viewing sessions, provided each user has the same video file stored on their own device.

Bigscreen has always been one of the leading applications for watching movies and videos in VR, with various environments and online multi-user capability. Bigscreen currently allows users to stream and view their entire Windows desktop in VR, including any videos or applications running on the computer. The app also offers ticketed official movie broadcasts in their virtual cinemas, which is run in participation with major movie studios.

However, this new videoplayer feature is slightly different and designed with mobile headsets like the Oculus Quest in mind. It allows users to pull up any video file, stored locally on the headset itself, to watch in Bigscreeen. Even if the user is offline, Bigscreen can be used to watch local video files, transferred onto the Quest from a computer, in any of the various environments on offer. The feature supports many video file formats and codecs, even including 3D video files.

There’s also online capabilities, allowing you and your friend to start an online session and watch a synchronized version of the same video, just like you would in any other Bigscreen experience. However, to do so, each participating user will need to have the same video file stored locally on their own device — the videoplayer doesn’t support streaming or sharing the file.

You’ll also be able to use the videoplayer feature in conjunction with other Bigscreen features, like desktop screensharing. So, on PC VR, you can now have a local video file playing in an environment while also using the desktop screenshare feature at the same time for other things.

The Bigscreen Videoplayer update is free and launches today.

Flipside Studio Provides Virtual Production Tools For Animation In VR

Flipside Studio is a new virtual production studio tool that allows actors and directors to capture and create animated content entirely in VR. The tool is leaving Early Access today, after a testing period where several notable companies and platforms made use of the technology.

The software allows users to embody avatars and models within VR and set up virtual cameras to film content from within the virtual studio. This allows actors to act out and perform scenes using motion capture, which is then recorded using virtual cameras and can be edited into a video or broadcast as live animation content.

The tool has been used by some companies while in Early Access, with content made in Flipside Studio now available on some streaming platforms like Amazon Prime, YouTube, Twitch and Caffeine. For example, Flipside Studio was used to prototype Detective Fips, a German kids show on the Toggo platform, which is jointly owned by Walt Disney Direct. Likewise, Caffeine — a live streaming competitor to Twitch with investment from Fox — also used Flipside Studios to film a live animated show with chat interaction, all created from home during the COVID-19 lockdown. It has also been used for music videos by DEL Records and for interstitial content in the Amazon Prime series Spooky Movie Time.

Flipside Studio will support custom building 3D set environments to use while recording in VR.

All in all, Flipside Studio looks look a robust tool and has a large number of features to suit different sorts of production. There’s an auto-scroll teleprompter, implementable body physics for realistic interactions, OBS and Twitch integration, custom sets (which can be built out of VR, as pictured above), live drawing capability, and collaboration support for multi-user sessions.

With the disappearance of Mindshow from Steam, Flipside Studio looks like a strong contender for similar sorts of made-in-VR videos. It will be free for non-commercial use, with a $25/month price tier for indie studios, a $200/month for companies with revenue over $200,000, and negotiable enterprise pricing options.

It is available for PC VR on Steam. A standalone version for Oculus Quest is planned for the the future, with an alpha build coming soon.

Daisy Ridley Cast In Baobab Studios’ Next VR Movie, Baba Yaga

Baobab Studios revealed that Daisy Ridley has been cast in the lead role for their upcoming VR project, Baba Yaga.

First revealed earlier this month, Baba Yaga is the next immersive VR movie from talented VR group Baobab Studios, the developers of Bonfire, Asteroids! and many other VR movie projects. In a ‘Work In Progress’ presentation at the Annecy International Animal Festival Online, the studio revealed that Daisy Ridley has been cast in the lead role of Magda. Ridley is best known for portraying Rey in the most recent trilogy of Star Wars films, the first of which was her breakthrough role.

We also got some meatier story details from Baobab, revealing a bit more about what to expect from its next project:

“In Baba Yaga, viewers will be invited as a main character into a haunting fairytale world completely reimagined, and their choices will determine the ending of this story of love, fortitude and magic. Sometimes a force for evil, sometimes a force for good, the enigmatic witch Baba Yaga uses her powers to stop the villagers whose settlement encroaches upon her enchanted forest. When the viewer’s mother, the village chief, falls deathly ill, it is up to them and their sister Magda to do the unthinkable—enter the forest, uncover its hidden mysteries and get the cure from Baba Yaga. Ultimately, every decision the viewer makes matters…even whether humanity and nature can live in balance.”

While the ‘Work In Progress’ presentation from the other day is only available to accredited Annecy festival viewers, the Baobab Studios team will also participate in a live Q&A on June 23rd at 9am PST as part of the festival, which will be available to the public.

Are you looking forward to Baba Yaga? Let us know what you think in the comments
