GDC 2019: Apex Construct, More Win Big In Third Annual Viveport Developer Awards

GDC 2019: Apex Construct, More Win Big In Third Annual Viveport Developer Awards

Fast Travel Games’ Apex Construct was one of the big winners in HTC’s third annual Viveport Developer Awards.

This year’s winners were announced at GDC 2019 today. As the name suggests, the awards recognize developers that have published apps on HTC’s VR storefront in the past year. Winners will net goodies from a $50,000 prize pool. That includes new Vive hardware, tickets to GDC itself and future marketing support. Crucially the awards don’t just focus on games but also try to recognize other areas of VR content development like education and arts.

Apex Construct took home the prize in the PC Entertainment section. Fast Travel’s 2018 adventure offered a full VR experience and is a pretty deserving winner in our book. VictoryVR’s gruesome VR Frog Dissection took home the award for PC Education while the Vive Arts-backed The Water Lily Obsession won in the PC Arts & Culture section. Finally, nDreams’ Shooty Fruity Arcade scored a win for PC Arcade titles.

There were also awards for developers on HTC’s mobile platform, Vive Wave. Resolution Games’ Bait! won Entertainment, Star Chart scored Education and Paint VR won Arts & Culture.

As HTC points out, each of these apps will be included in Viveport Infinity when it launches next month. It’s basically Netflix for VR; $12.99 a month gets you access to over 600 VR apps for unlimited use.

We’ll be looking forward to seeing how HTC’s upcoming launches change next year’s awards. The company is soon to launch its Vive Cosmos headset and a new platform named Vive Reality System alongside it.

Blind, Apex Construct & VR Regatta all Nominated for Viveport Developer Awards

Submissions for the annual Viveport Developer Awards (VDA) 2019 began back in November, looking to celebrate content on the retail platform across four PC categories and three mobile. This week has seen the PC nominees revealed ahead of the official winner announcement later this month.

Apex Construct

A total of 11 virtual reality (VR) titles have been chosen with two nominees for each PC category. While the mobile (Vive Wave) winners have already been selected.

Entertainment – PC

Education – PC

Arts & Culture – PC

Arcade – PC

Entertainment – Mobile

  • Bait! | Resolution Games

Education – Mobile

  • Star Chart | Escapist Games Ltd.

The most popular category Entertainment has two well known – yet polar opposite – VR titles from 2018, Blind and Apex Construct vying for the win. Blind is an eerie puzzle experience from Tiny Bull Studios. Players are completely blind and ‘see’ by making noise – much like echolocation – illuminating the world around them for brief moments. Securing a decent four-star rating in VRFocus’ review we said: “With the likes of Torn on the market and Twilight Path still to come, Blind can certainly hold its own with its design and gameplay mechanics. The echolocation system isn’t unique but it does provide a way for the studio to make a non-horror experience especially chilling.”

Apex Construct, on the other hand, is a far more action-oriented experience set in a futuristic world where you play the last ever human caught in a struggle between two AI’s. Rather than an assortment of weapons the title focuses on one, the bow. While a bow is generally seen as old-fashioned, the one in Apex Construct certainly isn’t featuring a deployable shield as well as a formidable selection of arrow variations. Achieving full five-stars in VRFocus’ review, we said: “Apex Construct is the standard by which future VR titles will be judged, and an indicator that VR has stepped up its game.”

The winners of the VDA’s 2019 will be announced Monday, 18th March during the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. For those announcements, keep reading VRFocus.

Submissions now Open for the Third Annual Viveport Developer Awards

After holding the second Viveport Developer Awards (VDAs) at the beginning of this year VTC Vive has now opened submissions for the third VDA contest, looking for virtual reality (VR) developers who have been, or will be, published on Viveport Subscription.

Viveport Developer Awards (VDAs)

The awards are Viveport’s way of rewarding and celebrating developers who contribute to the platform’s success, with winners in each category able to walk away with up to $50,000 USD in cash and prizes including the newest HTC Vive hardware, tickets to the 2019 Game Developers Conference and marketing support.

There will be four specific categories with one winner and one finalist from the four PC-VR categories and one winner from three VIVE Wave categories. These are outlined as follows:

  • Entertainment – PC-VR, Vive Wave
    • Captivates the player in an engaging world and story. Features interactivity that is satisfying and rewarding. Leaves a lasting impression. Encourages the player to revisit the title again and again. Games and narrative-driven experiences.
  • Education – PC-VR, Vive Wave
    • Offers immersive and interactive learning experiences for the classroom or outside of it. Sparks curiosity, imagination and passion for intriguing subject matter.
  • Arts & Culture – PC-VR, Vive Wave
    • Enables, preserves, and democratizes creation in the arts. Addresses a diverse, global audience and contributes to the knowledge and enjoyment of cultural heritage.
  •   Arcade – PC-VR
    • Delights customers new to virtual reality. Designed for location-based entertainment considering ease of learning and playtime. A great choice for venues and businesses offering virtual reality experiences. The title is required to be opted-in to the Viveport Arcade program.

HTC Vive Pro

“Developers have been the key to Viveport Subscription’s great success this year as we’ve seen our subscriber base grow 5x due to our ever-increasing library of top-quality content,” said Rahul Sandil, Corporate Vice President, Marketing for Viveport and VIVE Studios in a statement. “The Viveport Developer Awards are just another way Viveport puts developers first. With the most avenues to monetize their content, full marketing support, 100% revenue share during the busiest quarter of the year and double the reach with the support of Oculus Rift, Viveport continues to be the best platform for VR developers.”

From today until 1st February 2019 VR developers can submit their PC or Wave title to the Viveport Developer Awards. They’ll need to register on the Viveport Developer Console, then opt-in for the Viveport Subscription program and choose which category to enter before submitting their title to Viveport for publishing.

All the winners will be revealed during the 2019 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. For those announcements, keep reading VRFocus.

The Gallery Episode 2, Gravity Sketch, More Win $50,000 At Viveport Developer Awards

The Gallery Episode 2, Gravity Sketch, More Win $50,000 At Viveport Developer Awards

HTC’s Viveport Developer Awards rounded out for the second time last week at GDC, with some of VR’s best experiences winning a heap of cash.

First place winners in each of the award’s five categories were given $50,000, while second place in each was awarded $20,000. To be in with a shot of winning, all developers had to have done was release their VR experience on Viveport in the past 12 months.

It was Cloudhead Games’ The Gallery Episode 2: Heart of the Emberstone that took home the main prize in the Entertainment category, followed by Carbon Studios’ The Wizards. Overview won first place in Education with Bartender VR Simulator running up. The Kremer Collection headlined the Arts & Culture category with Galactic Gallery coming second. Over in the Enterprise category 3D creation app Gravity Sketch VR was first with Primitive coming second. Finally, Regenesis Arcade Deluxe took home the grand prize in the Arcade category followed by Battlesky VR.

An entirely different set of winners were recognized over in China, though. Awards were split into two groups: one set for Vive and another for the new Vive Wave platform that runs on its Focus standalone headset. For Vive, handsome VR shooter, Reboant, was the Best Game (western release date still TBA), A.D. 2047 was the Best Immersive Experience, and SpaceCode won Best Industry Application. Spark of Light, YoukuVR and Vive Auto won in those respective categories on Focus.

Last week was a big one for HTC, announcing the release date and price of its Vive Pro headset and a western release of the Focus.

HTC Announces 2nd Annual Viveport Developer Award Nominees

HTC Announces 2nd Annual Viveport Developer Award Nominees

I’m not a VR developer but I’d imagine if I were one of the most exciting things to see, after huge sales and enjoyment from my hard work, would be recognition. There are several small-scale award shows for the VR industry right now, as well as the new VR category in the annual Game Awards show, but we’re still waiting on interactive entertainment’s breakout prestige moment.

HTC isn’t aiming for their Viveport Developer Awards to fill that hole, but they still don’t want people to forget that Viveport is a thing. So here we are.

For those unaware Viveport is basically HTC’s own direct-to-consumer digital marketplace and VR portal for those who don’t want to or can’t use Steam. It’s suffered from a lot of issues over time, but is poised to get some neat updates this year. There’s a lot of the same content on it that you can find on Steam, but it’s got a decidedly scaled-back focus on gaming and aims to instead highlight more educational and experiential pieces of software instead. The award categories reflect that focus.

According to a blog post from HTC’s Thomas Gratz, this year’s Viveport Developer Awards are split into five categories with two nominees each, adding up to a total of 10 nominees as follows:

Entertainment

The Gallery – Episode 2: Heart of the Emberstone

The Wizards

Education

Bartender VR Simulator

OVERVIEW

Arts & Culture

Galactic Gallery

The Kremer Collection VR Museum

Enterprise

Gravity Sketch VR

Primitive

Arcade

BattleSky VR

REGENESIS Arcade DELUXE

Winners will be announced on March 19th at a special GDC event. Until then, let us know your picks for winners (or forgotten nominees) down in the comments below!

It’s been a busy year for HTC and HTC Vive, with the company launching its first standalone headset, the Vive Focus in China. While a western release date has yet to be confirmed, 2018 is shaping up to be the year of standalone head-mounted displays (HMDs), with Oculus Go and Lenovo Mirage Solo due out, and the Pico Goblin already available. In China the Vive Focus will have to compete with a new version of the Pico Neo which uses the HTC’s Vive Wave platform, and  Xiaomi/Oculus collaboration Mi VR Standalone.

HTC Announces 2018 Viveport Developer Awards Nominees, $50K First Prize up for Grabs

HTC has established 5 categories for this year’s VDAs including entertainment, education, arts & culture, enterprise and arcade. A total of 10 nominees came out of the initial evaluations, a review process held by a panel of HTC employees that looked at the games’ overall virtual reality experience and engagement metrics  such as total downloads, total user sessions and overall time played.

Almost any type of app can be entered, so long as it’s already live on Viveport or submitted before 9th February. The five categories being considered are: Entertainment, Education, Arts & Culture, Enterprise and Arcade. So the experience can be something that teaches new skills, can be used for location-based entertainment or contributes to the knowledge and enjoyment of cultural heritage.

There are some significant prizes on offer with the first prize winner taking home $50,000 USD. They’ll also be featured in a studio profile video produced by HTC Vive, get priority access to new developer hardware and of course, a shiny trophy. For those that don’t snag first place, coming in second will still get them $20,000 to spend.

Entering is fairly easy. All you need to do is submit your title for publication on Viveport via the Developer Console. As mentioned, the app doesn’t need to be live just submitted for publishing by the closing date, 9th February. Don’t forget to look at the VDAs FAQ page for further details on submitting an app and eligibility.
