Virtual Safari Virry VR: Feel the Wild to Receive Major Update for PlayStation VR

At the beginning of the year Fountain Digital Labs launched interactive virtual safari Virry VR: Feel the Wild for PlayStation VR, enabling viewers to get up close to wild animals like rhinos, lions, zebras and elephants. Today the London-based technology company has announced the first major update, adding a bunch of highly requested features to the experience, set to arrive this Friday, 10th November.

In the update Fountain Digital Labs has now added a ‘Mood-o-Meter’ which asks users about their mood – whether they’re happy, sad, stressed, tired, etc. then later on they’ll be asked again. This allows users to monitor their mood while spending time relaxing on the magnificent savannah in Kenya, giving the ability to see how the experiences with the animals or just meditating by a waterfall can have a positive impact on their well being.

Other additions include the ability to switch the voice-over and conservation questions on or off entirely at any time; a new animal themed virtual DualShock 4 controller; all new music written by award-winning new age composer Japetu has been added to the relaxation experience and there’s now Spotify support with Virry detecting when Spotify is being used, automatically muting the default music in the relaxation experience.

“In years gone by we envisioned an ‘electronic safari’ where people  could encounter nature from afar so that wild animals could be left  in peace. I’m happy to say that day has come. Well done, Virry. I am dazzled by the experience.of the natural world,” said Jillian Miller, Founder of The Gorilla Organization in a statement.

As Virry VR: Feel the Wild has been created in collaboration with Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, for those viewers wishing to help with the conservation they can subscribe to the three live HD-cameras installed at the conservancy – there’s a 15 minute free trial period –  which cost $2.50 USD per month or $3.50 per month to donate $1.00 to Lewa.

Winner of the Webby People’s Voice Award 2017 in ‘VR: Gaming, Interactive, or Real-time’ and nominee for the upcoming 2017 BAFTA Awards in ‘Interactive’, Virry VR: Feel the Wild is available for $7.99 GBP.  While this is the first big update for Virry VR: Feel the Wild, the studio has confirmed it’s another big announcement to make in December.

When that happens, VRFocus will let you know.

Virry VR: Feel the Wild Receives BAFTA Nomination

Launched earlier this year, Virry VR: Feel the Wild is a virtual reality (VR) experience for PlayStation VR which takes players to the African savannah, allowing them to play with wild animals in their natural habitats. Already a winner of the Webby People’s Voice Award 2017 in ‘VR: Gaming, Interactive, or Real-time’, Virry VR: Feel the Wild has now been nominated in the Interactive category of the prestigious British Academy Children’s Awards for 2017.

Filmed on location in 4K VR, Virry VR: Feel the Wild includes live cameras from the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, which the team at Fountain Digital Labs say ‘is something we’re especially proud of’. This technology offers people a chance to see the animals they’ve just interacted with out roaming in the conservancy, and they can also help support them by donating $1 per month with their subscription.

“It’s a tremendous honour just to be nominated for a BAFTA and we’re thrilled that the hard work and dedication of our team is being recognised. Their passion for raising awareness of animal conservation among children and really, people of all ages, shows in the work that’s been done on Virry VR: Feel the Wild,” stated Svetlana Dragayeva, Fountain Digital Labs CEO, in an official statement. “With more and more animal species going extinct every year it’s important now more than ever to make people aware of their plight and to reconnect with nature in a safe and educational way directly from their living rooms. Children especially are crucial as they’re tomorrow’s leaders and policymakers, so making that connection and gaining an understanding of our place in the world and how to share it with wildlife can help to ensure a brighter future for all of us.”

The British Academy Children’s Awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, 26th November 2017. The complete list of nominations can be found on the official BAFTA website. Virry VR: Feel the Wild is available now to download the PlayStation Store, exclusively for PlayStation VR, priced at $9.99 (USD). The subscription service offers live cameras, which have a 15 minute free trial period, costing $2.50 (USD) per month or $3.50 (USD) per month to include a donation of $1.00 (USD) to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.

Virry VR Is PSVR’s First Paid-For 360 Video

Virry VR Is PSVR’s First Paid-For 360 Video

Sony’s PlayStation VR (PSVR) has embraced 360 video with surprising readiness since launch last October with a suite of free apps and, more recently, support for YouTube 360 content. This month, though, the platform gets its first premium 360 app.

That app is Virry VR, a nature documentary set in the Kenyan Savannas that gives viewers several close encounters with African wildlife. Filmed in Lewa Downs, a UNESCO heritage site in Northern Kenya, the video offers the chance to meet elephants, rhinos, Grevy’s zebras and leopards among others. Footage was shot over the course of four weeks.

There’s even an interactive element to the experience that gamifies it somewhat;. viewers can shake the PS4’s controller to tempt a lion to come and eat meat, for example.

On top of that, there’s an extra live streaming mode that provides 24/7 access to the Lewa Conservancy, and footage of peaceful landscapes that don’t include any animals, designed to help you relax. Future updates will also add new encounters with animals like giraffe, cheetahs, baboons, and another chance to get up close with some elephants.

Virry VR costs £7.99 in the UK, though it doesn’t appear to be available in the US just yet. Given that show many studios offer plenty of 360 content for free in this day and age it’s going to be interesting to see how this app performs. Hopefully a focus on education and using VR to promote issues such as endangered animals helps this succeed.

Headout on safari to the Kenyan Savannas with Virry VR for PlayStation VR

While Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE’s) PlayStation VR might be known for videogames like Resident Evil 7 biohazard or Double Fine’s Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, there’s more to explore on the headset. This week has seen the launch of Virry VR, taking viewers on safari in Kenya.

Heading to the wild plains of Africa isn’t necessarily the easiest thing to do or the cheapest, so experiences like Virry VR enable a lot more people get up close to these amazing animals.

Virry VR - Rhino

Filmed on location in 4K, there’s three ways to enjoy Virry VR. You’ve got the live-action interactive experience, to tempt a lion with meat, feed an elephant, stalk a zebra, or share a mud bath with a rhino. Or for something a little more tranquil there’s the immersive relaxation experience, this will transport you down an African river to enjoy the majestic landscape.  Lastly you got the live-streaming section, with HD cameras installed at UNESCO heritage site, Lewa Conservancy in Kenya to capture the animals as they live and play, day or night.

Virry VR isn’t just about seeing these wild animals, it aims to teach viewers about the conservation efforts being used to protect them. Virry CEO Svetlana Dragayeva explains on the PlayStation.Blog, it helps people: “better understand nature, conservation, and the world around them.”

Dragayeva then goes on to detail some of the challenges the team faced: “For the lions. the team had planned to set up a camera and drop meat remotely. For safety reasons, we could not leave the vehicle. However, it wasn’t as simple as we thought; we ended up just throwing the meat out of the truck and making a quick exit.”

Virry VR is available now on PlayStation Store for £7.99 GBP. Checkout the trailer below, and for the latest PlayStation VR releases, keep reading VRFocus.
