Vacation Simulator (2019), Owlchemy Labs’ laid back sequel to the madcap VR hit Job Simulator (2016), is getting its first big DLC drop today on SteamVR headsets and Oculus Quest.

Update (September 10th, 2020): Vacation Simulator: Back to Job is now live on SteamVR headsets and Oculus Quest, a free update that brings a load of new gig-style jobs to the game’s holiday hotspots. Owlchemy Labs says the update will arrive on PSVR in October.

The original article follows below:

Original Article (June 19th, 2020): Called ‘Back to JOB’, the free DLC update is slated to satire the gig economy where it seems like you’ll take on all manner of entitled customer.

Everyone (or every-bot) on Vacation Island has decided to join in the fun and quit their steady jobs in favor of fun in the virtual sun, leaving you to pick up the slack.

This is how Owlchemy describes it:

As a gig associate, players will man the Vacation Simulator poolside Cantina with their trusty partner GigBot at their side to assist them through their journey. In this new position players will meet an exciting cast of Bots, all who expect 5-star service. Get ready to cook, entertain, advise, and do whatever it takes for Bots to experience [MAXIMUM RELAXATION].

Vacation Simulator ‘Back To Job’ Update Coming This Fall

Owlchemy Labs is planning a free downloadable content update for Vacation Simulator later this year that expands the game by bringing forward some familiar experiences from Job Simulator.

Google-owned Owlchemy teased the update in its UploadVR Showcase segment.

Check out the trailer here:

Job Simulator and its sequel Vacation Simulator are among the more popular and widely known VR titles in existence. While both games are similar in tone and general mechanics, Vacation Simulator features a range of widely varying activities divided into a number of zones you can visit centered at  three vacation-themed environments — beach, mountain, and forest. The original Job Simulator featured four jobs including office worker, auto mechanic, chef, and convenience store clerk with a number of activities and challenges faced within each job.

So with the Back To Job downloadable content update Owlchemy is teasing that the gig economy made its way to the world of Vacation Simulator and “all bots have gone on vacation and no one is left to job, so it’s time for the human to enter the on-demand workforce to make the perfect vacation for bots. Time to job, again.”

“It’s kinda bringing two worlds together,” explains Owlchemy’s Devin Reimer. Taking “some of the cool things from both and kinda mash them together.”

Back To Job will come to all platforms with Vacation Simulator, so that means PSVR, Quest and PC VR systems will all get the update. They’re still working on the update so it’s unclear how much added content it will bring and the exact timeline for launch on each system. We’ll bring you updates about the new DLC as soon as we have them.

Check out every trailer, article, announcement, interview, and more from the UploadVR Showcase right here.

Job Simulator Has Now Sold Over 1 Million Units

Google-owned VR development studio Owlchemy Labs announced today that it had reached a massive sales milestone for its breakout hit, Job Simulator [original Vive review from 2016], which has now surpassed one million units sold.

Job Simulator originally launched for HTC Vive back in the first half of 2016, nearly four years ago, and is a great example of a game that’s easy to pick up and endlessly fun to play repeatedly. It has universal appeal with a sense of humor for all ages and requires very little in the way of tutorialization. In a lot of ways, it was VR’s truly first big hit back before headsets had even officially launched.

Since release it has also made its way to the Oculus Rift when Touch controllers released, the PSVR, and the Oculus Quest putting it on every major VR platform. Owlchemy Labs is also the developer of Rick and Morty: Virtual-Rickality and Vacation Simulator, two follow-ups that build upon the foundation laid in Job Simulator.

This is a massive sales milestone to reach. When compared to traditional non-VR video games, one million units is still seen as a huge success for non-AAA products, especially in the indie space. Few VR games have reached this point. Beat Saber revealed the number back in March of 2019 after its viral success and Sean Murray from Hello Games estimated that at least one million of his players had VR headsets already before No Man’s Sky got its VR update — counting the new copies that were sold it could likely be over that figure as well. Estimates also put around one million have played Resident Evil 7 in VR on PSVR, but it has sold far more copies overall as part of a massive Capcom AAA franchise that’s also playable outside of VR.

“We first developed Job Simulator as something that could only exist in VR. It was built for hardware that wasn’t yet available to consumers and was a very risky product.” says Owlchemy Labs CEOwl Devin Reimer in the company blog post. “Job Simulator going platinum shows that the consumer VR market is capable of generating huge hits. We’re delighted that Job Simulator has found a diverse audience that enjoys our game.“

Regardless of how you look at it, this is a big milestone. As VR continues to grow and reach mainstream adoption, expect to see more breakout success stories like this.

The Best PlayStation VR Games of 2019

So it’s the end of the year and what a 12 months it has been for virtual reality (VR) fans. With hardware makers pushing out more and more headsets Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has taken a far more relaxed approach by letting PlayStation VR continue to do its thing. The headset has had some excellent videogames appear and here is VRFocus’ pick of the best.

PlayStation VR Group shot

First and foremost this is a list of the best PlayStation VR videogames which launched in 2019. Which means there are several titles which appear on other ‘Best of lists’ that won’t appear here. Beat Saber is a prime example. While the highly popular rhythm-action experience left Early Access in May, that was only for PC (including an Oculus Quest edition). The PlayStation VR version launched in November 2018, hence its omission.

The Best PlayStation VR Games of 2019:

Blood & Truth

Hailing from Sony London Studio, Blood & Truth was the biggest PlayStation VR exclusive of the year by a long shot. Mixing intense action gameplay with a tightly interwoven storyline and cinematic cutscenes, the title showcased what could be achieved with PlayStation VR. VRFocus’ review gave it a full five stars, saying: “From start to finish Blood & Truth is one hell of a ride, a finely choreographed John Woo movie that’s all about sheer entertainment.”

Blood and TruthGhost Giant

Zoink Games’ Ghost Giant, on the other hand, is a very different beast; loveable and kind-hearted. A puzzle adventure where you play the titular Ghost Giant, an invisible friend to a lonely boy named Louis. Placed in the centre of a living cartoon world, you can interact with a lot of the world, helping not only Louis but the other town residents as well.

Perfect for gamers of all ages, Ghost Giant is a relaxed experience full of child-like wonder, being able to open houses and peer inside to see the richly detailed worlds. Great for when you don’t anything too hectic.

Ghost GiantNo Man’s Sky: Beyond

A summer update adding VR support rather than a dedicated VR videogame, even so, No Man’s Sky: Beyond was a major addition from Hello Games. With a massive procedurally generated universe to explore, new planets to discover, unusual creatures to find and other players to team up with, No Man’s Sky: Beyond offers quite possibly the most VR gameplay for your money. Plus the there’s the added benefit that the update was free for those who already own the original version.

Unless you really don’t like sci-fi and flying around in spaceships, then No Man’s Sky: Beyond is a solid addition to any VR library.

No Man's Sky: BeyondTetris Effect

How do you make one of the greatest, most iconic puzzle videogames even better? Give it to a team which includes Enhance Games and let them work their magic. Offering both VR and non-VR gameplay, the core Tetris mechanics remain untouched with some added extras for those well versed in the puzzle title.

The big change comes for the visual and sound design, with a feast for your eyes and ears. Needless to say, while the non-VR version does look and sound nice, the effects are far more pronounced and engaging. And when it comes to addictive gaming Tetris Effect doesn’t disappoint.

Tetris EffectTrover Saves the Universe

When the guy who helped co-create Rick & Morty decided to found his own videogame studio and then create a VR title, you know it’s going to be a little different from the rest. Trover Saves the Universe has that weird and zany humour Justin Roiland is known for, combined with a third-person adventure, where you control Trover, a little purple eye-hole monster trying to save the universe from a beaked lunatic named Glorkon, who just so happens to have kidnapped your dogs and put them in his eye sockets. Exactly…

Trover Saves the Universe

Angry Birds Movie 2 VR: Under Pressure

So what about proper multiplayer titles? While No Man’s Sky: Beyond does feature multiplayer, you can’t enjoy it when a few friends are around. That’s where Angry Birds Movie 2 VR: Under Pressure comes in handy. Exclusive to PlayStation VR, the title uses the social screen (TV) to allow up to four people to play locally, one in VR and three via the TV. The job is to collect treasure and not let the submarine you’re in suffer too much damage.

It’s a fast and frantic videogame where the VR player is the captain, with a different viewpoint and tasks to the other players. Thus encouraging everyone to have a go in VR. There is a single-player mode but Angry Birds Movie 2 VR: Under Pressure is all about the social gameplay.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 VR: Under PressureFive Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted

What’s a ‘Best of’ VR list without a horror title thrown in to scare you. Bringing the classic franchise into VR, Five Night’s at Freddy’s: Help Wanted combines all the original mini-game levels with a bunch of new ones. Not for the faint-hearted, Five Night’s at Freddy’s: Help Wanted is full of jump scares as you try to survive the night in the Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza security office, or repair vents in the depths of Circus Baby’s Entertainment and Rental.

When it comes to playing VR horror keeping the lights on won’t help, you need nerves of steel and Five Night’s at Freddy’s: Help Wanted certainly helps test that.

Five Nights at Freddys VR

A Fisherman’s Tale

Released all the way back in January by French studio InnerspaceVR, A Fisherman’s Tale is another puzzler for those who like something a little different. Clinching the VR Game of the Year at the VR Awards 2019, A Fisherman’s Tale is an experience about perspective and a little wooden sailor.

Delightfully charming in its design and gameplay, the single-player videogame centres around a lighthouse which you’re both inside and outside of. Confused? Don’t worry as it’s all about picking stuff up and learning how to manipulate your surroundings. Great for new and veteran VR players alike.

A Fisherman’s TaleVacation Simulator

A followup to the insanely popular Job Simulator, Vacation Simulator is like one massive toybox split across three different regions, a Beach, Forest and Mountain. Inside each one are loads of mini-games to complete as well as other fun stuff to play with. Challenges range from building sandcastles and making burgers to throwing snowballs and a little skiing.

With light-hearted humour throughout Vacation Simulator is another VR experience suited for all players, designed to showcase how immersive and unique VR technology can be in comparison to standard videogames.

Vacation Simulator

Concrete Genie

Another title which isn’t purely VR, Concrete Genie’s main campaign isn’t VR compatible. Instead, the title has two ‘VR modes’, the ‘VR Experience’ campaign which has a basic narrative and is required to complete before unlocking ‘Free Paint’, so you can let your creative ideas go wild.

With a visually stunning aesthetic, Concrete Genie offers an interesting mix of VR and non-VR gameplay depending on what you fancy at the time. Plus it’s a creative stop-gap until Dreams eventually arrives in 2020.

Best VR Of 2019 Nominee: Vacation Simulator Balanced Expanded Play With Wider Access

The road to UploadVR’s Best of 2019 awards starts here! We’re getting close to revealing our Overall VR Game/Experience of the Year after counting down to the reveal of our full list of categories and nominees soon. Today we’re looking at Vacation Simulator, the follow-up to Job Simulator that delivered an expanded playground balanced with wide access.

Plenty of VR games in 2019 tended toward playfulness, but you’re not going to find anything that invites as many players into such a comfortable and relaxing place as Owlchemy Labs’ Vacation Simulator.

The sequel from the Google-owned VR developer launched across PC VR, PS VR and Oculus Quest in 2019 — a feat in and of itself not achieved by many. But what makes Vacation Simulator so powerful is the way it offers so many different things for players to do — so many more than the original — while ensuring that players are almost never lost and practically never uncomfortable. Late in the year Owlchemy even added subtitle support for six languages and carefully integrated them into the game to even further expand the game’s appeal to more people.

As Jamie wrote when he reviewed it, “Vacation Simulator is limited to the things that work in VR and it’s not ready to cut corners. That’s why, for one of the first times since VR’s launch, I was able to sit back on a couch and laugh away at my partner playing for an hour without needing to explain how to carry out specific actions or convincing her to keep playing. VR should be this accessible and Owlchemy’s no-compromise approach is to be championed.”

That sentiment stands the test of the year, and should for some time longer.

You can get Vacation Simulator on Steam for PC VR headsets, on PSVR, or on Oculus Quest, and it is also available from the Oculus Store for Rift.

VRecap: Facebook VR Ads, Quest Hand-Tracking, And Golem + Radial-G Giveaway!

This was a really busy week in terms of new releases and big VR news. We’ve got a full slate in this episode of the VRecap from Facebook ads to Quest hand-tracking and even topped off the giveaway for three separate things this time around, including signed vinyls and physical VR game copies!

The Game Awards were last night, in which Beat Saber won top honors and we learned news of Facebook’s latest Oculus Rift S deal, in which it comes bundled with Asgard’s Wrath for a limited time. Besides that the Quest got hand-tracking this week, but you can’t do much with it yet. Facebook also announced that messaging and better party support is now rolled out to the Oculus platform, but as a result they’re monitoring user VR activity to better serve ads. No surprise there, frankly.

Rounding out the biggest stories of the week are two low points, in which social VR app High Fidelity laid off half its staff and is pulling the app soon, as well as the revelation that Magic Leap has only sold around 6,000 of its initial Creator’s Edition device. That’s admittedly pretty low.

It pains me to say that, honestly, I couldn’t fit all of the major topics into the video this week. So, if you really do care about VR, AR, and everything else happening in this industry, you’re just gonna have to visit the home page and scroll through the week’s stories. There’s no way around it, I’m afraid.

For this week’s giveaway we’ve got three separate things going on. First up is a physical copy of PSVR-exclusive adventure game, Golem. This giveaway ends next Thursday, 12/19/19 at 11:59PM PT. Enter here or down below:

GIVEAWAY: Win A Free Physical Copy Of Golem On PSVR!

Next up is the chance to win a signed, physical vinyl of the Golem soundtrack. We’ve got three of these to give out and five digital soundtrack keys, so three people will get both, two will get just the digital version. This giveaway also ends next Thursday, 12/19/19 at 11:59PM PT. Enter here or down below:

GIVEAWAY: Win A Signed Copy Of The Golem Soundtrack Vinyl Or Digital Version!

Finally, we’re also giving away two download keys for Radial-G: Proteus on Oculus Quest. The game releases next week and you have until Thursday, 12/19/19 at 11:59PM PT to enter. You can enter into that giveaway here or down below:

Thanks for watching and good luck on the giveaways!

Vacation Simulator Now Available On Oculus Quest

Time to take a holiday – after working hard in Job Simulator, you can now take some much-needed time off with Vacation Simulator on Oculus Quest.

Vacation Simulator is the latest VR title from Owlchemy Labs, which is essentially a sequel to the original Job Simulator game, expanding upon the mechanics and interactions in new vacation-themed locales. The game initially launched on PC VR and PSVR earlier this year, and is now available for the Oculus Quest.

A few days ago, Owlchemy Labs also put out a great Twitter thread showcasing some of the optimizations the development team made in order to get the game running on Quest. It’s a super interesting behind-the-scenes look, and also a great way to understand some of the differences you’ll be experiencing when playing the game on Quest compared to the PC VR version.  You can check out the full thread by clicking on the Tweet embedded below:

Job Simulator appears on our list of best Quest games, and there’s a fair chance that Vacation Simulator could make the cut when we next update the list. Jamie enjoyed Vacation Simulator on PC VR, writing in his review that “its philosophy of authenticity and intuition above all else is to be praised and preserved. There’s playful fun, immersive wonder and liberating agency all gathered under one roof, here.”

Vacation Simulator is available to purchase for the Quest on the Oculus Store now.

Will you be taking some time off work to dive into Vacation Simulator on Quest? Let us know in the comments.
