Review: UNBINARY

There have been some gorgeous virtual reality (VR) projects created by illustration and animation tool Quill by Smoothstep, from Oculus Story Studio short, Dear Angelica, to Baobab Studios’ latest, Namoo. Rather than a VR short, Brazilian studio Ludact has used the software to create UNBINARY, a puzzle experience that’s a visual treat, putting you inside a simulation design to test an AI. However, like most software, there are bugs making UNBINARY a less than flawless execution.

Unbinary

In the world of UNBINARY you find yourself in the company of Webby, an AI being put through their paces to see if its suitable enough to govern mankind – because we’re bored and can’t do it ourselves. Webby’s conscience has been collected from human behaviour that’s made her both smug and sarcastic making for a fun companion. You’re there to test if Webby is fit for the task by completing a series of challenges, rather than letting some homicidal AI loose on humanity – like that ever happens?

What you’ve got are a series of mini escape rooms, essentially trying to get from one side to the other. Whether that’s unlocking a series of doors, hacking systems or physically clambering up and across surfaces, UNBINARY keeps things generally interactive at all times even if they aren’t always the most polished. Buttons take a couple of presses as your finger invariably disappears through the first time or flipping a lever just doesn’t have that nice clunk you’d expect.

This might be down to the art style which is undoubtedly UNBINARY’s most striking factor. Like being inside a comic book, the bold use of colour and the fact that lines don’t always meet give the environments an organic character that you don’t often see in a VR videogame. This does have both plus and minus points. Yes, it looks great but only a few items are interactive and there were multiple times when it was possible to walk through environmental objects.

Unbinary

Probably the most annoying aspect of UNBINARY though was the movement. Locomotion was split down into continuous, blink and shift, the latter two designed for comfort, whilst teleportation was also available. Using continuous almost became unbearable due to the fact that every few seconds there was some invisible nugget or lip creating an immediate halt. Sometimes there was a pipe or grate on the ground whilst during other moments there was nothing.

Which was a shame as the rest of UNBINARY is an enjoyable puzzle experience. All the puzzles revolve around three robot masks, a green one that allows you to interact with similar robots giving them a cheeky wave; a yellow mask unlocks physical abilities so you can pick up boxes or climb ladders, whilst the purple mask enables hacking. Nothing is too overly complicated you just need to be aware of your surroundings. Additionally, to flick between your masks you’ve got a bracelet on your left wrist and a laser gun on your right to shoot hidden targets that unlock doors. And no before you ask, there’s no left or right-handed switching of those bracelets.

What gives UNBINARY its lasting character is Webby herself. She’s got just the right amount of sarcastic wit to be humorous without being annoying, and in some weird way sounds like an ‘80s school teacher telling you off.

UNBINARY delivers a wonderfully paced puzzle experience that’s vivid and alive, even if it’s meant to be a digital simulation. Those pretty visuals aside, it’s such a shame that so many other factors hamper the overall enjoyment. Those random walking issues, janky teleportation and random bugs like preferences being in Portuguese when the language is set to English. For a game that lasts around 3-4 hours depending on where you get stuck, it needs more polish, so that completion feels truly fulfilling. There were moments where it was delightfully satisfying to be in UNBINARY as if trapped in an abstract painting you don’t mind being locked inside. By the end though it was nice to get out.

Hand-Painted VR Adventure Unbinary Hits Quest This Week

You’ll be able to play the Quest version of hand-painted VR adventure, Unbinary, later this week.

The new game from Ludact has just been listed for a February 17 release on the platform. It’s already available on Steam via early access, so expect the full version to launch there around the same time too. Check out the most recent trailer for the game below.

In the game, you’re sent to audit an AI named Webby set to be placed in charge of Earth. You’ll be solving puzzles as you journey through Webby’s systems, fixing potential errors and build up Webby’s capabilities.

We were drawn to the game thanks to its striking art style, which was created inside VR. It remains to be seen if Unbinary will deliver a compelling story and/or gameplay to back up its aesthetic, though.

Hand-Painted Puzzle Adventure UNBINARY Approved for Meta Quest

Almost a year ago Brazilian indie game studio Ludact released its virtual reality (VR) title UNBINARY via Steam Early Access, a colourful adventure that was developed using Quill by Smoothstep. Now, the studio has released several new updates whilst confirming that an official launch including support for Meta Quest isn’t far away.

Unbinary

The big news is that UNBINARY is finally coming to the Meta Quest platform, as the studio has received official Oculus Store approval. The release will coincide with the title leaving Early Access.

“During Early Access on Steam we received an invite to enter on the process for Quest Store, for us it was amazing!”, said Egon Ribeiro of Ludact in a statement. “We are excited to show all the environments and puzzles of UNBINARY. We put together the feedback we received on Early Access until now, and we are working hard in the QA process, ready for a full-launch in Early 2022.”

As for the recent update updating and adding new features, the team has dropped in a brand new level whilst improving the visual assets, animations, and puzzle challenges of the current levels. Accessibility has also been enhanced with three different forms of movement (Continuous, Blink and Shift) now available to players. UNBINARY puts you in the beautifully drawn world of Webby, a super A.I. who has been selected to rule the world. However, before she starts to reign over mankind you need to test her integrity. This involves completing various puzzles across 22 levels, unlocking three different masks, which have unique abilities to help you overcome Webby’s simulations and challenges.

The official launch of UNBINARY will be simultaneous across Meta Quest, Rift, Steam and Viveport stores in spring 2022, retailing for $14.99 USD. Check out the new story trailer below and for continued updates on the latest VR videogames, keep reading gmw3.com.

Gorgeous Hand-Painted Puzzle Game Unbinary Launches This Week

Strikingly gorgeous VR puzzle game, Unbinary, is launching on PC VR this week.

Ludact’s hand-painted adventure will arriving on SteamVR on March 26th with native support for the Oculus Rift. Unbinary’s environments and character models were all made by hand inside of Oculus Quill. We think you’ll agree the results are pretty stunning. See for yourself in the trailer below.

The game is set in what Ludact calls a moment in “future human history” in which an advanced AI named Webby is about to become the ruler of the world. Before she’s given power, though, the player needs to audit her. That involves taking part in Webby’s simulations to test out her capabilities.

Gameplay sees players putting on different marks that give them different abilities. An unusual premise for sure, but Ludact’s Egon Ribeiro says it’s one with intent.

“The biases of society are everywhere. We tried to imagine how would it be a world as seen by a super AI modeled after all these biased datasets. What could happen there? We didn’t spare acid humor and a comic book art style, hand-drawn inside VR, to immerse players in this dystopic story. We want people to get first-person into Webby’s visions of the world, embarking into an adventure spiced with full-body gameplay, Quill-made art style, and revelations that will tease your thoughts,” the developer said in a prepared statement.

Unbinary is launching with a planned brief-stint in Early Access. This launch will have the game’s first two stages, but there are seven planned in total. Early Access is aiming to last between one to two months, during which time the game will be cheaper than the full launch.
