Ubisoft Adds VR Support To Its In-House Snowdrop Engine

Assassin’s Creed publisher Ubisoft, which is working on several upcoming VR games, recently revealed that it has added VR support to its in-house development engine, Snowdrop.

Original created by Massive Entertainment and used in the Ubisoft-published Tom Clancy’s The Division, Snowdrop also featured in Ubisoft titles like Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle and will be used in Massive’s upcoming Star Wars game. But, in a recently-published blog on the engine’s website, another Ubisoft studio, Blue Byte, revealed it had been working to add a “VR component” to the engine.

Ubisoft Snowdrop VR Support Added

Blue Byte is actually a string of studios located throughout Germany, and were most recently responsible for Ubisoft’s location-based VR escape room games like Prince of Persia: The Dagger of Time and the Assassin’s Creed-themed Beyond Medusa’s Gate. These titles, however, were developed with an external engine. Recently, Blue Byte has been working on adding VR support into Snowdrop not just so that it can develop new VR titles with an engine it has more control over, but also so that other partners can use it too.

“One of our main ambitions is to make our own VR titles, but we are also very open to collaboration on other projects,” Alexander Frey, Lead Programmer at Blue Byte Düsseldorf, said in the blog post. “We started with this project in November 2019, and soon saw its potential. We increased the number of people working on it, in part because we realized that the combination of Snowdrop and VR would something useful for a lot of projects across Ubisoft.”

Beyond Blue Byte, Ubisoft has two VR projects in the works. At Facebook Connect in late 2020 the company announced that it was working on new Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell VR games. The post doesn’t confirm that these new projects, which will be exclusive to Oculus devices, are being developed through Snowdrop, though.

That said, it certainly sounds as if the VR component of the engine has been developed with standalone headsets like the Oculus Quest in-mind. “Because of the nature of VR, you have to make rendering simpler,” Frey said. “The graphics are usually not as high fidelity as in normal-screen AAA games. So that’s something we’ve had to change. For Snowdrop VR we’ve simplified the graphics pipeline to make it more effective.”

The blog also mentions that Blue Byte wants to see Snowdrop used in “bigger projects”, so it’s very possible that Ubisoft’s latest VR efforts are using the engine. “Smaller projects and masters theses have been done with our component, but we’re now able to use it for much more,” Frey concluded, “so we’re looking forward to taking it to new places.”

Prince of Persia: The Dagger of Time is the Latest LBE Attraction From Ubisoft

In September of last year, VRFocus reported on Ubisoft building a team specifically for virtual reality (VR) content development, with a lot of the positions at its Dusseldorf office – formerly Ubisoft Blue Byte. The team specialised in location-based entertainment (LBE) having already created Assassin’s Creed Origins: Escape the Lost Pyramid and Beyond Medusa’s Gate. Now its latest project has been unveiled, taking gamers on another immersive journey inside a popular videogame IP with  Prince of Persia: The Dagger of Time.

Prince of PersiaBased on The Sands of Time trilogy, the narrative involves players being summoned to the Fortress of Time by Kaileena (the Empress of Time) to stop an evil Magi. Kaileena restores and gives the Dagger of Time to the players so they can reach the Hourglass Chamber and use it to stop the Magi, preventing an army of Sand Monsters from being unleashed.

The experience is designed for between 2 – 4 players, cooperating with teammates to complete the shared goal. Prince of Persia: The Dagger of Time will require players to solve puzzles by using the titular artefact’s powers to stop, rewind, or fast-forward time as well as utilising the benefits of roomscale VR, climbing walls and exploring the digital space.

“Our VR escape rooms are meant to be larger-than-life adventures; something you can’t do in the real world, something you can totally immerse yourself into once you put on the VR headset. Prince of Persia ticked all the boxes,” said Cyril Voiron, executive producer for Ubisoft Escape Games in a blog post. “The Sands of Time series seemed to be the perfect fit, because it not only offers a fantasy setting, but the original games also come with many elements that fit perfectly into VR, such as puzzles and, of course, using powers such as time control.”

Detailing a little more about how the gameplay works, Voiron went on to say: “Only the player who holds the Dagger of Time in their hands can control time, and they can stop, rewind, or move time forward. When they do so, we added some visual and audio cues so the other players also realize that time is being manipulated. It is quite impressive the first time that you can freeze the world around you!”

Prince of Persia: The Dagger of Time will be made available to VR arcades worldwide who use the Ubisoft Escape Games platform this Spring. For further updates on Ubisoft’s latest LBE VR offerings, keep reading VRFocus.

Ubisoft Building 50 Person Team for Unannounced VR Project

It was once the case that large videogame developers had no interest in virtual reality (VR) content creation due to the fact the technology was so niche. Slowly but surely several studios have come to embrace VR such as Bethesda, Gearbox Studios, and Ubisoft. Actually, Ubisoft was one of the earliest creating titles like Werewolves Within, Eagle Flight, Star Trek: Bridge Crew and most recently Space Junkies. Today, VRFocus has learnt Ubisoft is now hiring for a specialist VR team.

Space Junkies

The company is looking to build a 50 person strong team to work on an unannounced VR project, a AAA title which will use one of Ubisoft’s biggest IP’s. There are plenty to choose from when it comes to well-known Ubisoft brands including  Assassins Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six, Tom Clancy the list goes on.

“Not all our positions are on our website yet but we are building a 50 people team right now for this new project, focusing right now on the core team but more positions will follow!” a Ubisoft spokesperson told VRFocus.

Some of these positions can already be found on Ubisoft’s career website, all based in Dusseldorf, Germany:

Star Trek: Dark Remnant

It looks as though the team will be part of Ubisoft Blue Byte, a Dusseldorf-based studio which has worked on several brands including Anno and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege. Ubisoft Blue Byte is also behind two location-based entertainment (LBE) for VR arcades Assassin’s Creed Origins: Escape the Lost Pyramid and Beyond Medusa’s Gate. The unannounced VR project will be separate, however: “And to be clear, this new team that we are building is a different team than the Escape Room VR team!” said the spokesperson.

This project could very well be related to the July rumour that Facebook had reportedly signed a deal with Ubisoft for Assassin’s Creed and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell exclusives. Nothing has been confirmed to date but as mentioned they are two of the biggest IP’s the videogame company has, warranting a decent team. As further details come to light regarding Ubisoft’s plans, VRFocus will let you know.

Ubisoft’s Escape Room Title Beyond Medusa’s Gate Arrives at VR Arcades Worldwide

Ubisoft continues its growing involvement in virtual reality (VR) today, announcing the launch of another title for location-based entertainment (LBE) venues. Ubisoft Blue Byte has just released escape room experience Beyond Medusa’s Gate for VR arcades in the US and Europe.

Beyond Medusa's Gate

Designed as a multiplayer cooperative VR experience, Beyond Medusa’s Gate uses Assassin’s Creed’s Odyessy’s recreation of Ancient Greece as it’s the backdrop, in a similar vein to Ubisoft Blue Byte’s previous VR experience  Assassin’s Creed Origins: Escape the Lost Pyramid which was based in Ancient Egypt.

The minimum number of players is two, with up to four being able to create a team. They then have 60 minutes to find a way out of a vast Aegean coastal cave where the legendary ship of the Argonauts is anchored. Being a team-based experience, player’s do have to work together (so no falling out halfway through!) to solve complex puzzles and devious riddles to be victorious in this room scale challenge.

To make the videogame a bit more customisable and unique to each player, everyone has the option to choose from six avatars which will represent them in-game. Additionally, before the adventure starts each avatar can be further modified with ancient Greek accessories.

Beyond Medusa's Gate

Beyond Medusa’s Gate is available exclusively at over 100 VR arcades via the Ubisoft Escape Games platform. European locations include the UK, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Spain and Sweden, while there are numerous locations across the US and Canada. Check this interactive map to find a location near you.

Alongside Ubisoft’s dedicated LBE VR experiences its most recent VR release was another multiplay called Space Junkies. Available in VR arcades as well as home headsets like Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR, the first-person shooter (FPS) arrived at the end of March after numerous public beta tests. The studio has already outlined future plans for the videogame including PlayStation Move support, additional modes, maps and characters, all of which could be coming during the course of 2019.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Ubisoft’s latest VR LBE plans (as well as Space Junkies), reporting back with the latest updates.

Beyond Medusa’s Gate is Ubisoft’s Second Location-Based VR Experience, Arriving May 2019

Unlike many big videogame studios, Ubisoft has clearly embraced virtual reality (VR) with a variety of immersive titles both for home use as well as location-based entertainment (LBE). Having previously created Assassin’s Creed Origins: Escape the Lost Pyramid Ubisoft Blue Byte has announced its latest LBE experience, Beyond Medusa’s Gate.

Beyond Medusa’s Gate is the second location-based VR escape room experience from the studio based in the Assassin’s Creed universe, set in the re-creation of Ancient Greece from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

A cooperative videogame design for between two to four players, they’re challenged to find a way out of a vast Aegean coastal cave where the legendary ship of the Argonauts is anchored within 60 minutes. Each game starts by players choosing their own character which can then be customised using Ancient Greek accessories. Players then have to work together to solve various brain-teasing puzzles and riddles.

“Ubisoft’s Escape Games are tapping into two popular and growing entertainment trends—combining escape rooms and location-based VR in highly immersive, one-of-a-kind experiences,” said Cyril Voiron, Executive Producer for Ubisoft’s Escape Games in a statement. “Beyond Medusa’s Gate continues the legacy of our game design and storytelling expertise, pushing the Escape Room experience category with memorable state-of-the-art VR experiences that go beyond what is physically possible.”

“The level of immersion in Beyond Medusa’s Gate is astonishing and will make players feel like they are truly in the game,” said Benedikt Grindel, Managing Director at Ubisoft Blue Byte. “Our goal with Ubisoft’s Escape Games is to revolutionize the Location Based Entertainment industry and bring virtual reality to a mainstream audience.”

Beyond Medusa’s Gate will be coming to over 100 locations across the US and Europe on 7th May. As further details are released, VRFocus will keep you updated.
