Wave to Close its VR Concert App

Wave

The past year has seen many industries pivot into the digital realm and seek new ways to connect. That includes the music industry with artists reaching fans across multiple platforms. Yet, one of the early pioneers of virtual performances Wave – formerly TheWaveVR – has announced that its virtual reality (VR) app is to shutter.

Wave launched its music platform in 2016, providing users with both live and recorded immersive performances. Like many it expected to see a surge in VR adoption which never quite happened back then, so a couple of years later started to change its strategy and cater to the standard streaming market. In a recent tweet, Wave CEO and co-founder Adam Arrigo has now confirmed those VR aspirations are ending.

Noting that: “the VR industry didn’t develop as quickly as we’d hoped,” and because of this he says: “The hardest part of running a startup is choosing what to focus on, which has led us to the difficult decision to sunset TheWaveVR app on Steam and Oculus.”

Although he does also cite Google Poly as another factor: “Unfortunately we built the user tools on top of Google Poly, which is shutting down. As much as we’d love to, we aren’t able to spend the resources to build a new backend pipeline, since we are already spread so thin trying to accomplish our current set of non VR objectives.”

Wave

So, for now, that means the definitive end of Wave’s VR plans. The company may return to VR in the future, most likely when adoption has reached more mainstream appeal. “We promise to do everything we can to one day bring back this experience in an even more evolved form,” Arrigo said.

Wave secured $30 million USD in Series B funding during last summer as it pivoted towards a broader user base. Past artists who’ve performed on the platform include John Legend, The Weeknd, Imogen Heap, and Jean-Michel Jarre. For further updates, keep reading VRFocus.

Wave Deprecates VR App to Focus on Broader Distribution of Its Virtual Performances

Wave, the virtual venue & virtual event production company formerly known as TheWaveVR, has moved away from virtual reality over the last two years in favor of distributing its virtual performances to a broader audience through non-immersive media channels. The company today announced that it has “de-prioritized” its VR app, which will officially shut down at the end of March. Wave says the move will allow it to focus on bringing “more fans [to] experience our virtual events on popular streaming platforms.”

Founded in 2016, Wave has raised some $40 million in venture capital, according to Crunchbase, to chase its vision of virtual concerts as the future of music performances. The company has produced virtual events headlined by well known artists like John Legend and Lindsey Stirling. Performances are rendered in real-time, with artists donning mo-cap suits and face-tracking tech to bring their likeness into the virtual world as their avatars perform in fantastical virtual venues.

At the outset, the company’s platform was built to be immersive and interactive—even allowing users to host their own performances—with audiences joining the venue via virtual reality through the Wave Beta app which launched on Steam in 2017 and Oculus PC in 2018.

But with VR’s relatively slow adoption, the company realized it wasn’t reaching the scale of audience that it needed. Wave began focusing its efforts on broadcasting the virtual productions beyond virtual reality so that a wider audience could enjoy the show. Now the company says its fully focused on delivering virtual productions through traditional channels, like livestreams, and will be shutting down its VR app at the end of March.

The primary reason, the company maintains, is that part of its VR app relies on Google’s 3D model hosting platform, Poly (which itself is shutting down); Wave says it doesn’t have the resources to build a new solution into the app. The company contends that its best option is to shutter the app for now, and promises to do “everything we can to one day bring back [the VR experience] in an even more evolved form.”

Wave CEO & co-founder Adam Arrigo publicly shared the following note:

We founded Wave almost five years ago to connect humanity through immersive music experiences. That journey started in the VR space, with our community-driven VR app on Steam, and it’s been rewarding watching our community of creators use our tools to host their own VR concerts. We never foresaw the incredible things people would create, and often attending those shows felt like peering into the future of live music / visual art performance and being blown away by the result.

Two years ago we pivoted out of VR into gaming and live-streaming, as the VR industry didn’t develop as quickly as we’d hoped. Artists need audiences to thrive, and we realized VR just wasn’t there yet, and there was a bigger opportunity for artists outside headsets. Even though ti doesn’t fit our current business model, we’ve kept TheWaveVR app and servers running just because the community in there has made such inspiring stuff. Unfortunately we built the user tools on top of Google Poly, which is shutting down.

As much as we’d love to, we aren’t able to spend the resources to build a new backend pipeline, since we are already spread so thin trying to accomplish our current set of non VR objectives. We are still a relatively small startup. The hardest part of running a startup is choosing what to focus on, which has led us to the difficult decision to sunset TheWaveVR app on Steam and Oculus.

Even though this means the Wave VR shows will come to a pause, we think this is the best decision for the long term future of the Wave community, and we promise to do everything we can to one day bring back this experience in an even more evolved form. Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts for joining us for all those multi-hour VR raves and for helping us craft this vision of the future of music and art. We hope you’ll join us for this next chapter.

Social VR Music Platform ‘Wave’ Raises $30M In Series B Funding

Wave, a social VR music platform that hosts virtual concerts and live performances inside virtual reality, has raised $30 million of Series B funding. They’ve raised $40 million to date.

Wave’s funding is split up between a wide assortment of companies. According to VentureBeat:

“Maveron led the new round, with a big chunk of the funding provided by Griffin Gaming Partners. Additional investors in the round include NTT DoCoMo Ventures, Avex, Superfly Ventures, Convivialite Ventures, and Raised in Space. Entrepreneurs Scooter Braun, Alex Rodriguez, Superfly cofounder Rick Farman, and Twitch cofounder Kevin Lin also participated in the round.

Wave’s existing investors include RRE Ventures, Upfront Ventures, the Venture Reality Fund, GFR Fund, and GC Tracker Fund.”

Recently, Wave announced a series of virtual concerts under the “One Wave” name featuring acts like John Legend and will allow performers to create their own digital avatars similar to VRChat characters.

Another popular way to experience live music events in VR is through livestream footage in virtual stadiums, like Oculus Venues. Big artists such as Billie Eilish have performed in Oculus Venues with mixed results.

“You can put on a headset and listen to Coachella live, but no one wants to do that,” Phil Sanderson said, managing director at Griffin Gaming Partners, one of Wave’s latest investors . “The only way to do this is to capture the emotion of the crowd, which is effectively what Wave does by creating an interactive experience. It’s so much better — if you were watching Travis Scott in Fortnite, it would be so much better if you could see his facial expressions and interact with him in real time.”

For context, Sanderson was the first investor in Pandora and also invested in Song Pop and is an frequent attendee at music festivals.

Music Platform Wave Raises a Massive $30m in new Funding Round

Wave

Six months ago digital music events were seen as a quirky, niche part of the virtual reality (VR) industry which had potential. Now, that’s a different matter entirely as live in-person shows have all but stopped, requiring artists to find new online ways of connecting with fans. This has meant an increased interest in platforms like Wave (formerly called TheWaveVR), which has just announced the closure of a $30 million Series B funding round.

Wave

Led by Seattle VC firm Maveron in conjunction with Griffin Gaming Partners, the funding round also featured investors including NTT DOCOMO Ventures, Avex, Superfly Ventures, Convivialite Ventures, and Raised in Space. Existing investors include RRE Ventures, Upfront Ventures, The Venture Reality Fund, GFR Fund, and GC Tracker Fund. Plus there were entrepreneurs Scooter Braun, Alex Rodriguez, Superfly co-founder Rick Farman, and Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin. Hence the round was so successful.

Founded in 2016, this new round brings Wave’s total to $40 million. In that time Wave has collaborated with over 20 artists including Kill the Noise, TOKiMONSTA, Imogen Heap, REZZ, Jean-Michel Jarre and electronic violinist, Lindsey Stirling. Its virtual concerts are called ‘Waves’, each one is live with interactive and social features to give them a proper party vibe.

Waves are customised to an artist’s personal style rather than being set in a generic venue which can make for some visually impressive virtual concerts. With the new funding, the company plans to expand into other countries like Japan and China, whilst providing new in-stream experiences.

Wave Platforms

“We expect to see rapid advancement in the online capabilities of digital concerts from low budget streams to truly spectacular, culture defining events,” said Maveron Partner David Wu in a blog post. “Wave has the opportunity to become the gold standard by which all online live concert experiences are compared.”

Expect to see more from Wave as the platform continues to grow, available via Steam and Oculus store for free, supporting Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. As further announcements are made, VRFocus will let you know.

Watch A Live Imogen Heap Performance Tonight From Inside TheWaveVR

Yesterday, Oculus announced a special concert taking place today inside TheWaveVR featuring Grammy award-winning artist, Imogen Heap. It feels like a match-made in electronic music heaven.

Less than a year ago, TheWaveVR closed a $4 million seed funding round and are gearing up to continue changing music forever with groundbreaking projects like their VR album collaboration with TOKiMONSTA. Seeing the success of Electronauts and Beat Saber clearly shows that VR and music go hand-in-hand.

“From my first talks with TheWaveVR, which as it happened were in VR, I knew I wanted to get involved in this project,” says artist Imogen Heap in the blog post. “With my three-year-old daughter’s future in mind, it excites me how, through virtual reality, we are already able to connect in a more human way, even when time and place would have it otherwise. Having my fans experience a musical performance from within the welcoming walls of my family home brings a whole new dimension to connecting and communicating for me.”

The first showing of the event happened today at 11AM PT inside TheWaveVR, but you can tune in for round two tonight at 7PM PT inside TheWaveVR.

You can download TheWaveVR for free on Oculus Home and Steam to check out the experience tonight.

“From my first talks with TheWaveVR, that as it happened were in VR, I knew I wanted to get involved in this project. With my three year old daughter’s future in mind, it excites me how, through virtual reality, we are already able to connect in a more human way, even when time and place would have it otherwise,” said Imogen in a statement. “Having my fans experience a musical performance from within the welcoming walls of my family home, in addition to a song that Guy Sigsworth and I have not yet released, brings a whole new dimension to connecting and communicating for me. For those who are unable to be there in person during my world tour, it’s also a trio of songs and their arrangements that can be enjoyed in a completely unique way and hopefully, as emotionally engaging. The team has created something both beautiful and inspiring and I hope that this is just the beginning of what is to come from our adventures.”

To make the hologram of Heap TheWaveVR worked with volumetric capture company Depth Kit to record her likeness, creating a virtual version of Imogen’s home where visitors can experience visuals as environments which evolve to the sounds of the music.

Having my fans experience a musical performance from within the welcoming walls of my family home brings a whole new dimension to connecting and communicating for me.”

It’s uncertain if users will be able to check out the show after the two showings, so make sure to have TheWaveVR downloaded and ready.

The Glitch Mob & ‘TheWaveVR’ to Launch Interactive VR Version of Latest Album

TheWaveVR, the social VR music platform, and electronic music group The Glitch Mob are collaborating to launch a new interactive VR version of the band’s third and latest studio album, ‘See Without Eyes’.

The interactive VR album will take users on what TheWaveVR calls “a VR odyssey of shifting dreamscapes choreographed to a 20-minute custom mix of the album. As users fly through several environments, they can interact with each other as well as become part of the visuals.”

The experience, which will be free, launches Thursday, June 21st at 7:00 PM PT (your local time here).

The show will be available globally for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive users through TheWaveVR app, available on the Oculus Store and Steam, and will be broadcast live on TheWaveVR Facebook page. After the live version of the show is complete, users will also be able to experience a looped version of the VR album.

“TheWaveVR and Strangeloop Studios have masterfully crafted a new dimension to the album, and we’re beyond excited for people to take the ride. ‘See Without Eyes VR’ is an entirely new way to experience the music—as a full-body immersive journey,” said The Glitch Mob.

“This show expands upon what we’ve learned from doing several others, but goes much deeper into environmental storytelling and interactive design,” said Adam Arrigo, TheWaveVR CEO and co-founder. “Part film, part concert and part art installation, the show explores themes fundamental to immersive technology, such as the relationship between isolation and social interaction in the digital world. It’s far and away our most ambitious endeavor to date.”

TheWaveVR recently closed a $6 million Series A funding round and later collaborated with Warner Bros. on a Ready Player One (2018) themed experience that brought the film’s dance club scene to life in VR. The Austin and Los Angeles-based startup is also known for having collaborated with EDM artists TokiMonsta, Heavy Grinder, Ninja Tune artist Ash Koosha’s AKTUAL, and Strangeloop’s N-FOLD to name a few.
